e wakes up, as he has each night before. Abruptly, and with a single deep inhaling of air. It is two hours before dawn. He lies still for a moment, blinking rapidly as he looks up through the darkness, the back of his right hand resting on his damp forehead. Outside is a deep hush. He looks over at the glowing numbers on the clock, then out the window. The four o'clock sky is mild with stars, and above the ground floats a frail, softly rising mist. A car goes by with a sigh of tires and a small flare of headlights. He turns .over onto his left side and places his arm across the other side of the queen-size bed, feeling the mattress, firm and flat beneath the blanket. He allows his arm to rest there for several minutes, then rolls onto his back, swings his feet over and gets out of bed. He hears, he thinks as he 'stands there barefoot on the cold hardwood floor, the sound of breathing. Like his own, but not. He listens, his head cocked toward the open door. He counts silently to ten, then to twenty.

Moving slowly, he leaves the room and walks into the hallway. The ceiling is low, and when he reaches the door at the end of the cramped corridor, he stops, pauses, and opens it. He flips the light switch and squints for a few seconds, then looks around the room. His eyes settie on a small pink dresser with white drawer knobs. A porcelain merry-go-round with four horses sits on it. He thinks about winding it, starting the music and the motion, but he does not. cross the room below a window blackened by the starflecked darkness without is a single narrow bed. Stuffed nimals of various sizes lean against the pillow. He walks over and lifts up one of the animals, a floppy gray puppy, looks at it for a few seconds, then puts it back and picks up the largest of the menagerie, a green frog wearing a baseball cap. He stares at the frog a long time, then runs his fingers slowly down its back, smoothing the soft, napped fabric. When he has done this several times, he returns it to the bed. He notices a thin film of dust on his fingertips and he rubs his hands lightly together, removing it. He breathes deeply and continues his visual tour of the room. On the wall are framed photographs, the largest showing three people who sit on a bench in a place surround- . ed by trees. There is a pond-a small lake, actually-in the background. All three of the people are smiling and waving at the camera. Ayellow balloon floats several feet above the smallest of the three. As he stares at the photograph, he thinks that he remembers where it was taken, and when. But he is not certain, not really.

fter a moment, he sits down on the bed, on one corner. The mattress sags under his weight and the springs ake a low creaking sound.

He stares at the framed photograph, his eyes having at last adjusted to the light. He pushes his teeth into his lower lip, bends forward, interlocks his fingers between his knees and rubs the insides of his thumbs against each other, back and forth, back and . forth, looking up at the photograph, then away, then back again.

When, after a time, he glances over at the clock on the pale blue nightstand-what color blue was that? he thinks. Robin's egg?-it reads 5:06. He unlocks his fingers and raises his hands. They are pale, and he turns them before his eyes, inspecting them. When he pushes a fingernail into the fleshy tip of one forefinger, he feels nothing. Then he stands up, turns, and runs the palm of his hand flat across the corner of the bed several times, smoothing the pinkand-white spread until it is completely free of creases. He gives the bottom corner a final, gentle tug, brushes the hand against the leg of his pajamas and crosses to the door. He thinks about turning around, about giving the room one last look, but he does not. He turns off the lights, letting his finger linger briefly on the switch, then walks out and pulls the door . slowly behind him, releasing his grip on the knob when he hears the soft click of the bolt.

When he gets back into bed, he lies on his back, looking, once more, up into the darkness.

His breathing is fast and shallow, then, after a moment, slower and more regulated. He rolls onto his left side, reaches out and moves his hand in a slow circle over the flat, cool sheets. "Fine," he whispers, a tone of reassurance in his voice. "Everything is fine." •
