. DON'T LIKE THIS PLACE," said Jessie, looking up out of the passenger seat at the garish, skyscraping gas station pillars and a long row of covered white lamps shining down on parking slots. Beyond the complex a mass of dark pines loomed blackish-green against a ghostly winter sky. "We can work out something you like better for next time," appeased Galen. "You used to like it here, though, I remember. Because of the fried chicken.

Want to go in and get some?" "No.Idon't likethat chicken anymore."

Wanting to touch her fairy-soft blonde hair, he gently brought his arm to rest on the back of her seat. He hesitated to touch the hair out of fear she would say she didn't like that anymore, either. He extended his fingers just far enough to touch the outer strands.

He had kept the engine running because its hum was friendlier than the tense silence inherent in the moment and for the heat, which made Jessie remove her matching blue crocheted hat and scarf. Galen smiled, remember. ing the solemn way she had tried them on at Aunt Margie's front hall mirror. "What's so funny?"

She notices everything, he said to himself, smiling again. Aminute ago she had been staring steadfastly ahead, as though she were waiting for the approaching end of the world to reach .the car. "I'mnot laughing." "You're smiling."

Hemanaged some inspiration. "The guy over there by that pick-up truck did something funny. He opened his mouth in a big, rude yawn and his...his girlfriend put her hand over it." "How do you know she's his girlfriend?" Jessie countered, taking no interest in the couple. She had brought her sneakered feet up onto the seat and was toying with her laces. "Oh, just a guess. A pick-up truck and alL." "You and mommy had a truck. I've seen it in pictures of you and her at a lake. The pictures where you're laughing and holding up fish. Ick." "That was a Volkswagen bus. There was a time it seemed likeeverybody had one of those. You rode in it." .She turned her eyes on him, full and interested. "When?"

Galen reflected gratefully on the human inability to remember the first few years of one's lifeto any meaningful extent. So much had happened between himself and Penny. "When you were real little."

Jessie opened the glove compartment and extracted a chocolate bar from under a pile of maps, napkins and car registration. She closed the little door and turned to smile at him secretively, smugly.

Something inside him turned over and he smiled back. "What's that all about?" he asked. "Aunt Margie bought me it. I've been saving it for the trip home."

Suddenly a face appeared at the window, startling them. Then some feminine fingers tapped musically on the glass and the face smiled. "Mommy's here." "Oh, yes," Galen responded with the same enthusiasm he had heard himself muster during interviews for jobs he knew he would hate. He reached into the back for Jessie's suitcase and got out. Penny was hugging Jessie and lis: tening to the account of the stashed chocolate bar. "Hi,Pen."

They exchanged a polite kiss. "You were waiting," she replied in a kind tone. Ihope I'm not late."

Galen shrugged. "Someone has to get here first. We only just arrived. Listen, Pen, we have to find a better rendezvous place." "But this is exactly halfway!" "Nevertheless, it has fallen out of favor with Jess and Idon't much care for it. It's depressing. Isn't that so, old babe?" He reached out and put his hand on Jes-

Penny rolled her eyes. "One week with your Aunt Margie and she's talking like Chaucer," she disparaged, not altogether displeased with the mix of culture and eccentricity that marked Galen's family. "I'm cold," Jessie said.

Galen stood a little straighter at this cue, striving for a manly posture. "Say bye to Daddy."

Jessie put her arms around Galen's waist and squeezed. He took her cap from her hand and pulled it down over her head. "See you next time, pie. Mommy and Iwill find a burger place with a playground. How would that be?"

She nodded silently, looking at the ground.

Mother and daughter went to Penny's car and got in. Galen stood still, .watching. The winter wind buffeted his head. Hewaved first to them, then to their glowing red taillights. UDDENLY PENNY'S CAR stopped abruptly and Jessie emerged. The sight of her dashing unexpectedly toward him was surreal, as though the good-byes had been rolled back and Penny wasn't there at all. Before he could recover in time to speak, Jessie thrust the chocolate bar into his hand and quickly ran back to the car. She turned to face him from across the blacktop chasm and he saw that her little blue cap was on crooked. "Bye, Daddy!hshe cried, and jumped in.

In his car Galen turned the key in the ignition and put the chocolate bar on the seat next to him. Looking over at the forbidding pine forest, he remembered how inviting the pines were on a fine, warm weather day, when you could buy chicken and make a picnic of it on a shaded bed of soft needles. •
