WithAll Mv Might, hewrites,"Mvincomefromwrit¬ ingbeingasscantvasitwas,andnonexis¬ tentinintervals,Iwasunabletoprovide means to keep the Longfellow Square BookShopfromclosingitsdoors." Truthbetold,theinevitablefailureof thebusinesswashastenedbvtheactions otthePortlandPoliceDepartmentand theCumberlandCountyattorney.Acting onacomplaintofobsccnitvmadebvacit¬ izen.thepolicechieforderedthatsalesof IheBastard beprohibitedimmediately andthat"allcopiesofthebookaretobe shippedoutofthestateofMainewithin

ComethechilldaysofJanuary,broad sheetsoffrozenwaterwerecleanedof snow,thencutingridsbybladesdrawnby steaminghorseteams.Squadsofmen withback-breakingverticalsawscutthe gridsintoraftstowedthroughopenchan¬ nelstoshore,wherepuffingsteammotors raisedtiregreatblocksintotirewaitingice houses.Inside,theblocksshotdown rampsintosheathsofsawdustthrownup byshirtsleevedmenstraininginthe strangeicyheat.Icewasabusinessof weatherandwind,muscleandgravity.
“Andthehousefilledupwithsquare cakespiledasevenasthesidesofabam, trueanddeepblueinthesteamingdusk,” wrotepoetRobertP.TristramCoffin,a Kennebec man himself. “The men walkedbetweenwallsofMaine’scold wealth.”
MostMaineicehouseswere ownedbyNewYorkorWash¬ ingtonagentswhorarelysawa downcastriver;theirKennebec icehouseswereoftenbigger thantheircity'mansions.Agoodharvest¬ ingseasonmightlastfivemonths;the franticshippingseasonlastedseven,asthe darkvaultsoftheicehousesemptied.In 1887,some4,000schoonerssaileddown theKennebecbearingsome900,000tons ofice;cominghome,theycarriedover 115,000tonsofcoal-towarmMainers thatwinterbusymakingmoreice.
“ItislivelyatBankStreetandtireNorth Riverthesedays,”wroteonesharp-eyed reporterfortheNewYorkTribunein 1890.“Greatfour-mastersfromMaineare mooredtheredischargingiceintothe wagonsofthecityicecompanies.Down gothebigicetongsintothevaststeaming holdoftheship...upcometheshining squaresintoachutewheretheygospin-
ningintoalong,broadplatformwhere theyareseizedbysmallertongsinthe handsofmenwhostandbetweenthepeo¬ pleandsoftbutter,spoiledmeat,and warmdrinks.1lowhotitisonthedeckof thevesselandhowcolddownthere!The (schooner)SarahLawrencecarries2,500 tonsat$1.50aton,loadedinMaine.”
AtCaribbeanports,theicycargoeswere emissariesfromadistantworld,thedis¬ chargerampsthemselvesguardedby armedmenasthefrozengoldrumbled intodark,dampholdinghouses(seepho¬ tos,page30,ofaJamaicanportbeingvis¬ itedbyaMaineicebrig),wherechildren scamperedforthesmallestshardofthis miraclestuff,andanimalsandbirds flockedtothemeltingpuddlesleftbythis substancecoldasnight,brightasnoon. Andthebrightdollarssailedbacknorth¬ wardtothepocketsofmanyashrewd Yankee.Maine’sgreatrivaliniceexport wasthemightyHudson,wheretheice cropwasrainedoutthewinterof18891890.Mainersbeamedandhoveto:in thebanneryearof1890,over3,000men and1,000horseteamsworkedtheKen¬ nebec,arrdMainesentover3milliontons oficetotheworld.Proudly,Mainers etchedanicecutterintothenewstained glasswindowsoftheStateHousein Augusta,beforewhosefrontdoortheKen¬ nebecflowed.
But1890wasthelastboomyear.Inven¬ tionsofothercleverYankees,therefriger¬ atedrailroadcarandelectricalplants makingartificialice,endedtheneedfor nature’sharvest.By1910,manyofthe greaticehousesfromHallowelltoPittston, DresdentoGardiner,wereempty.

ItwasanovercastmorningonDecember6,1917.Thesksat st)a.m.gasehintsofanimpendingstormwhichwould notsweepthroughIlalifax,NosaScotia,untilearlsthefol¬ lowingdas'.ThedemandsofWorldWarIbroughtactisits andprosperits'totheportcits'onthisfatefulDecember morning.Thepopulationwasoverflowingwithtroopsandfami¬ lieswhowereattractedtotheareabecauseoftheplentifulemplosmentinducedbsthewar.Thelightbarelsreachedthroughthe cloudsatthisearlshour.Inthemidstofthedawn,theErenchship MontBlanc leftheranchorageontheoutskirtsoftheharbortojoin aeonsosgatheringinBedfordBasin.Inherhullshecarried2,300 tonsofwetanildrspicricacid,200tonsofTNT,10tonsofguncot¬ ton.and35tonsofbenzoil:ahighls'explosisemixture.
Justasthe MontBlanc madehermosc,theNorwegiansessel IMO, inballast,setofffromtheBasinboundforNessYorktopick upacargootreliefsuppliesforBelgium.Attheentrancetothenar-
rows,afteraseriesofill-judgedmaneuvers,the IMO struckthe MontBlanc inthebow.Thecollisionwasnotsevereinandof itself,butthe MontBlanc didcatchonfire.
Expectingtheshiptoblowimmediately,thecaptain,pilot,and crewoftheA loot B/rmclaunchedlifeboatsandtookretugeinthe nearbyDartmouthshore.Theshipburnedfor20minutes,drifting throughtheharboruntilitrestedagainstPier6,intheRichmond district,thebusy,industrialnorthendof1lalifax.Acrowdformed towatchtheburningboatmakeitswastowardlandfall,unaware oftheimminentdanger.
Justbefore9:05a.m.theA fontBlanc exploded.Notonepieceof herremainedbesidethedockwhereshehadfinishedhervoyage. Piecesofherrainedonthesurroundingarea,crashingthrough buildingswithenoughforcetoembedthemwherethevlanded. “Thisisauniqueoccupationbecauseall firefighters,nomatterwherewearefrom, considerourselvesmembersofthesame team,thereisnorivalryamongdifferent departments.Whenamanishurtfighting afirewithanotherdepartmenttheycon¬ siderthatoneoftheirownwashurt,”Ger¬ ryDiMilloofthePortlandFireDepart¬ mentsays.“Thereisaninformalagree¬ mentamongfirefightersthatifthereisa tragedyanywherewhereitiswithinreason togo,thefighterswillvolunteertogoand helpwiththefire.”
Thetraditionoftravelingfirefightershas enduredsincetheHalifaxExplosion. Civilians,firefighters,andforestrangers alikehavecompletedthefirefighting coursesandtrainingwhichenablethem tofightfiresallovertheUnitedStates. Thesequalifiedindividualsareputona list,waitingtobecalleduponbytheU.S. ForestService.
