Today,hisgrandsonDavidlivesatâGreenÂŹ trees,âthefamilyhomeinMountVernon. ItwasanovercastmorningonDecember6,1917.Thesksat st)a.m.gasehintsofanimpendingstormwhichwould notsweepthroughIlalifax,NosaScotia,untilearlsthefolÂŹ lowingdas'.ThedemandsofWorldWarIbroughtactisits andprosperits'totheportcits'onthisfatefulDecember morning.ThepopulationwasoverflowingwithtroopsandfamiÂŹ lieswhowereattractedtotheareabecauseoftheplentifulemplosmentinducedbsthewar.Thelightbarelsreachedthroughthe cloudsatthisearlshour.Inthemidstofthedawn,theErenchship MontBlanc leftheranchorageontheoutskirtsoftheharbortojoin aeonsosgatheringinBedfordBasin.Inherhullshecarried2,300 tonsofwetanildrspicricacid,200tonsofTNT,10tonsofguncotÂŹ ton.and35tonsofbenzoil:ahighls'explosisemixture.
Justasthe MontBlanc madehermosc,theNorwegiansessel IMO, inballast,setofffromtheBasinboundforNessYorktopick upacargootreliefsuppliesforBelgium.Attheentrancetothenar-

Expectingtheshiptoblowimmediately,thecaptain,pilot,and crewoftheA loot B/rmclaunchedlifeboatsandtookretugeinthe nearbyDartmouthshore.Theshipburnedfor20minutes,drifting throughtheharboruntilitrestedagainstPier6,intheRichmond district,thebusy,industrialnorthendof1lalifax.Acrowdformed towatchtheburningboatmakeitswastowardlandfall,unaware oftheimminentdanger.
Justbefore9:05a.m.theA fontBlanc exploded.Notonepieceof herremainedbesidethedockwhereshehadfinishedhervoyage.
