The PSC draws its 25th AnniversarySeason to a close with Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning Three Tall Women from April 20 through May 1.Told from the points of viewof three generations, this powerful play tells the story of a woman described by PSC as "both regal and charming, vicious and wretched." Mad Horse Theatre Company, 92 Oak Street, Portland. Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters opens April 1. Telling the story of the Prozarov family in four acts, Three Sisters uses muted action and a concentration on mood and emotion to depict the family's grim situation as a metaphor for Russiaitself.Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundaysat 5p.m. 828-1270.

Beginning May 21, the classic children's book The Secret Garden comes to life as a musical. The Theater Project, 14 School Street, Brunswick. Jean Anouilh's version of the Sophoclean tragedy Antigone will be performed on April 15, 16, and 17 at 7:30. Written and performed originally during France's Nazi occupation, Anouilh depicts Oedipus's daughter refusing to follow government laws that are an affronttohuman dignity.Tickets$6;call 729-8584.

Universil)' of Southern Maine, Gorham. April 16-18 and 21-25, Sinners, Saints, '" Fools, directed by Assunta Kent, will appear on the main stageof Russell Hall. This play isdescribed as "a comic, topsy-turvyworld where virgins outwit their lecherous captors, beggars are wiser than kings, and fools confound the learned." Moises Kaufman's Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde will be performed May 14, 15, 18, and 22 at 8 p.m. and May 16 and 23 at 2 p.m. Called "thrilling, unforgettable, maybe even lifechanging" by USA Today, this play "has the inevitability and much of the monumentality of a Greek tragedy." Penobscot Theatre Company, 183 Main Street, Bangor. Sunday in the Park with George by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine runs from April 21 through May 2. Described by PTC as "a scrumptious musical," this comedy presents the life of French impressionist George Seurat through the many characters of his famous painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grand Jatte." From May 12 through May 23, Tony Kushner's modem classic Angels in America Part 1I: Perestroika will provide the uplifting conclusion to this American epic. Even if you haven't seen Part I, Perestroika is a fulfilling, moving work. Sunday in the Park will be in the Bangor Opera House, while Angels in America willbe at 183Main Street. Call 942-3333.

Children's Theater of Maine. Rapunzel RePencilled, billed as a play written far and by girls, will be performed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday April 16, 17, 18.Then, for three weeks beginning April 30, the annual Young Playwrites Contest winners .••. ·ill be staged. Portland Symphony Orchestra, 477 Congress Street Mezzanine, Box 3573, Portland. On Tuesday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m., The Marriage of f\.1inumum and Maximum will be presented by the PSO. Featuring Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro: Overtme," Part's "Symphony No.3," and Mahler's "Symphony No.5," the evening promises an impressive mix of subtlety and power. On Saturday and Sunday, May 1 and 2, at 7:30 and 2:30 respectively,A Tribute to Duke Ellington celebrates the 100th birthday of this giant of American music. The evening will feature classics like "Mood Indigo," "Take the 'A' Train," and "Satin Doll." It promises to be a very popular show, so reserve your seats early! Both shows are in Merrill Auditorium. PCA Great Perfonnances, Merrill Auditorium, Portland. Some legendary stuff rolls into town this spring. Take advantage of it all. First, it'll celebrate by coming to see Porgy and Bess on Friday, April 16, at 8 p.m. Gershwin's classic opera will be fully-staged and orchestrated, transforming Merrill Auditorium into Catfish Row for one night only. Then Cats, the longestrunning and most successful musical in history, prowls into Portland on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 23-25, as part of PCA's Broadway series. Portland String QuartetlLARK Society for Chamber Music, P.O. Box 11, Portland. On Sunday, April 18, at 3 p.m. in the Woodfords Congregational Church, the PSQ will present Cesar Franck's Piano Quintet in F Minor, accompanied by pianist Frank Glazer. Also, the quintet will perform Walter Piston's String Quartet No.2 and Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 in D Maior. Call the Lark Society at 761-1522.

University of Southern Maine Depamnent of Music, 37 College Avenue, Gorham. The USM Jazz Ensemble, led by Scott Reeves, will perform in the Carthell Concert Hall on April 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 for the public, $3 for students. Ram Island Dance, 25A Forest Avenue, Portland. On April 30, Ram Island's Alive and Well, a periodic showing of new dances by area choreographers, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. for a $2 suggested donation. Spectral Evidence, a contemporary dance "essay" based on the Salem witch trials and feahuing an original percussion score performed live, will be performed at 7:30 on May 21 and 22 at the Portland Performing Arts Center.
