Sowhatbusinessdidaveryplainbrownwrenthinkshehad(lying,atthicketheight,back andforthinfrontofourcabinatHighlandLakeinFalmouthformonthsonendthisyear?And whywerewesobusyignoringher'?

Onesideofherroutewastheblindsideofourcottage,wherethehillissteepandslippery withpineneedlesasitdropsofftothelake.She'dziparoundthecornerpastourrustyproptine bottlesanddisappear.

Forgettablefromthestart,nottomentionshewasvastlyovershadowedbytheeaglesthat swoopedalongtheedgeofthelakeattreelevelontheheelsoftheevening,hunting.One night,abaldeaglelandedonatoweringpineaboveourbackporchandfrozeintoposition.For sixhourshesatonasinglebranch,wellintothedarkness,waiting,hisgazefixedonthespot overwhichourScottishterrierpresides.

Wetriedtospooktheeagleawaywithflashlights.Weshouted.Buthetookthoselong lowHapsandblendedintothenightonlyafterwe'ddespairedofhiseverleaving.Talkabout razzle-dazzle.

Throughthewhirlwindofcelebrations,snowstorms,andfootballgamesonTV.infact longafterwe'ddoneeverythingwecouldwiththeholidays,thewrenkeptflyingtotheblind sideofthecabinandthenuptoaplacesnuggledbetweentheraftersoxerourfrontporch,out ofsight,outofmind.

1don'tknowwhatmadeusfinallykx>kupthere.Butwhenwedid.werealizedthatamidall thehixipla.thiswrenhadpainstakinglypulledstrandafterstrandoffadedtinselfromlastyear's forgottenChristmastree,exposedfromsnowmelt,whichI'dtossedwithoutceremonythewinter beforeintothatno-man's-landbelowthepropanebottles,belowthethresholdofmemory.

Andhere,northofnowhere,withsolemnceremony,sparklingandshimmeringinawhorl ofstardustupintherafters,wasatiny,perfectlycoiffednestthisresourcefulcreaturehad fashionedoutoftwigs,bitsofgreenmoss,andsilversparklesrightoutofStudio54.

Holidaysbrinywhatyoumakeofthem.MarthaStewarthasnothingonthislittlerecycler.
