Chowder
A tasty blend of the fabulous, noteworthy, and absurd One Heck of a Paperweight
“This is going on my coffee table,” declared Portland-native actress Anna Kendrick during her acceptance speech for “Best Breakout Star” at the MTV Movie Awards. Best known for her performances in Up in the
Air and the Twilight series, Maine’s ‘It’ girl remained humble and taciturn. “I’m not cool enough to win…” We beg to differ.
Murder, She Writes
Rough Enough?
Let’s fly to D.C. to learn how to rough it in Maine! The Smithsonian’s new exhibit America on the Move takes us on the tepid adventures of a typical family’s 1930s York Beach vacation in their Trav-L-Coach. We Mainers know better; with only 121 Airstreams actively listed in Maine’s BMV, it’s clear we either love our tents or flatly refuse to register our bright new things. (Afraid to fly? Buy this 1977 Airstream Sovereign–for sale in Windham for $1,500–and cruise to D.C. in style. Call 310-0018.)
Taste of Maine…
on the Jersey shore? Visitors to the ferry terminal in Weehawken, New Jersey, love their Maine lobster at Robongi, a Japanese restaurant. “It sells pretty well; we mostly use it in our sushi.” Tickled by the novelty, “People from Maine do seek it out, but it’s rare,” says Chef James. robongi.com

Only a doctor with an overactive imagination could pen nail-biting medical thrillers worthy of a TV spin-off. Maine author (and retired MD) Tess Gerritsen is the mind behind TNT’s new drama Rizzoli & Isles, based on her book series of the same name. “It has been kind of a fantasy; Hollywood is such a different world than publishing,” says Gerritsen.
ME-OWch! ME-OWch!
Sunset at Campobello
A crew from Ken Burns’s Florentine Films wrapped up filming last month at the Roosevelt cottage on Campobello Island. Missing, however, was the director himself. “It’s very early in the process; he’s not involved in the field work. He has not [to my knowledge] been there,” says producer Jane Baucom. The Roosevelts is set to air on PBS in 2013.
“I find that funny, because we use castor oil infused with skunk essence or urine, so it makes me think maybe Calvin Klein’s Obsession for Men smells like cat piss.” –Wally Jakubas of Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Mammal Group on the Wildlife Conservation Society’s celebrated use of the popular men’s fragrance to attract big cats [“Big Cats Obsess Over Calvin Klein’s ‘Obsession for Men,’” Wall Street Journal, June 8, 2010]. Could single women with house cats be onto something after all?
Whatever Happened to… Whatever Happened to…
the Barking Squirrel? A popular al fresco bistro in the late 1990s, the Deering Oaks Park attraction first closed and then suffered the indignity of being burned down a few years later by a Porta-Potty arsonist. Plans for a new building–complete with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that could be rolled up like garage doors–have been stalled by lack of funding. The cost? “About $1 million in private donations,” says former Portland mayor Anne Pringle. “There’s such a demand–it would be an amazing addition to the community. We’d love to see it serve as a restaurant and conservatory, with an outdoor plaza for summer concerts.” Ferocious!
