EFT Tapping karenstclairEFT.com 207-878-8315

ou’re holding summer in your hands. We’ve nicknamed this July/August issue “Summerguide 2” because even summer deserves a second chance. Especially this summer. So many places are finding ways to reinvent themselves, to open up. The theme across the coast of Maine is a summer delayed is not summer denied. There’s no such thing as too much summer. We’re so much not done with it. Summer—the Comeback Kid! As much as I adored our latest issue—and it was a triumph for our staff—I love the bird that just flew in. I love sequels. Many sequels even beat the originals. Summerguide 2 is in good company: Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is better than the original. For starters, it has Tina Turner in it. Turns out, we do need another hero. I’m voting for Summerguide 2. The Philadelphia Story is a beloved movie, but I like the update, High Society, better. Looking for camp? Bride of Frankenstein has Elsa Lanchester. Many great sequels are unforgettable, ridiculous, and somehow necessary. Besides, many of us have the Bride of Frankenstein’s hair! So what’s different here? This issue charts a summer that didn’t exist five weeks ago. We’re all explorers, completely different than we were five weeks ago. We need even more magazining, with even more explorations of this strange new world we’re experiencing together. Summer: “See, here it is. I hold it towards you.”

Mother’s Day is Every Day My niece, Shelley Sampson, native of Portland and now resident of Boulder, Colorado, sent me [Portland Monthly] as one of my Mother’s Day gifts. What a wonderful surprise! I am a native of Portland and left at age 22. What a joy to receive your magazine. I’m reading of outstanding Maine individuals. I want to suggest you add my mother-in-law, Helen Chapman Frost, who in 1944 became the second woman ever elected to the Portland City Council. Then she became [the first female leader] of the Council. The Press Herald wrote an article (many, actually) about Mrs. Frost as one of the early “mayors” of the city. She was active in the Audubon Society and many others. Janet Beem Frost, Macon, Georgia Color My World [See “Synaesthesia,” Summerguide 2020] Oh my God! There’s a name for it! I thought I was just weird. I’ve never told anyone about this for fear of ridicule. Thank you for re-affirming my sanity! P.S. Names have colors too… Susan Lachance, Online Submission Navigating a River The piece on the Royalls [“Muddy Waters,” Summerguide 2020] was great— very well done. Bruce Pratt, Swanville

Social distancing is a breeze for pairs tacking to the finish line.

ou don’t have to social distance as a couple—you’re already in a social bubble. What’s more freeing than taking that bubble out onto the high seas? “A lot of sailors cruise with just their families or people in their immediate circle,” says Molly White, president of the J/24 US Class Association. Molly races with her husband, Carter White, in their J/24 Al. “We started sailing in Falmouth in early June, almost a month behind schedule. We can go out and cruise as just the two of us, but we usually race as part of a five-person team. The COVID-19 plan changes the way we sail, with less contact between people and with the materials.” The association “now has two divisions: Short-Handed (three crewmembers or less) and Fully-Crewed. The divisions are scored differently so people who feel less comfortable and choose to sail with fewer people aren’t penalized. We’ve been trying to revitalize the Monhegan Island Race,” a leg-

endary contest that’s made headlines for 92 years. “It’s 141 nautical miles, and it’s the epitome of social distancing within the quarantine bubble.” The J/24 Fleet 43 season in Falmouth opens with a double-handed regatta. “Carter and I do it together.” Is It Like Piano for Four Hands? “I call it the still-married regatta. It takes a fine balance and tests our communication and coordination skills. But double-handing with Carter is actually the least stressful to me because he has to be patient with me, or I could mutiny and then there’s no one to help sail the boat. Some couples just can’t sail together, but we make it through!” “I’m doing the race, but not with my fiancée, Tara,” Falmouth sailor Finn Hadlock says. “I’m sailing with my friend Eliza. She drove the boat for the last two races while I crewed for her. A lot of people are joining clubs to connect and get together. J u ly / A u g u s t 2 0 2 0 1 9

Talk the Way You Sail “Two weekends ago, Tara and I went out to Little Whaleboat Island and met up with a couple of other boats for a lobster bake,” Finn says. “We’ve been more motivated than ever to make the jump and get out on the water.” The thing about weekends is, “The best moment is always the first night out.” “I agree,” Tara says. “It’s Friday night–” “You’re out of work; you get on the boat–” “The whole weekend is ahead of you…” “And you’re met with the fresh, crisp air. We’re part of Fleet 43 and Portland Yacht Club. The J/24 Class Association is where we get a lot of inspiration on the changes we can make to our boat to comply with COVID-19 guidelines.” Molly says, “On a J/24 Class international call, I realized how lucky we are in Maine right now. Some places aren’t allowing any sailing. Others have restrictions on who you can sail with—only your family or people you shelter in place with. In Newport, Rhode Island, you’re only allowed to sail with three people. We don’t have statewide restrictions like that. Sail Maine is a sailing community and program for kids and adults. Their rule right now is you have to be from the same family to sail together.” Sail Maine executive director Michael McAllister says, “People are still shaking this whole thing off. There’s been a resurgence with Lasers, the single-handed sailboat. They’ve been out racing on the weekends and started their contests earlier than usual this summer. We’re just starting to see more social groups choosing sailing” as a thrilling way to quarantine.

rive-in lover Jesse Stenbak, our associate publisher, files this exploration of Pride’s Corner: “Friday night with Tori and our kids Iris, Eli, and Esme begins just after seven as we pull up to the gate to see Back to the Future. The ticket taker says only ‘hello’ as she scans my phone. By the time we roll in, the lucky spots in the first three rows are mostly taken. Cars park between posts instead of at posts. As we unload our blankets and chairs, the intense silence strikes us. In years past, we’ve seen kids running around, dogs barking, Frisbees tossed under the screen. Not tonight. Everyone stays with their cars unless visiting the Snack Shack. When we recognize people, we just awkwardly wave as they slip back to their car. “I stumble through the dark to grab cheeseburgers ($4) and sodas ($2) for the kids. Everyone in line is separated by more than six feet. When it’s my turn, I exchange spare pleasantries with the woman behind the counter. In past years she’d chat you up about your favorite movie and what you want to see next. The only time we engage a neighboring car is when my son Eli starts talking about Jeeps having images of hidden animals in them. The woman in the Jeep next to us joins in the spoof and says it’s true, but she hasn’t found hers yet. This year the movie is good, the weather is perfect, but the people six feet distant seem a million miles away.” n

We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last." —Interview with Yoko Ono by Colin W. Sargent, Summerguide 2003.

They have everything figured out.” They give us our order instantly, and we pull forward onto Chase Hill Road for the world’s easiest getaway. We head for the beach. to two bespoke bottles with screw tops, the ingredients tagged. They’re really fun. I’ve picked K Lo Jungle Bird Cocktail (Dixie Bull Rum, Aperol, pineapple, lime). It reminds me of a rum punch at the Swizzle Inn in Bermuda (a favorite haunt when I was stationed there as a Navy ensign, age 22), but with a citrus twist. The Old Fashioned Cocktail ($12–Langsford Road Bourbon, sarsaparilla, sassafras, boozy cherry) is reminiscent of a smoky Manhattan. There’s barely a scuffle for the maraschino cherry, luminous in moonlight. J u ly / A u g u s t 2 0 2 0 5 7

Our 14-inch Sausage Pizza ($16–pomodoro, house ricotta, Italian sausage, Calabrian chili, grana padano, babe kale) is spicy, exciting. We share and enjoy voraciously. We dive into the Asparagus Salad ($13– arugula, crispy speck, Beemster goat gouda, fennel, preserved lemon-basil vinaigrette). The arugula is meaty, fragrant, delicious. The Nashville Hot-Breast Quarter ($16) is served with Duck Fat Cornbread, jalapeño-jicama-ginger slaw, Carolina mustardLangsford Road BBQ. Wow. What a beach picnic! Seagull and ocean sounds optional. This whole romantic dinner with tip is $72. Warning: bring your own napkins. n Batson River Tasting Room, 12 Western Avenue, Kennebunk. rive north just past Nunan’s Lobster Hut on Route 9. Turn right on Marshall Point Road. When you pass through a tunnel of trees and enter an old set of granite gates, it’ll hit you. This is all it takes to travel through time to the 1960s—in a most magical way.

By Colin W. Sargent

Inside this stunning octagonal oceanfront retreat, you suddenly find yourself in the 1965 Elizabeth Taylor/ Richard Burton movie The Sandpiper.

In 1964, Viola B. Kneeland, a Boston maritime attorney who headed up the firm Kneeland, Splane, and Kydd, commissioned this high-concept midcentury modern masterpiece on a 200-runningfeet crescent of oceanfront. The plans were drawn up by Palmquist & Wright, the designer Richard B. Pollman, of Detroit, Michigan. They’d just had a hand in the design for the home of jazz great Dave Brubeck and partnered with House & Garden in celebration of the eleJ u ly / A u g u s t 2 0 2 0 6 9

he sellers are the Tito family. “We bought it in 1969,” Gary Tito says. “My dad [the late Benny Tito, who passed away five years ago] fought in the Battle of the Bulge as an infantryman in the 75th Army Division. [In 1949] he started Colonial Pharmacy in Dock Square.” Gary remembers guests coming out here to celebrate after performing at Kennebunkport Playhouse. “Gene Hackman came out and had a lobster dinner. Penny Fuller came at least twice. She had lobster, too.”

Some Enchanted Evening “I remember the first time I came to Maine,” says Penny Fuller when we call her in New York at press time. “It was also the first time I tried lobster—it must have been at the octagonal house. You can have Big Sur. The Maine coast is beautiful! At Kennebunkport Playhouse, I was playing Nellie Forbush,” the lead character in South Pacific. After the show in Kennebunkport, I got a review saying I was terrific but looked like I was ‘a refugee from a sock hop.’ Too young!” Fun fact: Portland’s Andrea Martin recently told Hot Spots magazine about her first paid gig. “When I was 13, I performed Liat in South Pacific at the Kennebunkport Playhouse, and I think I got paid for that. Penny Fuller played the lead.” When we tell her this, Fuller fires off: “Holy cow! No! Well how about that? If I was ‘a refugee from a sock hop,’ Lieutenant Cable must have been robbing the cradle with Andrea! Wonderful!” Asked for a movie so a new generation of viewers can see her in action, Fuller says, “Definitely All the President’s Men (1976). I knew Bob Redford because I did Barefoot in the Park with him on Broadway. I was playing the part of Sally Aiken, a fellow reporter at The Washington Post based on Marilyn Berger.” In a key scene, Woodward and Bernstein are furious at Sally. “I asked Bob, ‘Why did she sit on this story so long? What did she say to them?’ 7 0 p o r t l a n d m o n t h ly m a g a z i n e

“Bob said, ‘Wait one minute.’ Then he walked away. Bob came back. ‘I just called Marilyn Berger. She said she told them, I guess I don’t have the taste for the jugular you guys have.’ It got written into the script!”

he octagonal house was a great place to grow up, Gary says. “We called it the Beach House. We kept our Boston Whaler in that little basin. There were other advantages for a highschool kid. The French doors to our bedrooms opened directly to the wraparound porch. Each room let you walk out to beautiful views of the marsh. The great part was you could come in that way, too, if you came in late. You didn’t have to come in through the living room.” Not that that isn’t a distinct pleasure for lucky guests. Entering the vaulted living room from the ocean side, you stop in your tracks. “I know,” listing agent Laura J. Ross says. “This starburst ceiling is spectacular.” Dark beams fan across a natural-wood background like a hypnotic op-art sculp-

ture. Just as dramatic: the floor-to-ceiling fireplace. The large wooden spiral stair to the lower level is another showstopper. The possibilities are endless. “Benny Tito loved to paint and sketch here,” Ross says. A painter—like Liz Taylor’s character in The Sandpiper. The living room has huge sliding-glass windows full of sea roses, rocks, and views to Portugal. From left to right, the panorama sparkles from Goose Rocks Beach, East and West Goose Rocks islands, Anthony Island, Seal Rocks, and Stage Island. Deft design conquers this amazing space with amazing grace. It’s like being in a conch shell. Each of the four bedrooms has a water view; the large add-on master bedroom has a sunset view of the Rachel Carson Preserve marsh. The shake siding reflects the terrain. There’s wonderful privacy on this half-acre lot. And yet… Because of the tumultuous times, “there haven’t been a lot of showings yet,” Ross says. “Through the winter and COVID it was brutal.” Isn’t there interest about the midcentury architecture here? “It’s really the waterfront the buyers are going for,” she says. “It’s too bad. I haven’t had a buyer yet who’s appreciated the architecture.” We’re all hoping a midcentury architecture buff will see past the deferred maintenance—the need for kitchen and bath updates, more glass, and deckwork. I have a final question for Gary. What kind of music did your parents listen to when they were out on the deck, looking at the ocean? “Dad listened to the Red Sox. Mom, who died five months ago, was the Johnny Mathis fan.” In the distance, a sandpiper skitters by. Do you remember ever hearing Mathis singing “The Shadow of Your Smile” on the hi–fi? “I’ll say yes for you, Colin.” n Price: $2.3M. Taxes are $16,147.

Who knew the inspiration for the movie Sabrina was sparked here in Maine? A Blue Hill screenwriter and a character named Biddeford Poole are your first clues. By Colin W. Sa rgent

he Fred Astaire romp The Pleasure of His Company (1961) revolves around the return of a globe-trotting gadabout for his daughter’s wedding. After a 20-year absence. With his disapproving first wife looking on. Mainer Gary Merrill joins a cast that includes Debbie Reynolds and Lilli Palmer (the film’s best performance). But the big hook is, the Astaire character’s name is Biddeford Poole. Who was the screenwriter for this movie, anyway? And what’s up with the theme of return? He must have had a Maine connection. Ayuh! Samuel A. Taylor (1912–2000) loved his ‘drafty old farmhouse’ in East Blue Hill,” says his son, novelist & screenwriter David C. Taylor, who lives in nearby Brooklin. “My dad’s play Sabrina Fair was inspired by a neighbor of 72 p o r t l a n d magazine

before the play went to Broadway. He wrote the screenplay during the spring and summer of 1953.” This chauffeur, his daughter, and their garage were also the inspirations for the blockbuster Billy Wilder movie Sabrina (1954) as well as the 1994 remake. But only the first had Audrey Hepburn. She returns from education in Paris to dazzle her father’s employer’s two sons—one of them named David. Did young David Taylor meet Hepburn? “I knew her as a child. One spring vacation my parents stayed in her apartment. Ironically, my brother and I stayed at a garage about two Samuel Taylor with wife blocks away.” Dad Samuel Taylor also wrote the Suzanne at home in East screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock’s Blue Hill, 1977. Vertigo—this time with a morbidly returning theme. Maybe Taylor was telling us, for better or worse, not that ‘you can’t go home again’ but that you must. n

ours in East Blue Hill who had a two-story, four-car garage with a live-in chauffeur who’d raised a daughter there. The daughter grew up and moved away—from Maine to New York. Dad watched the chauffeur and wondered what his life was like. “The garage, north of the house and tennis court, still stands. Dad told me the chauffeur seemed ‘in their lives but not of their lives.’” He began writing Sabrina Fair in 1952 and finished in the fall of 1952. “My brother and I suddenly found ourselves switching from grade school in New York to Brooklin, Maine.
