10 Things I Love About October

1. Sweater weather! Dido models a little Acadia National Park number in our TOC. 2. Boating is almost poignant in October. There’s nothing like viewing spectacular shore foliage from offshore. 3. Tourtières! It’s not just about pumpkin spice. Other cold-weather comfort foods start reappearing on the menu. Taste the joy of our Franco-American heritage to the soundtrack of Josée Vachon’s singing/guitar-playing/clogging in The Traditions of Québec and Acadia: www. youtube.com/watch?v=9Q8WOdfMWKU. 4. Warm-hearted, hot-headed Scorpios, start celebrating our birthday (October 24 to November 21)! It’s time to get your sting on! 5. The lines have thinned, so now you can grab a slice of beach pizza, sidestep the gulls, and walk to the end of the pier at Old Orchard Beach under the stars. It’s National Pizza Month! 6. Mysterious, apocalyptic fall high tides. The surfers all turn out. 7. Not every month boasts 31 days. The first letter looks like a pumpkin, and the last day is a doozy. Sometimes we get two full moons! 8. Fires in the fireplace. Who isn’t drawn to a warm fire on a cool night? My wife is drawn to the fireplace like a cat, and actually, what creatures aren’t? 9. The last frames of The Hunt for Red October take us to Maine. Luckily, we’re already here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCqR0_a6_so 10. It’s not March.

Maine Specialty Tea Blends Stonington and Cushing

We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last." —Interview with Yoko Ono by Colin W. Sargent, Summerguide 2003.

LIGHTHOUSE LOVERS UNITE I’m writing to you about “Maine Lighthouse Odyssey” in July/August. I loved it and will make it my own mission to see as many as I can. In the article, Carol Blake of Norway says she would set a murder mystery on Monhegan Island: “It’s like stepping back in time. There’s the lighthouse and museum, as well as many hiking trails, a school, hotel, brewery, boats, dangerous currents and even a rusty shipwrecked vessel on the island.” I have written just that book. In 2018, Eventide was published—a mystery with a twist on the order of Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train. I would love to mail a copy of my book to Carol. If I were to send it to you, would you be able to get it to her? Kim Kalicky, Portland I received my magazine today. What a great article! eon is the vibrant niche where business and culture collide. Just ask John Roberts of Jayar Signs. A city is most spectacular when it has a glow on. When we called Bailey Sign in Westbrook, they said nobody in Maine repairs or designs neon from glass. They said we’d have to contact an outof-state guy.

His name is Neon Williams. I went to his shop [in Somerville, MA] one time, but he wasn’t open that day. Neon’s a funny business. First it’s hot, then everybody says it’s

dead, then it comes back. I find myself in a unique position: I’m the only full-service neon-glass shop in southern Maine. How did you get started in neon?

My father opened up a branch of United Neon in Houlton in 1938. I was born up there in 1941. But everybody went running back to Portland because the neon business went dark during World War II when there were blackouts in all the cities. Dad worked on Liberty ships as a painter at the shipyard in South Portland. I went to South Portland High, 1956-59. Then I got married and went back for another year. I took some night courses in electricity at South-

ern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, courses in engineering drawing. After the war, my father worked as a sign man at United Neon on Elm Street in Portland. The building still stands. I have a picture: my father’s in it, my brother’s in it, the crew of 1950. I joined them in 1957. The year of Sputnik!

Yeah, Sputnik. I was 16 and hired on with United Neon as an electrician for signs. Then I started learning the sheet metal trade, plastic trade, welding. My father was a sign painter, so I knew about that. I could do anything in the shop. I stayed there until 1959. Then I went to Coyne Sign Co. OCTOBER 2021 17

If you’d lived in New York or Hong Kong, how much more money would you have made?

I don’t think I’d have made as much. A lot of neon we get today is made in China. Even the Shipyard signs I designed are made in China now. A neon transformer used to have an iron core. The transformers are a lot lighter now. Tell us about the moment when you first saw Times Square.

My sister lived in Englewood, NJ, so we went there quite a lot. Neon was in my blood! I had a bigger feeling when I went to Las Vegas. Most of it’s LED now. Tell us about some of your non-neon signs.

I started my sign business in 1975. At first I did a lot of gold leaf. The Marlborough is still there. Gold leaf job. Early 1980s. They’d had an art student do it on a window. I scraped off his work and then did my work. Quite a bit of difference. F. Parker Reidy’s was a nice place. I did a lot of work for Parker. What electric signs, not just neon, do you miss from Portland’s cultural landscape?

Old Orchard Beach was full of neon when I was a kid. When I was at Coyne, they had the Seven Seas bar sign with animated fish swimming around. Right on the corner of East Grand and the street that leads to the Pier. The Coca-Cola sign in Congress Square was animated, a Donnelly creation. When they passed the billboard law, it was really a sign ordinance. Suddenly I couldn’t put up an animated neon sign. “It’s against the law. It’s about safety.” I guess no one ever got into a car accident looking at the CocaCola sign. Have you ever imagined the city of Portland without neon? When we close our eyes we see Three Dollar Deweys, Portland Monthly, Becky’s, and on and on.

It would be hard. Ever run into a group who’s tried to stop the use of neon in Maine because it’s too urban?

I made a sign for a guy in Kennebunk. He put it up, but the town said it had to come down. He won because he said it was a piece of art. What is art? I use the term “artist” loosely for myself. I’ve never tried to palm myself off as an artist, but I recognize I am. I’ve always sketched and drawn. It all comes together if you read things and do things and have a curious mind. It came down to this: my sticker signature was on it. Of all the letters in the alphabet, what’s the hardest to create in neon?

The absolute worst is an O. I just had to do the word “BOOKS,” and to get those two Os looking alike takes a little work. If it’s all by itself it’s fine, but if there are two in a row, there’s bound to be comparison. What are the sounds of neon? There’s a humming from the transformer and a tickling kind of flicker inside the tubes, like something live scratching to get out.

Sometimes a tube will flicker because the brightener inside it hasn’t stabilized. Some of the new argon tubes will flicker while it’s stabilizing. Neon doesn’t flicker. I made a neon sign for a movie studio that did flicker. They wanted the sign to look like it was in the desert with the wind blowing, where it would go off and on because of a faulty connection. They wanted the sign to look just like I hate signs to look: broken. You love neon, but tell us about some neon jobs you’ve hated.

Y

ou know the credit union on Forest Avenue below the post office? A. R. Wright used to be there where the trains came in. On top of those silos was a huge neon sign. The neon sign spelled out A. R. Wright Coal Company, with two lumps of coal with flames that flashed. It was enormous. It was so big you could get right inside it. But you had to get the pigeons out first. The silos were filled with birds. You had to hang on to the cables that held the thing up, because 10,000 pigeons came flying up when you intruded on their space. Four and five to a nest, cooing. What a stink! The smell of ammonia. Guano four inches deep. Every ten years someone OCTOBER 2021 19

A RT & SCIEN CE had to shovel it out and start again. Neon sounds thrilling, but what about workplace injuries?

I’ve been shocked installing a transformer on a foggy day in Falmouth. You couldn’t see the crew on the street. They turned on the electrodes while I was up on the roof, behind the sign. Fifteen thousand volts went through one arm and down the other. The guy who was with me, Leo, knocked me

Has COVID affected the neon business?

Shipyard—and I’m sure the other breweries—cater to the barrooms, and some have closed up. Have you ever had a dream with one of your neon designs in it?

No, I don’t dream in neon. Want to know the truth? I played football and I dream of running, but I can’t run anymore. I was a cornerback at South Portland High.

Any perks in your line of work?

What year did you go from being a master tradesman to being an artist--not in your own eyes, but around town.

INGLEY PRESS was devastated in 1981. L.L. Bean, their premier client since World War II, announced a change in its catalog printing specifications to rotogravure. Dingley had specifically keyed its presses for the retailer. Whispers went through local publishing businesses that Dingley was imperiled. But Dingley owner Chris Pierce wasn’t going to let his loyal employees down. Pierce went on a mission to rebuild his business, redefine it, and retool—which he accomplished successfully. Years later, he sold the business, missed the railroad clatter of his presses running, and bought it back again. Right now, you’re probably being visited by Dingley every day—via catalogs such as Wayfair that go all over the world. Dingley Press is working its way toward the top half of The Maine 100™. On a Clear Day

You Can See Forever What’s more than forty stories tall, shaped like an obelisk, and built of Maine granite? a) the Washington Monument b) the Penobscot Narrows Bridge support towers c) both

he Penobscot Narrows Bridge is one of just four bridge observatories standing in the world today. At 420 feet (forty-two stories), it’s the tallest occupied structure in Maine, and the highest bridge observatory on the planet, according to Maine.gov. The observatory provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, including historic Fort Knox. Eileen Bartlett has been a part-time usher for the observatory for the past three years.

What drew you to this unusual job? Do you have any personal connection to the bridge?

My grandpa grew up a half mile from here. His father drowned in the river on Thanksgiving Day, 1894, two months before my grandpa was born. That was back when a ferry ran between Fort Knox and Bucksport. The old WaldoHancock Bridge was built in 1931. 28 P O R T L A N D MAGAZINE

I used to be terrified of the Waldo-Hancock Bridge. Did it scare you too?

No, not really. When I was a kid, a friend and I would get in the middle of the bridge and wait for a truck to pass by and make the suspension bridge shake up and down! What happens when someone gets vertigo in the observatory?

I’ve never seen anyone panic. They’ll say, “Oh god, we’re high!” and they’ll have to come right down, but it doesn’t happen every day. People are warned that it’s floor-toceiling glass, so you can look straight out at

the horizon. Some people end up hugging the wall the whole time. Has anyone ever acted unruly up there?

Not that I’ve seen. Last week we had a group of sixty-five kids around seven years old up here on a field trip. Everyone was excellent and well behaved. They were kind of in awe. They actually acted worse when they got back on the ground. How’s the leaf peeping in September and October?

It looks like a painter took his palette and brush and dotted the hillside. Once the foliage starts to turn, the colors continually change from day to day. You’ve got the picturesque town of Bucksport on one side of the river, and the other side is all gorgeous foliage. n

or twenty-eight straight years you go to the San Diego Comic Con with your dad. For five or six years you sell high-end watches. Then you start selling high-end comics as a side hustle. You get an MBA at National University in San Diego. You have to travel in this business. I am a facilitator for grading companies. There aren’t many of us. I witness signatures and sometimes fly them by air directly to a collector. It’s lucrative to be a witness. OCTOBER 2021 37

IN THE HU N T How are the first three issues of Kevin Eastman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doing? They’ve come a long way from Westbrook.

Oh yeah, one of the first issues sold last week for $245K.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 BREAKS RECORD AT $245,000

ComicConnect sold a CGC 9.8 copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (1984) with white pages (CGC #3866366001) for $245,000 on September 1. This sale set a record for highest price paid for a Copper Age comic book. It beat out the recent sale of another CGC 9.8 copy with white pages (CGC #2081174001) that sold on ComicConnect for $240,000 on August 24, 2021. These two recent sales completely eclipsed a January Heritage sale of a CGC 9.2 copy of the book, that was signed by Kevin Eastman, by over $200,000 (see “’Batman’ #1 Sells at a Record $2.2 Million”). The sale also comes within $20,000 of the top sale of a Bronze Age comic book; which was a copy of Marvel Spotlight #5, featuring the first appearance of Ghost Rider, that went for $264,000 in June (see “Ghost Rider Sells For $264,000 at Heritage Auctions”). Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (1984) is the first appearance of Turtles, Splinter, and Shredder, and was self-published by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It is a rare book to find in high-grades with only 3,000 copies printed by Mirage Studios. —icv2.com/articles/news/view/49224

Before, as a fan, you could go and get a signature. COVID shut that down when the conventions stopped. For the first three months of the pandemic, everything was shut down. Instead of stopping demand, it increased. We lost a lot of stores. What we did was double down on signatures. How many people in Maine do what you do?

money, but they can’t always get what they want. They may request a one-ofa-kind piece that only one person owns who would never sell it. These collectors would put the comics in a trust and will be with their families forever. The sheikhs don’t like to be told there are things they can’t buy. How many comics do you have in your personal collection?

I have about 200,000 comics in long boxes. About 10,000 of them are graded.

El Rey Comics is headquartered at 75 Bishop Street in Portland, yet you have an international clientele.

Tell me about grading.

I’ve traveled to Argentina, China, Mexico—I’m from Tijuana—Paris. China likes to buy a lot, but everyone’s afraid of counterfeits. The sheikhs have lots of

It has archival-level protection. Once it’s graded, it takes the argument of value off the table. Originally, artists would not sign the front cover, as it was considered disrespectful. They would sign inside by their name. Over time, they would sign on the front on top of the type or in a blank area. Nowadays they’ll sign anywhere. What is the most valuable comic you’ve worked with?

Action Comics #1 is worth $400K. It’s the first time Superman appeared. What makes some comics so valuable?

Condition is everything. It’s not rarity, it’s condition. In the 1940s the paper was different, and the ink had lead, and the staples

“The art in

When I lived in San Diego you’d hear stories of people finding comics in their attics from when soldiers went to war and they left their collections behind, and when you picked them up they would just crumble. Do you have any security measures?

Anything over a certain value you store at the bank. Every book that comes in, I scan. Every graded book is sealed up and has a serial number. If someone stole a book, I would report it stolen. If someone tried to resell it in its graded state, they’d get caught because of the serial number. What is the most misunderstood thing about what you do?

Some people think comics are for kids. Comics are a legitimate business. They’re feeding more stories into Netflix, Hulu, and pop culture. What is your favorite contemporary series?

R

ight now I’m reading The Department of Truth by James Tynion. He’s the hottest writer. The premise is that if enough people believe a conspiracy theory, it becomes true. How long does it take for a comic to go from idea to printed book?

If you’re not at Marvel or DC, it would take about six months to flesh out an idea. If approved, it would take eighteen months for a six-issue story arc. How does one know who they should collect?

The business is built on speculation. Disney is a public company. They tell you what’s coming four years out. Collectors know what's coming and start buying them up. I don’t see it as a bubble. What about Maine authors?

Stephen King is writing one right now with his son Owen King, called Sleeping Beauties. Joe Schmalke is the rare breed who writes and creates his own. Oh, and of course Kevin Eastman of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. n OCTOBER 2021 39

Whatever did they teach you in those four years?” says Yalcin Kaya, owner of Pier 77 in Kennebunkport. “Executive chefs aren’t just cooks. They’re department-head managers who direct a whole range of things beyond how to make sauces or tasty dishes.” When he bought Pier 77 in 2016, Kaya was surprised that his J-1 trainees craved essential management skills. They had just a year to launch their brilliant careers. (A J-1 is a non-immigrant visa issued by the

You learn from them—it’s normal.” WHAT’S ON THE MENU orking with the menu and staff from different countries is a challenge Yilmaz savors. “Most of the time, our menu is American cuisine. People want to see mussels, fried clams, different seafood. This year we have J-1 trainees from Thailand and Turkey. I talk to my guys and honor them for their ideas we can combine together to improve ourselves and the restaurant. They learn the classic foods, but we experiment too, sometimes offering a different menu special. Recently we showed a Thai influence: haddock with coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger, and bok choy in a stew.” His favorite dish to prepare? “Two, actually. Homemade ravioli, and risotto. A chef I worked with in Istanbul made the best risotto but wouldn’t give up his grandmother’s recipe. I finally said to him, ‘I can do anything, and if I can make this risotto too, it will help you,’ so he finally gave it to me. I’ve given it to all of my staff as well.” Although the J-1 visa allows only one twelve-month stay (Yilmaz is an exception), Kaya often follows his trainees’ successes on LinkedIn and receives personal notes from them. Recently Archie from the Philippines got a job in Dubai. “Mr. Kaya, thank you for all your teachings. You didn’t only teach us to be chefs, you also inspired us to seek higher and more challenging positions.” With students like this, life is dessert. n

age the kitchen. A cook is just a cook—a chef is different.” On higher ground, “everyone can be a chef, but not everyone can be a good chef.” Yilmaz’s enthusiasm panned out. He’s now the executive chef at Pier 77, with Kaya sponsoring him and helping him to get his green card. “Yalcin told me, this will require your being here for two years. It may be hard for you and your family. Consider that before accepting.” And it’s true. “My mother is sad and misses me. But if I’m happy, she’s happy. It’s four years now, and I do miss home, but [at 29] I’m also thinking of my future, and this is a good place for me right now. With Covid fears, I’m able to tell my family that in Maine we are very careful. That’s welcome news for them.” What Yilmaz likes most is working with the staff. “I like to train people. When they come here, they don’t know much other than how to use the knife. I learned from Yalcin’s training that respect is key to be-

covering topics that include: how to hire, train, and manage kitchen staff; scheduling; planning menu prices; food cost control; labor cost control; waste and theft control; meeting industry-approved hygiene, sanitation, and safety standards; and monthly analysis of profit-and-loss statements. Kaya administers midterm and final exams, and successful participants receive a Certificate of Completion. Kaya’s background, including ten years as a general manager for Marriott, eminently qualifies him to lead these his charges. “They’d send me to hotels in bad shape to fix them up. One I worked at in Savannah had ten managers in ten years. There were such bad practices in place, like all the management meeting at 9 o’clock for an hour or two during the busiest hours of the day. It took me six months, but the hotel became one of the best in Savannah.

A New Novel by Paul Dione About The Book: Madeleine Moreau, poverty stricken and alone, struggles to provide for herself and her children, her future bleak, foreboding and empty. She draws strength in her darkest hour when the Monsignor of Paris charges her with witchcraft and threatens to tear her family apart. The novel follows the lives of Madeleine Moreau and her antagonist, the Monsignor of Paris... Marc Moreau, Madeleine’s husband, and his journey home from Russia following Napoleon’s defeat... Madame Leblanc and her disavowal of aristocracy for the cause of liberty... Michel Bois, a popular French sculptor, who forsakes Madeleine for the salvation of France... and the two young priests, whose lives are changed by the chronicles of witchcraft, the vestiges of the Inquisition and inhumane treatment of women by the Church– bringing them to moral crossroads where each must choose his or her own destiny. Influenced by the enlightened philosophers of the times, these characters uncover the bigotry of the Church, suffer religious persecution and experience the horrors of war. Background: As an Avocation, for over twenty years, the author has researched the role of women in the Early Church and the scandal of their subordination in the rise of Christianity. This resulted in his first work entitled The Priestess and the Pope. Madeleine’s Inquisition, a sequel, bolsters the already persuasive case of the leadership role of women and sets forth the injustice, superstition and the inhumanity of the Church towards women. As a decorated combat veteran, the author felt compelled to deal with the horrors and the aftermath of war in an era plagued by constant wars.

Let’s Talk.

One day, I really felt like Maine lobster— hadn’t had it in forever. We walked and walked. I can’t remember the name of the café, but it was right on the water, a funny little place. I ate an entire lobster! Jeffrey says he’s never seen me devour anything like that, with melted butter…Even now, just thinking about it, oh, God! I could die.” —Eva Marie Saint, star of Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront and Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, on visiting Perkins Cove while performing at Ogunquit Playhouse. Interview by Colin W. TALKING WALLS

A ROLLING STONE He was born in Saccarappa Village, the early name for Westbrook. By age six he’d moved to Andover. No doubt he was a dreamer: while his friends tried to land jobs in local mills, he hunted, fished, trapped, and extended his wanderings to include Rangeley, where he first experienced Mooselookmeguntic Lake. He fell in love with the stars’ reflections in the water. Then he heard the future calling. TRENDING INTO MAINE n interesting phenomenon had taken hold at the lake. Near the south end was Students Island. From the 1850s on, Yale undergrads in letter sweaters (followed by raccoon coats and ukuleles) considered it a rite of passage to bundle into trains in New Haven and flock here to rusticate. Barker crashed their campfire discussions, entertained them with his wilderness yarns, and conducted stealth marketing surveys to get at the heart of their secret cravings. Why have you come here? What are you searching for? What’s your favorite drink? Oh, and if you ever got married, would you bring your families here?

A

TO THE RAFTERS The canny Mainer worked night and day, scraped together investors, and built trendy hunting lodges and hotels (among them The Barker, Bemis, and The Birches— which he’d first opened as Students Island Camps) filled with the gritty gear his beloved travelers dreamed about. Vaulted, woodsy interiors. Canoes and paddles. Granite fireplaces and antlers. Arts and crafts furniture. Hudson Bay blankets and snowshoes. After seeking approval from the State of Maine, he exclusively operated five steamboats taking tourists across the lake to his clusters of oh-so-private smallhouse lodge communities. Engaging in letter-writing campaigns to editors across the country, he whispered about the magic being discovered here: Shh! Don’t come! In 1911, a year before L.L. Bean was founded, the New York Times took the bait: “SALMON FISHING IN MAINE. Lakes Full of Them and Big Catches Are Being Made.” TAKING US CLOSER By then, Barker’s woodsy empire was in full swing and Maine was the talk of the nation, in large part due to Barker’s natural gift for cool, clear writing—shades of Jack London and even Turgenev’s Sketches from a Hunter’s Album.

FRANÇOIS GAGNÉ

THROW ME A LINE His wilderness tales, more than a few starring himself in a new role as the “adventure hotelier,” include a vignette in which

he chases (at night, on ice skates) trespassers who’ve stolen beans, dried apples, prunes, and more supplies from one of his camps across the lake. “As I left the camp, I saw the reason why I had not seen the light from the fire from the outside. They had taken the oilcloths from the tables and hung them up, shutting off all light from the front windows.” Further down the shore, he follows their icy sled tracks to a new camp they’re robbing. He carries a lantern to see their faces. They deny the crime, but he spots his goods among their cache of weapons… BUY YOUR OWN BARKER WILDERNESS LODGE ’ve gone up to Mooselookmeguntic for over 20 years,” says listing agent John Scribner. “I believe 11 Barker Loop is all original Barker cabins. Barker owned and rented all the cabins looking west toward the sunsets from the shore of the lake.” Contemporary architect “Travis Kinney has kept their mystique but has added creature comforts—a larger kitchen, improving the foundation.” Asking price is $1.975M. As for fishing, “the Oquossoc Angling Club is right there, so you have your very serious fly fishermen. Landlocked salmon and brook trout are the trophy fish. The lake is dam-controlled. The Kennebago River runs into it.” “He was ahead of his time,” Scribner says of Barker, who considered his sites like a movie director. “His spirit is alive today in developers like Paul Coulombe of Boothbay Harbor, Tim Harrington in the Kennebunks, hotelier Jim Brady in Portland.

oesn’t say anything about what happens if someone’s standing in the portal. Maybe you can build a fence around it, just to be safe.” “Well, what about the government? I don’t want the NSA finding out about this and kicking me off the property so they can study it.” She scanned the folder. “They know.” “They know?” “They’ve been here, they’ve checked it out.” She shrugged. “They know.” “How doesn’t the whole world know about this?” “This is Maine. A lot of stuff happens here that the whole world doesn’t know about.” The man thought for a second. “How much are they asking?” “$149,000.” “You think I could get ’em down to $130K because of the whole portal thing?” “Let’s go in at $125K. I’ll get the paperwork started.” The agent closed the folder and searched for a foothold with her wedge. n

he real estate agent was wearing the wrong shoes. She stood on the muddy, craggy path in a pair of open-toed wedges. The man she was showing the property to stood looking around in appropriate footwear. He didn’t own any footwear that wouldn’t have been appropriate. “So as you can see, it’s a totally raw piece of land. There’s seven and a half acres. There’s a hundred feet of road frontage, and the back of the property abuts a nature preserve. The neighboring properties do have homes on them, but they’re set back a ways, so it’s a very private parcel.” The man stood silently. “It’s a beautiful piece of land,” he finally said. “It’s just…um, what can you tell me about this thing?” He pointed behind her at the thirty-foot-diameter silver orb that hovered silently ten feet above the ground in a clearing in the pines.

She turned around. “Oh.” She looked in her folder. “Yes, so apparently there is an interdimensional portal on the property.” “Ok…what does that mean? Does this thing come with the property?” The orb shot straight up in the air at an impossible speed. “How often does that happen?” Before the agent could answer, another object appeared suddenly and silently, this one shaped like a giant spearhead pointed up to the sky. “Another one?” The agent checked the folder again. “It says here that the seller has been hunting this property since he was a kid, and the portal has been here as long as he can remember. Sometimes he doesn’t see anything for years, and sometimes it’s one right after the other. He says right now is a busy time. He hasn’t seen it this busy since the Iran-Contra Affair.”

he spearhead shot into the air, and a second later a giant set of metal breasts appeared. They spun around incredibly fast for a second, stopped as suddenly as they had started, and disappeared. “There’s great soil here. Great to build on, and a great perc test.” “Ok, that’s great, but I’m a little concerned about this portal. Has it been tested? I mean, is there radiation or something I need to worry about? I’ve got kids. What if one of them wanders into the portal zone when one of these things appears? Does my kid explode? Does he get transported to the Andromeda Galaxy?” She checked the folder. “So they’ve had the portal tested, and there are no toxic fumes, chemicals, or radiation associated with the portal.” A giant metal acorn appeared, spun around, then shot upwards.
