Dark & Steamy

J

anwillem van de Wetering was the first to tell me, “Your picture never changes in the magazine.” Okay, so that’s when I shaved off my mustache and went with the maroon sweater. Here’s an update to kick off the New Year. I’m sipping a “Dark & Steamy” to celebrate the 39th year of our publishing Portland Monthly magazine—and the publication by HellBound Books (Austin, TX) of my novel Flying Dark. What’s the story? If you read it, I suspect you’ll never feel the same about transatlantic aviator Charles Lindbergh, once a looming hero in our family. Few of us knew that Lindbergh and his wife, author Anne Morrow Lindbergh, were annual summer visitors to North Haven Island, where they kept a secret airstrip at their windswept oceanfront cottage. Charles and Anne even spent their honeymoon there while the world’s reporters and paparazzi chased after them. As always, Maine proved to be the perfect getaway. Follow this link to our 2016 feature about the Lindberghs’ downeast sanctuary to share my inspiration for Flying Dark: portlandmonthly. com/portmag/2015/12/homes-for-the-high-flyers/ Those walls are still talking! When their house came up for sale, I caught a ferry to the island to tour it. Just as I approached, a lone eagle swept down and whispered to me, “There’s more to this than meets the eye.” One revelation led to another. After years of research, the POV of Lindbergh’s potentially surviving son (whose 1932 kidnapping was dubbed the Crime of the Century) materialized as the best way to deploy many newly uncovered facts about the astronomically gifted couple that go beyond garden-variety horrific. The private fathoms of their lives haunt me. Why dark and steamy? I thought I’d written a literary novel, but when I pulled it out of the water, it was a horror romance. Or is it a noir thriller? I hope you’ll be the judge and let me know. And to you, Janwillem, wherever in the universe you are, it’s back to the picture with the maroon sweater.

One day, I really felt like Maine lobster— hadn’t had it in forever. We walked and walked. I can’t remember the name of the café, but it was right on the water, a funny little place. I ate an entire lobster! Jeffrey says he’s never seen me devour anything like that, with melted butter…Even now, just thinking about it, oh, God! I could die.”

MISSING YOU Thank you so much, Jean, for sharing him [Dan Fogelberg, “Wild Child,” April 2010] with us. I must ask, are you planning on publishing your love story in a book? I enjoyed reading what you shared, and cried at the end. Dan is one of the few artists I am still enjoying listening to fifty years later. Pine Tree Pillage A recent study shows that Vikings maintained a regular timber trade route between Greenland and North America beginning around 985 CE, roughly 500 years before Columbus. Through cellular analysis of wooden relics, scientists concluded that Vikings had access to timber that, at the time, could not have come from Greenland or Europe. One tree species in question: the jack pine, which, 1,000 years ago, could only be found in its native habitat, now known as northern New England (read: Maine).

PERFORMERS

Rise Meet the next generation of Portland musicians to keep an eye on this winter. BY S A M P F E I F L E

Angelikah Fahray starred in the Made in Maine Music Series. Stay tuned for 2024 dates.

BRIAN DELGADO

A

s was clear to anyone who attended the packed 21st annual Beatles Night shows at the State Theatre recently, Portland has no shortage of veteran musicians. More than twenty guitarists, horn players, drummers, and string players filled out Spencer and the Walrus. Many of them are of the generation that started playing Portland in the halcyon days of the late ’90s and early 2000s, when it seemed like every door in the Old Port and on Congress Street opened into a live music venue. Those days are, of course, long gone, but Portland is still blessed with a better selection of live music and recording artists than just about any other city of its size in

the United States. It also remains an incubator of great young talent that may be destined for bigger and better things—just like Amy Allen, Lady Lamb, Ray LaMontagne, Kalie Shorr, and Genevieve Stokes. Heck, even Slaid Cleaves got his start in Portland. He still writes a mean song, too, even if he now calls Austin, Texas, home.

Fahray croons at the mic one minute & steps back to rip on the electric guitar the next. If you’re looking for the next big thing to emerge from our fair little city, here are three sure bets.

ANGELIKAH FAHRAY Fahray’s most recent single was the sultry “In My Coffin.” Next up? “If I Would Die.” What’s going on with the morbid imagery from Portland’s hottest young R&B and jazz singer? “It’s funny,” she says. “I’ve been trying to figure that out. Maybe it’s me presenting myself to the world and letting them know I’m killing off an old version of myself, and whatever they’ve seen so far, tahey should not expect that forever.” You’d be forgiven, though, if you like what you’ve seen so far. Similar to a young Janelle Monáe, Fahray is hard to pin down, crooning at the mic one minute and stepping back to rip on the electric guitar the next, delving into bop-style jazz from the ’50s on one song before launching into beat-oriented dance music with W I N T E R G U I D E 2 02 4 23

RIGOMETRICS It may be a bit unfair to label Rigometrics “up-and-coming,” given that the theatrical-rock three-piece is already selling out venues from Portland to South Thomaston, as they did with their recent “Rigsgiving” shows. In fact, says vocalist and keyboardist Keenan Hendricks, there’s a “solid chance we release something from [those shows], seeing how well they went.” Let’s hope so. Notwithstanding their current success, it’s clear this trio of recent college grads is just getting started. Their 2022 full-length album debut, Rig N’ Roll, was a delight, leveraging Hen-

collaborator DJ Matt Perry. As Fahray plans her next big in-person production, make sure to check out the live-recorded concert video she produced as part of her Sonic Visions Fund grant through SPACE Gallery last December and just released for public consumption. program just a couple of years back before heading off to Nashville for music school. Soon afterwards, though, she found herself pining for the Pine Tree State and penned “Casco Bay,” a slice of pure singer-songwriter nostalgia. “[It] tells a story of a move back to my hometown,” Hinitt says, “and all the spiraling emotions that came along with that… a home that no longer felt like it did growing up as a kid.” Apparently, she’s not alone in

that kind of sentiment. The track, which features a pro polish from producer Ryan Ordway at The Studio Portland, has been a local radio favorite and is racking up thousands of spins online. Now that she’s back and firmly ensconced in Portland, Hinitt is looking to get out and play as much as possible this winter, hoping to develop songs that resonate with her hometown community. It shouldn’t be too hard—her lilting voice is the kind that draws people in. n Antoinette Hinitt released a music video with her latest single, “Silver Linings.”

dricks’s musical theater background to produce soaring and sometimes operatic tunes that call to mind the best of ’70s glam—Elton John, David Bowie, even a bit of Black Sabbath. With Josef Berger supplying bang-up guitar solos and Derek Haney keeping an athletic beat on the drums, they notably eschew a bass but still manage to deliver a rock-and-roll drive that seems harder and harder to come by these days.

the 35th floor at 4 Longfellow Place in Boston, made big headlines as the lawyer who represented fraudster “Clark Rockefeller,” aka Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter. The lurid details were hooked up to a

TA L K I N G WA L L S cultural boom box when Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) played Gerhartsreiter in the 2010 movie Who Is Clark Rockefeller? At the time, the idea of an imposter Rockefeller touched a nerve among Mainers who insist they’re too down-to-earth ever to have their heads turned by celebrity summer Mainers such as real Rockefellers, viz the late David or Peggy. Or luminaries like Martha Stewart, who’s not unfamiliar with the criminal justice system. Whatever floats your Picnic Boat. THE HOUSE THAT “CLARK ROCKEFELLER” BUILT? What trial lawyer under high

pressure and media scrutiny wouldn’t want to escape to Maine for a little R & R in the wild? It’s hard to take in these dreamy layouts without thinking of the remote fishing lodge in Canada where Denny Crane (played by William Shatner) took fellow attorney and pal Alan Shore (played by James Spader) in the “Finding Nimmo” episode of Boston Legal. Sure, legendary lawyer Denny Crane is a totally fictional character invented by writer/producer David E. Kelley, a Mainer. But truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. Example: Does Denny’s lodge on Nimmo Bay, Canada, have antler drawer pulls like these?

How absurd to display a trophy you didn’t earn.” Shatner: “Well, you’ve gotta have a moose.” Total all the receipts, this place is drop-dead gorgeous: cathedral ceilings, bewitching sightlines, two-story stone fireplace, the works. There are so many breathtaking vignettes—yes, one of which includes a moose head big enough to make L.L. Bean stop and look.

He said the actual amount is much less. “Greenberg said this is a debt that Denner has been working to pay down for years. Sprague had the cottage moved to a temporary lot in Cape Elizabeth, where it now sits. “The history of the cottage, the documentation of that history, and its connection to John Calvin Stevens really impressed upon me the importance of the house and [led to] my interest in trying to give it a second lease on life.”

t’s not every day you get the chance to buy a sub-$100,000 home designed by Portland’s late 19th- and early 20th-century superstar architect John Calvin Stevens. Or redesigned, at least. The catch? You’ll have to move it. The summer cottage once sat in a prime location just feet from the ocean. On those long summer days, sun-dappled waves washed against the nearby shore, with Scarborough Beach not far across a stretch of open water. When the previous owner

decided to build a year-round house, the cottage faced demolition. “We had… to choose whether or not we were going to try and save it without

HANDWRITTEN HISTORY Initial construction of the two-bedroom, two-bathroom 1,750-squarefoot cottage began on Tuesday, June 23, 1891, as a handwritten notation by the original builder attests on an extant two-by-four. Sprague estimates that a prospective buyer should be prepared for a budget “only slightly less than the cost of new construction.” He still hopes the house will be able to start a new chapter, though. “It’s such a cool piece of Cape Elizabeth history.”

prague is no stranger to some of those more fascinating aspects of Cape Elizabeth’s past. He and his family live in the birthplace and first home of legendary Hollywood director John Ford (born John Feeney), and anyone familiar with the area will recognize the Sprague name. The Sprague Corporation has operated in Cape Elizabeth since 1920 and has over 2,000 acres in holdings. Shettleworth agrees that the Pierce Cottage could be a worthwhile investment. “The right individual or family could take on this project and not only save a piece of John Calvin Stevens’s work but also have the pleasure of [living in] this really delightful example of his late architectural style.” At this point, the future of the cottage remains uncertain. “The price [listed at $60,000 OBO] is negotiable,” Sprague says. “I would really like to see the house preserved more than anything.” n

What’s your favorite room in the house? ou can’t help but love the great room of this home. It has abundant natural light with a singular view of the ocean. The original mantel, a statement piece in the main gathering room, looks as if it comes with all the memories of the house dating back to the 1860s. What’s the view like? As you look out, you see the sparkling blue ocean stretching out before you. Colorful boats bob gently

in the harbor. Seagulls soar in the sky. It’s a scene that fills your heart with tranquility and a sense of awe. Does the house have any exciting features? Keeping the original mismatched wood floors tells a story and continues to give the home so much charm. While many updates have been made since 2018, the character of this striking red house remains the same, with touches of history throughout. What’s the history of the house? In the mid-1800s, the building was originally a general store in a booming sardine factory/sawmill town. Now focused on commercial lobster fishing, Jonesport is con-

tinuing to expand, and, being in the hub of the town, this space could easily be converted back into a commercial property! Any stories about the house? The current owner’s an artist who first touched down in Maine in 2010. He painted Off the Reach from memories of his visit. When he purchased 4 Moosabec in 2018 and moved in, he looked out the window of the great room and realized it was the exact view he’d recreated years before. He chose to hang the piece above the mantel with his desk facing the matching view so he was surrounded by Off the Reach. n WINTERGUIDE 2024 47

What’s the history of the house? Steve: The previous owner was the head of the bricklayers association [the International Union of Bricklayers’ and Allied Craftworkers], so he ran a very complicated profession from this outer island, all while sitting in that beautiful office looking into the harbor. Per: My parents had a house directly across the street. The owner of the house for many years, Jack Joyce, was a friend of the family, though mostly my father. I believe he was president of the masonry union, the bricklayers’ union. What’s your favorite room in the house? Steve: The office in the lower building. It has three sides of windows looking right out into the harbor, so it’s a fantastic place to work. Describe the view Steve: [You’re] looking out at one of the most picturesque harbors on the East Coast, with working lobster 48 PORTLAND MAGAZINE

boats and schooners arriving in the summertime. Burnt Coat Harbor is very protected, even though it’s on an outer island. Exciting features? Steve: This house is actually two houses split where the upper house is. The residence in the lower house is an office. It can be reversed as well. Per: It’s right on the waterfront, but hidden. The property is two little houses, very quirky little houses. They’re kind of personal, unique expressions of what [the owner] wanted. There are lots of houses like this in Maine where people find a house and do their own thing with it. Another interesting thing is that the house is not visible from the road, which is kind of unusual for a place like Swan’s Island, especially right on the harbor. It has a unique privacy. You go down the road, and you’re in this kind of new, funny place where it’s like you’re not in a town all of a sudden. But then you drive back up the driveway, and you’re in a town again. It’s very quiet that way.

The potential for this property is to build a dock or boat house, not necessarily for commercial use, but you can be more on the waterfront than on other properties, because there are usually a lot of restrictions. It has one level for grilling, one level the kids like to do crafts on, and, of course, the best level is right off the bedroom, where my wife and I enjoy our morning coffees as the sun rises. Take us closer. It has ocean views without being on the water. It’s set back at an angle that leads with an amazing view at a fraction of an oceanfront price. At 168 pandemic, my wife and I yearned to get away from the city and be near water with the kids. On a whim, I searched for an affordable home with a water view to rent for a few days. As it was the middle of the summer, options were slim, but I saw this place up in Lubec, Maine. Nervous that I’d lose the rental, I booked it immediately! Traveling from Boston, we found ourselves in Lubec in a VRBO rental house six hours later. We had the best family trip of our life. We loved how secluded and beautiful it was. While walking to the beach, we saw that the house [next to] our rental was for sale! A few months later, we made an offer on that neighboring house—the one we have listed! Is there something about Lubec? What makes Lubec really special is that it truly has the full outdoor package: beaches, three lighthouses, and beautiful hikes for all skill levels. It’s our happy place. Although my family’s size has led us to a different home in the area, 46 South Lubec will always hold a special spot in our pictures and memories. n

square feet, it’s the smallest property I’ve ever put on the market. And as a rental, it could bring in $16-19K a year.” True to tiny-house standards, it’s compact. A couch downstairs can sleep two guests, there’s a small bathroom off the kitchen, and a ladder leads to a sleeping loft. Large windows on both levels offer views of the marsh and plenty of light throughout the cottage. “My favorite room in the house is the kitchen,” says Bayley of the small but charming space walled with knotty pine reminiscent of Mad Men. “It’s adorable, and everything is within reach.” She adds that the location offers more than Pine Point Beach. “There’s a community here. There’s a fire pit in the middle of the nine cottages near the larger structure that was once the hotel.” Built in 1948, the hotel offered the middle class a place to rest and play along the still growing coast of Maine. “Pine Point has changed a lot in recent years. Now there’s four or five restaurants within walking distance, as well as a tavern. And the beach is just down a path across the street, literally three minutes. It’s perfect!”n WINTERGUIDE 2024 49

Dodd is taking her plein air perspective inside and examining the natural world through windows and doors. For most of her career, she has divided her time between her homes in Cushing; Manhattan; and Blairstown, New Jersey. Congratulations on the exhibit, Lois. How

many solo exhibits does this make now? I’ve been told it’s over 70, with eighteen at the Alexandre Gallery. There are 28 new panels in this show. All done from inside, but still plein air? Yes, still plein air. I spend much time

in my barn looking out, or I paint from my second-floor window in Blairstown. Painting outdoors has changed for me, especially in the winter. And now there are so many ticks in the summer. I’d rather be painting in my barn in Cushing. It seems as though your recent work is taking a magnifying glass to nature, such as Seed Cone, Oak Leaf, and Birch Bark. They still display your fascination with the geometry of nature, but you’re zooming in on its tiniest wonders. I’m not intentionally magnifying nature. I’m still just painting what I see. I think of these paintings as my still lifes. Instead of bottles and fruit, I’m painting small bits of nature that W I N T E R G U I D E 2 0 2 4 51

I find and bring inside. What are your routines? I don’t have any set routines. I guess you’d say I’m routine-less, sort of free-form. I may gesso some panels in the morning and then spend time just looking around, deciding what I want to paint later. Every day is different. Do you already have an idea about the size of the panel when you start? The sizes and the panels vary quite a lot, so I like to have different ones available. If I want to paint something larger than 20 inches, I need to use linen. It’s lighter and more manageable. I prefer Masonite, but it’s tough to get that now. If I don’t have the right size in the Masonite, I’ll go with plywood. As a plein air artist, you’re up against all kinds of unpredictable conditions. ver the past year, adult-use cannabis sales in Maine have continued to rise. In 2022, data from the Office of Cannabis Policy showed $27,439,717 in the “infused product” category, which “includes drinks, edibles, capsules, suppositories, topical,” not just edibles. Here’s something to sink your teeth into: as of November 2023, we’ve already seen an increase of approximately $3.85 million earned from edibles compared to last year. That’s $31,289,715 before

December. Hungry for more? For bread, to get the best bake, you need to wait for the dough to double in size. That’s just what Maine’s cannabis industry has done. From 2021 to 2023, total revenue from cannabis sales has increased more than twofold, rising from $81,963,009 to $197,561,133. Even with December yet to be counted, the almost $200M in total sales for 2023 is already well ahead of the $158,904,376 in sales recorded in 2022. Month-to-month, adult-

use retail sales decreased from $19,002,266 in October to $17,635,649 in November. In baker’s terms, Maine was punching down before the second rising. The kind of bread we’re craving should bounce back when pressed, if we trust the rising trend of Maine’s cannabis industry over the past three years. What else is Maine cooking up? s Melissa and Ray prepared for their wedding in adjacent suites at the Portland Regency Hotel, they pulled back corners of curtains to see if the clouds might disperse. No such luck. For one guest in particular, rain might prove disastrous. Drops pelted cobblestone streets, leaving a soft sheen of silt and mud. The car conveying that critical visitor came to a stop out front, and there she was, held aloft over the cobblestones’ dirt and grime: the couple’s five-month-old golden retriever, Summer. A pet sitter “carried the puppy from the house to the car and then from the car to the hotel so she didn’t get wet paws and jump on the bride’s dress before the ceremony,” says wedding photographer Brittany Bugaj of Two Adventurous Souls, who captured the perfect moment when

clean dog met pristine dress. The resultant photos serve as a testament not just to the couples’ momentous day, but to the series of pet-related crises averted. PUPS GALORE Bugaj, who has been a wedding photographer for over fifteen years, says the number of people including pets in their weddings has “definitely increased in the past couple years. It started to pick up before COVID,” she says, “and now a lot of venues are more understanding of how important pets are for people’s weddings.” Two Adventurous Souls maintains a long list of pet-friendly venues on its website, “and those are just the [ones] we’ve worked with!” Recent statistics bolster Bugaj’s sense of the trend. Seeing pets at weddings seems to have become almost commonplace; a recent survey WINTERGUIDE 2024 59

WEDDING GUIDE

WEDDINGS by OnePoll found that 60 percent of respondents knew someone who had included a dog in their wedding, and 93 percent agreed with the idea that since dogs are a part of the family, they should be included in weddings.

he same poll found that ring bearer is the most popular wedding role for pups, like schnauzer Klaus in Jorge and Josiah’s wedding at The Lost Fire in Kennebunkport, photographed by Bugaj. “The couple had [Klaus] for a long time together before their wedding,” says Bugaj. People often include dogs in their weddings, she says, because “their dogs have played a vital role in their relationship.” As a photographer, she especially appreciates how pets can put people at ease for photos. “It helps get really relaxed pictures of couples enjoying their day.” As the OnePoll survey and Bugaj’s comments suggest, dogs seem to be clear winners of the most popular wedding pet award, though Bugaj has photographed engagement sessions with cats and has heard of couples cantering in on horseback to their weddings. “THEY THINK THEY’RE GOING FOR A WALK.” While including a pet in the highly orchestrated commotion of a wedding might seem like it would prove challenging for a photographer, Bugaj says, “I’m already working with the wedding party, so adding a dog doesn’t really make it more difficult. It’s already maximum chaos.” That sense of humor is vital to handling the unplanned moments that inevitably arise, like inopportune bathroom breaks, muddy paws, or delightfully oblivious pups who couldn’t care less that they’re center stage. Plus, Bugaj adds, “I can do a high-pitched whistle between my teeth to get the dogs’ attention.” n

Let’s Talk.

We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town. We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last."

the Manhattan Association of Cabarets Award for Female Stand-up Comedian, will be cracking us up with her trademark silliness and irreverent personae at the State Theatre on February 4, 2024. She has nearly twenty years of experience in a business where women make up less than 30 percent of comics. Still, Kirson has managed to rack up some serious cred with a Comedy Central special produced by Bill Burr in 2019 called Talking to Myself, guest appearances on most of the late-night talk shows, an album with Rachel Feinstein called The Call Girls, and as a producer/consultant/writer for Robert De Niro’s film The Comedian.

Her act is sometimes described as “dark humor,” and her subjects include her sobriety, her Jewish upbringing, and her lesbian identity. If she turns her back to you, she’s not being rude, just having an out-loud conversation with herself. It’s part of her act, a schtick she uses when she thinks a joke might have bombed. But pay attention. That’s when she’s giving the audience some of her best gems. If you manage to score a ticket to the show, don’t even think about heckling Kirson. She’s exchanged insults with the best and has no problem bringing her comedic chops down on those who dare. Good luck with that! Tickets are available for the all-ages show through statetheatreportland.com. n

NOTIFICATIONS Our daily struggle with digital over-stimulation is continuous and real. With emails, pop-up ads, and notifications, we are often in sensory overload. Reading a print publication is a focused experience outside of the digital realm. Printed content has tested better with brand recall than digital, and is easier on the eyes. Bottom line: printed publications provide readers with a meaningful and memorable experience. Cummings Printing is a third-generation family-owned company specializing in printing high-quality, shortrun publications. At each phase of the print process, they provide a human-touch that is unmatched by the competition. We help you create compelling publications so your readers truly understand the allure of the printed word. cummingsprinting.com

ORK HARBOR INN isn’t

just another grand hotel with water views of coastal Maine; it’s an all-in-one venue, a feast for the eyes and the soul. Charming woodwork, massive exposed beams, and a monumental stone fireplace provide a backdrop for live music. Its beating heart is the Cabin Room, once a sail loft on the Isles of Shoals 10 miles out before it was taken apart and barged back to the mainland by early settlers. Wow! History is a romantic dining partner. We start downstairs in the Ship’s Cellar Pub, which also has a fireplace, sumptuously decorated like a racing yacht (I thought of Shamrock V). We tack into the Artichoke Dip: “artichoke hearts, cream cheese, chardonnay, and red peppers served with warm baguette” ($15.95). Why not try the Mexican Coffee (with Tia Maria); Tiger Maple (“Bulleit Bourbon,

Orange Marmalade, Lemon, Maine Maple Syrup, Fresh Rosemary,” $14); and the Ship’s Cellar Swizzle ($12, starring Goslings Rum). Great meals sail diners through both the past and the future. HIGHER GROUND In the stately suite of dining rooms on the main level, we enjoy views of York Harbor Beach and the York Harbor Reading Room as we dine on Lobster Flat Bread “with Maine lobster, chives, our threecheese blend, and lobster sauce” ($23.95). Next up is the inventive

Lobster Stuffed Chicken, which is “chicken breast with Maine lobster meat and sherry-cracker stuffing under a rich Boursin cheese sauce” ($38.95). A special tonight is the Veal Harbor Inn ($32.95): “tender, milk-fed veal scaloppini lightly breaded and sauteed, topped with Maine lobster meat, roasted aspara-

The festive ruby red Valle Reale Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Italy, ($12) pairs well with everything we’ve ordered. Does an unforgettable experience get even better in front of a flickering fireplace? Guitarist Don Severance shifts into a new tune so smooth it feels like we requested it. Blueberry pie à la mode almost orders itself, like automatic writing, because this place enchants. Congratulations, Chef Jermain Henry! We’re counting the days till our return. n

Aviator Charles Lindbergh’s aw-shucks schtick is a mask for a monster who destroys strangers and loved ones with equal indifference. Hunter makes a fortune exposing fraudsters. When he stumbles across the corpse of his German teacher on his old reformatory grounds, he’s certain he is onto something evil and becomes drawn into the mystery. Unsure who his own father is, Hunter is no angel himself. A former “black ops” military officer, he knows what he has to do to get the job done, no matter the cost. Nightmares, hallucinations, and fragments of grisly memories knock on the door of his subconscious. Even the stage prop “Old Sparky” in his new lover’s lurid Grand Guignol connects a deadly circuit in Hunter. Orisa cards warn of air disaster. Brainy Pia offers a path out of his disintegration. Traveling the globe—Paris, Berlin, Geneva, and London—Hunter can’t resist the magnetic scene south of New York where the Crime of the Century once played out. Hunter is falling through the universe’s trap door. He’s headed for hell—unless he can redeem himself with one final flight.

done, I packed up and started driving down the road. All of a sudden, a truck was behind me, beeping his horn frantically, so I pulled over. It was a scary situation. I had no idea what he wanted. After I’d stopped, he came up to my car, really angry, and asked what I was doing near his fence. I told him I was just painting. He didn’t expect that answer, and I think it confused him a little. He’d assumed I was trying to steal his turkeys.

Did he give you a turkey, at least? [Laughing] No, he did not! Do you consider yourself to be a Maine artist, since you spend about half the year here? I prefer to call myself an American artist, since I regularly paint in a few places. But you’re right—Maine has been a big part of my painting life. Do you have a favorite restaurant that you frequent when you’re in the Portland area I rarely get into Portland. My house in Cushing is closer to Rockland. I like to go there for sushi at Suzuki’s. It’s really very good, and I love good sushi. Will there be an opening reception for your show at the Alexandre? Yes. It’ll be on Saturday, January 20, 2-4 p.m. I’m looking forward to being back in Manhattan for a brief visit. I still have my loft there on East Second. n

Snow like Silence

he clock said it was 4:33 a.m., time to work. Marilena Alcántara pressed the lipstick against her lips. She peeked out the window, and the snow was falling like ashes in the sky. It almost reminded her of home. She scoured her dresser and grabbed a glass perfume bottle. The edges of the crystal poked her palm. The smell of luxury, sophistication, and out-of-your-league swelled in the peaches, roses, and citrus leaves of the perfume. She enjoyed the feeling of being watched, and she caught herself staring into the mirror almost as if she were not familiar with her own reflection. There, she’d practice words hard to pronounce: lazy vs. Lacy, queen vs. Quinn, words that her native Spanish mouth struggled with. She wished she could get rid of that funky accent, but it was what made Marilena, Marilena. Outside the window, the street lamps were the moons of Neptune blurred in the snow. She’d walked that walk a thousand times and was tempted to jump in her car but decided to make those steps count. She hopped onto three inches of snow on the sidewalk. Her Bean boots served her well. She arranged the hood of her coat in a way that didn’t spoil her hair and headed east to Pine Street. It wasn’t until she crossed Clark Street that she noticed other steps behind her. She saw the headlights 112 P O R T L A N D M A G A Z I N E

of a car in the distance and heard the rumble of the plow. She stopped. The steps behind her stopped too. She didn’t have the courage to turn around, not yet. She took a deep breath of that familiar Portland air that smelled like the sea and continued on her way. But so did the steps. Marilena increased the pace. Her pulse throbbed in her neck. Detour on Brackett, left on Spring, up the hill on Winter, and then back on Pine again. But the steps followed her like her own shadow. She took her phone out of her pocket, hoping to call 911 or anybody really, but her trembling hands would only make matters worse. Suddenly, the brick building on High Street that was her destination was in sight: parked cars, storefronts, tree lights, but not a single soul. She regretted loving being followed. She regretted her fame, if you could call it that. She swore to delete her Instagram and take it easy. But social media was what made Marilena, Marilena. It was only a matter of reaching the entrance. She felt a tug on her purse and muffled a scream. She spun around and couldn’t believe her eyes. There was only the silence of the falling snow. “You think the 5 a.m. News Hour will just host itself?” Garrett, her producer, said. “You gotta take your job more seriously, Marilena. It would be a shame to miss out on this great opportunity…”

He’d promised her a prime-time slot three years ago. But when he didn’t get what he really wanted in return, he threatened to stop renewing her work visa. During the first commercial break, Marilena dug in her purse for another round of lipstick but found something different. She pulled the mic from her shirt and banged it against the desk. Garrett intercepted her before the elevator. “Where ya think you’re going?” “Out of my way, pendejo!” She slapped him across the face. “I’m done with you. RENUNCIO!” And that’s how Marilena became Marilena. n
