ome working towns roll up their sidewalks this time of year.

But in Sanford, Lord’s Clam Box is still secretly practicing summer at 1465 Main Street— even in January.

The attraction is owned by the same family who launched the former Lord’s

Hiding in Maine. With Us.

“Death to the Dracu grandson!” In terror, Iordana Ceausescu of Romania disappeared in secret to Old Orchard Beach with her son while the world searched for them. She lived a buried life among us for five years. Drawn from 800 hours of unique interviews with Iordana. Colin W. Sargent’s Red Hands—“an astounding account of the Romanian revolution in the voice of Ceausescu’s daughter-in-law.” –Martin Goodman in the Morning Star

“Brilliant. If the novel is Macbeth then it is Romeo and Juliet too, for the pounding heart of the book is a great love story that never fails to move. A tale from last century and a warning for this one, Red Hands is a novel of rare power that teaches us much about Romania and even more about ourselves.” –D. D. Johnston

“We were driving the coast, so to speak, I think maybe in a station wagon. He fell in love with wherever we went, and now he’d fallen in love with Maine. We talked excitedly in the car. We were looking for a house on the water. We did examine the place! We kept driving north along the water until I don’t really remember the name of the town.

We went quite a ways up, actually, because it was so beautiful. To John, each place was more beautiful than the last." —Interview with Yoko Ono by Colin W. Sargent,

Harborside Restaurant at the end of Harbor Road in Wells (now Hobbs Harborside) during the year of the first Moon landing. Lord’s relocated to this smaller, retro location in 2014.

Lord’s wins raves for its lobster stew and excels in many fried-food categories. Tonight, we order a combo featuring jumbo coconut shrimp with mango sauce and fried oysters ($21.99). We’re talking real jumbos, perfectly cooked. When I dip a coconut shrimp into the mango sauce and take a bite, it rockets up to No. 1 on my list. The fried oysters too are crunchy, creamy, and delicious.

Thirsty? Local draft beers here include Allagash North Sky stout, and Lone Pine’s Brightside IPA and Time and Temp lager. There’s also wine by the glass.

Usually a walk-on, this slaw wins a Best Supporting Oscar.

Why not blend the sensation with a Fisherman’s Platter—fried clams, fried scallops, fried baby Maine shrimp, and fried haddock ($23.99)? We try this with great success.

Of course, both plates come with tasty, satisfying french fries and include Lord’s signature pineapple coleslaw. Usually a walk-on, this slaw wins a Best Supporting Oscar. The tangy kick goes perfectly with fish.

This is a pretty stop—great parking, entertaining all around. Make your feast a take-out (in its matching clam boxes) and polish it off waterside at Sanford’s downtown park with picnic tables and views of skaters on the Mousam River. n
