LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE: “Circle Swimming is necessity when more than two people are in a lane. Lane lines divide lap lanes, Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway lap lanes may become crowded, at these times “circle swimming’ is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmers’ speed; slow, medium & fast. Look at the yellow markers and the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane. LAP SWIM (Lap Pool): We will make every attempt to have 1-2 lap lanes available, at all times, for adult lap swimmers. Up to 4 lanes will be available at designated times, call 503-823-3450 for complete schedule of lap lanes available during operating hours.

Water Fitness Water Workouts: Exercising in the water cushions the impact, reducing stress on the joints while supporting the muscles & promoting more efficient toning. Twelve times more resistant than air, water allows triple strength gains over land aerobics! In addition, heart rates are lower in the water, allowing for optimal fat burning & less fatigue. Check out our shallow or deep-water classes & enjoy the benefits!

Aquaerobics (Shallow)

Aquapower (Deep)

Portland Parks & Recreation The East Portland Community Center educational preschool program is based on the philosophy that children develop & grow at their own rate. In order to grow & develop their senses a child must “play by exploring & manipulating their environment. To enhance this experience, the classroom is set up in learning centers that enable children to explore different areas of development such as fine motor, socialization, pre-math, pre-reading & listening skills. Preschool for your child is the foundation for academic learning. The East Portland Community Center Preschool Program follows the traditional school schedule with children enrolled September through May.

2½-3 year olds (2½ by Sept 1st)

Tu, Th classes 1:30-3pm $90/month

Once registered, it is assumed your child will remain with the program for the entire school year.

3-4 year olds (3 by Sept 1st)

Portland Parks & Recreation Sports Classes for Parent/Child Although we register only the child, parent or caregiver participation is essential in these classes. The Parent/Child sequence of classes have been developed with your child’s best interest in mind. Balls, Balls, Bonanza helps introduce your child to the world of physical development in a low-structure, colorful, varied program, utilizing all types of balls, games & sports. This class gathers together to stretch& take roll call. Participants are then encouraged to participate in stations designed to strengthen, develop & encourage positive attitude & outlook on exercise, movement & play. Some children repeat this class several times. Games, Games, Games offers activities that are more structured than the “Balls class, but with easier directions & rules than team sports. The child’s listening & communication skills take on more importance in this class. Super Sports Time is an excellent “next class for those young children who have taken the Ball! Balls! Bonanza class & are ready to apply those ball handling skills to specific sports. Listening & communication skills contribute to a successful experience. Soccer First Timers, Baseball Lil’ Batters & Basketball for Little Hoopers offer a more structured focus for the young athlete, with emphasis placed on proper sports fundamentals, conditioning, teamwork & sportsmanship. Laurelhurst Studio Dance Program for Children The Laurelhurst Dance program affords a variety of choices to introduce dance to children starting from 1yr. & up. For the youngest ages, we have parent & child classes where adult involvement is essential to the class. The discovery of music, rhythm & movement in a shared experience enhances the bond between parent & child. Toddlers can work on their balance & coordination with Baby Boogie, 1-3yrs., Tumble, Twirl, Turn & Twist, 1½-3yrs., Tumble Bugs, 2-5yrs., Head over Heels Gymnastics, 3-5yrs., Gymnastics-Preschool Star Power, 4-6yrs., Tumbling KinderGym, 4-6yrs. or explore music & fantasy with Toddle Time, 1½-3yrs., Dancing Prince & Princesses, 2-3yrs., Dance-Movement & Me, 2-5yrs., or Fairy Tale Theatre, 4-6yrs. Children ages 3-5yrs. benefit from an introduction to the dance curriculum with classes like Terrific Twirling Threes & Fours or Ballet, Jazz & Tap Fundamentals, 3-5yrs. which explores several forms of movement such as tap, ballet, jazz or hip hop. These classes ready each child for other areas of learning such as academics & sports. A child may repeat our classes as new concepts & materials will continue to be introduced. Also, Pre-Ballet-Where Dreams Begin for ages 3-5yrs. or 4-5yrs., Tap Dance-Tiny Tappers or Dance-Tiny Hip Hoppers, 4-6yrs., may be added at this point. We also offer classes in some of these dance forms for children ages 7yrs & up who want to continue training as well as older beginning dancers. For those wanting to explore more than one type of activity, we have combination classes such as Ballet, Jazz & Tap Fundamentals for Older Kids, 6-10yrs. Each class & level explores new material & continues with exercises to establish the strengths & skills evident in posture, alignment, coordination & initiative. At age 8 years, children are eligible to join the studio’s Youth Ballet Training Program with Jojo Hills & Mara Cogswell. See that section for more detailed information.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required.

Beginning Classes

Portland Parks & Recreation Aikido Yoshokai Aikido, a form of Japanese Budo, is a path to self improvement based on martial art techniques. The goal of our study is not to defeat or control others, but to defeat and control our own egos. Students work as partners to study dynamic throws and powerful pins. It may look like they are fighting, but they are actually learning how to fit together and create harmony instead of conflict. We study harmony in Aikido so that we may learn to live in harmony with nature and the world. Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes. No jewelry. Uniforms required only for testing. Testing & Promotions: Testing fees start at $5, testing & promotion is not a requirement of the program. At time of first test, students join the National Association (Adults $35/year, Youth $20/year). There are no tournaments or competitions. New Students are accepted throughout the term. Fees are prorated for new students who begin mid-term. Sunday Class: enter the building through the pool entrance on the playground side of the center. Please knock on the door.
