Portland Parks & Recreation Nighttime Hoots and Howls

Nature of the Northwest

Meet a naturalist for an “after hours” walk during the winter solstice (December 21). Hear the chirps of birds settling in for the night, the hoots of owls as they search for prey, and other night time activity. Learn the “reasons for the seasons” and with a little luck, there may be a little stargazing as well! Learn to sharpen night vision, but bring a flashlight just in case.

Raptors!

These nighttime strolls are suitable for families, however children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Please have babies in a sling or backpack. Leave pets at home. Dress for the weather - rain or moonshine!

Want to learn about birds of prey? Take a class and get primed for raptor viewing! Find out why these birds abound during the winter in the Willamette Valley. Love the Raptor Road Trip? Do it again with your own naturalist! Grab your binoculars (or borrow some from us) and pack a lunch! We will drive to Sauvie Island to watch raptors and waterfowl. Instructor Elvira Stenson can be reached at elvira.stenson@portlandoregon.gov. Refund: 5 business days.

Children should come with the following: 1) appropriate clothing, rain gear and footwear; 2) a hat & mittens; & 3) a backpack containing a healthy, portable snack & a water bottle. Questions? Lil’ Nature Kids (Ages 3-6) Lil’ Nature Kids uses experienced, enthusiastic teachers to combine ecological concepts with developmentally appropriate skills and kindergarten readiness. Our preschool naturalists take small groups of children into a park for two hours to learn through stories, songs, art, exploration and imaginary play. The primary goal is to give children positive outdoor experiences, rain or shine, with teachers who direct the learning based the children’s interests. All classes are mixed age. Ratio of students to teachers is 4:1 or better. Children can be added for a pro-rated fee if space remains after the first day of class. #390117 Mon 9:30am-11:30am age: 3-5 Mt.
