HELLO PORTLANDERS! A message from Director Adena Long Welcome to Portland Parks & Recreation’s (PP&R) fall 2021 Recreation Center schedule and program information guide. In this guide, you will find building hours, program information, and an introduction to new ways for Portlanders to reduce cost as a barrier to participation. I want to thank Portland voters for investing in their parks system through the Parks Local Option Levy (Parks Levy). We will use these community resources to center racial equity and provide recreation programming for kids, families, and older Portlanders across the City. Though fall programming will likely look different due to COVID-19, we are excited to continue to help our community reconnect, exercise and play, and learn and grow. None of this would be possible without Portlanders’ investment in the Parks Levy. Thank you! Right now, PP&R’s primary goal is to keep our community healthy and protect the public from the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, fall programs were designed to be flexible as public health conditions change and to remain dedicated to meeting public health guidance. You will notice that some PP&R sites and programs may need to operate at reduced or restricted capacity due to COVID-19 guidelines. In addition, all programming, participant capacity limits, and locations are subject to change based on the most current public health guidance. We are hiring! PP&R is currently working to rebuild a team to restore recreation classes and activities to full capacity. Please check out our website for more information about working for PP&R. (Use the QR code below or enter Portland.gov/parks/employment in your browser). Again, thank you for your investment in your parks and recreation system. PP&R is looking forward to seeing you in your community centers! Warmly,
ADENA LONG, DIRECTOR PORTLAND PARKS & RECREATION

COMMUNITY MUSIC CENTER
How did we spend our Summer? In the Park! Each Summer we serve hundreds of youth throughout Portland with engaging drop-in music activities as part of PP&R’s Free Lunch & Play program in addition to our year-round programs for all ages at the Community Music Center and Rosewood Initiative. Also this Summer, for the first time ever, we had all our classes, ensembles, and many of our lessons occur in Kenilworth Park instead of indoors. Miraculously, we didn’t have to cancel very many days due to rain or heat!
Since class fees do not cover all costs, CMC relies on donations from individuals and organizations to fulfill its mission. You can help CMC with your tax-deductible cash donation to CMC, Inc. Call 503-823-3177 or visit us online at CommunityMusicCenter.org.

Programs run year-round, and scholarships are available. Along with our vibrant arts education program, MAC presents— and partners to bring—theatre, music, dance performances, gallery exhibitions, and other special events to the community; spaces are available to rent.
In addition to providing community arts education programming and community rentals, Multnomah Arts Center provides space to these nonprofit community service providers. Contact information is provided below as a courtesy to the public.
Founded in 1973, MAC is one of the largest comprehensive community arts education programs in the nation. A program of Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R), MAC is a model community center, sharing and maintaining space with multiple nonprofit community service providers. At the heart of MAC’s success is the all-volunteer board of Multnomah Arts Center Association (MACA), a nonprofit body founded in 1983 that supports Multnomah Arts Center. While PP&R supports the annual operation and maintenance of Multnomah Arts Center, the nonprofit MACA makes it possible to exceed expectations for a community center by raising money to provide additional scholarships, outreach, community engagement, and make facility and program improvements.

SUMMER 2021 AT MAC Summer 2021 was like no other at MAC, but still full of fun, creativity, and community. We’ve all been through a lot, and we knew we would be leaning on the tremendous power of community arts and music to heal and bring people together. • We hosted hundreds of young artists at on-site, outdoor camps, led by talented teaching artists and capable counselors at the Multnomah Arts Center campus for the first time! • We spent countless hours behind the scenes preparing to reopen our doors and return, in a new way, to offering community arts education in our facility as soon as it’s safe and feasible.
MULTNOMAH ARTS CENTER
• We seized an amazing opportunity to put the CREATE in Recreation! With support from the Multnomah Arts Center Association, and funding from the PP&R Levy (Thank you, Portland!), we were able to expand beyond the walls of the MAC facility in Southwest Portland, and partner with the amazing Summer Free for All team to provide free drop-in arts activities to kids and families at Free Lunch + Play sites in July and August.
The Summer 2021 Art and Music Pods program delivered on-site, drop-in community arts and music encounters in various parks across Portland, in conjunction with the Summer Free for All Lunch + Play nutrition program to encourage play, creativity, and music in our parks and build community. We had so much fun and learned a lot playing with you this summer, Portland! Thank you! Keep your eye on MultnomahArtsCenter.org for news and updates about all of our programs.

Check your local pool schedule for program availability and times. SOUTHWEST COMMUNITY CENTER POOL will have an extended shutdown this fall for routine replacement of the heat wheel, an air handling component that is essential to maintaining proper air quality on the pool deck. More details regarding date and timeline of the shutdown will be posted on site and on our PP&R social media pages as soon as logistics are finalized.
SWIM LESSONS Swim lessons for all ages and skill levels are available for preschoolers (3-5yrs), youth (6 yrs and up), and adults. Children under the age of three can take lessons with their parent(s) in our adult/child (Angelfish and Starfish) classes. Everyone should learn to swim to become “Water Smart” and swimming is a skill that lasts a lifetime.
COLUMBIA INDOOR POOL is closed until further notice due to life-safety hazards for building occupants. Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) understands this is disappointing news for the North Portland community.
OPEN PLAY SWIM Swimming and diving areas are open to all ages. NonSwimmers and children under 48 inches in height must have a parent or guardian, age 16 or older, in the water within arms reach at all times.
The unreinforced masonry structure is nearing the end of its useful life, and PP&R must prioritize public safety while determining the next steps for Columbia Pool. Since 2008, PP&R has worked with independent professional roofing contractors to inspect the building’s roof while also performing internal quarterly reviews. The inspections indicated, among other things, deterioration of sections of the roof, visible damage to the roof’s supporting wood structure, and life-safety hazards present in the domed roof structure over the pool. Therefore, the independent structural engineer recommends that Columbia Pool not be re-opened to the public in its current condition. PP&R will share more information with the public once the next steps for Columbia Pool are determined. If you have questions, please email pkrsst@portlandoregon.gov.

Years of research on children’s learning and development documents the many benefits of play and exploration on a child’s intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and language development. In order to grow, children must play by exploring and manipulating their environment. They learn using their senses. Play is an important avenue for learning. As children imitate what goes on around them, they begin to understand how things work and how they are used. Initially, this is a process of trial and error. However, with time and repetition, they use new information to increase their understanding of the world around them.

LADYBUG NATURE WALKS
• age 6 & under with an adult
Ladybug Nature Walks take place in Portland's parks and natural areas. They are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who want to explore in nature with a trained educator. Children attend with an adult who assists in guiding them along as they explore. Ladybug Nature Walks are a way for children ages 0-6 (and an adult) to explore a local Portland park. Nature educators guide families to notice plants and animals. Walks are child-directed and open-ended. Nature educators walk with the children in small groups. Children learn through questions, observation, and play. Groups move slowly through the park, stopping often. In this way, children have time to notice the plants and animals around them. If we have extra time we might also read a story, sing a song, or use puppets for imaginative play. Walks last one hour. Content is geared for children ages 18 months-6 years. (Younger siblings under 18 months are welcome. Please give us their names and ages when prompted during registration.) While exploring with a nature educator, children borrow a small Ladybug backpack containing a few tools that are easy to clean: • • • • • • •
Magnifying lens Small plastic tub with a lid Metal Spoon Laminated color wheel for matching Plastic Bug box Plastic paintbrush Small toy insect for imaginative play
For more information, email enviroed@portlandoregon.gov or call 503-823-1149. Upcoming walks and registration links can be found at portland.gov/parks/environmental-education/ladybug-nature-walks or by scanning the QR code.

CREATIVE ARTS Introduction to Cyanotype: Printing with Sunlight - Virtual
Cyanotype: Printing with Sunlight
Create vibrant, contrasting prints of white on cobalt blue paper backgrounds using photosensitive solutions. Cyanotyping (or “blueprinting”) is a practice that’s 180 years old. We layer objects on top of our pre-prepared paper and expose the stack of materials to sunlight. Your print will develop before your eyes, leaving impressions of your composition behind. We’ll have the opportunity to do many experiments so that you can play with different materials and exposure methods to produce different outcomes, whether that be ghostly transparencies or sharp outlines. All materials provided. Please feel FREE to bring any small objects you’d like to print with, such as lace, feathers, pressed or fresh leaves and plants, glass objects, buttons, etc. to make a unique composition. Transparent or semi-transparent objects are especially fun to experiment with! Peninsula Park Picnic Area A Instructor: Molly Donaldson Th 9/30 1:00-3:00pm $10 1140210

This optional, FREE virtual session will provide an introduction to the preparation and materials used in cyanotype printing. We’ll talk through the use of photosensitive solutions to prepare print mediums at home for later use. Cyanotypes are commonly printed on paper or cloth, but this practice can also be applied to wood, ceramics and glass. We’ll look at some examples of work to inspire us and inform our experimentations in person. This session can act as a stand-alone event if you’d like to learn more about the medium, or you can pair it with our in-person practice session. Leatherwork: Getting Started
Make two simple, hand-stitched leather items from scratch in this beginner workshop. We’ll start by creating a cardholder together, tracing and cutting leather from a pattern, using a chisel and awl, and learning basic saddle-stitching with two needles. Then, you’ll select a second project to get started on- a pouch or clutch. We will work with natural materials in this class, including leather that is “veg-tanned” by a centuries-old method that uses plant tannins and natural oils. It has a stiff structure, making it easy to sew by hand, and it will acquire a rich, natural patina over time. We’ll apply beeswax to the edges of our products and burnish them by hand to achieve a finished look. Try your hand with a variety of tools including skivers, stitch groovers, chisels, mallets, punches, and edge finishing tools to decide what suits you best. All materials provided. Suminagashi Printing on Paper Virtual
The art of Suminagashi is a monotype technique of creating marbled surface patterns that are then printed to paper or cloth. When applied with a brush, sumi ink floats on the surface of water, rippling with any vibrations or breeze that change the surface tension of the water. This movement lends an organic quality to prints. We’ll use a surfactant to strategically concentrate our ink into patterns, but there is always an element of chance and letting go of control with this medium. Each print is unique!
