The Director’s Box Dear Friends, The Little Artists Preschool is off to a great start. Our teachers have created a wonderful curriculum and the kids’ first performance was standing room only! (Page 13) LAP was the first development in the new MAC Cottages. Next up, our printmaking studio is moving out of the basement into a beautifully lit room nearly doubling in size. (Page 32) Stay tuned for the next developments. We continue to build an incredible program thanks to the support we get from you. The Multnomah Arts Center’s Annual Appeal is now upon us. Please consider donating to help us bring even more art to those who want it. Michael Walsh, Executive Director

Portland Parks & Recreation Parent & Toddler Art Classes These classes offer a process-oriented art experience. While providing instruction in the use of art materials and techniques, our teachers guide students through the creative process in an effort to elicit and encourage each child’s individual style of visual expression. Rather than simply following directions to construct prescribed art “products,” children in our classes learn to trust their own creative impulses while being supported by their parent or guardian. We recommend both adult and child wear grubbies as these classes can be messy. All materials are included. Cleanup is part of visual arts classes. Once classes are full, we cannot accept extra students.

The Printmaking Studio is Moving Up— New Space & New Name: “Trayle Studio” The Multnomah Arts Center begins an exciting new chapter with the move of its 16+ year old printmaking program from the basement studio to one of the 1000+ square foot cottages on the west end of our campus—with beautiful windows, added ventilation and space for more students! This move brings many improvements to the printmaking program including the addition of a Ray Trayle press. The new “Trayle Studio” is named after Ray Trayle, the maker of our press, and his sister, Helen—the original owner of the press. Both went to school here when it was the Multnomah School many years ago. (See the article on our website: www.MultnomahArtsCenter.org.) We will launch the new studio with a series of workshops and will offer a more extensive series of classes Spring Term 2013. It will not only serve as a printmaking space, but as a book arts studio with workshops, events and other activities that engage the community in the printed world and beyond. We will be partnering with other arts organizations and offering family/child friendly classes and workshops as well, with non-toxic techniques. Going back to the 1500s, mezzotint is a non-acid printmaking technique that is user friendly and can be worked almost anywhere. The artist works with chiaroscuro (light and dark). A copper plate is covered with a fine texture that when printed, results in rich, velvety blacks. Whites and grays are brought out with the use of special hand tools. Students will work with pre-textured plates (a demo on rocking plates will be part of the first class.) Price includes a $30 basic materials fee which is non-refundable after class begins. INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/ special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support the participant & accommodate their individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

Liberate Shakespeare!

By: Aimé Kelly, Youth and Arts Outreach Director The Multnomah Arts Center’s Theatre Arts outreach troupe, The Shakespeare Liberation Army (SLA), began their residency at Jackson Middle School on October 29, 2012. The SLA’s performance and residency, funded by the Multnomah Arts Center Association and a grant from ONI/SWNI, reached over 600 members of the Jackson Middle School community in SW Portland. The SLA brings Shakespeare alive in a way that is very accessible to all ages through an entertaining and dynamic performance. The project goal of the

SLA is to encourage a greater understanding and appreciation for theatre, specifically Shakespeare, in both seasoned and novice audience members. The adaptation has been developed to capture the spirit of the text, while making the archaic language accessible. The result is a concise interpretation of the work’s artistic merits and significance. Following the performance, MAC teaching artists, Timothy Scarrott and Aimé Kelly, offer nine hours of classroom instruction. This classroom instruction will cover the plot points of Macbeth, the rich history of the Elizabethan stage, basic acting skills and the relevance of language in the theatre. Students will begin to learn to decipher Shakespearean language on their own and expand their interpretation, literacy skills and also improve their understanding that the messages of Shakespeare are cultural key stones. Their involvement will hopefully stimulate a lifelong interest in theatre while increasing engagement and performance in school. If you’d like to learn more about MAC’s Shakespeare Liberation Army contact Aimé Kelly, Youth Arts & Outreach Director - 503-823-2787. Register for many activities at www.PortlandParks.org
