Portland Parks & Recreation Aikido Yoshokai Aikido, a form of Japanese Budo, is a path to self improvement based on martial art techniques. The goal of our study is not to defeat or control others, but to defeat and control our own egos. Students work as partners to study dynamic throws and powerful pins. It may look like they are fighting, but they are actually learning how to fit together and create harmony instead of conflict. We study harmony in Aikido so that we may learn to live in harmony with nature and the world. Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes. No jewelry. Uniforms required only for testing. Testing & Promotions: Testing fees start at $5, testing & promotion is not a requirement of the program. At time of first test, students join the National Association (Adults $35/year, Youth $20/year). There are no tournaments or competitions. New Students are accepted throughout the term. Fees are prorated for new students who begin mid-term. Sunday Class: enter the building through the pool entrance on the playground side of the center. Please knock on the door. We refer to morning Camp Adventures as our Summer Preschool. Following a format of free-choice, group time & physical activity this program is designed to stimulate thinking & enhance selfesteem. For this reason, we often encourage students planning to attend Preschool at Montavilla in the fall to enroll as a fun opportunity to become familiar with the classroom and daily routine.

Lunch Bunch gives students a low-key time of unstructured play. Great as a chance to unwind between structured morning and afternoon camps or just a fun way to extend either program and allow for more socialization time with friends. Children are supervised as they eat lunch together and then move out to the gym or playground to run off a little excess energy.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.
