Fall 2012

Community Centers This season’s features:

Charles Jordan Community Center On July 22, 2012 the University Park Community Center was renamed Charles Jordan Community Center. Charles Jordan, former Portland City Commissioner and former Director of Portland Parks & Recreation, served this community for more than three decades. After spending his early life in rural Texas, Jordan served as an officer in the U.S. Army. He received his B.S. from Gonzaga University in Education, Sociology, and Philosophy. In 2001, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Law degree by the University of Vermont. Jordan spent 10 years as Portland’s first African-American City Commissioner beginning in 1974. He then served 14 years as Director of Portland Parks & Recreation, retiring in 2003. Jordan literally changed Portland’s landscape by overseeing 44 new parks and natural areas during his tenure. Jordan was the force behind Portland landmarks such as Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, Delta Park, Southwest Community Center, renovations to Tom McCall Waterfront Park and Matt Dishman Community Center, and many more public projects and successes. As City Commissioner, Charles Jordan was noted for his innovative and unconventional approaches to problem solving. He developed the Community Juvenile Officer Program that put Portland Police officers in local schools to engage youth through positive interaction and activities. As Fire Commissioner, he developed an outreach training program to recruit people of color to the Fire Bureau. On the national stage, Charles Jordan broadened the agenda of the environmental movement and land conservation to make it more inclusive. He is known for his groundbreaking approach to putting people – particularly people of color – at the heart of the American Conservation Movement. More hallmarks of Jordan’s tenure include popular PP&R programs such as Movies in the Park, as well as innumerable youth initiatives. Jordan gained public support for two large bond measures and a parks levy. Charles Jordan’s leadership, commitment to Portland, and innovative policies have helped to ensure the city’s high quality of life for generations to come.

Educational Preschools Each of our four Community Centers offer an educational preschool program.

Our Educational Preschool Programs are all based on the philosophy that children learn through play, by exploring & manipulating their environment. The goal of our programs is to provide opportunities for children to develop & grow at their own rate. To enhance this experience, our classrooms are set up in learning centers that enable children to explore different areas of development, such as fine motor, socialization, pre-math, pre-reading & listening skills. All of our programs run concurrently with the Portland Public Schools’ calendar. Child must be potty trained & meet the minimum age required for each specific class by September 1st. Once registered, it is assumed your child will remain with the program for the entire school year. For more information on specific programs or to register, please contact the individual site.

Winter Break Camps @ MDCC

We ask that campers wear comfortable shoes & clothing each day as they will be active. Each camper should bring a healthy lunch, 2 healthy snacks, swimsuit, towel, water bottle. Drop-off & pick-up will be in the game room each day. For your child’s safety, parents/ guardians are required to sign their child in at the beginning of each day and sign them out at the end of the day. This is a great opportunity to check in with counselors about what is happening for the day and also double checking that everything went smoothly during the day. Please allow an extra 10 or 15 minutes on the first day, to complete a Camper Registration Form.

Structure & Variety

We include a variety of activities to keep young minds and bodies active and challenged. Free choice and relaxation time provides a chance to enjoy low-key activities between more in-depth, structured projects and games. All children are encouraged to participate, but never forced. Field trips to natural areas, recreation sites, and cultural centers are fun learning experiences. We create an environment that is structured and supportive, but also fun and flexible.

Staff & Safety

Payment

Payment is due prior to the camp start date. You may pay the entire balance at the time of registration, or you can pay a down payment of $10 per week and schedule your payments to be due Monday prior to the camp’s start date.

Registration

Safety is our number one priority. We hire highly skilled, energetic, and caring people who truly love working with children. All of our staff are First Aid and CPR certified, and must pass a background check.

Camps fill quickly, so register early. If you need to withdraw, a full refund will only be issued if the notice is given by noon on the Friday before camp starts. Prorated refunds will be given after that. Withdrawals made less than three days in advance will be assessed a $15 withdrawal fee.

Dance • Theatre • Music The Peninsula Performing Arts Academy provides a variety of choices of performance arts to all ages! Our Academy focuses on three mediums: Theatre, Dance & Music.

6 months - 4 years

For the youngest participants we have our “Exploring Movement” classes. These classes are designed to engage parents & children in a positive, fun & active experience. If you & your child are interested in music, be sure to check-out our “Music - Exploring Together!” course located with the Music Program.

3 years - 6 years

At age 3, children are eligible to join our progression based educational arts programs. Students ages 3-6 can work on their balance & coordination with our Level I Dance classes. These courses are traditionally some of our most popular courses and they focus on the introduction to various dance mediums, including: creative movement, ballet, tap, and hip-hop.

6 years - 14 years

Students can further develop their dance technique in ballet, tap, or hip-hop. Through our Theater program, students can participate in a performing piece that integrates vocal music, dance and theatre arts. The “American Musical Showcase” class is an interactive and popular program that performs well-known Broadway shows quarterly. Students enrolled in most Level I dance programs or above will participate alongside the theater students to make the show truly the culminating center of the performing arts academy. Children may repeat our classes as new concepts & materials will continue to be introduced. At age 8, students can enroll for private guitar lessons or private vocal lessons held weekly at Peninsula at an incredible value.

14 years & up

For our students who are 14 & up, we offer a variety of courses in every category. Classes include: Guitar, Ballet, Tap and Theatre. In addition the center offers a wide variety of adult fitness courses and courses designed for both parent & child to attend.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Josh has been at the center since 2010 and has worked as a Preschool Athletics Instructor and is a Counselor in our After School program. Josh feels that the best part about working at St. Johns is the people he works with and those folks he gets to meet on a daily basis. Josh acknowledged that he feels “like a rock star” when he is recognized at the local grocery store due to his work at the community center. You can find Josh teaching our preschool athletic classes and working in our “Grow” After School program this fall.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support the participant & accommodate their individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.
