Chamber Groups

Play trios, quartets, or other works with string, wind, or piano students at your level! Refine ensemble skills & interpretive abilities through rehearsals & coaching. Prerequisite: at least 3 years of private lessons on instrument, sight-reading skills, playing in positions with vibrato (strings). Groups are assigned for a two-hour slot between 9am & 1pm; schedule may vary from day to day & is confirmed two weeks before class begins. Chamber parts are available at least one week prior. Registration & payment required to schedule an audition. No refund unless not placed in a group. Violists & Cellists get 20% off! Chamber Music Auditions Call CMC to register & schedule an audition to assist us in creating the most compatible groups. For auditions, prepare a short piece or section of a work that best demonstrates your ability. Sight-reading is also assessed. Participants are notified about group assignment two weeks prior to the start of the class.

Note: We make every effort to place as many enrollees as possible, however due to limits of space & repertoire, it is sometimes not possible to find a group for everyone. In these instances, registration fees are refunded.

Concertante Orchestra

Follow your dreams of one day taking the spotlight! Join this symphonic team where musicians take turns being the concerto soloist accompanied by peers. A great orchestra you don’t have to play a concerto to join. Prerequisite: at least 3 years of private lessons on instrument, sight-reading skills, playing in positions with vibrato (strings). Registration & payment required to schedule an audition. Solo repertoire limited to Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, & other Baroque & Classical concertos or “encore” pieces - subject to instrumentation & music availability. Sign up for Chamber Groups & receive 20% off this class! Participants who do not play solos pay the lower rate. Portland Parks & Recreation Beginning Piano for Youth

Group Piano for Youth at CMC Group piano classes at CMC follow a two-year sequential course curriculum. Learning in a group setting is a fun way to introduce this fabulous instrument, while getting “hands on” experience, making new friends & gaining musical skills! All classes are held in CMC’s piano lab - students use digital pianos that simulate acoustic grands  Sequential Classes – Piano Foundations Term I,

II, III, & IV, then Piano Performer for two to four terms. Then Piano Laboratory is available.  Clear two-year course curriculum – Students are

more equally matched for a successful group class experience. See the chart below for more details. Piano Foundations and Performer classes use books in the Piano Town series (available at CMC).  Progress Review – With the instructor’s guidance

& approval, a student may repeat a term or advance. Two weeks before the end of each term the instructor makes evaluations & forwards those to the office staff. The family will be notified only if a change is required.  Consistent Schedule – During the school year,

in most cases students continue at the same day & time unless repeating a term or skipping ahead. Note: Students taking My First Piano Class in Summer should register for Piano Foundations Level 1 in Fall Term. Suzuki vs. Traditional: which method should I choose? String Lesson Program students at CMC have a choice of two distinct ways of studying their instrument in weekly lessons. The age of the student, as well as how much the parent is able to attend lessons and work with the student at home will have a large part to play in making this choice.

Traditional (Teacher/Student) Method:

This is the classic one-to-one approach to learning an instrument. The string player will practice every day at home between lessons on assignments given by the instructor. Parent involvement is not required, however parents of young students are often encouraged by the instructor to assist the child in the practice room. Parent observation of lessons is usually optional (but is recommended under age 9). Parents do not have to be musically trained.

Teacher/Parent/Student method (Suzuki):

This is a family approach to music instruction that creates a â&#x20AC;&#x153;learning triangleâ&#x20AC;? between teacher, parent & student. The parent, who does not need to have prior musical training, learns with the student & serves as the role model for the young player between lessons. Parents assist the young students in their practice at home each day as assigned by the instructor. When the student is not practicing the family listens to the recordings of the songs as much as possible to create the immersion that the method requires for the best learning experience. The goal is that music becomes like another language in the home. Parents are required to attend the Suzuki Parent Orientation class in September (see below) prior to placement with their first teacher.

Parent Orientation to Suzuki age: 18 & up Build harmonious connections at home! Discover the important dynamics of student, teacher & parent/ guardian in this method. Observe demonstrations, get insightful information & find the confidence needed to help beginning violin viola & cello students succeed. This class is required for placement with a Suzuki instructor. CMC has a limited number of violins, violas, cellos & guitars available for enrolled students to rent. Rental cost is $45 per term, with first term payment due at time of rental. Scholarships are available. Rental process 1. Call the CMC instrument rental coordinator (971255-2973) to get on a waitlist for an instrument. This should be done even if you are not yet confirmed for private lessons (youth), or if you are on a group class wait list (adults). 2. Once payment arrangements are made for private lessons/group class, set a fitting appointment with the instrument rental coordinator. 3. Meet with the rental coordinator. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll complete a rental agreement, make payment & receive your instrument (if your size is available). If none is available for your size, you may choose to remain on the waiting list. Preference is given to scholarship students, then youth, & then adults.

Portland Parks & Recreation Private Lesson Program Policy Information - String, Winds, Brass & Voice CMC’s Private Lesson Program for Youth

strives to provide the highest quality music education to as many dedicated students as possible, regardless of the ability to pay. In a continuing effort to achieve these goals, students & parents should seriously consider the following requirements before committing to take lessons at CMC.

Registration Process - See page 15 Practice Requirements It is important that students take lessons seriously, practice every day (at least as long as their lesson length), complete any homework assigned by instructors & progress in-step with their ability to learn. Students who are not progressing in-step with their ability to learn will receive instruction on how to improve practice habits. If no progress is made, CMC will require the student & parent to sign an agreement on how to improve practice.

Musicianship Requirements - Strings only *Applies to School Year Lessons* The CMC String Program for Youth is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster wellrounded musicians. To this end, CMC makes the following requirements for students taking lessons September - June:  Beginning string students age 5 and up are required to concurrently enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in a Music Skills class (see School Year catalog for information, or inquire at the office). Four year-olds

are exempt from this requirement, but are encouraged to take Launch Pad to Learning & are required to take Skills at age 5.

 Continuing string students are required to concurrently enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in Skills or other ensemble class (see School Year catalog for more information). Students who are receiving training of like quality elsewhere may apply for an exemption from an additional CMC activity.

Woodwind & brass students are currently exempt from the musicianship requirement, but are welcome to take any enrichment class at the reduced fee.

Attendance Requirements & Policies Because regular attendance is important, lessons & classes should not be missed except in unavoidable instances. As a courtesy to everyone an absence affects, the CMC office should be notified as much in advance as possible to allow for instructor schedule adjustments. Absences are classified as either Excused or Unexcused.  Excused Absence: Student illness or other unavoidable cause with notification as defined below. Excused absences not made up will be credited. Student Illness - CMC is notified at least one hour before the scheduled lesson time. Only one illness per term may be excused. Other Unavoidable Causes - CMC is notified at least one week before the scheduled lesson time. This allows time to notify the teacher and make necessary schedule changes.  Unexcused Absence: Any cause not listed above. No credits or make-ups will be offered for Unexcused Absences.

NOTE: A student may be dropped for two Unexcused Absences a term, three Excused Absences in a row, or four Excused Absences during a term. Because space is limited, a student may be dropped from the program if any of the above requirements are not met.

Withdrawal Policy Once accepted, the lesson time is reserved for your child through Summer term. CMC understands that extenuating circumstances arise and occasionally a student must withdraw before summer ends. Because of the effort it takes to set up teacher schedules, CMC’s withdrawal policy for private lessons is as follows: Notify the CMC office one full week before the next lesson & a refund of paid fees will be issued for the remaining lessons in the term. NOTE: This policy is different than the general PP&R withdrawal policy.

All students must pre-register again (in early August) for the school year. •Parents of new Suzuki Method students (strings only) must register for & attend a parent orientation in September. •Instructors may require purchase of additional materials not included in listed registration fee. •Purchase of a Non-Resident Pass required for Out-of-District participants; contact the office for details. Wait patiently for a call from the office confirming a lesson time. This occurs about 2 weeks before lessons begin (no earlier than June 13). If we cannot place a student, we will maintain a waitlist through early August. Pay tuition at the time of confirmation. Once payment is received, the student is officially registered.

Private Lesson Program for Youth – Program Requirements CMC's Private Lesson Program for Youth strives to provide the highest-quality music education to as many dedicated students as possible, regardless of ability to pay. To this end, CMC makes the following requirements, which parents & students should carefully consider before committing to lessons at CMC. 1. Practice Requirements Students should practice daily for at least as much time as their lesson length, complete any homework assigned by instructors, & progress in keeping with their ability to learn. NOTE: Students who fail to progress to the best of their ability will receive instruction on how to improve practice habits. If progress is still not made, CMC will require the student & parent to sign and fulfill a practice-improvement agreement. 2. Musicianship Requirements Only for String students during School Year - Waived Summer Term The CMC String program is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster well-rounded musicians. • Beginning string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in Basic Skills, On My Way With Basic Skills, Skills I, or Theory & Practice. Four-year-olds are excused from this requirement, but are encouraged to take Launch Pad to Learning Music or Basic Skills, & are required to take Skills at age 5. String Program students may take these courses at a reduced fee ($15 in 2011-12). • Continuing string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in an appropriate Skills class, Orchestra, Choir, Voice, Piano, Guitar, Rhythm Skills, Suzuki Group Class, or Chamber Music (fees vary; see school year catalog or ask the office about pre-requisites, special requirements, schedules & pricing). • The musicianship requirement may be satisfied if the student is receiving comparable training elsewhere. This must be documented with an Exemption Form. See the CMC office for details. • Students who begin in Summer become subject to the musicianship requirement upon enrolling for Fall Term. 3. Attendance Requirements & Policies Regular attendance is important. Lessons & classes should not be missed except in unavoidable circumstances. When a student must be absent, notify the CMC office as much in advance as possible to allow for instructor schedule adjustments. Absences are either excused or unexcused, as defined below: Excused Absence: • Student Illness – CMC must be notified at least one hour before the scheduled lesson time. Only one illness per term may be Excused. Subsequent illnesses will be Unexcused. • Other Unavoidable Causes – CMC must be notified at least one week before the scheduled lesson time. This allows time to notify the teacher & make schedule adjustments. Excused Absences will be credited. Unexcused Absence: Any cause not listed above. No credits or makeups will be offered for Unexcused Absences. 4. Causes for Dropping a Student Space in the Private Lesson Program is limited. At CMC’s discretion, students may be dropped for any of the following: • Failure to progress to the best of their ability. • Failure to fulfill the terms of a signed practice agreement. • Failure to fulfill the musicianship requirement. • Failure to maintain good attendance. NOTE: A student may be dropped for two Unexcused absences a term, three Excused absences in a row, or four Excused absences during a term. Extenuating circumstances may be considered on a case-by-case basis. 5. Withdrawal Policy Once accepted, the lesson time is reserved for your child through Summer Term. CMC understands that extenuating circumstances arise and occasionally a student must withdraw before Summer ends. Because of the effort it takes to set up teacher schedules, CMC’s withdrawal policy for private lessons is as follows: • Notify the CMC office one full week before the next lesson & a refund of paid fees will be issued for the lessons that remain in the term. NOTE: This policy is different than the general PP&R withdrawal policy.

Community Music Center Need-Based Scholarship Application Portland Parks & Recreation recognizes that some of the residents of the City of Portland require lower tuition to attend certain recreational activities. The Community Music Center has its own scholarship process because the tuition subsidy is provided by a non-profit fundraising organization through generous donations. How to apply 1. Submit a scholarship form with your registration. A spot will be reserved for you during the scholarship application process. For the Private Lesson Program (strings, voice, woodwind/brass), submit the scholarship form with your preregistration. One form per student, please. Incomplete forms will be returned un-processed. 2. Submit documentation once per year with the scholarship form to substantiate your income level. The information requested is confidential and is necessary to help determine the degree of need for each applicant. Scholarships will be denied without documentation once per year. 3. When scholarship is approved, pay tuition balance, or request scheduled payments. CMC may limit scholarships for multiple classes. Scholarship amounts may be adjusted through work-study, in which case recipients complete a volunteer application form. Scholarships may be denied for clients not meeting their payment commitment, program requirements, and/or maintaining at least 80% attendance. It has been a popular place for music lessons and concerts in Portland since 1955, and is now one of over 20 PP&R sites offering music instruction. It is also part of the National Guild for Community Arts Education. About the non-profit organization Community Music Center, Inc. Events at CMC CMC adds to the rich variety of live performances in Portland with over 150 music events every year in the David Beasley Campbell Recital Hall. A resident is: • anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the city limits of Portland, which includes the Portland Public, Parkrose, and David Douglas School Districts. • any child living within the school boundaries of the Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is attending a SUN Community School. Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident fee. Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a NR fee. NR fees do not apply to drop-in activities. Non-residents who wish to register for PP&R activities may choose one of these options: • pay the additional 30% non-resident fee. • purchase resident status as either an individual or family for a period of three, six, nine, or twelve months from the date of purchase. Inquire about this option at time of registration. Non-resident passes are not refundable. Passes are activated at the date of purchase.

Mail. Mail your completed registration form (next page) to Community Music Center, 3350 SE Francis St, Portland, OR 97202. Include full payment using your Visa, Mastercard, or check payable to City of Portland.

Fax. Fax to 503-823-3171. Complete the registration form (next page) and fax it to us with full payment using your Visa or Mastercard. Fax is accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week but is processed during regular business hours. In Person. Any PP&R facility is able to process your registration, including the Customer Service Center, located on the 1st floor of the Portland Building at 1120 SW 5th Ave. See the map of our facilities on page 28-29.
