Portland Parks & Recreation Parent & Toddler Art Classes These classes offer a process-oriented art experience. While providing instruction in the use of art materials and techniques, our teachers guide students through the creative process in an effort to elicit and encourage each child’s individual style of visual expression. Rather than simply following directions to construct prescribed art “products,” children in our classes learn to trust their own creative impulses while being supported by their parent or guardian. We recommend both adult and child wear grubbies as these classes can be messy. All materials are included. Cleanup is part of visual arts classes. Once classes are full, we cannot accept extra students.

100 Years of Roses— Peninsula Park Ages 16 & Up

Found Words at the Farmer’s Market Ages 16 & Up

Borrowed Scenery—The Japanese Garden Ages 16 & Up

Peninsula Park was Portland’s original Rose Garden. A century later, many of the park’s original features remain. Explore the history of this often overlooked park, and consider how the park currently functions. What happens to a city’s landmarks? How does a city reenvision its history? Read, walk, write, discuss, and leave time to smell the roses. Bring a sack lunch. Meet at AJ Java, 6425 N. Albina Ave.

Translate the color, music, taste, sounds, and characters of the midsummer festival on Portland’s park blocks into writing. Wander individually through the crowd, recording details that make this market, this day, and these three blocks hum with a vibrancy all its own. We will meet again to fold these findings into a piece of writing and share our results after. Bring a notebook, a timepiece, and a towel or seat for the grass. Meet in front of PSU’s Smith Memorial Student Union, SW Park between Montgomery and Harrison.

In this ideal setting for contemplation and observation, We’ll consider some of the basic principles behind the garden’s design, and their potential relationships to writing. We’ll wander the garden paths and write. Exercises will help jump-start the writing process. We’ll meet again to share our results, with time for feedback and ideas. Garden admission not included in workshop fee. Meet in the back room at World Cup Coffee, NW 18th & Glisan.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/ special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support the participant & accommodate their individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

Agrippina is considered Handel’s first operatic masterpiece; according to Winton Dean it has few rivals for its “sheer freshness of musical invention.” Grimani’s libretto has also come in for much praise: The New Penguin Opera Guide describes it as one of the best Handel ever composed, and praises the “light touch” with which the characters are vividly portrayed. Agrippina as a whole is, in the view of scholar John E. Sawyer, “among the most convincing of all the composer’s dramatic works.”
