Youth Drop-In Descriptions Basketball – Open Gym age: 17 & under Come by the Center after school and get in a couple games of pick up basketball. School ID required and must fill out a Youth Registration Card to participate. Friday Night Live! grades: 6-12 A great time to relax, play basketball, get involved in a craft project, watch a movie, play foosball and just hang with friends. Friday Night Live staff provide a safe, supervised environment for teens every Friday night. School ID required and youth must fill out a Registration card on first visit.

Bridge Buddies Educational Preschool

Your bridge to a lifelong love of learning at St Johns Community Center

Polly McCourt has an interesting and varied background working with children and families. For the last 9 years she has taught Preschool – 2nd grade at Trillium Charter School in north Portland. She is the mother of six children varying in age from 13 to 25 and has lived in Portland for the past 20 years, haling from Brooklyn, New York. Polly has been deeply involved in education and schools in Portland. She says “I believe strongly in school choice and finding a school that fits your individual child. I enjoy small children tremendously. I believe in the power of play, art, story and experience. I strongly believe in exposure to books. Books and stories are a fundamental building block of literacy for children.”

Bridge Buddies Classes:

Patty McCord has been teaching for more than 30 years with experiences ranging from rural Vale, OR to the Portland metro area. She is a state licensed and certified teacher and has taught preschool in SUN Community School programs as well as substituting full time. Patty says, “My flexibility helps me to facilitate life long learners by using cooperative learning situations incorporated in thematic units across curriculum. I enjoy teaching academics and physical education to all levels of students. Patty is also enjoys reading, making greeting cards, scrapbooking, gardening, belly dance and yoga.

Preschool Ages: 3-4 Creative play in a supportive environment is important to a child’s positive overall development. Make friends playing, painting, singing & sharing. Music Lessons

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that music lessons improve listening skills, concentration and memory. Music students also have been shown to do better on standardized tests and achieve higher grades in school. In addition, children who take music lessons learn to think creatively and to solve problems by imagining various solutions. Give your child or yourself the gift that lasts a lifetime!

The community centers of North Portland are now working in collaboration to offer youth athletic leagues for basketball. Practices will take place at St. John’s Community Center and all games will be held on Fridays at Charles Jordan Community Center. These noncompetitive athletic leagues for boys and girls emphasize participation, safety and fun. Scores and standings are not kept with emphasis placed on sportsmanship and skill development. Basketball - KBA Positive Play age: 8-11 Dribble, Pass, Shoot & Score. It’s a bucket! Build confidence & self-esteem in this non-competitive, entry level league in a safe environment. Focuses on skill development ball handling, passing, teamwork & sportsmanship through team play. Sign up for the practice time that works for you!
