Hi Coach Blaine, Thanks so much for all that you do! I’m mason & Orion’s mom (from Sports Mania) & it was such a thrill to see them learning new sports & games. Mason & Orion are twins. The first year of their life we were in and out of the NICU & hospital for a variety of health problems, so to see them out playing sports & keeping up with the other kids was such a beautiful thing. You made them feel so confident and I hope its part of the beginning of an active lifestyle for them both. I’m sure you’ll see us again for another session of classes. Thanks for making our week so wonderful.

Introducing ... Dani Ferguson (the new downtown Parks Maintenance Supervisor) By: Bryan Aptekar, West Service Zone Coordinator
If you’ve never met Dani Ferguson, the first thing you’ll notice about her is her amazing energy. She is so full of joy and excitement that she can barely contain herself. Dani has stepped into an important role in our West Service Zone, as the Parks Maintenance Supervisor II, overseeing a large crew of professional Parks Technicians, Horticulturalists, Utility Workers, a Botanic Specialist, and a small cadre of seasonal employees. Together they make sure that our downtown parks are safe, clean, and welcoming for all. Dani is both new with Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) and an old timer at the same time. She came to the field of horticulture, or what she calls the Green Industry, indirectly. She hit the road with her college sweetheart in their Dodge Charger after earning her BA in psychology, seeing where their hearts lead them. They landed in Hood River, where she worked for several years in social work settings, counseling juvenile delinquents, supporting mentally challenged adults, until one of the programs she worked with partnered with a commercial wholesale nursery. It was then that “this true joy exploded out of me,” says Dani, who started taking night classes hours away at Clackamas Community College to learn the field of horticulture. Eight years later, with years of study and skills, a friend shared a small ad in the Oregonian recruiting for what was then called a Gardener (Horticulturalist, today) for PP&R. To her delight (and ours) Dani was selected for what she calls “the most wonderful job in the world.” She started working at PP&R along with a few others, including Lance Wright and Robin Akers, two other horticulturalists who are in her crew today. For eight years she worked 4 Westside Parks

throughout the city, from our Horticultural Services unit to the Peninsula Park rose garden, from the north zone to the downtown parks, Dani has put her hands in the dirt throughout Portland. With well rounded horticultural training – she’s done everything from growing plants from seed, seeing those plants to maturity in various landscapes, to managing larger landscapes in many of Portland’s famous parks – there was one dream that she had yet to fulfill. So at the age of 40, she left PP&R to start her own nursery with her husband, a skilled union carpenter. Like a homesteading story from yesteryear, she describes finding the perfect bit of acreage, with good soil, fresh water, and a good location between the Portland and Salem markets. Recalling the decision to move on, she shares, “there was just this spark when I was in a nursery. Selling what you grew, having a connection to the end buyer. It appealed to my heart.” So, she and her husband, Jeff, created Ferguson’s Fragrant Nursery, a specialty nursery featuring fragrant plants, including four acres of display gardens, reminiscent of the landscapes she cared for in Portland’s parks. For more than a decade she brought joy and good smells to the world through plants. Unfortunately, after many years of pursuing their dream together, her husband passed away,
which led to the decision to start the next chapter in her life, by returning to PP&R. We are lucky and pleased to have Dani return to our family, where she has history, friends, and a community eager to welcome her. This is a challenging time for our work crews, with recent budget cuts. Dani’s positive energy, strength, and wealth of business and horticultural skills make her a great leader for this time. If you run into Dani in one of our parks or at a meeting with one of our partner organizations, please give her a warm welcome.

Reclaimed Logs, November 2011 We introduced natural elements into the courtyard to foster imaginative play for our students. When it is not appropriate for a nature walk, children are able to create new games and develop gross motor skills right outside the classroom doors. MaryAnn Takashima, Laure Butera, Catherine, and John Watkins of Parks’ Urban Forestry team met on several occasions choosing just the right pieces to salvage. Joe Lastomirsky (family friend & Sprout supporter) supplied the large wooden stump for the children’s table.
Fundraising efforts Starting in the Fall 2011, we set a goal to raise $1100 of the $2100 needed for the kit (WSG.org matches $1000 for each school in the program). We collected $616 in individual cash donations and $484 from a generous sponsor! See www.SproutAcademy.wordpress.com for the complete list.

Woolly’s are made in the USA from 90%+ recycled plastic bottles! The kit came with 44 pockets, soil, seeds, drip irrigation kit, and an easyto-use annual curriculum to get teachers started. These are also available for purchase for home use! Portland Nursery sells them here in town along with a few other retailers.

Portland Parks & Recreation
SW Neighborhoods Parks and Community Centers Committee By: Leonard Gard and Amy Steingrebe Summer 2011 programs Despite the limitations of a very tight budget, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) has been able to continue good programs that benefit the community. This was the fifth year of the Youth Conservation Crew, a program that provides summer employment for young people ages 14 to 18, most of whom are from lowincome families. In 2011, there were 56 people in the program. This year, due to budget constraints, 42 participated. In southwest Portland, they removed ivy, restored trails, and did pruning at Rieke School. Here is a telling statistic that speaks to the need for the Youth Conservation Crew: there are about 200 applicants for every space available. Other programs that have continued in 2012 include the Nuts About Nature classes and the Summer Nature Day Camps. With the help of many sponsors and volunteers, PP&R once again produced a great line-up of concerts and movies in parks this summer. In the area served by the Parks Committee, events took place at Willamette Park, Elizabeth Caruthers Park, Duniway Park, and Multnomah Arts Center.
Parks Committee meetings: The committee is one of the standing committees of Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that serves seventeen neighborhood associations in southwest Portland. The committee meets every first Thursday of the month, usually at the Multnomah Center. The public is always invited to attend. For more information, call Leonard at 503-823-4592. And subscribe to SWNI’s monthly newspaper, the SW Neighborhood News. It’s free. 6 Westside Parks

River View Natural Area: It’s now been just over a year since the city acquired the Riverview Natural Area: Crews have removed invasive plants and stabilized trails. So far, about 95% of invasive trees and climbing vines and 80% of invasive ground plants have been removed. There was a terrible infestation of ivy; now it’s gone. A wonderful sign of change - this past spring trillium started poking through the ground cover. So far, PP&R has identified 130 plant species; 30 mammal species, and 74 bird species. Crews also closed all the mountain bike jumps. Next summer, PP&R plans to begin work on a Habitat Management and Trail Plan for the site, and in doing so, will work with various partners, including the Collins View Neighborhood Association, the Portland Garden Club, Lewis & Clark College, and River View Cemetery. Southwest Community Center MaryAnn Takashima, the Director of the SW Community Center, was a guest at a recent SWNI Parks committee meeting. She reported on operational changes that have occurred recently at the center; changes that show an openness to innovation. 2012 summer camp registrations increased from the previous year. There were big increases for pre-school summer camps, and for the first time there were camps for two-year olds. In the past, program analysis focused on the total number of registrations and revenue generated. This year, analysis focused on the number of registrants within each grade group, and that resulted in two more camps over 2011. The center has a big presence in electronic social media. In addition to the PP&R website, SWCC has three blogs - a main blog and two which focus on camps and the Sprout Academy. An email newsletter is broadcast through Constant Contact and about 800 people
follow the center on its Facebook page. The center has always responded positively to ideas for better environmental and human health practices. The center has dramatically reduced its paper consumption, communicating now by the electronic media mentioned above. Camp letters to parents no longer go out. Far fewer hard copies of catalogs are printed. These changes, of course, also have the beneficial effect of saving money on printing. The Sprout Academy is now a green pre-school. It has been certified as an eco-healthy school by the Oregon Environmental Council. The school passed a 30-point checklist for a healthful physical environment. Three new elements, all related to nature play, have been installed: a sandbox, a garden with plants growing from fabric pockets hanging from a wall, and logs fixed on the floor. Friends of Spring Garden Park The Friends continue to work to support development of Spring Garden Park. Next event: Playdate in the Park and Storywalk on Saturday, September 8, in the park. It’s a great event for children. More information is at www.swni.org and the Friends’ Facebook page. (Continued on bottom of next page)

that is not native to our ecosystem and can degrade our precious natural areas. Ivy takes over a forest and can change a diverse, thriving ecosystem into a desert of only one weed. Ivy grows up trees and can cause them to fall over because of the extra weight. This plant is responsible for smothering innocent native plants, recklessly eroding slopes, and decreasing the overall biodiversity in our treasured ecosystem. So, why not get a large group of people together to work hard to remove English ivy and then celebrate their accomplishments? This is what the No Ivy League program is about. There will be morning ivy removal work parties across Portland’s natural areas following by a public celebration. Enjoy lunch, listen to special speakers, and mingle with other community members. Willamette Park Redevelopment Plan The Parks Committee is proud of committee member Ken Love. He’s a busy man – the chair of the South Portland Neighborhood Association, a member of the SW Neighborhoods board, and now a member of the project

The plan is comprehensive in scope and includes restoration of the riverbank to create habitat for salmon, establishment of viewpoints, better pedestrian and bicycle circulation, and re-location of the dog off-leash area. The plan will guide the spending of $600,000 in funds that PP&R received in compensation for the siting of a Water Bureau pump station in the park. The advisory committee is finishing its work; an open house will be held soon.

PP&R intends to start on the first phase of this project this year. However, in order to fully restore a playground to the park, the neighborhood will need to raise funds. A fundraising campaign is currently underway and donations are tax deductible. If you are interested in helping bring the playground back to Marshall Park, please send a check to SWNI indicating it is for Marshall Park Playground.

(Continued from previous page) Marshall Park The Marshall Park Neighborhood Association and the Friends of Marshall Park are working together with Portland Parks & Recreation to bring a playground back to Marshall Park. The neighborhood is interested in bringing both conventional play equipment and nature play activities to the park. Current ideas being considered are swings, a slide, and natural climbing areas. Other components being reviewed include habitat restoration, trail and access improvement, and creek protection, including a designated area for creek access with interpretive signage.

Little Artists Preschool debuts in Southwest Portland By: By: Aimé Kelly, Youth Arts Director, Multnomah Arts Center
Multnomah Arts Center proudly announces the launch of our artsbased educational preschool: Little Artists Preschool. A center for highquality, arts-focused early childhood education for ages 2, 3 and 4, our school provides guided instruction in the use of art materials and techniques in visual arts, dance, music and theatre. Little Artists Preschool is a nurturing environment that encourages each child’s individual style of creative expression. We strongly believe that arts education is fundamental to the development of a healthy, happy and engaged mind. Are you interested in registering? School will begin October 1, 2012 but registration packets are available now by clicking Little Artists Preschool at www.MultnomahArtsCenter.org or picking up a registration pack at MAC. MAC’s preschool will unlock the infinite possibilities inherent in minds of young children. It will ignite their curiosity for visual arts, music, move-
ment, and dramatic play, as well as traditional language and academic skills. Rather than follow directions to construct prescribed “products,” we will focus on each child’s “process”. Children in our program will learn to trust their own creative impulses while being supported by professional educators. We will strive, above all else,
to bring joy to every child enrolled. You are welcomed to contact the Multnomah Arts Center Director, Michael Walsh at 503-823-2284 or Michael.Walsh@PortlandOregon.gov for more information, too. Thank you for your interest in Little Artists Preschool and we hope to hear from you soon!

marketing efforts toward the internet. We will continue to produce the West Service Zone Guide, but will limit the amount of guides that we print and mail. While printing will decrease, we hope to reach even more guests through our many on-line connections! Reduction of Operation Staff means that we have fewer staff to take care of our beautiful parks and plantings. We are prioritizing our daily work to ensure that our parks remain safe and clean – and ask for your patience as we adjust to these staff reductions. We are all stepping into a new year filled with change and opportunity. As a bureau, we know that we can’t do it alone, and more than ever we rely on the support and guidance of an amazing community to help us get the work done. Together, we will take our parks and programs into the future. Together, we will create a brave new world.

from 4% ($1,752,219 reduction) to 8% ($3,504,438 reduction). In the end, the bureau-wide annual operating budget was reduced by 6% or $2.7 million for the FY 2012 – 2013 (July 2012 – June 2013). For those of us working and recreating in the West Service Zone, this reduction came at a high price.
Among the cuts, were General Fund elimination of two community centers (Fulton Park Community Center and Hillside Community Center), cuts in our marketing budget, along with significant staff reductions for the daily maintenance of our beautiful west side parks. Budget Cuts come at a cost, but can also provide opportunities for greatness. The elimination of funding for Fulton Park Community Center and Hillside Community Center brought many together in support of much loved programs and facilities. These concerned supporters worked with us to find practical ways to maintain programs that are well used and appreciated. As a result of the time, effort, innovation and support of many individuals and organizations, changes at Fulton Community Center will occur, but the facility will continue to provide a welcome space for an avid dance community; options for birthday parties, community events and rentals, including basketball, volleyball and other private or community functions. In addition, the facility will continue to provide youth education programming, now operated by a partner organization. Hillside Community Center will continue to operate due to the generous support and collaborative approach of the surrounding community. At Hillside, this support will help us to introduce a LETS GROW healthy kids focus, with our new “GROW AFTERSCHOOL” program and continue to offer the preschool, camps and classes that have been a staple for the neighborhood. It’s times such as these that we clearly see why our facilities are called “community” centers. As a result of marketing reductions, we will be shifting our

Portland Parks & Recreation
Terwilliger Parkway Centennial Festival By: Leonard Gard, SWNI The early 1900’s were eventful in Portland’s development. It was a time of major public works. In 1903, workers completed our public system of dams, reservoirs, and pipes that delivers water from the Bull Run watershed. In 1905, Portland hosted the Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition. By 1910, Portland was home to 207,000 residents. In 1903, the city’s Park Board hired Massachusetts landscape architects John and Frederic Olmsted to write a parks planning report for Portland. John spent a month in Portland doing research. The Olmsted brothers finished their report at the end of 1903; the Parks Board adopted it in 1904. The Olmsted brothers believed that cities should have what they called wellbalanced and well-developed systems of municipal parks. They believed that a park system should be comprehensive, in the sense of having different kinds of parks: larger parks attracting city-wide use, neighborhood parks, public squares, and boulevards. And they believed that a system of parks should be physically interconnected by way of linear boulevards and parkways. The parkways they envisioned are the antecedent of what we now call the 40-mile loop. One of the parkways envisioned was the “South Hillside Parkway,” running from the south end of downtown to River View Cemetery or
even farther south. Between 1909 and 1912, the donation of land from heirs of pioneer James Terwilliger led to the construction of Terwilliger Parkway, which now comprises almost 99 acres. Now, 100 years later, we have just celebrated the parkway’s centennial with three days of events this past July: The northern gateway monument was unveiled on Friday, July 20. It’s located in Duniway Park just off SW 6th Avenue, across from Terwilliger Plaza. A crowd of about 100 heard speakers from the City of Portland, Metro, and the community. Bill Hawkins IV, a descendant of L. L. Hawkins, a Parks Board member in the early 1900’s, told the story of how his ancestor guided John Olmsted on a tour of Portland during his 1903 visit. They used a horse-drawn buggy. Bill displayed the whip that L. L. held on the buggy tour. It’s still in the family. On Saturday, July 21, Robin Jensen, of Friends of Marquam Nature Park, and Don Baack, of SW Trails PDX, guided morning and afternoon hikes. That evening a concert was held in Duniway Park featuring the band Trashcan Joe. About 300 people attended the event, sponsored by Terwilliger Plaza. At intermission, actress Jane Van Boskirk portrayed famous suffragette Abigail Duniway. Three runs were held on Sunday, July 22—five and eight kilometer runs for adults and a one kilometer run for children. Thanks in particular should be extended to the following: • To the Terwilliger Parkway Centennial Festival Committee: Doug Weir, Anton Vetterlein, Robin Vesey, Susan Egnor, Holly Zimmerman, Wes Risher, Peter DeCrescenzo, Walt Amacher, and Jack Liskear. • To the sponsors Oregon Health Sciences University and ODS, and to additional supporters Terwilliger Plaza; Engineered Machinery, Inc.; Widmer Brothers; Umpqua Bank; Fred Meyer; Foot Traffic; and Energy Events

• To Portland Parks & Recreation, and in particular to Elizabeth KennedyWong, Max Behrens, and Angela Abel, for their help in event planning. Thanks also go to PP&R’s maintenance crew for installation of new bench seats and cutting back vegetation to re-open historic viewpoints along the Parkway. Two favorites of this writer are 1) Elk Point, next to the Chart House restaurant, with a view to the east, and 2) near the playground just north of the Parkway intersection with SW Hamilton St, with views of Mt. Hood and the Willamette River. Now, Terwilliger Parkway enters its second century. Portlanders can wish it well for another 100 years and recognize it for what it is—an important and beautiful community asset as a stand-alone public space, but also as a first component of a regional network, and an idea ahead of its time.

General Fund support for the operation of Hillside Community Center budget was eliminated as of July 1, 2012. Thanks to the guidance and collaboration with the Hillside community, this facility will continue to operate without funding support through the implementation of a surcharge fee of 15% on all classes and 20% on rentals. This premium fee will fill the gap left by the budget funding cut. Fees listed in this brochure have been calculated to include the added surcharge. If you have questions, or would like more information regarding this operation change, please contact Hillside Community Center’s Director, Tim Hammock, at 503-823-3181. Portland Parks and Recreation greatly appreciates the generous support and guidance of Hillside’s patrons, neighbors and neighborhood association through this budget process.

Thanks to the guidance and collaboration with the Hillside community, this facility will continue to operate without funding support through the implementation of a surcharge fee of 15% on all classes and 20% on rentals. Why is Sprout Unique? What is a Green Preschool?
Director Park
Sprout Academy is a certified Eco- Healthy school by the Oregon Environmental Council. Our classroom passed a 30-point checklist that evaluated the paint on the walls, the cleaning products we use, the educational materials on the shelves, and more demonstrating that the space meets the OEC’s requirements for certification. The Sprout Academy is a safe place for your child to learn & play. In addition to the physical space being Eco-Healthy, instructors lead by example and teach students the importance of reducing, reusing, repurposing & recycling. We are outdoors as much as possible taking the children through the park to learn how everything is connected and why the environment matters to each of us! We have our own community garden plot as a second classroom in warmer weather. Children learn simple concepts of sustainability and how we can each do our part. You might find your little Sprout teaching you, too!
We did it!
Hillside CC
With YOUR help, the Sprout Academy successfully fundraised for our very own Woolly School Organic Garden that is now installed in the preschool courtyard. Each class participates in planting, maintaining, and harvesting the herbs, veggies, & flowers for a number of the pockets (we have 44 total!). What a fabulous educational resource for our students. Learn more about the project & our donors at www.SproutAcademy.wordpress.com. Again, a heartfelt THANK YOU to all who contributed!

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide.
How it Works
First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support the participant & accommodate their individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (MondayFriday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

With 3 years of TKD classes at SWCC, I am thrilled with the confidence, focus, grace, discipline and dignity that the class has instilled in my daughter Rowan, age 8. They don’t just focus on TKD but also grades, and how to be a helpful, respectful part of society. Rowan’s favorite part of class is learning her new forms. ~ Cole Budlong

Lane lines divide lap lanes. Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway lap lanes may become crowded, at these times “circle swimming” is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmer’s speed: slow, medium, and fast. Look at the yellow markers at the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane.
