Wow, I can’t believe it took me so long to discover this gem. I love to run in Gabriel Park, but I never went into (SWCC) until a recent weekend when we decided to take baby for a swim. The facilities are beautiful! The pools are awesome. The kid pool is warm, has lots of fountains and cool features. This is a great place for families.

Customer Service Spotlight: Mark Twohy By: Jacki Hunter, Customer Service Center Representative What happens when you call the Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) “Information Line” at 503823-2525? Well, you are connected to one of the most knowledgeable ‘Parkies’ in the bureau. Many of the Customer Service Center (CSC) Staff have worked at multiple community centers and programs around the city. In our personal lives we are frequent park users and community center patrons. We enjoy coming to work each day to answer questions, assist you with reservations (at one of our picnic, wedding, or sporting areas), and addressing your concerns. I want to highlight one of the ‘Parkies’ you may be connected with: Mark Twohy. Mark has worked at PP&R for 12 years. He joined the CSC after teaching children’s theater classes at Multnomah Arts Center. Mark is an actor and stage manager for many local theater companies in Portland and always loves a good show! In the Customer Service Center, we strive to provide you the best service… and do it with a smile. Mark says, “That’s because we try to the find the humor in things whenever possible.” One of Mark’s many favorite things about working in the CSC is assisting

happy couples book a park for their wedding or special day. Early each January the permits for reserving space in our parks for weddings and other events become available for the calendar year. These are fun-filled days, often with a line of hopeful couples stretched around the corner of the building when we open. Last year Mark thoroughly enjoyed greeting each bleary eyed couple, many who had camped out for several hours in the chilly January morning, when he worked his first “Wedding Day.” “There was a sense of accomplishment,” he says, “when I saw the joy and relief bubble up and the stress release from their shoulders

after booking their wedding location.” Mark also enjoys hearing stories of people’s special days from friends and family who come in to return keys in the days immediately following the wedding. Mark went on to say, “Being a peripheral part of the planning process for couples booking weddings with Portland Parks is truly gratifying! If I can help relieve some of the stress of planning an event within a Portland park, I can end my day feeling really good about what I do.”

NEW YEAR, NEW WHAT? By: Linda Hastings – Fitness Goddess of Southwest Community Center The holiday season is finally over, and I find myself in desperate need of cleaning my mental “house”. My poor brain is foggy and exhausted from too much. Too much frenzied activity, too many hyper-indulgent types of food, and a tidal wave of emotion. Basically, I need a break. A holiday from the holidays. The sad fact is that most of us could use a vacation at this moment, and practically none of us can do that because we just squandered one on the frantic doings we just got done with! So now, as a special cherry to top off the special sundae of ferocious festivities, we’re supposed to “start anew”, make “resolutions” to “buck up and get with the program”, to bully ourselves into doing all the stuff we didn’t do last year when we tried to buck up and get with the program. Well this year I am registering a formal protest. This is the absolute worst time of the year to heap more pressure on our already way over worked stress reaction systems, and I am taking umbrage with the whole ridiculous resolution concept. In fact I declare a resolution revolution, and my

revolution revolves around revelation!! This time of year we are all in danger of total burn out, and yet this is the time of year we pick to berate and torture ourselves even more, for the hand-crafted, self-imposed, “sins of the season!” Come on folks! Is this really a reasonable way to start our New Year? Let’s all step back for a second, and revel in my revelation. What we actually need and deep down want right now is care, rest and comfort. I’m not talking about

the self-destructive types of comfort; we’ve already indulged ourselves to the max on those. I’m talking about the comfort you get from a job well done, from the care of others, from a good nights rest, and taking care to live in the moment, and stand in the truth. The truth is that you have frazzled your brain. The truth is that you have eaten your brains out on less than nutritious fare. The truth is that you are just plain tired, and in need of some quiet “me” time. So go to bed tonight. Early. Opt out of the party circuit for awhile, I promise you won’t miss anything epic. Throw all the uneaten candy and crap out! NOW. Then spend a little time with yourself. Try a new class. Write about it in your journal. Play yourself a tune on your favorite instrument. Dance to your favorite record. Breathe. Starting something new or making new beginnings is not some big mandatory life thing we have to do just because it’s January. Starting something new and making new life choices is something we are ultimately capable of, and need to embrace, every single day of our lives on this planet.

SW Neighborhoods Parks and Community Centers Committee By: Leonard Gard River View Natural Area On October 2, Astrid Dragoy, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) City Nature Natural Areas Manager , guided committee members on a tour of River View Natural Area, a 146acre parcel that PP&R, the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), Metro and Trust for Public Lands purchased from River View Cemetery in 2011. PP&R is working closely with the BES in the stabilization and restoration of the natural area. The land was purchased to provide access to nature, provide for watershed health, salmon recovery and active lifestyles. River View Natural Area is part of the Westside Wildlife Corridor and contains seven streams that, due to the property’s dense forest canopy discharges clean and cool water directly to the Willamette River, . PP&R has completed a vegetation assessment, a Desired Future Condition (25 year timeframe) and with their BES partner, is currently working on invasive species removal. After the first year of treatment, city crews have already removed 95% of the ivy on trees and 80% of it on the ground. Stabilization of vegetation will continue through 2016. PP&R will also assess hazard trees. Vegetation management will be an on-going project. The PP&R stewardship program will help to

Parks Committee meetings:

The committee is one of the standing committees of Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc., a nonprofit corporation that serves seventeen neighborhood associations in southwest Portland. The committee meets every first Thursday of the month, usually at the Multnomah Arts Center. The public is always invited to attend. For more information, call Leonard at 503-823-4592. cultivate friends groups and guide restoration activities. PP&R also plans to convene a project advisory committee to help with the planning for the natural area. In Spring 2013, PP&R will develop a habitat management and trail plan that will integrate ecological functions and access. PP&R and BES will be applying for capital and grant funds for habitat improvements and trails projects once the plan is complete. PP&R has mapped the existing trails, all demand trails built by users without permission or planning. PP&R has closed a couple of trails that were determined to be dangerous. The next step is a trail assessment that may lead to the permanent decommissioning of some redundant or ecologically damaging trails and may result in new trails being constructed. Signs will be posted that set out park rules and identify the new trail system. Bike jumps and off-trail attractions like tree forts and bonfire areas have been removed. Thanks again, Astrid, for leading the tour. Willamette Park Redevelopment Plan The Project Advisory Committee (PAC) for Willamette Park met regularly in 2012 to help write a plan for redevelopment of Willamette Park. The heavily used park is in much need of improvements. PP&R received $600,000 from the Water Bureau in compensation for a soon to be constructed pump station within the park. That money, earmarked for improvements in Willamette Park, made it imperative to start planning for redevelopment in the park. The PAC went to work, and here are its recommendations: 1. Creation of a viewing platform and open spaces.

2. A two-trail system, with one trail for pedestrians and recreation bicyclists, and one trail for commuter bicyclists. 3. A trail with access to the river. 4. An improved environment for fish & wildlife and protection of the oak grove. 5. Ten-foot wide loop trails to create walking options. 6. Re-location of the dog off-leash area out of the oak grove area to the north end of the park. 7. A boat access for non-motorized boats and watercraft. 8. A new location for the story garden—a pattern of stones on the ground that tell a story. The estimate of the total cost for all the above improvements is over $2 million, and only the $600,000 is available now. But it’s a good start. PP&R is also working with the Bureau of Environmental Services on a plan to restore the riverbank at the park and to create a habitat at water’s edge where fish can feed and rest. BES will pay for that project. A final PAC plan report is expected on November 30. After all the approvals are gained, PP&R expects to assign a project manager to proceed with implementation of the plan.

Liberate Shakespeare! By: Aimé Kelly, Youth and Arts Outreach Director The Multnomah Arts Center’s Theatre Arts outreach troupe, The Shakespeare Liberation Army (SLA), began their residency at Jackson Middle School on October 29, 2012. The SLA’s performance and residency, funded by the Multnomah Arts Center Association and a grant from ONI/SWNI, reached over 600 members of the Jackson Middle School community in SW Portland. The SLA brings Shakespeare alive in a way that is very accessible to all ages through an entertaining and dynamic performance. The project goal of the SLA is to encourage a greater understanding and appreciation for theatre, specifically Shakespeare, in both seasoned and novice audience members. The adaptation has been developed to capture the spirit of the text, while making the archaic language accessible. The result is a concise interpretation

of the work’s artistic merits and significance. Following the performance, MAC teaching artists, Timothy Scarrott and Aimé Kelly, offer nine hours of classroom instruction. This classroom instruction will cover the plot points of Macbeth, the rich history of the Elizabethan stage, basic acting skills and the relevance of language in the theatre. Students will begin to learn to decipher Shakespearean language on their own and expand their interpretation, literacy skills and also improve their understanding that the messages of Shakespeare are cultural key stones. Their involvement will hopefully stimulate a life-long interest in theatre while increasing engagement and performance in school.

This place is great! In fact, one of the main reasons I bought a home down the street was because of this place. There are literally hundreds of art opportunities awaiting you at this facility. Cheap too! My kids have taken classes in clay animation and metalsmithing. Who needs TV when you can cut metal! My wife has taken oil painting classes with great instructors. I’ve taken classes in enameling and ceramics.

South Waterfront Greenway: Project Update By: Elizabeth Kennedy-Wong (Community Outreach Manager) and Allison Rouse (Project Manager)

The second greenspace in the South Waterfront is coming close to completing its initial phase of implementation. In this phase, the upland habitat and bank stabilization was the focus. The bank was stabilized using “vault walls”, u-shaped boxes in two rows, anchored to the bank and filled with dirt and planted, in addition to gabions, the stone/concrete filled wire “bricks”. Extensive excavation removed much of the debris that has been dumped on the site over the past 100+ years. Clean top soil and native plantings will complete the restoration. A challenge to this project was the unusually high water levels in the Willamette River. While we had hoped to create a beach and river access in this phase, the river didn’t cooperate. The intention is to complete the

remainder of this project next year, when the water levels drop (keep your fingers crossed).

Why is Sprout Unique? What is a Green Preschool?

Sprout Academy is a certified Eco-Healthy school by the Oregon Environmental Council. Our classroom passed a 30-point checklist that evaluated the paint on the walls, the cleaning products we use, the educational materials on the shelves, and more demonstrating that the space meets the OEC’s requirements for certification. The Sprout Academy is a safe place for your child to learn & play. In addition to the physical space being Eco-Healthy, instructors lead by example and teach students the importance of reducing, reusing, repurposing & recycling. We are outdoors as much as possible taking the children through the park to learn how everything is connected and why the environment matters to each of us! We have our own community garden plot as a second classroom in warmer weather. Children learn simple concepts of sustainability and how we can each do our part. You might find your little Sprout teaching you, too!

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide.

How it Works

First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support the participant & accommodate their individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (MondayFriday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

With 3 years of TKD classes at SWCC, I am thrilled with the confidence, focus, grace, discipline and dignity that the class has instilled in my daughter Rowan, age 8. They don’t just focus on TKD but also grades, and how to be a helpful, respectful part of society. Rowan’s favorite part of class is learning her new forms. ~ Cole Budlong

Lane lines divide lap lanes. Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway lap lanes may become crowded, at these times “circle swimming” is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmer’s speed: slow, medium, and fast. Look at the yellow markers at the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane.

General Fund support for the operation of Hillside Community Center budget was eliminated as of July 1, 2012. Thanks to the guidance and collaboration with the Hillside community, this facility will continue to operate without funding support through the implementation of a surcharge fee of 15% on all classes and 20% on rentals. This premium fee will fill the gap left by the budget funding cut. Fees listed in this brochure have been calculated to include the added surcharge. If you have questions, or would like more information regarding this operation change, please contact Hillside Community Center’s Director, Tim Hammock, at 503-823-3181. Portland Parks and Recreation greatly appreciates the generous support and guidance of Hillside’s patrons, neighbors and neighborhood association through this budget process.
