Peninsula Park and Rose Garden Celebrate 100 Years in 2013
Peninsula Park, home of Portland’s first public rose garden, is turning 100 years old in 2013. Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden, in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation and Portland Parks Foundation, are set to launch a brand new beginning in time for next year’s bloom season. This past fall, roses on the floor of the garden were removed and will be replaced by approximately 3,000 donated roses in February 2013. The existing roses, planted about 25 years ago, were deteriorating and showing signs of stress. PP&R was recently presented with an outstanding opportunity to obtain new donated roses valued at more than $75,000. The new plants will be healthier, disease-resistant types that require low pesticide use and offer easier maintenance. To ensure the garden remains true to the original design, the new bloomers will include hybrid teas, floribunda, grandiflora and climbers. PP&R and volunteer teams will start bed preparation soon after the removal phase and then begin final design and planting activities during January and February. The Friends group has also raised funds for a new interpretive sign to be placed at the garden’s entrance. The sign is in production now, with a dedication ceremony planned for June. If you have an interest in volunteering with rose removal or planting, please contact: Steve.Pixley@portlandoregon.gov or penrosegarden@gmail.com You may also support the garden through a tax-deductible contribution. Make checks payable to Portland Parks Foundation, memo to Peninsula Park Rose Garden, and mail to Portland Parks Foundation, 111 SW Oak Street, Suite 400, Portland, OR 97204. Online donations can be made at portlandparksfoundation.org, or contact Friends of Peninsula Park Rose Garden at penrosegarden@gmail.com for more information.

Portland Parks & Recreation - Winter 2013
Educational Preschools Each of our four Community Centers offer an educational preschool program.
Registration for the 2013-2014 School Year begins Friday March 1st for returning families and Friday March 15th for open enrollment. Check out each community center section for more specific information on neighborhood preschool programs.
Our Educational Preschool Programs are all based on the philosophy that children learn through play, by exploring & manipulating their environment. The goal of our programs is to provide opportunities for children to develop & grow at their own rate. To enhance this experience, our classrooms are set up in learning centers that enable children to explore different areas of development, such as fine motor, socialization, pre-math, p re-reading & listening skills. All of our programs run concurrently with the Portland Public Schools’ calendar. Child must be potty trained & meet the minimum age required for each specific class by September 1st. Once registered, it is assumed your child will remain with the program for the entire school year. For more information on specific programs or to register, please contact the individual site.

North Portland Recreational Leagues Now Forming! The community centers of North Portland are now working in collaboration to offer youth athletic leagues for both Basketball and Soccer. Practices will take place at your local community centers and all games will be held at the Charles Jordan Community Center. These non-competitive athletic leagues for both boys and girls emphasize participation, safety, and fun. Scores and standings are not kept with emphasis placed on sportsmanship and skill development. Our leagues are dependent on community involvement and we encourage participants’ parents and guardians to be positively involved with their child’s respective league. Practice times differ from site to site and are subject to facility and coaching availability. Please contact your local community center to register your child and inquire about volunteer coach opportunities.
Basketball -KBA Positive Play League age: 7-10 Dribble, Pass, Shoot & Score. It’s a bucket! Build confidence & self-esteem in this non-competitive, entry level league in a safe environment. 2013-2014 Educational Preschool Program The Matt Dishman Early Childhood Education Program includes our Preschool (3-4 year olds) and Pre-Kindergarten (4-5 year olds) classes. These programs run September - May with students typically starting in September. Children must be the proper age by September 1, 2012 to be eligible. Our program follows a developmental philosophy that children develop and grow at their own rate. To enhance the learning experience, our programs feature learning stations that enable children to explore different areas of development. Occasionally, we have mid-year openings. For specific information on our preschool program or to register your child, please call Matt Dishman CC at 503823-3673. The non-refundable materials fee for the 20122013 school year is $60, which will be split into two equal $30 payments. The first payment is due at initial registration & will be used to secure your child’s spot for the school year. The second payment is due with the Feb. 2013 monthly tuition payment.

All lessons take place in the shallow bay of the Matt Dishman pool, beginning in October. Students attend a thirty-minute lesson 1 day per week during their scheduled class time and lessons are subject to re-scheduling due to aquatic & class scheduling needs.

Portland Parks & Recreation - Winter 2013 Winter & Spring Break Camps We ask that campers wear comfortable shoes & clothing each day as they will be active. Each camper should bring a healthy lunch, 2 healthy snacks, swimsuit, towel, water bottle. Drop-off & pick-up will be in the game room each day. For your child’s safety, parents/guardians are required to sign their child in at the beginning of each day and sign them out at the end of the day. This is a great opportunity to check in with counselors about what is happening for the day and also double checking that everything went smoothly during the day. Please allow an extra 10 or 15 minutes on the first day, to complete a Camper Registration Form.
Structure & Variety
We include a variety of activities to keep young minds and bodies active and challenged. Free choice and relaxation time provides a chance to enjoy low-key activities between more in-depth, structured projects and games. All children are encouraged to participate, but never forced. Field trips to natural areas, recreation sites, and cultural centers are fun learning experiences. We create an environment that is structured and supportive, but also fun and flexible.
Staff & Safety
Payment
Payment is due prior to the camp start date. You may pay the entire balance at the time of registration, or you can pay a down payment of $10 per week and schedule your payments to be due Monday prior to the camp’s start date.
Registration
Safety is our number one priority. We hire highly skilled, energetic, and caring people who truly love working with children. All of our staff are First Aid and CPR certified, and must pass a background check.
Camps fill quickly, so register early. If you need to withdraw, a full refund will only be issued if the notice is given by noon on the Friday before camp starts. Prorated refunds will be given after that. Withdrawals made less than three days in advance will be assessed a $15 withdrawal fee.

Kelly teaches dance and gymnastics classes to students ages 1- adult at East Portland, Montavilla, and now here at Dishman Community Center. You will also see her dancing with various groups here in Portland, including Blue Sky Ensemble. Kelly holds a B.F.A in dance from The University of Montana, where her endeavors included performing at the Kennedy Center in the National American College Dance Festival’s gala concert with “Prey,” choreographed by Bebe Miller. Her training includes modern, improvisation, ballet, jazz, gymnastics, yoga, and tap. Kelly’s most recent project is a show of her own choreography, currently in the rehearsal process. Kelly’s teaching style focuses on individuality (after all, everybody is made differently), and joy in movement, while gaining body awareness. One of her goals is to help tap into the natural flow in our bodies. Fair warning, she has been known to re-teach adults how to do cartwheels!

Portland Parks & Recreation - Winter 2013
Dance • Theatre • Music The Peninsula Performing Arts Academy provides a variety of choices of performance arts to all ages! Our Academy focuses on three mediums: Theatre, Dance & Music.
6 months - 4 years
For the youngest participants we have our “Exploring Movement” classes. These classes are designed to engage parents & children in a positive, fun & active experience. If you & your child are interested in music, be sure to check-out our “Music - Exploring Together!” course located with the Music Program.
3 years - 6 years
At age 3, children are eligible to join our progression based educational arts programs. Students ages 3-6 can work on their balance & coordination with our Level I dance classes. These courses are traditionally some of our most popular courses and they focus on the introduction to various dance mediums, including: creative movement, ballet, tap, and hip-hop.
6 years - 14 years
Students can further develop their dance technique in ballet, tap, or hip-hop. Through our Theater program, students can participate in a performing piece that integrates vocal music, dance and theatre arts. The “American Musical Showcase” class is an interactive and popular program that performs well-known Broadway shows quarterly. Students enrolled in most Level I dance programs or above will participate alongside the theater students to make the show truly the culminating center of the performing arts academy. Children may repeat our classes as new concepts & materials will continue to be introduced. At age 6, students can enroll for private guitar, piano, violin, or vocal lessons held weekly at Peninsula at an incredible value.
14 years & up
For our students who are 14 & up, we offer a variety of courses in every category. Classes include: Guitar, Ballet, Tap and Theatre. In addition the center offers a wide variety of adult fitness courses and courses designed for both parent & child to attend.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Dance • Theatre • Music Meet our Performing Arts Team! Sandy Shaner has been a director, choreographer, performer and more for over 35 years. She has produced and directed for the Oregon Symphony, as well as been the Artistic Director for the former “Peanut Gallery Theatre”. After receiving training at Portland State University and Portland Community College, Sandy has taught dance, theatre, and infant classes throughout the Portland-Metro area. She continues her education at PSU as a Psychology Major and plans to continue her love of the arts after completing her degree. Mara Cogswell has been dancing with Portland Parks & Rec since she was 4 years old and took a “Mommy and Me” ballet class. She studied in the extensive youth training program and performed with the p re-professional company “Metro Dancers”. Mara began teaching ballet in the community school programs run by PP&R when she was in high school. Her studies continued at the University of Oregon where she performed in both classical dance concerts and musical theater productions. Mara still performs with PP&Rs “Laurelhurst Dancers”.
Norah Zaharakis has been an active member in theatre as both a student and teacher for the past fifteen years. She studied vocal music & theatre at Humbolt State University in California. Some of her most recent e xperiences are volunteering with the Portland Theatre Brigade and interning at the Pendleton Story Theatre Workshop. Welcome to the team, Norah! Carlos Lasuncet moved to North Portland from Los Angeles in 2007. He brought with him years of music experience from working in recording studios and performance venues. He is a dedicated educator, working at Open Meadow Middle School as a science and music teacher. He enjoys any opportunity to share his knowledge and lifelong passion for music with children, and hopes to inspire young students to learn how to express themselves though music. Noah Kite has been in a turbulent relationship with the guitar since he was eleven. He didn’t realize it then, but that black and cream Stratocaster knock-off his mother purchased him over a decade ago was a bridge so vast it stretched beyond any horizon his kid mind could conceive. As the years progressed this slowly became evident studying with a number of other musicians and performing around Portland in a variety of bands. When he takes the time to reflect on how it helped him to flesh out his ideas it’s clear that the skills and concepts he developed expanded far beyond the framework of music. Now almost finished with his bachelors in psychology, he understands the full value of an artistic outlet and enjoys imparting the tools that develop into an enriching creative experience and more. Welcome Noah! Linda Chace is an active performer, she is a singer and guitarist and performed folk music for many years all over the west coast. She has performed in many musical theatrical productions including, “Anything Goes”, “Where’s Charli”, “Westside Story”, “Cabaret”, “Finians Rainbow”, “Amahle and the Night Vistors” and many more! Linda performs gigs with her two children, Laura and Alec throughout Portland. Linda has directed both “Suessical Junior” and “Alice in Wonderland Junior” with Peninsula Park Community Center and we are glad to have her back again this Summer. Haley Maddox is a native Portlander who has a background in musical theatre and jazz. She is currently studying voice at Portland State University and has sung in many ensembles. She was on the Cleveland High School Sundancers dance team for four years.
Laura Chace is an accomplished singer, guitarist and song-writer who performs often in the Portland area. She has been invvolved in numerous musical theatrical productions including “Honk”, “Bye Bye Birdie” , “In a Different Light” and numerous others. She was the founder of one of the first women’s teen accapella groups in her high school. She has traveled extensively to Africa, India, Austrillia, and New Zealand and incorporates musical and dance styles of those countries into her music and performances.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works
First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support the participant & accommodate their individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant. Register On-Line at www.PortlandParks.org 71
