Noticeboard Literacy Corner

Currently in GCSE English specification ‘Candidates must use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. (This requirement must constitute 20% of the marks for each specification as a whole).’

The focus in September therefore will be on punctuation. We would like to Exclamation Mark Shows interjection/surprise/str ong emotion ~ What a triumph! ~ I’ve just about had enough! ~ Wonderful! Ellipsis ~ Indicate that a word/words have been left out in formal speech – when you are writing a report and only want to include the most important bits . ~ Can be used to show character – perhaps nervous so stuttering, or trailing off at the end of speech: “Please ... stop it ... don’t ...!”

~ can be used to add tension or leave the reader on a cliff hanger – duh, duh, duuuuh...

remind everyone use of punctation mark with our punctuation face: Semi-Colon ~ Connects two independent clauses to show thoughts on either side of it that are balanced and connected: The ice cream truck man drove by my house today; he was wearing a Santa hat!

Your 3 per week

~ Can also separate words or items within the list: My favourite acts included Ben, a fantastic juggler; Jonathan, a daring fireater; and Gina, who gave us her best Simon Cowell impression.

News Enrichment Photography Week 1 Students involved in photography club produced some exciting and well-considered outcomes this week after studying the work of German photographer, Karl Blossfeldt. The focus of the session involved black and white close-up photography, looking at how angles, perspective and interesting lighting can make organic or man-made objects appear structural, or even architectural, in terms of aesthetic. Students from Years 9, 10 and 11 worked together to direct and help set up the shot, before digitally editing and making changes to their selection of final photos.

News Photography Week 2 Some spooky goings-on in the Art Department this week for Photography enrichment club, as students drew inspiration from Renaissance paintings and Victorian-era portraiture to inspire their photography. Students from Years 9 to 11 worked in pairs to use costume, backdrops, and natural window lighting to then direct each other in classic portrait poses, producing a range of haunting images. They then used Pro-create to overlay their photographs of pumpkins or skulls to develop some eerie portraits which would not be out of place in the halls of Hogwarts.

Keep a look out for these portraits later on in the term , over in PPS!

News Enrichment West End Musical Theatre Introduction to West End theatre workshops by Helen Colby, workshop leader This term we will be delving into the world of Musical Theatre with industry professional Helen Colby. A taster of triple threat training in (socially distanced) acting, singing and dancing. Students should not be scared of hard work, but with that hard work comes the freedom of expression which is rewarding, fun and fabulous. We will use exerts from original west end scripts and choreography to create our own piece of musical Theatre magic, after all there’s no business like show business!

News My West End theatre introduction experience by Georgie Cox So far we have had two sessions of west end theatre and both have been absolutely amazing! On the first week we started off focusing on acting. First of all, Helen our workshop leader gave us some fun warmingup games to try to get to know each other. As we were feeling more confident and we knew each other

better, Helen gave us scripts from the play Matilda. We chose our parts; I was Miss Trunchbull! We had lots of fun practicing and getting lots of tips from Helen. When we finished we performed our scenes to each other which was so fun! In the second week we were focusing on dance which we were all very excited about! We got straight into it by listening to the song we were dancing to, revolting children from the musical Matilda, we all really liked it so Helen started teaching us the original choreography from the actual musical! We were all very tired by the end of learning it but it was so much fun! It made my day! We performed it to the other

My West End theatre introduction experience by Olivia Solomu In Musical theatre it is very fun as we can express our drama skills and act out of the box. So far my favourite part is the dancing choreography to ‘revolting children’ as it is very energetic and fun. Helen our drama teacher is very supportive and funny as she motivates us to do our best in acting. In my opinion all kids would enjoy musical theatre as it is not just acting, it’s also becoming a completely new person and you also get to dance to amazing choreography.

News Enrichment LEGO Design Club

This week, LEGO Design Club convened on a build challenge – to build and demo an existing LEGO creation and showcase it through photography! The groups worked in (socially distanced!) pairs in the Hall and developed some amazing images with the help and guidance of Kieran, Eleonora, William and Amitis in Years 10 and 11.

I would also like to thank Mr Derek Hill for joining us and providing energy, enthusiasm and creative insight for our session.

News Library Library Updates Our library has re-opened and is operating as safely as possible within the Covid guidelines. Mrs Carvalho has returned from maternity leave and is in the library Monday – Thursdays. Our reading lessons are currently being spent in the classroom and the librarian comes up to assist. Students can change their books in the library in small groups and are assisted to do so safely. There is capacity for seven students in the library at any given time and study spaces are safely spaced out within 1 metre. Students are still welcome to come in before and after school. Library overdues went out this week, so please remind your child to check their email and return any library books that might be still be at home since last March. Returned books are quarantined for the recommended 72 hours. Enhanced cleaning of surfaces and the library space are in operation. Students can access our virtual library on Firefly for links to our library catalogue, e-book platform and more: https://portlandplace.fireflycloud.net/library/virtual-library

Library News & Resources September 2020

Banned Books Week - September 27 – October 3 https://bannedbooksweek.org/ Banned Books Week takes place annually each September since 1982 and promotes the fact that many books are challenged and restricted around the world. This year’s theme is “Censorship is a dead end. Find your freedom to read!” Students love finding out why books that we routinely have in our school library are banned in other places around the world. Some of our library books are on this this year’s most challenged books list: Drama by Raina Telgemeier https://tinyurl.com/y4lc4hrj George by Alex Gino https://tinyurl.com/y4av9lfe

News Art Here is a piece by Harry Powers in Year 9 from a painting by Constable. The aim was to use texture and 6, 000,000 shades of grey to replace colour.

News English as an Additional Language Following the planning that the EAL students did last week where they used mind maps to record their ideas, this week they structured those ideas into sentences and paragraphs. Below is Hazuki Kita's work (Year 7). Well done, Hazuki, for your determination to succeed and improve your language skills. I am very proud of you! It is the end of Year 7... This year has gone quickly, and I am very proud of everything I have achieved. I feel I did well overall, but my results were particularly good in History, English, and Geography. In addition, I learnt a few new tricks in tennis. In English, I developed my literacy skills and now I know how to use full stops and capital letters correctly.

Moreover, I improved my vocabulary and was able to participate fully in lessons. This made me feel more confident as I could express myself better in speaking and in writing. In History, I improved my ability to explain how and why certain events happened. Furthermore, I became better at giving an opinion about different historic events. Also, I have learnt many new words related to

History which helped me complete my classwork to a higher standard. I feel I have made a lot of progress since last year when my understanding of English was limited. In Geography, I spent a lot of time revising for my tests and in the end my work paid off. Also, I learnt a lot of geographical terms. Furthermore, I became more confident at recognising different country flags.

In conclusion, I feel that my Year 7 has gone well, and I feel grateful for all the things I have learnt this year.

Miss Florea

Sports report A massive well done to all our pupils this week for their fantastic efforts in PE and Games. Fitness training lessons have been happening on Regents’ Park, with our pupils focusing on testing and improvement of speed and agility. We have seen some tremendous times for the 30m sprint tests and the Illinois agility test. We’ll look to collate and share some of the best times later this term, once all our pupils have completed the tests.

Sports report Sports Clubs Football club will be starting next week, and all pupils are welcome to attend. We will be busing out to the Regents Park junior pitch straight after school and will aim to be back at school by 5.10pm. Pupils will need to bring normal football kit including studs and shin pads.
