Land’s End to John O’Groats House Challenge
Noticeboard
Do you like writing creatively in your spare time? Every week, the English department will post a creative writing task on Firefly (Go to Resources > English > Creative Writing tab on the left). All completed entries should be sent to your English teacher and points will be awarded for your efforts and imagination. By February half term we will decide on the best piece of creative writing and you will be awarded a prize!
Noticeboard The English Department’s Shakespeare Broadcasts
The English Department has proudly acquired weekly tickets for an outstanding new event: Michael Morpurgo’s: Tales from Shakespeare. Celebrated author, Michael Morpurgo, has joined the RSC to create these stories. For five weeks, his
fresh retellings will be broadcast live for Key Stage 3 PPS students at 11.00am on Fridays. With a range of titles, these performances are suitable for all our key stage 3 students and feature Morpurgo himself, as well as members of the RSC Acting Company. The schedule is as follows:
Michael Morpurgo’s The Tempest Friday 15 January 11.00am Michael Morpurgo’s Romeo and Juliet Friday 22 January 11.00am Michael Morpurgo’s Macbeth Friday 29 January 11.00am Michael Morpurgo’s The Winter's Tale Friday 05 February 11.00am
Every Thursday, the English Department will send a link to every Year 7-9 student for the Friday broadcast via Firefly. Students will also be sent a separate link to access the show after it has been live-streamed, so they do not miss any scheduled lessons and still get to enjoy this opportunity. For any more information, contact your English teacher.

Noticeboard English as an Additional Language I hope you all had a lovely and restful holiday. This week I wanted to share with you the first Action for Happiness calendar of this year. It has got a lot of ideas of lovely things to do every day of this month. I’ve had many insightful conversations with my students this week about some of the tasks and one idea that stood out was the importance of self-care, especially during this time. I wish you all a better 2021! Thank you for your support, Miss Florea

Noticeboard Library—Book of the Week
If you are in Year 9 or above and
are looking for a novel that you can’t put down to pass the boring hours in lockdown, I really recommend this gripping murder mystery by Holly Jackson. Beautiful, popular Sixth form student Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, or was she? A few years later, Pip decides to focus on the investigation for her EPQ project and all is not what it seems. Who really killed Andie?

News Year 11 Poetry An Ode Ping! A blue light flashes
Anticipation, bliss awaiting. Through dreary eyes I see A stream cascading, A gleaming smile Air thick, its smoky aroma; I inhale.
Its swirling murky surface makes life worthwhile.
Heart-warming. I proclaim its sublimity.
I savour one sip. How can idolatry be immoral! From here on I decree, In the morning, we all need a cup of coffee!

News Sit alone and cry
Every night I sit alone and cry for a world where everyone is free, Without oppression or discrimination, A world where people like her and me, Can kiss without hesitation.
Every night I sit alone and cry for a world where people don’t hide behind the word opinions, To excuse their unforgiving hatred for constructs like gender, A world where politicians don’t have loyal forces of military minions, Whose pride is so large they refuse to surrender.
Every night I sit alone and cry for a world where colour couldn’t create your fate, Or dominate your existence, A world where terrorists were locked up and protesters weren’t fed meaningless bait, Only created to give the warhogs more assistance.
Imagine a world where liberty and freedom were not just empty lies, Where only the monsters would sit alone and cry.
Marnie Wilkins
News Art Year 7 were shading boxes in primary secondary colours each matching with complementary colour. This by Georgie Cox.
News
Year 8 did a study of one of Redon’s pieces, one called Eye Balloon, the other The Guardian of the Sea. Redon fought in the Franco Prussian war and couldn’t use colour for years. This by Luke Ahrens.
News Music We are delighted to announce that Jemima Frances Hyam (Year 9) has made it through to the Final of the ISA Young Musician Competition 2021 with her performance from the Christmas Concert on violin. We wish her all the best for the final early next month.
Congratulations! Mr S. Hill - Director of Music
News English as an Additional Language This week is about our Year 6 students: Mia, Susan, Fritzi and Daniil who do not cease to impress me with their enthusiasm, hard work and creativity. We have recently discussed the importance of recognising the things we are good at and how that can boost our self-confidence. Well done Mia, Susan, Fritzi and Daniil!
Sports report Land’s End to John O’Groats House Challenge
Most of our pupils have now joined their year group and house team Strava clubs and their activity is now going towards their house team totals. There have been some fantastic efforts over the first two weeks, with a few pupils really excelling themselves. A special mention must go to Martin Ris in year 7 who has
single-handedly added 34.91km of running distance to Cavendish’s total! This is more than any other pupil in the school! The Cavendish Year 6 and 7 team have completed more total kilometres than any other team in the school and currently have 111.21km of the 970km completed.
Sports report
Here are the current standings for each year group. Remember that you can achieve distance through walking, running, cycling, scooting (not electric!), rowing etc. You can also log activity using a manual entry if, for example, you have completed a walk or run without your phone on you. A dozen laps of the garden, or a quick walk with the dog all count, so make sure you log as much activity as you can. Keep up the good work! Year 6 & 7
