HEAD COACH GIOVANNI SAVARESE In his first season with the club, Giovanni Savarese led the Timbers to 15 regularseason wins in 2018, tied for the third-most victories for a first-year head coach in MLS history. Under Savarese’s guidance, the Timbers won their second Western Conference Championship and advanced to their second MLS Cup in 2018. Receiving a first-half brace from Brian Fernandez, the Portland Timbers concluded their MLS-record stretch of 12 consecutive road games with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union in front of 18,474 fans at Talen Energy Stadium on May 25. Fernandez increased his season total to three goals in his first two games, while Diego Valeri recorded his third goal of the season and added his team-leading seventh assist.

Key plays In the third minute, Jorge Villafaña’s cross from the left flank found Jeremy Ebobisse running towards goal, but his leaping header forced Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake into a diving save. On Valeri’s ensuing corner kick, Larrys Mabiala’s towering header was caught by Blake. The Timbers took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when Andy Polo received a pass down the right side of the penalty area. Looking up, Polo floated in a cross at the back post to Fernandez, who powered his header from the left side of the six-yard box into the back of the net. Portland doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute off a precise counter-attacking play that started from Diego Chara dispossessing a Philadelphia player at midfield. Valeri picked up the ball just outside the 18-yard box, playing a low pass to Chara racing towards the left side of the penalty area. Chara then cut the ball back into the path of Fernandez, whose right-footed shot from the middle of the box was placed into the empty net. The Union cut into the Timbers lead to begin the second half when Fafa Picault’s shot from inside the six-yard box was fired off the post and rolled just over the goal line to make it 2-1. In the 63rd minute, goalkeeper Steve Clark made a critical stop to deny Picault at point-blank range. Haris Medunjanin served a ball into the center of the box and Picault directed a header on goal from close range, forcing Clark to react and make the save. Clark made another save less than 10 minutes, diving to his right in the 71st minute to make a diving stop on a shot by Alejandro Bedoya. The Timbers increased their lead to 3-1 in the 87th minute as Valeri recorded his third goal of the season. Building from the back and completing a series of passes, Valeri played the ball to Blanco near the edge of box and Blanco played it directly back to Valeri, who curled a perfect strike into the bottom right corner of the goal.

EXTENDED ROAD TRIP After defeating the Philadelphia Union 3-1 at Talen Energy Stadium on May 25, the Timbers concluded the longest stretch of road games (12) for any team in MLS history, as construction work was completed at Providence Park. The club invested more than $85 million in private funding for an ambitious project that transformed Providence Park and added more than 4,000 new seats to raise the capacity to more than 25,000. Moreover, the significant investment represents a complete relaunch of the historic stadium, as the project includes extensive enhancements to the entire venue, including: a massive, state-of-the-art video board/scoreboard that measures more than two times bigger than the previous board, new LED field lighting, new locker rooms for both the Timbers and Thorns FC, a new team store, new and refreshed concession stands and concourse amenities on the west side of the stadium and additional ingress/egress gates.

WILLIAMSON CALLED INTO CAMP WITH USMNT Portland Timbers midfielder Eryk Williamson has been called into a combined preparation camp with players from the U.S. Senior and U-23 Men’s National Teams from May 26-June 2 in Annapolis, Md. Williamson will be part of the U-23 squad that will be training with the Senior National Team. The Alexandra, Va., native, who was previously called into a U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team international camp in March, has tallied two goals and a USL Championship-leading seven assists in nine appearances for T2, while on loan from the Timbers in 2019.

POLO NAMED TO PERU’S COPA AMÉRICA ROSTER Andy Polo will represent the Portland Timbers at the CONMEBOL Copa América Brazil 2019 this summer, with the midfielder being named to the final 23-man roster for Peru. Polo’s inclusion marks the second time that he is called up to play with Peru in the continental tournament. Since making his senior team debut in 2016, Polo, 24, has earned 20 caps for Peru. Last year, Polo represented Peru in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

70/70 CLUB With his game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on May 4, Diego Valeri tallied his 70th career goal for the Timbers in regular-season play. With the goal, Valeri became the ninth player in MLS history to record at least 70 goals and 70 assists. He is the only active player in the league and the first player who debuted in MLS after the 2001 season to reach this mark. Valeri joins Landon Donovan, Steve Ralston, Preki, Jaime Moreno, Cobi Jones, Dwayne De Rosario, Jason Kreis and Jeff Cunningham as the only players to reach the 70 goals and 70 assists mark in regular-season competition.

CHANCE CREATORS Through 12 matches played during the 2019 MLS regular season, the Portland Timbers rank tied for ninth in the league in chances created (119). Midfielder Diego Valeri’s 44 chances created ranks second in MLS behind LAFC midfielder Carlos Vela (45). Midfielder Sebastián Blanco ranks ninth in the league with 28 chances created.
