From the desk of Doug Bolton
Our neighbor came over the other day to tell us he was going to have a company do some trimming on their property. He was being a good neighbor and wanted to walk the property line with us to make sure we agreed with what should be cut. Tonyia and I thought we should have our trees and hedges done at the same time, so we had the same discussion with our other neighbor and asked for pricing. Well . . . the government may think inflation is low but the tree companies have another idea. The price quoted was about three times what we had paid to do a similar job seven years ago. My wife decided we would pay the company to trim the oaks, but we would do the hedges, palms and rest of the yard. So we started cutting and hauling to the recycling center. We are so blessed to have that center; I don’t know what we would do without it. At the time of this writing we have hauled 15 pickup truck loads of yard clippings and leaves. Our arms are scratched, bruised, and my neck is a bit stiff from falling off the ladder. Thankfully the bugs find my wife much sweeter tasting, as I didn’t get a single bite. We worked side by side for a week; the weather was great, and we are still talking to each other. The Plantation has spent a great deal of money and time cleaning up the majority of our visible community property. There is much more that could be done but, not unlike the town, we have run short of funds. The vast majority of our properties are “back to normal” after the storms. I want to thank the staff and our landowners for all the hard work to restore the property. Finally, I want to welcome Scott Kunkle, our new Director of Maintenance. Scott and his family are moving here from Western Pennsylvania. Soooo Scott, Welcome to the Jungle!

Current Items: ● Back filling and compacting the area for the Kiddie Pool ● Beach House Piling - 75% completed ● Rough electrical and plumbing in the Bath House ● Grading around Kiddie Pool and Bath House ● In Progress: ● Bath House – selection of materials and hardware’s; exterior siding, windows and doors installation; spray foam insulation; install concrete flooring. ● Kiddie Pool – Dig the foundation for the Kiddie Pool Structure and install plumbing ● Beach House – Dig foundation, install rebar structural supports, pour foundation and begin the installation of the foundation walls. Drainage The Town drainage project continues to make progress along the main channel. The contractor has completed about 50% of the roughly 2 miles of drainage channels. As part of the project, the contractor will be accessing areas owned by the golf course but are adjacent to Landowner property. In some cases, the contractor may cross over private property to avoid a tree or plant material. The Town will not replace landscaping planted in these areas, but they will do their best to restore turf with hydro seeding in areas where turf currently exists. The staff recognizes this is major inconvenience; however, this process is necessary to maintain the channel for positive drainage. If you have questions regarding the areas located along the main channel that backs up to your property and like would additional information, please contact Scott Kunkle, Director of Maintenance.

New Vehicle Decals Thank you to the Landowners that turned out on February 17th, our first Saturday vehicle decal distribution day. We distributed approximately 500 vehicle decals. Saturdays decal pick up were put in place so that Landowners would not have to wait for in long lines with contractors on week days. We will have two more Saturdays, March 10th and March 24th. If those dates do not work with your schedule, you may come to the Administration Office during the week between 1:00pm and 4:30pm. We have simplified the process by having your information pre-printed and ready for you to
make any necessary changes. Please bring your driver’s license, proof of insurance and the registration for each vehicle you own. Decals will not be issued with incomplete information. Renters, regardless of their lease expiration date, must also renew their passes. New decals will be required for all vehicles entering the Plantation beginning April 1, 2018. If you are a part-time resident and will not be able to renew your pass prior to that date, you may email copies of the required documents to frontdesk@portroyalplantation.net. You may also renew your pass when you return. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Director of Security, Rob Wilkinson at security@portroyalplantation.net or by phone at 843-681-5114 x211.
A Friendly Reminder Already this year, we have had several leash law violations. Please remember that not leashing your pet on common property is not only against our Rules and Procedures, but is also against state law. This also applies to the golf course and cart paths. With spring time coming up, alligators and other animals that could be dangerous to your pet will be more active. Please be careful with your pets, and make sure that they are leashed when off your property. Page 5

New Challenges As I finish my first month here at Port Royal, I want to thank the many people who have welcomed me. I am enjoying the weather here much more than the weather in Pittsburgh! I look forward to working for this community and all of the Landowners. I have been learning and taking in as much information as I can about my responsibilities, the property and everything that goes with the job. One of the first tasks is understanding the Landscape Contractor Agreement and their performance. Unfortunately, I see quite a few things that need corrective action. The condition and appearance of many areas throughout the Plantation need attention, and it starts with services being provided by the contractor. Some of the unsatisfactory areas
include weeds in the beds, lawns, and common areas. Also, there are debris and limbs that keep falling throughout the community and require daily attention. I am working with Lance to explore some different options with the goal to get ahead of the conditions before we enter the heavy growing season. As I grow into the position, I would appreciate your patience as we work through some of these early challenges. There is a lot of work to be accomplished and we will get started on it right away. The Maintenance Staff has been, and will continue to be, taking care of issues throughout the community. If there is something that needs to be addressed, please click here to complete the online work order. The staff continues to perform routine work on mailboxes, repairing some split rail fence sections, signage and normal clean up.
Fish Haul Farmers First, a huge “thank you” to Frank Moriarty who has been our Fish Haul Farm President for the last two years. The enthusiasm and activity of the “farmers” has grown enormously as a result of Frank’s generous gift of time and knowledge. I’m sure you will all have noticed the buds in the trees and shrubs, and also the pollen dropping! It feels as though we have turned a corner and that cold weather in early January is a distant event. Now is the time to remove any damaged vegetation, and an opportunity to consider whether to replace what has been lost, or whether to plant something new and vibrant. The same is true of our vegetable gardens. Some plants like broccoli, kale

and brussel sprouts have tolerated the cold snap, and now is the time to think about the season ahead and consider what to grow. Seed packets are now available and seedlings are typically started six weeks prior to planting into the warmer soil; the official date of last frost in the low country is March 15th. Local nurseries and garden centers will typically begin to have plants available during March if you want to minimize the risk of losing any early seedlings. If you have an interest in gardening, you should consider renting a plot at our Community Garden – Fish Haul Farm. Spring is coming soon and with it comes spring fever! It’s a good time to think about tackling some projects around the house. Have you thought about adding a screened porch to your home, or perhaps a pool? Maybe your landscaping didn’t fare well after the cold snap and snow and you want to re-landscape your property. Or maybe you want to make a nice outdoor living area to entertain guests. The ideas are endless! Don’t forget that we have the plans for most of the homes in Port Royal and I can email them to you or put them on a disk for you. Feel free to contact me to request a copy of your plans. They might come in handy if you decide to do something exciting to your property! Just give me a call or email me at pab@portroyalplantation.net and I’ll be happy to help you!

2017 Audubon Bird Count On December 15, 2017 Port Royal Plantation participated in the Annual International Audubon Christmas Bird Count. The count for Port Royal was good considering the poor weather. Total bird count was 1,892 with 87 different species. This compares with 2016’s count of 2,361 birds with 68 species. The 2016 count was high due to a single sighting of 665 semipalmated plovers. The field team roaming beaches, neighborhoods and golf courses were: Marie McClune, Doug Waldrop, Lynn Hodgson, Brad Simpson, Gail Poulik, Art Tonkinson, Dave Lovett, and Carol Jorgensen. The feeder/backyard counters were: Dottie Bass, Jamie Evans, Mary Sinnett, Tim and Lisa Roy, Nancy Simpson, Tom Rigney and Susan Roesch. A special thank you to all the volunteers who made our count a success. If you would like to participate with this year’s count on Friday, December 14, 2018, please contact Art Tonkinson at 843-681-8117. It is a one-day commitment for the field volunteers, and about one or two hours for feeder/backyard counters.
