Dear Portsmouth Abbey Community,
The campus is buzzing with excitement and energy as the 2024-25 school year is off to a strong start. We’ve warmly welcomed 114 new students, along with several outstanding faculty and administrators who all bring their unique gifts and talents to our community. This year promises growth in knowledge and grace, reinforcing our strong sense of community and mission at Portsmouth Abbey School.
This past school year saw the completion of two much-anticipated additions to campus: the new entrance at the top of Cory’s Lane and the new Student Center. The entrance features two stone walls, one on each side of Cory’s Lane, proudly announcing “PORTSMOUTH ABBEY/MONASTERY AND SCHOOL” on two lines. Both also include smaller plaques displaying the crests for the monastery, the School and our neighbor St. Philomena School on the walls’ main column. The walls are complemented by two rows of beautiful Red Sunset Maple trees lining the roadside to the corn and hay fields that complete the bucolic welcome to the School.
Nestled at the top of RavensQuad, the new Student Center invites students from every corner of campus, boarding or day, to gather in this splendid building. Offering a large communal gathering space, conference rooms, a fire pit, a full-service grill (the new Tuck Shop!), table tennis and foosball, it is a stunning addition and will be the social hub of campus. The old student center will be transformed into a new home for our music department over the next few years.
In addition to these capital improvements, support of the Annual Fund continues to grow. As a result of your generosity, we surpassed our Annual Fund goal for the 11th year in a row and raised an astonishing $2,045,367 in support of our students, faculty and programs. We are humbled by your commitment to Portsmouth Abbey School which allows us to better serve our students and fulfill our mission of helping young men and women grow in knowledge and grace. Paul B. Baisley ’87
Giving Day: Giving It Their All
The thrill of competition has the power to motivate and inspire, which is exactly what class agents for the Class of 1987 were aiming for when they rallied classmates to go head-to-head with the Class of 1985 during Portsmouth Abbey’s 2024 Giving Day a 24-hour ask of the entire Abbey community to show their support for the School and its students by making a gift to the Annual Fund. Alumni from both classes stepped up to the challenge as donations came in throughout the day with final numbers showing a win for both years. The Class of 1985 came in with 24 gifts and $12,575, and the Class of 1987 had 23 gifts and raised $19,974.
“The idea for the contest came up during Reunion when we were trying to come up with ideas to engage our class for Giving Day,” Paul B. Baisley ’87 says of teaming up with fellow class agents to launch the initiative. “The Class of 1985 has a history of Giving Day participation so we thought a contest against them would get more people from the Class of 1987 on board.”
In addition to using technology to connect with classmates, Baisley says that in-person events like the Abbot’s Reception in New York and the Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament helped keep the momentum going. And this isn’t the first time that the Class of 1987 has launched an initiative for the School. On the occasion of their 20th reunion, in 2007 they helped develop and fund the John L. McCauley Scholarship Fund in honor of the School’s beloved athletic director and head coach of football and baseball from 1974 to 1988.
“We had an undefeated football team my senior year, so we wanted to find a way to publicly rally around Coach
Jim Knight ’87, Peter Anghinetti ’87 and Paul Baisley ’87.
McCauley and came up with the scholarship concept while we were talking at Reunion about our experiences and how much the School has changed,” says Baisley. “We were a small part of a much bigger project as other classes joined in the initiative to make it successful, but it had great meaning as it was a great opportunity to celebrate somebody who was important to us.”
Baisley believes that same sense of pride came into play for Giving Day as alumni came together to support a school that had a great influence. “We have this shared history: The Abbey has touched a lot of folks in positive ways,” he says. “I remember when I first came to the Abbey: I was ecstatic that I got a C+ on an English test and then one of my teachers found me at the dining hall and asked me what happened. I knew then I had to work harder and there were so many more moments like that at the School. I loved how interested the faculty and staff were in students; it had a very positive effect on me. My classmates did too, and I can probably still name every one of them today.”
That sense of connection was evident when Giving Day arrived on February 29, as class agents sent rally emails throughout the day to encourage folks to follow the Giving
Day web page for real-time updates on donation amounts. “To be able to look at a leader board and see where we’re at versus them was half the fun,” Baisley recalls. George Carter, class agent for the Class of 1985 says, “The Class of ’85 always has a lot of fun with Giving Day Challenges to support the Abbey. The email chatter all day is great. I also used the Class of ’87’s early success to get us rolling.” As a result, the Class of 1987 and Class of 1985 were the top two classes in donations and contributed to an impressive overall Giving Day total of $545,091.
“Giving Day is not just one event; it’s about creating a lifelong community and a strong future for the Abbey — building something that is going to be here 100 years from now” Baisley says. “I hope all alumni will get involved and stay involved; there are so many ways to do that. You can attend or volunteer at in-person events, but I believe that using technology is really the key because it gives people the opportunity in their everyday lives to easily check in with people they haven’t seen in 15 or 20 years.”
As for Giving Day 2025, he adds, “I’m already thinking about next year. Will the Class of 1987 beat the Class of 1985 in donations? I sure hope so!”

David Q. Kearney ’50 a A
The Corvus Society is a recognition and appreciation society that is comprised of individuals who, because of their belief in our mission of helping young men and women grow in knowledge and grace, have created a legacy at Portsmouth Abbey School through a lifetime of giving of their resources of time, talent, and treasure. Their gifts over time have totaled at least $1M and have positively impacted Portsmouth Abbey School and its ability to remain the world’s premier Catholic Benedictine, coeducational boarding and day school. The society’s title holds special meaning for the Portsmouth Abbey community as Corvus is the Latin word for Raven.
To offer some perspective on how he became a member of this society, we have asked David Q. Kearney ’50 to share his deep history with the School.
David Kearney ’50 and his family have shown unwavering generosity towards Portsmouth Abbey for more than seventy years, contributing to the School in countless ways. David and his four now deceased brothers Pierce M. Kearney ’44, Reverend Dom Damian Kearney, O.S.B. ’45, Edward T. Kearney, Jr. ’45, Gerald A. Kearney ’48 attended in the 1940s when the School was known as Portsmouth Priory. The School was markedly different than it is today, although the Benedictine foundation and the dedication to excellence in learning and the Catholic intellectual tradition remain the same.
Hailing from Long Island, New York, David found himself living away from home for the first time as a seventh grader. In those days, Portsmouth accepted younger boarding students. “I was young and homesick at the beginning,” he recalled. “We had cubicles, not private rooms. There was just a curtain to close to give us privacy.”
As World War II raged overseas, Portsmouth became a place of refuge for students from abroad. “A lot of people from Europe came and boarded there during the war,” he said. “There were students from all over in our different classes. They blended in with the American students. I hardly realized there was a war.”
He spent his afternoons playing sports on a much smaller campus, with sheep roaming the property. “Playing six-man football and baseball were some of my happiest memories,” he said.
Attending mass deepened David’s own convictions and molded his character, while the monks “kept me on the straight and narrow.”

He particularly enjoyed the chanting and singing that took place during services. David developed a deep sense of faith and religious devotion and he still attends Mass at either St. John of the Cross Church or Holy Cross Church in Vero Beach, Florida, where he now resides. David lives his life as an example of obedience to his faith, something he had in common with his brother, the late Reverend Dom Damian Kearney, O.S.B. ’45. Father Damian became a beloved member of Portsmouth, joining the monastery soon after David graduated, and the brothers remained extremely close throughout their lives.
David graduated from Brown University in 1954, and then he joined his father and his brother Pierce in real estate in Long Island. “We built houses on Long Island, we converted brownstones into apartments in the City, and we owned eight or nine buildings,” he said. “I enjoyed this work because every day was different and challenging. It was not monotonous.”
At 93 years old, he’s not fully retired, having recently purchased a building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. “I still keep my finger in real estate,” he said.
Over the years, David stayed resolutely connected to Portsmouth. He is the Class Agent for the Class of 1950, and he has supported the Annual Fund, The Mr. and Mrs. Edward T. Kearney Scholarship Fund, various other endowments and initiatives, and the Science Building Construction Fund. His nephew, the late Nicholas A. Kearney graduated from Portsmouth in 1986, his granddaughter MargaretTheresa K. Ingraham in 2015, and his grandson David F. Ingraham in 2017.
In May of 2021, on the occasion of David’s 90th birthday, the David Quentin Kearney ’50 Endowed Scholarship Fund (hereinafter, the “Fund”) was established by David’s daughter Jennifer Kearney and his son-in-law William Ingraham P’15 ’17 in recognition of David’s exceptional and enduring contributions to the Portsmouth community. The Fund reflects David’s unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith, and his long association with the School as an alumnus, grandparent and benefactor. Its purpose is to provide financial aid to those for whom a Portsmouth Abbey education would otherwise be unavailable. Will Ingraham shares, “David is a keenly intellectual, compassionate, kind and humble man. He leads by example, never wanting to draw attention to himself, and has been an inspiration to many. This is a small token of recognition for a great man who is beloved by all who know him.”
For an awe-inspiring 84 years, David and the entire Kearney family have been shining examples of unwavering philanthropic dedication. Their generous contributions have woven themselves into the very essence of the School, touching the lives of countless students and faculty members. Through their time, talent, and treasure, they have not only supported but also led by example, showing us the true meaning of committed philanthropy. Their unwavering conviction in the School’s mission continues to help young men and women flourish in both knowledge and grace. Their legacy is a beacon of hope and inspiration for us all.

David was instilled with a strong commitment to philanthropy through his faith and by his grandparents and parents. He has been particularly inspired to continue their legacy in supporting scholarships for students. “I know it’s hard for some families to afford to come to Portsmouth,” he said. “I get thank you letters from some students. That means a lot to me.”

Patrick V. McDevitt ’24 a A
Patrick McDevitt sought out Portsmouth Abbey to take his academics and athletics to the next level. A self-described “shy kid,” he entered the Abbey in his Fourth-Form year as an alternate goalie on the boys’ varsity ice hockey team. He ended his Sixth-Form year as captain of the team with one of the highest GPAs in his class, an opportunity to play Div. III hockey at Wesleyan University, and the respect and admiration of his classmates, teammates, faculty members, and coaches.
“I’ve always been focused on hockey, but my family and I knew I needed a strong academic school to round out my life,” Patrick said, who hails from Montreal, Canada. “Portsmouth Abbey was the perfect fit for all of it. And it helped that there were a few other Canadians already there.”
At the Abbey, Patrick brought an understated, humble, and steady leadership to the hockey team. “Patrick is a natural leader not because he is the loudest or most demanding, but because he holds himself to the highest standards,” Athletic Director Chris Milmoe said. “He demands excellence from himself, and that inspires all other students around him. He was the backbone of our boys’ varsity hockey team playing in the goal, and he will be an incredible representative of the Abbey when he goes off to play in college.”
One of Patrick’s favorite athletic memories at the Abbey was his first game in goal. “I had a couple of good saves, and it was the first time I was in front of a crowd

like that,” he said. “The energy in the building was something I’ll remember for a long time.”
Patrick’s adviser, Lizzie Benestad, applauded his dedication to elevating his game. “Patrick didn’t just rely on his natural athletic ability he was in the gym regularly and consistently working on getting better,” she said. He also pushed himself to branch out beyond hockey, playing soccer and lacrosse. Along with serving as a prefect in St. Leonard’s, Patrick was a founding member of the Portsmouth Abbey Sports Network (PASN), a sports broadcasting channel that saw him and fellow classmates announcing sports games via Instagram Live for an audience of students, alumni, and family members tuning in from anywhere around the world.
“I’ve always loved broadcasting, especially sports broadcasting,” he said. “My grandfather was a broadcaster for CBC, so it connected me to him.”
Patrick’s involvement with the Portsmouth Abbey Sports Network marked a monumental evolution from shy student to confident, driven leader. He credits his time at the Abbey for instilling the courage to try a new endeavor that might ultimately inspire his future; he plans to study broadcasting at Wesleyan next year, with ESPN headquarters nearby.
“The support and positivity of everyone around me at Portsmouth was a huge
reason why I felt safe to try something new,” he said.
In his dorm, Patrick said he made friends for life, and he felt genuinely supported by his house parents. “Our house parents are the people who made the Abbey feel like home,” he said. “Having the opportunity to meet all types of people was an amazing experience.”
Living independently also taught Patrick self-awareness. He came to understand what he needed to stay balanced and focused—and that included a hammock. Down on the bay, he strung up a hammock between two trees, and it’s there he both relaxed and studied, including reading The Samurai by Shusaku Endo for his English class.
“The Abbey taught me time management, how to get things done at my own pace, and how to balance athletics with academics and having a social life,” he said. “I was able to figure
out how I wanted to live and what I value, and that’s carrying over to my summer at home and will continue into college.”
Diane Soboski, Patrick’s college advisor, said, “He’s very aware of himself, his space in the community, and how his actions will impact others. He meditates every day and finds it crucial to balancing the competing pressures of being a top student, athlete, and leader; he’s very open about how it helps him manage his stress and be his best self.”
Patrick expressed his gratitude for the financial aid he received at the Abbey.
“I wouldn’t have had this once-in-alifetime experience without it,” he said. And it’s no question he plans to stay connected to the School. “I really want to keep in contact with the faculty and the friends that I met at the Abbey. I’ll reach out to people when I travel through the U.S. and when I come back to the School for a hockey game or graduation.”

Joe Murray and Linda Silveira P’26 a A
Olivia Murray ’26 set her sights on Portsmouth Abbey in the fourth grade. She attended a drama production at the school, came home, and declared her intentions. Years later, she stuck to them.
Her parents, Joe Murray and Linda Silveira, were impressed with their daughter’s convictions. “Olivia was drawn to the community, and she knew from a young age that she wanted a faith-based school,” Linda said. “Meeting students on campus solidified her desire to go there.”
Another draw: Olivia and her parents live in Bristol, a mere eight minutes away from campus, so the school was familiar. “It was the best choice Olivia could have made,” Linda said. “She’s already grown so much. It’s more like a college environment, and she’s had to manage her own schedule. She’s really rising to it.”
Linda is a real estate consultant and Joe is the owner and co-founder of a Greater Boston billboard company.
As a local day-student family, they’ve become committed and generous supporters of the Annual Fund and the Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament.
“We donate to the Annual Fund to support a diverse community,” Joe said. “It’s nice that a wide variety of students can have access to an education that might otherwise be out of reach.”
“By participating in the Annual Fund,” Linda added, “we feel like we can help bolster the School in some small way. And we know the School makes really good use of the resources they’re given.”
Joe and Linda also volunteer on Spring Family Day, and this past August they hosted a welcome gathering for new students and their families at their home for the third year in a row. They first held the gathering as a way for Olivia and her new classmates to meet each other, and the event has become an unofficial tradition.
“Kids are going into high school, and it can be pretty intimidating,” Linda said. “It’s nice for students to get to know each other before classes start. And it was great because Olivia and her peers hit the ground running. They knew plenty of people going into the Abbey, which made the transition from middle school to high school that much easier.”
Abbey students often make lifelong friends, and so do the parents which is another incentive for getting involved at the School. “We’re happy to serve as
a way to give back,” Linda said. “And volunteering is a great way to meet other families. You can develop bonds during your child’s time there, which will extend into the future.”
Over these past two years, Joe and Linda have watched Olivia rise to challenges and learn more about herself. This summer, she attended the esteemed Oxford Summer Programme. “It was a growth experience for her,” Joe said. “Although it was a group trip, it forced her to take care of herself without our guidance. With classes every morning, she had to take care of business before sightseeing. It was an overall great experience.”
Olivia has also taken to athletics at the Abbey, which has instilled a newfound resiliency. “I love that the Abbey cultivates an athletic experience, whether you are the super athlete or you’re new to sports,” Linda said. “She’d never played volleyball, and now she really enjoys it. And never in my life did I think she would play JV ice hockey, but she tried it last year, and it was fun. She’s really learned from those opportunities.”
Joe continued, “What Olivia’s learned from athletics is not being afraid to fail, because failure does happen, and you move on. That’s part of real life.”
Not only are Joe and Linda excited to see what’s in store for Olivia, they’re also excited for the future of Portsmouth Abbey, and they’re committed to having a hand in that future through their stewardship and volunteerism. “The Abbey has a great program,” Linda said. “The academics are wonderful, and their approach to athletics is amazing. I love the new student center. I see future

advancement and future growth. We make our contributions so these opportunities can continue to be available and to see great things unfold there.”
Giving to the Annual Fund is also a teaching moment for Olivia, helping to impress a “pay it forward” mentality. “Your kids watch what you do, and they see how you do things,” Joe said. “Sometimes actions speak louder than words. And even after Olivia leaves the Abbey, she’s still part of that community. She wants to see it thrive and grow. Paying it forward helps her as much as it helps the people that come behind her.”

Typically, Portsmouth Abbey receives nearly $50,000 each year because our donors took the extra step necessary to maximize their gifts by obtaining a matching gift form from a corporation or foundation with which they are affiliated.

Sixth Form Class Gift Donors
The Class of 2024 kicked off Commencement Weekend with their Sixth-Form Dinner at the Newport Beach House, enjoying stunning views of the Atlantic. They were joined by alumni legacy families, alumni faculty, Board Chair Chris Abbate ’88 P’20 ’23, Head of School Matt Walter, and special alumni guest speaker Capt. Julian Minondo, USA ’14. As the sun set on the glorious spring evening, the Class of 2024 was officially welcomed into the Portsmouth Abbey School alumni community.
Director of Advancement Patty Gibbons emceed the event and spoke about the lifelong connection of being a Raven. Alumni guest speaker Julian traveled from Fort Bliss, TX, where he serves as an aviator and Company Commander in the United States Army. During his time at the Abbey, Julian was Head Boy, captain of the soccer team, played squash and lacrosse, participated in Boston Model UN, was a prefect in St. Martin’s House, and graduated as Class Valedictorian. His story took him from his native Guatemala to Portsmouth Abbey, and then to the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with military distinction
and two degrees, one in Political Science and one in Medieval Studies. Julian emphasized the importance of answering the call to serve and offered advice to the graduates: never compromise your conscience, take risks but mitigate them, and embrace failure.
After Julian’s inspiring remarks, the Class of 2024 Gift Officers presented Head of School Matt Walter with the Sixth-Form Gift. The Class raised $568.25, which was generously matched by an anonymous donor, bringing the total gift to Portsmouth Abbey to $1,136.50. This matching gift continues to inspire and encourage students to make their first contribution to the School, signaling their commitment to its future. Thank you to the Class of 2024 for their generosity and support of the School.

For Dr. John J. Dooner ’72, Portsmouth Abbey was the seminal place where he developed his intention to live a life of integrity and quiet altruism. After he unexpectedly passed away in December 2023 at the age of 69, his widow, Marja Dooner, has continued to honor his commitment to Portsmouth, working with the School to create the Dr. John J. Dooner ’72 Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Along with the couple’s generous support of the Annual Fund for decades, this planned gift was part of John’s estate plan, marking his commitment to “pay it forward.”
“To my dying day, it will give me comfort to think about a kid at Portsmouth Abbey who is benefiting from John’s gift,” Marja said. “And maybe this kid will really go on and set the world on fire.”
Planned gifts to Portsmouth serve to create permanent legacies for donors and they also secure the health and future of the School. “We’ve always believed in planned giving, and we know that estate gifts are important to schools and institutions,” Marja said.
“As soon as we started dating, John talked about his life at Portsmouth Priory. He valued the education, and he felt lucky that he was able to go there. He always said his goal in life was to sponsor another student, giving someone else the opportunity to experience what he experienced.”
John and Marja met in Kansas City, Missouri, when he was completing his anesthesia residency program at Saint Luke’s Hospital and she was a newly graduated registered nurse.
“I was drawn to John because he was intelligent and interested,” she said. “Not a lot of people are good listeners. John really was.”
The couple married in 1987 and moved to Toledo, OH. John became a practicing anesthesiologist at St. Vincent Medical Center, now Mercy St. Vincent, and Marja worked as an ER nurse and in emergency department management.
John often shared memories of the Priory with Marja, tracing many of his affinities to his time there: his favorite smell of honeysuckle (found all over campus); his interest in World War II history (thanks to a faculty member and large book collection); and his forever wardrobe: navy blazer, buttondown shirt, and khaki pants.
Marja was always astounded by the beauty of the campus when the couple returned for visits. “When we were there, we used to sit in the chapel, meditate, and look at the beauty of that place, thinking about how kids have such an incredible opportunity to walk through the chapel and see the history,” she said.

At the center of John’s life was his Catholic faith. “When I met John, let’s say that I was Catholic ‘light,’ because I was a Lutheran,” Marja said. “I converted to Catholicism because of John, and I learned a lot about Benedictine philosophy from him.”
Central to that philosophy for John was the phrase “There, but for the Grace of God, go I,” inspiring him to support those less fortunate—but in understated ways consistent with his humble character. He was an excellent tipper to people working in the service industry, quietly helped to offset the costs of education for a certified registered nurse anesthetist, and participated in medical missions to Africa with Operation Smile, and the Dominican Republic with local medical teams. During his wake, person after person approached Marja to share a story of John’s discreet philanthropy.
“I think his spirit of generosity came from Portsmouth Abbey,” Marja said. The Benedictine values of hospitality, stewardship and community are evident in the Dooners’ commitment to supporting the School. “The School’s philosophy is about giving, and those who have a lot need to make sure they pay it forward. And that’s what my husband did.”
Along with upholding John’s dedication to Portsmouth and to the Annual Fund, Marja is also committed to

advocating for changes to emergency medicine. John experienced a head injury after a fall, and there is a case to be made that he should have been immediately transferred to a trauma center a move that Marja said may have saved his life. “My goal is to talk about what happened from my perspective as a healthcare professional,” she said.
John fell just before attending Mass, not realizing that he was in any grave danger. “I know that the last thing he ate on that Tuesday was the Eucharist,” she said. “So every single Tuesday I attend Mass to receive
the Eucharist.” While she was sitting by John’s hospital bed, she played some of his favorite music, including several Catholic hymns. “I could tell that on some level he may have heard those.”
Echoing in her mind is John’s early goal to lift up another student at Portsmouth Abbey, now coming to fruition through his scholarship fund. “John always said he wanted to support the Abbey because that was his start. It was his beginning. They gave him a wonderful base on which to build his life. It gives me great comfort to be able to donate to the future of the school.”
