Focus on Fostering

Why I'm a foster carer Emma, 28, from Southsea, is one of our foster carers. Here she tells us how she sees her role. What made you want to foster? I didn't want to go straight into a high-powered job after university, and did some volunteer mentoring with a 15-year-old girl whose mum had kicked her out. Just being part of our life was a positive influence for her, so I wanted to do more.

What are the rewards? The everyday experiences – bringing young people into a safe place and giving them the care and positive routine they need. I give them experiences and good family relationships they may not have experienced before. It's a job I'm proud of, that my friends and family respect.

You call it a job? Fostering is my job. I'm here to be a positive role model and influence. The financial rewards are very generous, up to £500 a week for each young person, meaning I can do it full-time.

What are the challenges?

Foster carer Emma with husband Chris and their dog Summer

Anyone will tell you that parenting teenagers can be hard work, and some of these young people have faced really tough situations. But there are so many positives to balance those times.

If you're considering fostering: During national Foster Care Fortnight (June 1-14), we invite everyone to 'make a connection' to fostering, and raise awareness of Portsmouth young people who need a safe, stable environment while difficulties at home are addressed. On 11 June (7.30–9.30pm) you can find out about becoming a foster carer by meeting foster carers and staff at our event on View Deck 1 of the Spinnaker Tower (entry is free – no need to book). For more information in general, chat to us on 023 9283 4071, visit www.fosterportsmouth.co.uk or attend one of our fostering monthly drop-in sessions at the Civic Offices (7–8.30pm, 26 May and 21 July). 4 Term Times | Summer 2015

Hello from the Director of Children's Services Di Smith It’s great to be here in Portsmouth – there is a lot to be proud of here, but there is also ambition for the future and a focus on areas where we want to improve outcomes and opportunities. My aim is to lead and support children’s services and add value where there are opportunities for us to secure further improvement.

Education standards continue to improve Portsmouth has a 3 year improving achievement trend at all key stages in education and predictions for 2015 indicate that this will continue.

Up, up and away Year 2 children at Stamshaw Infant School held a balloon launch as part of their project learning about different countries. They wrote messages, explaining to a potential finder that they were learning about different countries and would be interested to hear about where they lived and then attached them to the balloons. The whole school gathered for the launch and the following day received a response from Germany – 565 miles away and also had messages from France and Switzerland.

Sci Fi St George Year 6 children at St George's Beneficial CofE Primary School made their own sci fi film. Lily and Dana aged 10 along with their crew produced 'Plazo' – their version of the story of St George. The children were inspired by watching Star Wars and Star Trek films and a professional film maker created a script from their ideas. After 1½ days of filming and a day of editing, the film was premiered to family and friends and received rave reviews. 5 Summer 2015 | Term Times

Castles, dancing, gymnastics and a trip to the zoo! Northern Parade School infant school's Year R visited Portchester Castle as part of their 'Fairy tales and castles' topic. The whole school enjoyed celebrating Diwali this year by taking part in a dance workshop with Trishul Dance Company.

Bake Off

Year 2 visited Marwell Zoo on a particularly cold day, thankfully the animals still came out to say hello! This was part of their topic, 'What a Wonderful World' looking at different animals and their habitats. Year 2 children also took part in an inter schools gymnastics festival – we entered two teams and came 1st and 3rd in the competition!

Ark Ayrton Primary Academy had a 'Bake Off' and sold all the cakes and cookies to raise ÂŁ393.88 for The Mad Hatter's Party. The school also celebrated World Book Day with staff and pupils dressing up as their favourite book character and every child got to take home a new book.

Cottage Grove Mother's Day Breakfast Year R children at Cottage Grove spoilt their mums by hosting a Mother’s day breakfast for them. They served croissants, pancakes, fruit loaf and orange juice and enjoyed trying some new foods themselves!

Life in the Stone Age Year 5 visited Butser Ancient Farm to find out what it was like to live in the Stone Age. They weaved the wood in and out of wooden poles to make fences and used flint to carve a piece of chalk and decorate it. Then the children saw the farm's animals and explored the Iron Age houses to compare them to the Stone Age house.

Enter the dragon Cottage Grove also celebrated Chinese New Year by learning about China – the horoscope story, the dragon dance, the Great Wall of China, the Willow Pattern story and Chinese music and dance. The children played gongs, cymbals, drums and danced with the dragons. At lunchtime everyone enjoyed a special Chinese lunch and made colourful dragons to take home.

Mary Rose Museum Year 3 children visited the Mary Rose Museum and learnt lots of interesting facts about the Mary Rose. The children enjoyed imagining what it would have been like to live on a ship during Tudor times and got to dress up as different people who would have lived and worked on board the ship. They also learnt how to load and fire the cannon and then worked as a team to either attack or defend England. It helped the children to understand what it would have been like to be part of the Mary Rose’s crew.

Dinner Time with Zoolab Year 4 children at Cottage Grove had an exciting start to their topic ‘Dinner time’ when Zoolab – animal specialist company – visited with their array of creatures. Children learnt about food chains and the role of prey and predator. Creatures including; an African land snail, a colourful corn snake called Saturn, Rose the tarantula, a hissing cockroach and a domesticated rat, inspired the children to want to find out more about animals and their food chains.

Our daily bread Year 3 children at Meon Junior School had a visit from Warburtons. They learnt about healthy eating and got to make and eat some delicious, healthy sandwiches. 7 Summer 2015 | Term Times

Staying away Year 3 children at Solent Juniors went on their first residential to Minstead. They spent two nights and three days away from home in the New Forest. They explored the local village, had a picnic and visited the grave of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They went on a walk to the delightful ditch of doom and crossed the toe tickler troll bridge to give him a toffee stone as a gift. Then they raced to the pudding tree, collected earth stones before running round the sun eight times. They also made special lanterns for their night walk, told stories around the bonfire and sang songs.

Vive la France Wimborne Junior pupils sampled brioche and croissants and made their own Henri Matisse cut outs.

Year 3 pupils from Newbridge Junior School enjoyed visiting Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as part of their study of the city's history.

Up 4 It by Laura Hall and Iona Franckeiss aged 10, Wimborne Junior School Year 5s had some special visitors from the University of Portsmouth, they told us about university life and set up a range of fun activities and encouraged us to think about what job we'd want to do when we're older. We all had a great time and it really helped us understand what university is all about.

Science Fun and Bee Hotel Children at Fernhurst Junior School enjoyed a variety of activities during science week - they made corn flour slime, dissected flowers and fish and designed rockets. Pupils also constructed a 'bee hotel' for a variety of non-stinging bee - they learnt new skills such as sawing and drilling and it's a beautiful addition to the school grounds. 8 Term Times | Summer 2015

School news

Lab on tour National Science Week arrived at Milton Park School with a bang thanks to a visit from Portsmouth College's 'Lab on Tour'. Devised by Caroline Morgan and ably supported by a team of willing college students, the 'Lab' allowed pupils to engage in a series of exciting science challenges in their own school environment. Following a successful trial with Year R pupils at the school in 2014, this year's event was much bigger, enabling all students across the entire school range of Year R to Year 6 to be fully involved. The event included 11 different themed stations including rockets blasting at a space station, magic fire bubbles and lots of fun making slime! 22 students from the college acted as Lab assistants for the day, and their enthusiasm and passion for science rubbed off on the pupils who all left with a memento of the day that they had made, in the shape of bath bombs, slime balls and cress heads! The event was also supported by the Mary Rose Museum, who provided their own 'tipping ship' station which tested the pupils ability to balance a boat. Over the course of the day some 450 pupils took the opportunity to see a whole different angle on science – parents were also given the chance to be involved, with many attending a session at the end of the day to engage them and equip them with ideas to provide science based fun activities at home.

"Today has been really good. I did lots of fun things that I hadn’t done before and learnt lots too. It was nice that they came in to do this for us."

"Science Week has been amazing. Today was really fun and exciting. There was loads to do, a lot more than I thought there would be. I really enjoyed making bouncy balls, I didn’t think they would bounce. I love science and I hope we can do this again." Daisy Newman

"I had a lot of fun today. I wanted to spend all day in here. I love science and it was really good to do things that we haven’t done in lessons." Sonny Ward

"We were very fortunate to have a visit from Portsmouth College ‘Lab on Tour’. The students provided a wide variety of scientific activities and investigations, which the whole school were able to take part in. It was great that the children were also able to bring their parents in long after school to show them the fantastic things they had been doing and what they had learnt. This was a super end to our amazing Science Week." Mrs Billie Edge, Science Leader Milton Park Primary School

Early years news

e r a c Child Portsmouth’s youngest children get off to a flying start with 65% of five year olds achieving a good level of development (compared to around 60% nationally). This is because parents, childminders, nurseries and children's centres work in partnership to provide the best possible opportunities for our children. Thanks to new government offers, all three-and-fouryear olds in Portsmouth are now eligible for 15 hours of free childcare, as well as 40 per cent of two-yearolds from the low incomes. Families will soon be helped to buy more hours of childcare thanks to the introduction of tax free childcare and Universal Credit. Giving children the best start in life is important. The council provides services that support early years development building on children’s individual interests and using these to enable meaningful learning so that children achieve their potential and are ready for school. Spending time with a good childminder or in nursery can help children to develop the social skills they'll need at school. It's important for parents and carers to have as many childcare options to be available to them as possible and childminders are an important part of that choice. Portsmouth’s childminders are fully registered with Ofsted; they have good opportunities to share good practice with colleagues through local groups and citywide conferences. Since September 2014, government funds must be distributed by local authorities to Ofsted-registered childminders offering parents of two, three and four year olds 15 hours of free childcare per week. To find childminders near you, visit www.portsmouth.gov.uk and search childminding or if you'd like to become a childminder contact 023 9268 8830 for more information.

Extra funding for early years From April 2015, nurseries, schools, childminders and other childcare providers will be able to claim extra funding through the Early Years Pupil Premium to support children’s development, learning and care. The Early Years Pupil Premium provides an extra 53 pence per hour for three and four year old children whose parents are in receipt of certain benefits or who have been in care or adopted from care. That's up to £302 a year which could make a significant difference in improving the quality of the early years education which can have a big influence on a child's primary and secondary school education. Ask your childcare provider for more information and to find out if you can claim.

Cumberland House Natural History Museum review by Cathy Brooks It’s nearly time for our annual trip to Cumberland House as between May and September each year there’s a fantastic array of butterflies on display. Butterflies of every colour imaginable, from the tiny to the huge, can be seen fluttering around and the place is packed full of information boards to tell you everything you could ever need to know about the different species on display. After a look at the butterflies (it does get hot, so it’s never a long visit) the museum also has a dinosaur exhibition with fossils and a life size model – which always amuses the children. And the good news – it’s free entry. Combine a visit to the butterflies of Cumberland House with a picnic in the museum’s great gardens afterwards, and it’s a perfect, low-cost summer holiday day out. Cumberland House, Eastern Parade, Portsmouth, PO4 9RF 023 9281 5276 www.portsmouth naturalhistory.co.uk

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard review by Cathy Brooks Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard is one of the nation’s historical gems and we are so lucky to have such an amazing attraction right on our doorstep. So when we saw the annual ticket on a half price offer, we snapped it up and have visited the Historic Dockyard numerous times this year with our three children, aged eight and under. There is always something new to see or do. Clambering aboard the famous Victory and Warrior warships is always a favourite, and the newly-restored Mary Rose Museum is a must-see – especially for the older children. The Harbour Tour is a great chance to get up-close with the more modern ships of today’s Navy. We have found the staff to be really helpful and full of historical nuggets which they are happy to impart on the children.

Royal Armouries Museum, Fort Nelson review by Elizabeth Yaxley Potter My two boys aged 9 and 5 really enjoyed their time at Royal Armouries, entrance is free but we paid £3.50 each for the brick making tour – which was great value for money they both thought it was great. At 1pm they fire the guns which are really loud and the tunnels are great to explore. It's a great place to go in the school holidays and it won't break the bank.

Royal Armouries Museum, Fort Nelson, Portsdown Hill Road, Fareham, PO17 6AN

And if it’s a wet day, head for Action Stations, where our children have spent many a happy morning on the climbing wall and playing on numerous displays and interactive exhibits. Portsmouth I would recommend Historic Dockyard, anyone to go and have Victory Gate, a look around the HM Naval Base, dockyard – a cliché, but Portsmouth, PO1 3LJ it really is a fun day out 023 9283 9766 for all the family. www.historic dockyard.co.uk

K Have you heard about the Portsmouth Local Offer? Support for children and young people with special needs and disabilities and their families changed in September 2014. As part of these changes local authorities need to publish their 'local offer' of support available for children and young people in their area who have special educational needs and disabilities. Portsmouth is taking the lead on the implementation of the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) reforms across the south east. The SEND reforms are all about improving services and outcomes for children and young people with special needs and disabilities and their families. In association with parents, young people, carers and service providers we've created a website that's a 'one stop shop' to find out what support is available locally. For more information visit: www.portsmouthlocaloffer.org 20 Term Times | Summer 2015

Malsey Morgan, age 7 I like this book and have read it lots of times it is funny. I like the bit when Grandma shrinks and disappears. Viviane, age 7

I thought the book was hilarious because George made a medicine and it made grandma turn big and small. It is just so, so funny. Halle Davies, age 7
