VOLUNTEERING FAYRE 2014
WELCOME TO THE
VOLUNTEERING FAYRE 2014! Volunteering is now an integral part of university life throughout the UK and especially at the University of Portsmouth, where the number of students recorded as volunteering doubled last year. Employers want to see much more than a degree on a graduate’s CV now, they need to see strong evidence of skill sets relevant to the role they are applying for. Volunteering is a superb route for accessing these skills, building your confidence and ensuring you enter the job market competitively. Purple Door has close links with a wide variety of organisations including schools, the police, the NHS, charities, social enterprises and other not for profit organisations who provide volunteering roles that may be course related or linked to your future career. All of these roles have something in common - they are designed to improve your employability skills and therefore your future graduate job prospects. All of the organisations are here today because they value students their help, their ideas and their opinions. So make the most of today, do something for yourself and the local community. If you are unsure which skill sets to look to develop through volunteering for your career options, then make sure you pop along to see one of our Careers Advisors at our Quick Query clinic.

VOLUNTEERING FAYRE 2014 It’s great to do something with your free time and volunteer. There are many ways you can get involved whilst studying at the University of Portsmouth; by joining local community projects, one-off projects with VIP, year long projects with the Union, or find opportunities with recognised organisations at Purple Door. As a student I got a lot out of my time volunteering. On weekends I would go to the Community Cycle Centre to help local residents with their bikes. As someone who had never fixed a bike before, it was the perfect opportunity to learn new skills while at the same time helping the local community and meeting great people. I also volunteered at Number 6 Cinema on Saturdays, I really enjoyed the team of volunteers that run the project and it was also a great opportunity to learn about cinema. In my third year, I became captain of the boxing club. As captain, I used to take fitness sessions every week to support beginners and more experienced boxers to keep in shape. These are just some examples of the diverse range of volunteering opportunities available to you right now. Volunteering is the perfect opportunity to learn new skills and develop as a person while helping others and meeting new people. If you have considered volunteering before, then our Volunteering Fair is the perfect opportunity to get an idea of what you can get involved in. When you ask volunteers why they spend their time volunteering, you will get a lot of different reasons. There are some added benefits you may not have thought about and that you might want to consider. You can gain insight and knowledge, not only of a cause or organisation, but of yourself as well, and you also get an opportunity to gain a new set of skills; this is especially valuable for when you are applying for jobs. Volunteering can also be a great opportunity to make some really useful contacts which could help you later in life. The Volunteering Fayre is a perfect opportunity to find out more about volunteering and to get involved in life changing opportunities. Have a look around, register your interest and get involved. Give a little, gain a lot!
