It’s often said that people cannot truly see the whole picture until the last piece of a puzzle has been placed. If that’s the case, then they are really in for a surprise when the final piece of Southern Indiana’s transportation puzzle is put into place – the first Ohio River crossing on the eastside of Louisville. When the “East End Crossing” finally opens in 2016 less than a mile from the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville, it will not only complete loop around the Louisville metro area, but it will also provide the port with even more logistical advantages. No longer will port businesses need to drive 20 miles through two downtowns during rush hour traffic just to get a half mile across the river. In fact, almost all points east and south of the port will become nearly 30 minutes closer at times with the new bridge – this includes some very large auto plants and major industrial markets that present significant opportunities for current and future companies locating in and around the port. The 12 steel-related companies that make up the port’s “Steel Campus” will greatly benefit from improved access to the region’s “automotive and appliance alley.” For Chuck Moore, president of long-time port tenant Eagle Steel Products and board member for the Advanced Manufacturing & Logistics Network of Greater Louisville Inc., the bridge cannot come soon enough. “The East End Crossing is invaluable,” said Moore. “Too often bottlenecks occur that not only affect quality of life but speed of business. Offering an alternate route for drivers will ease congestion as well as lessen transportation time. Right now the commute is about 45 minutes between our two locations across the river from one another. The trip will be reduced to half the time, if not more, with the new bridge.” The East End Crossing will connect I-265 on both sides of the river, culminating in a much anticipated metropolitan loop and connecting to three interstates as well as the port’s multimodal facilities. with simultaneous construction of the “Downtown Crossing,” the $2.3 billion Ohio River Bridges project being undertaken by Indiana and Kentucky is one of the largest transportation projects in the nation. “Southern Indiana and Louisville are inseparable economically,” said Scott Stewart, director of the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville. “We all work and play and learn and explore on both sides of the river. The improved transportation connections for Louisville, Southern Indiana and the port ensure this region is poised for exceptional growth.” In an effort to maximize the economic development potential from the new East End Crossing, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence announced that state and local partners will provide $22.5 million to construct a heavy haul road and rail corridor linking the port and River Ridge Commerce Center’s 6,000-acre industrial park to the bridge’s first exit. “Throughout Indiana’s history, logistics has been and will continue to be a mainstay which makes our state desirable and competitive for economic development opportunities,” said Pence. “Indiana has distinct advantages in location, infrastructure, economy, tax structure and regulatory environment. By leveraging a critical asset in the southeast corner of our state, logistically speaking, this commitment will keep Indiana moving in the right direction as a state that works for business.” While the port has 340 acres available for development, the new corridor opens the door for larger industrial developments to have access to river and rail connections. This collaboration creates the opportunity for the Ports of Indiana and River Ridge to pursue 1,000+ acre megaprojects that they would not have been able to attract alone. “The combined economic potential of the Port of IndianaJeffersonville and the River Ridge Commerce Center is remarkable and unparalleled in our state or the Midwest,” said Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore. “For our community and our multi-state region, the best is truly yet to come.”

Jeffboat building “super jumbo” barges, expanding business Barges are the workhorses of the towing industry, carrying millions of tons of cargo through river systems and harbors of every continent in the world on a daily basis. A major manufacturer of these barges is located on the Ohio River in Jeffersonville, Ind. – Jeffboat. The company recently re-opened an inactive production line and is adding 100 new jobs to help build super jumbo barges. The nation’s largest inland shipbuilder and the manufacturing division of American Commercial Lines (ACL), Jeffboat is the second-largest builder of barges and runs four production yards. With support from federal funding, Jeffboat revitalized a dormant production line and quickly put it to task with construction of 10 super jumbo, covered hoppers built for Stevens Towing, based in Yonges Island, S.C. Jeffboat’s super jumbo barges are 260 feet long, 52½ feet These blue water barges will be used in coastal shipping wide and 12 feet deep, and can carry approximately 140 and are the first vessels to be constructed at the truckloads of cargo – 3,500 tons. Typical hopper barges are reactivated production line. Airgas Inc. was awarded two Fleet Safety Excellence Awards by the Compressed Gas Association (CGA), the U.S. industrial, specialty and medical gas industry’s standard-setting organization for the promotion of safety standards and practices. The first award honored Airgas’ cylinder vehicle fleet and the second award recognized Airgas’ bulk vehicle fleet. The CGA calculates its fleet safety awards on a CGA member company’s total vehicle accident frequency rate per million miles driven during the year. The CGA recognizes one small fleet and one large fleet in each of the Bulk Vehicle and Cylinder Vehicle categories; Airgas won the large fleet award in both categories. The East End Crossing of the Ohio River Bridges project was named the national “Deal of the Year” by The Bond Buyer publication. The prestigious award was announced at a reception with the nation’s senior bond professionals in New York City. “Congratulations to the Indiana Finance Authority, Indiana Department of Transportation and WVB East End Partners for being the first public-private partnership team to win the national Deal of the Year award,” said Indiana Governor Mike Pence. “Delivering world-class infrastructure under budget with an accelerated construction schedule is what makes Indiana a state that works.” Gov. Pence also announced last week that all three bond agencies – Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s, and Fitch Ratings – maintained Indiana’s AAA credit rating that it has held since April 2010. Ports of Indiana Commission approves $5.9M in projects and improvements for 2013 The Ports of Indiana Commission approved $5.9 million in infrastructure investments for Indiana’s three ports in 2013, with $1.3 million for the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville, including: • New Heavy-Haul Road and Rail Corridor – $325,000 for an engineering study and a contribution toward the $22.5 million corridor project, which is being funded through a partnership with City of Jeffersonville, Clark County Commission, River Ridge Development Authority, Indiana Department of Transportation and Indiana Economic Development Corp. to connect the port and River Ridge to the new East End Crossing on the Ohio River. • Warehouse Roof – $591,345 to Force Construction Co. of Columbus, Ind. for replacing the roof on the port’s transit shed facility and installing a standing seam metal overlay system over the existing roof.

• Drainage Projects – $29,092 to various contractors for removing sediment and stabilizing port ditches to control erosion and improve storm water drainage throughout port. • Roadway Improvements – $302,970 to Sedam Contracting Corp. of Hanover, Ind., for road paving and replacement of an 84-inch pipe under Port Road used to maintain the flow of Lancassange Creek. Port Road and Middle Road intersection was also reinforced with concrete pavement for long-term heavy use. • River Dredging – $34,644 to Southwind Construction Corp. of Evansville, Ind., for removal of sediment in Ohio River around docks to increase water depth for barge traffic. • Major projects at the other two ports included rail line replacement, dock wall and sewer repairs at the Port of IndianaBurns Harbor and waterfront and drainage projects at the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon.

Fourth quarter shipments reach all-time high

Carmeuse investing $10 million in port facility

The Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon finished 2013 by shipping more cargo during the fourth quarter than any other quarter in the port’s 37-year history. For the year, the port handled over 4.15 million tons, up 21 percent from 2012. The 1.59 million tons shipped in October-December 2013 were more than the total annual volume for each of the port’s first five years of operations. “Because of the extremely strong fourth quarter, 2013 is one for the record books,” said Port Director Phil Wilzbacher. “This was the first time our shipments exceeded 500,000 tons for two consecutive months, let alone three consecutive months. The improved 2013 tonnage is attributed to increases in coal, fertilizer and a record grain harvest. “We could not have achieved the record fourth quarter without the ongoing commitment and efforts of our port companies. By no means was this an easy feat. It’s very satisfying to end the year in such a strong way.” For the year, the port handled approximately 2,200 barges, 85,000 trucks and 26,000 railcars. The significant increase in annual tonnage was driven by strong shipments of coal, grain, soy products, fertilizer and petroleum coke.

Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor company Carmeuse Lime & Stone is investing $10 million in its port facility. The expansion includes two new grinding mills, which will increase the company’s capability by 300,000 tons per year. Carmeuse receives limestone by ship from its Great Lakes mills and grinds it into powder at the port facility. The product is then trucked out of the port to NIPSCO’s coal-powered facilities, where it is used to reduce sulfur emissions. “We at the port are pleased to be able to present an environment that assists great companies like Carmeuse to expand their business,” said Rick Heimann, port director at the Port of IndianaBurns Harbor. “We strive to present a sustainable competitive advantage for our customers and are happy to help support our port partners’ growth.” Carmeuse has operated its port facility since 1991.
