WELCOME TO PORT STEPHENS, BUT BE WARNED… IT’S NOT UNUSUAL FOR VISITORS TO ACTUALLY FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE.
You’ll know when you’re falling - racing heartbeat, accelerated breathing, giddy feelings of euphoria, increased energy, non-stop smiling, daydreaming and... the thought of leaving just doesn’t bear thinking about! Well, it’s only natural… there’s a lot to love in Port Stephens. For such a small dot on the global tourism map, mother nature has gifted Port Stephens with some pretty big attractions! Like….our magnificent Bay - twice the size of Sydney Harbour (and twice as beautiful!), our monumental sand dunes - the largest in the southern hemisphere (that’s big!) and we have a front row view of some of the largest creatures on earth (welcome to the Humpback highway). If size doesn’t matter that much to you, then you’re bound to love our little treasures. Hidden gems worth discovering like colourful underwater sea sponge gardens, the seal
colony on Broughton Island or our friendly local dolphins. This truly unique part of our planet, comprising around 1,000 square kilometres, has something to please just about every taste and budget. Camp out under a million stars, or perhaps you’d prefer to stay in five star luxury? Hoist a mainsheet and sail around the headland, or just let your head land on a 1000 thread count sheet? Climb over rocks and through scrub to reach a great view, or indulge in hot rocks and body scrub and reach for a Veuve? If you love sparkling waterways, pristine beaches, whales, dolphins, bushwalking, cycling, kayaking, sailing, golf, cafés, parasailing, fine dining, luxury spas, shopping, fresh produce, wineries, breweries, sliding down sand dunes, quad-biking, horse riding, waterfront dining, spectacular sunsets and friendly people…. then be prepared to fall in love with Port Stephens!

I LOVE HER JEWEL SEA …NOT TO MENTION HER BAYS, LAKES, RIVERS AND ESTUARIES! We are blessed to be located in the heart of one of Australia’s most extraordinary marine playgrounds… the Port Stephens - Great Lakes Marine Park. This rare and precious Marine Park encompasses a staggering 98,000 hectares of waterways including Port Stephens, the Karuah River, the Myall River, Myall and Smiths Lakes and all their creeks and tributaries. It is home to many species; dolphins, turtles, fish, seabirds, sponge gardens, mangroves, salt marshes, as well as some very special threatened species and indigenous heritage sites. This Marine Park represents an opportunity to protect some of the state’s most spectacular marine biodiversity and provides the perfect
playground for locals and visitors alike. It also plays an important role in the region’s economy supporting thriving ecotourism, aquaculture and fishing industries.
WET YOUR APPETITE... You’re invited to enjoy this natural playground but please leave it as you found it. Visit Broughton Island for a guided, overnight eco-camping adventure. Spend some time in the glorious Myall Lakes area - the state’s largest coastal lake system. Take a day cruise, see the dolphins, or marvel at the Humpback Whales as they make their way north. Sail to Cabbage Tree Island (home of the endangered Gould’s Petrel), snorkel near the state’s oldest lighthouse on Fingal Island, then
hoist sail and head home past volcanic islands and monumental headlands. You will be in awe! Dive right in to some of the best shore diving in NSW. Whether you’re an experienced scuba diver or it’s your first ever snorkel… the Marine Park boasts a range of dive sites to suit all levels. Like the popular Halifax Park… thriving with fish or Fly Point… famous for coral and nudibranchs and The Pipeline… a must see for macro divers and keen photographers. BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE! NATURE’S GIFT... WORIMI CONSERVATION LANDS & TOMAREE NATIONAL PARK
In a world of big things, there are few as striking and as monumental as the 30 metre high Stockton Bight Sand Dunes in the Worimi Conservation Lands at Port Stephens. These Lands are owned by the Traditional Aboriginal Owners, the Worimi people, and co-managed in partnership with National Parks and Wildlife Services. The 4,200 hectare Worimi Conservation Lands is managed to ensure the protection of the natural and cultural values of the Stockton Bight landscape, while providing access for visitors and promoting safe and sustainable recreational and commercial use. This significant place - home to an extraordinary number of ancient cultural sites - clearly demonstrates the historical importance of the Worimi Conservation Lands. Created over 100,000 years ago, these spectacular dunes continue to shift and change with time.
The Tomaree National Park encompasses coastal bushland, sand dunes, heathland, forests, over 20 kilometres of dramatic rocky coastline and stunning, white, sandy beaches. Whatever you do don’t miss the Tomaree Head Summit walk. It’s not difficult and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Port Stephens, the surrounding coast as well as Broughton, Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah Island nature reserves. While you’re there, check out the historic gun emplacements, part of Fort Tomaree built in 1941 as part of Australia’s World War II east coast defence system. Take the family for a picnic at Fishermans Bay Foreshore, catch a boat out to the Port Stephens Lighthouse; venture into the bush on a guided mountain bike tour; or enjoy one of the many walking trails (Find out more about bike and walking trails on page 16-17).
(Find out more about the dunes on page 14).

For an exhilarating way to explore the dunes, travel by off-road vehicle and surf down the 30 metre slopes on custom sandboards.
The ultimate experience for the adventurous... ride from bush to beach across the desert wilderness. Safe but sandsational!
I LOVE HER FAR HORIZONS SANDSATIONAL DUNES The Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, in the Worimi Conservation Lands, cover 4,200 hectares, 1,800 of which are forest, as well as 32kms of the longest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. These truly aweinspiring dunes reach heights of over 30 metres with slopes of up to 60 degrees to form a majestic, alien-like moonscape - a much sought after location for film makers around the globe. These Lands form part of an important cultural landscape with special significance for the Worimi people - the Traditional Owners. The land and waters have been used for many thousands of years for living, gathering foods and for cultural activities. Today the landscape
features an extraordinary number of culturally significant sites, many pre-dating the arrival of non-Aboriginal people. Thanks to the generosity of the Worimi people, we are invited to experience and enjoy this special place (with respect and without disturbing any Aboriginal sites). See this monumental sandscape for yourself by four wheel drive (with permits). Go fishing, surfing, or take an organised tour for quad biking, sandboarding, horse or camel riding. Enjoy a cultural tour including historic sites such as the Aboriginal middens or Tin City. Check out our dune adventure activities on pages 43-45.
SURFING FISHING BEACHFRONT RIDES
Relax and experience the peace and tranquility of riding horseback, or a sunset camel adventure through the bush, over the dunes and along the beach.
Long board, short board, kite board or boogie board... you’ll find the perfect break along the 32km stretch of beach from Stockton to Birubi.
Try beach fishing on Stockton Beach or book a fishing charter for a deep sea fishing adventure… if you’re game!

PROVIDORES & LOCAVORES TO ADORE TRAWLER TO TABLE Port Stephens is a foodie magnet with a wealth of fresh local produce to make a chef’s heart sing and a foodie’s taste buds dance. The region is renowned for sensational seafood all year round with Hunter River estuaries bursting with unique sweet prawns and glorious plump, tasty oysters. The Myall Lakes and River are teaming with blue swimmer and mud crabs and all kinds of fish and then, of course, Port Stephens lobsters! Families have fished these waters for generations and are proud of their heritage, their home and the fruits of their labour. Like John Hewitt Snr, who has worked these rivers and estuaries for 49 years and is proud to work side by side with his two sons as they deliver their prized catch seven days a week to the delight of a
growing number of notable chefs drawn to the region. Little Beach Boathouse owner and chef Luke Cameron is a self confessed food addict and locavore, spoilt for choice when designing his restaurant and catering seafood menus. “Working with fresh local produce is exciting and allows me to be innovative and creative with my dishes” says Luke. He himself is a keen diver and fisherman, who loves cooking with the local seafood. Port Stephens seafood comes from a pristine environment and is available fresh everyday - this is the freshest produce you can get! See more about fresh local food on page 50-51.

SAILS MEETING
Whoever said you can’t mix business with pleasure has never been to a Port Stephens business event!
Port Stephens is your destination for relaxation, recreation, education, contemplation, motivation and congregation!
Let’s face it - where else can delegates see historic fighter planes, slide down a sand dune, parasail across a bay, take a yoga class, enjoy fresh lobster on a yacht, watch dolphins dive, bushwalk to a spectacular lookout, taste beer and fresh macadamias and get up close and personal with a whale?
With accommodation options from safari tents and boot camp style to luxury apartments and swim out rooms - a superb range of offerings to challenge, pamper, motivate or reward - we can design the business event that puts the awe back into awesome.
Sure, that bridge in Sydney is impressive, Melbourne trams are quaint, and seals at Sea World are adorable... but just take a look at our sparkling Bay that’s twice the size of Sydney Harbour, the largest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere, or the amazing untrained seals that you can observe in their natural habitat. We really do have “beauty rich and rare”. It’s not just our good looks that attract the conference market, we’re also really good at providing memorable activities, brilliant accommodation and great service.
Easy to access, easy to organise, easy on the eye and easy on the budget. Our experienced ‘unconventional’ Business Events team will tailor a unique and ‘unconventional’ conference, meeting, incentive or event to suit your brief and your budget. For all you need to know about an unconventional business event in Port Stephens go to our comprehensive website www.portstephens.org.au/conferences

Worimi Conservation Lands Guudji-yiigu - a Worimi welcome Visit the Worimi Conservation Lands (WCL), an Aboriginal owned park co-managed by Worimi Traditional Owners and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The WCL includes Stockton Bight, dunes and forest, and contains an extraordinary number of Aboriginal cultural sites that pre-date the arrival of non-Aboriginal people. The 32 kilometre long stretch of beach, framed by some of the largest dunes in the southern hemisphere, make this a popular spot for four wheel driving, fishing, sightseeing, and picnicking with family and friends. A beach vehicle permit is required for all vehicles, and can be purchased at various service stations close to the park entrances at Anna Bay and Williamtown. Help conserve the Worimi Conservation Lands for future generations: All Aboriginal sites, plants, animals and historic sites protected
■
NSW road rules apply. 40 km/hr maximum speed
■
Do not drive over middens or shell accumulations - you may damage cultural sites
■
Do not drive on vegetation this helps keeps the dunes intact
