Getting Ready for a Change Any transition of job at any time of our career is not for the fainthearted. Transition is about change and change is happening to us all of the time; whether we like it or not. The passage of change can be invigorating. It can also be overwhelming. What is important is to have the time to think, to manage and to control this process as best we can. In order to help you manage your transition we have put together this worksheet. It aims to help you to better understand the context for your change, the impact that it will have on you and also on those around you and who care about you. We will explore the emotional considerations that may arise and also look at ways to help you outline a plan to help you move forwards. There are 4 simple steps to help you be more prepared for your change: 1) Understanding the situation 2) Managing the impact 3) Dealing with emotional considerations 4) Moving on professionally

Step one: Understanding the situation The first step is to get a better understanding of what is going on. The big question is:

W hat is it that you need to understand in order to make this change a positive one for you?

This question needs to be answered in as much detail as possible in order to enable you to move on productively and in a positive way.

W hat’s possible?

H ow can I shape this?

Step two: Managing the impact Inevitably, your transition is going to impact on more than purely you. Think about whom else is going to be involved in this process and how it is going to impact on them. Perhaps it’s your family, your partner, people who care about you or those immediately around you. Your colleagues may be impacted by this shift and so it’s important to think about everyone who is likely to be affected by your transition so that you can alleviate any negative impact and have more control over the situation.
