Working from home, schooling from home, and other productive activities have become commonplace. POVI, *Habit-at,E & th
Per↘ spec-tive>>>
Before talking about Posko Visual, what makes “habit-at” exciting and able to be the big theme for Posko Visual 2021?
A word can have various meanings and interpretations. The term ‘habit-at,’ some people define it simply as a habit or a place, while the others probably define it even broader. Their view in “habit-at” is interesting to discuss since it draws their responses to the world dynamics. In this article, let us dig more into the hidden “habitat” on their minds.
The chair of Posko Visual 2021, Renaldy stated, “a culture always happens to be a unique and compelling topic for us, for DKV’s mates are coming from various backgrounds. Thinking about it, we initiated to make it “culture” the theme for this exhibition. The good thing is Posko Visual 2021 committees challenged us to bring daily culture which is close with the students’ personalities, are their daily activities.” By having that reason, we brought “Habit-at” as the big theme in POVI 2021. Posko Visual 2021 is an exhibition held by DKV students in 2018. Posko Visual is an annual exhibition by DKV UM generations annually. Talking about the exhibition, it may sound familiar to many people. An exhibition is a place for us to dedicate ourselves to art and design to show our abilities, earn money, or spend time as a hobby. The main thing from the exhibition is a close matter in our lives; if it is so, we make it a “habit,” If the
spread to Malang Raya. After that, POVI was a vacuum since the curriculum had changed, so the exhibition subject was not compulsory. Thus, the exhibition was an independent exhibition.” He added.
right? exhibitions become a habit for us, there is only a slight difference with Posko Visual. Reading the name of this exhibition is clear to some of you that there are two combined words. However, commoners will question this thing. So, what is Posko Visual? How did history begin? Andreas Syah Palevi, one of the academics in DKV UM who has been the coach of Posko Visual for four years, shared his story. “POVI began in 2013 and was coordinated by DKV batch 2010. In that year, POVI conducted an exhibition to gather portfolios and focused on public service advertisement. It was the effect of subject DKV 5 (Portfolio). The students were required to a new design simulated with clients. Since the theme was public service advertisement, the term “posko” (organization/community) was used. There were some issues offered, such as environment, education, disaster, and so on. POVI 2010 was successful for it was the debut, and the venue was Graha Cakrawala.” He explained. “The second Posko Visual was held in 2014 and conducted in Digital Innovation Lounge (DILo). It was the first co-working space in Malang, and it had the same theme as the previous year. The third POVI was in Among Tani – Batu, and it published a wider and more professional theme than the previous one, such as having a seminar and a competition. The scope was
“Posko Visual had just begun again in 2018. The committees discussed the exhibition’s name whether or not the name stayed the same as Posko Visual. It referred to continuing the last name because it had been a renowned name for the exhibition and an icon for DKV UM. Nevertheless, it contained a risk, which was benchmarked with the previous POVI. It was tough, but the students could accept it. Finally, POVI 2018 was held in Among Tani – Batu. The exhibition in 2018 had a new concept, was focusing on the distribution of portfolio types. This new concept tended to be preferred by the participants because it could cover the potential of their diverse talents, and it is maintained until now.” He said. In 2019, POVI is growing, and we have high interest to invite other universities, and we decided to make it (the exhibition) bigger, the name was iconic. The activity concepts are more varied. There was a seminar and a community service (coming and giving something to society in Dinoyo, Malang) and inviting an international campus in Taiwan. Thus, POVI has become a pride of DKV UM.” “In 2020, POVI had a more advanced concept, but sadly the pandemic happened, and the spirit had gone. The offline exhibition was canceled. Finally, we discussed it seriously in June and changed the concept into an online presentation. Bringing back the spirit to hold an online array was not easy. We know that the online exhibition was challenging, and our effort was at the lowest level. However, we did regular meetings to succeed in the event. Adding the step, we started to invite a prominent designer, like Eric Wijaya, who was challenging to reach out, and he
agreed to participate in this online exhibition. An online event is not forever a challenge as long as we take advantage of the situation to ease everything. Yet, the students still demanded an offline exhibition, and they, in the end, decided to create a main agenda offline, which was a transformation coalition. It turned to create a significant impact and made it an awaited event by many people. “ He explained enthusiastically. “To sum up, POVI has upgraded year by year. Besides it (the exhibition) is a course. It is finishing the project and a farewell event for DKV students before they finish their thesis and graduate from the university. It is also an icon for them. I hope, this year which is still in pandemic time, POVI still has an update. I underline and support the students that POVI 2021 is going internationally by having International Poster Call, and it becomes an ambitious update. Maybe, if it had not been the pandemic, we would have been burdensome since we had to send our works abroad, prepare the properties, and so forth. Thus, we take advantage of this condition to make the exhibition offline as the other countries do. So, POVI starts from a final project, and then it becomes an icon for DKV UM.” He added. Cultures can be formed from habitual action. Indonesia is rich with culture, and culture discussion is a never-ending matter in this country. We have learned about culture since we were kids, and as we grow older, the insight about culture increases. As a student of DKV, we also wrestle with culture in working an art.
Then, how is the art climate in Indonesia? What should we stand or repair from the art climate in Indonesia? Dhara Alim Cendekia, one of the academics in Visual Communication Design Department, Universitas Negeri Malang, pronounced, “What I want to maintain (actually) is the academics in all universities realize about traditional design potential. They gained awareness to keep traditional designs sustainable. Nowadays, we try to maintain or transform traditional design into an acceptable way for the recent generation. I believe that numbers of universities have lead that way.” “Meanwhile what I want to fix is the competition climate of design working environtment. May I tell a story? Maybe it happens to all design business transactions in Indonesia. Nonetheless, probably some people experience the same thing as me. When I worked for a creative agency in Surabaya, I got pitching often. As the government’s rule, we should present our work, contest it, and they will choose which of which to get the tender.” Dhara explained.
Thus, in my opinion, attitude, business etiquette, and awareness in keeping our intellectual property rights are indeed essential. If we do not fight for it, irresponsible people can misuse it. That needs to be repaired in Indonesia. It needs to be immediately improved. That is the reason why design communities and associations appeared to reduce inappropriate actions. Through that, we might able to protect our profession from such bad practices. However, there will be many obstacles in any way of the design industries, To conclude, what I want to maintain is academic climate to preserve traditional culture and what I want to repair is healthy competition in the creative industry.” She added.
Talking about traditional design, we, as UM students, who stay in Malang, absolutely are close with “culture” or the habits in Malang. Then, what did the student say about the creative industry in Malang? Octa, a student of DKV 2018, stated, “There are many cultures we can see clearly in Malang, and one of them is “walikan” (reversed) language we use in our daily. This culture is implemented in online platforms to broadcasting, like in Bayu Skak’s movie, the viral movie in Indonesia, even in foreign countries. It turns out that something we do daily can have a big impact, moreover when we pack it as interesting as possible and make people think it is hilarious. Besides, it makes outsiders (out of Malang) curious about how Malang is. Malang culture is not only about Topeng Malangan or Batik, but also the language.” She articulated.
That is the summary of Posko Visual 2021 and the designing world that has become our “habit-at” at the moment. We hope that this article can give you fruitful insight. Enjoy it!

She continued to explain, “One day, we were doing our pitching for Company A’s tender, we designed it with a big effort, and when we had to present it, and value from our point of view, we did an amazing work among another contestant. Nevertheless, the winner was the other contestants. We accepted the decision while realizing that to win or to lose is reasonable in any tender. But after a while, we heard a news that the design by the earlier winner studio was looking similar to ours, despite that we lose. It can be said that they unfairly made us ‘lose’, but then stole our design. I was startled. I thought there was no such thing in this design stuff.
