The platform POSTFOSSIL is a collective of designers who create and produce objects for the home in the context of the resources problematic and in light of the postfossil era. POSTFOSSIL’s work is based on three key aspects. First POSTFOSSIL as a platform and through exchange tries to conduct research on materials that assimilate a philosophy for an oilless future. The second aspect is the production; POSTFOSSIL produces its own collection. The decision to produce themselves allows POSTFOSSIL not only to retain the design, but also to manage the production and distribution; another step implementing the postfossil approach.
Philosophy
The third aspect is to engage with the user and the transmission of the postfossil thought itself. To this end POSTFOSSIL exchanges ideas with users, leads public discourse and holds workshops.

Designer: Thomas Walde Š2012 Postfossil This sculptural piece of furniture called Der Bremer represents that watershed event in our history forecast by many scientists; fossil fuels gave our civilisation such a boost that long-standing traditions have been supplanted by new technologies and inventions. The Bremer clothes airer leads the way in resisting the excessive use of the washing machine, which probably does more to create dirty water than remove dirt from clothes. thomas@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

Designer: Daniel Gafner ©2012 Postfossil Locomotion and the Parrot of conspiracy are two wooden models that refer to icons of mobility. The steam locomotive the Rocket was developed by George and Robert Stephenson in 1829. The Saturn V rocket was developed by Wernher von Braun for Nasa. The moon landing was presented as a “big step for Mankind” to great media spectacle. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission Neil Armstrong quoted Wilbur Wright: “I know of only one bird–the parrot–that talks, and it can’t fly high!” daniel@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

“for seasons” is a set of three high quality chopping boards and a trivet. There is an item for each season. Material and format have been chosen appropriately to what is getting cut in the according time of the year. On the backside of each board there is an engraved list of all vegetables and fruits that are seasonal in this time of the year. Of course all boards can be used in any time, but be aware that there is one specific season for every vegetable and every fruit. anna@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

Cycling is again enjoying increasing popularity in European cities. With a level of efficiency of about 95%, the bicycle is the most ecological way of getting around there is. The Shoes, Books and a Bike stand puts the wonder machine on a platform, frames the bicycle and gives it a deserved place of honour in the apartment. Like a trophy in a glass jar, the bicycle represents sporting activity, balance and health. The stand itself is constructed of the simplest of materials such as fir, screws, steel and coconut fibre. thomas@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

With the amulet filled with crude oil, a material becomes jewellery that is usually associated with other connotations. This ‘misappropriation’ begs the question “treasure or trash?” The answer lies in the future.

De Blanco is a series of porcelain cones that gives us freedom of choice in their function: lying down, the cones give the impression of being a market bag or fruit bowl; when stood on end, like a top, when put in a glass, they look like a vase for flowers etc… The cones were all cast from a single basic mould. The cones were made in various sizes and angles by adjusting the cut of the opening. christine@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

„First Light“ is a sophisticated reading lamp which is powered through a weight and cog wheels just like a clockwork. The power does not come from the power socket but is produced directly in the body. This traditional mechanism seems to be floating between the folded rack. Through the glassy lampshade the movement of the cog wheels is set in scene nicely. „first light“ is a lamp for bon vivants who like the conscious act of winding up.

The Objects for the Turn trilogy symbolises central concepts for a new cultural era already heralded. Our times are characterised by the rediscovery of local, digital and global networks, as well as a careful and sustainable relationship with nature. The object Cylinders describes the local community, which can benefit from the sharing of know-how and the lending and production of goods. The object Satellite stands for the global and digital exchange of knowledge and ideas and for the interconnectedness of different communities. The object Cone, turned to a point, symbolises Nature’s great vulnerability as well as her destructiveness. The three objects are solely representative of contemporary thought and draw on the book and cultural manifest of Michael Schwarz and Joost Elfers Sustainism is the new Modernism. Madame tutu is not the first stool with container, but certainly the first wicker basket with legs. Thanks to the design, the wicker basket either becomes a stool or can be used for household storage. The two contradicting materials wicker and metal are connected creatively together, but can be completely separated at any time. In its simplicity madame tutu contains the meeting of hand craft and industrial production – a challenge, a utopia for today? claudia@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

With the container system „1530“ you can create a variety of diverse structures, from a room partitioning to a coffee table – all is possible. The simple container elements made from French sea pine plywood are based on a grid of 15 and 30 centimetres. The four aligned formats can house various sizes of books, media and other objects. The profiled container edges allow a toolless yet extraordinarily and stable interlinkage with standard foldback clips. The containers are placed on a matching base element and are thus better protected from dirt and dust daniel@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch
