The platform POSTFOSSIL is a collective of designers who create and produce objects for the home in the context of the resources problematic and in light of the postfossil era. POSTFOSSIL’s work is based on three key aspects. First POSTFOSSIL as a platform and through exchange tries to conduct research on materials that assimilate a philosophy for an oilless future. The second aspect is the production; POSTFOSSIL produces its own collection. The decision to produce themselves allows POSTFOSSIL not only to retain the design, but also to manage the production and distribution; another step implementing the postfossil approach.
Philosophy
The third aspect is to engage with the user and the transmission of the postfossil thought itself. To this end POSTFOSSIL exchanges ideas with users, leads public discourse and holds workshops.
2013 Milano Zona Lambrate
April 2013 POSTFOSSIL is with two new products part of the exhibition “Le petit GRAND” during the Milan furniture fair. Exhibiton “Le petit GRAND“ Where: zona Lambrate, Via Sbodio 30/6, I-20134 Milano When: 09th April – 14th April 2013, 11h – 19h, Opening event: 10th April, 18h – 22h Press Preview: Monday, 8th April, 15h – 19h This year POSTFOSSIL shows the mobile “Joule” and the money box “Cagnotte” two new products, which both put the spotlight on the reflection of our acting. This topic fits the philosophy of the exhibition “Le petit Grand”. The hanging sculpture “Joule” is an object of thoughts on the fragile interrelations within nature, the balance of the economy, and balance in our lives. The fragile dependency of weight and counterweight, the effect of the small on the whole system; in short, cause and effect are played out
poetically in this work. “Cagnotte” is a money box which shows that saving doesn‘t mean sacrifice; it‘s a challenge to ration available resources in a sensible way. Designtalk “Social and ecological responsibility in productdesign” Swiss Corner, Istituto Svizzero di Milano During the exhibition “INSIGHT VIEW” of INCH Furniture in the Swiss Institute in Milan, POSTFOSSIL is invited for the designtalk “Social and ecological responsibility in Productdesign”. Participants: Yves Raschle and Thomas Wuethrich of INCH Furniture, Joerg Boner, Otto Glaeser of ClassiCon Switzerland and Postfossil. Host: Meret Ernst of Hochparterre Magazine. POSTFOSSIL advocates for design to fulfil its sustainable task; to become more resource-conscious and to encourage change before the postfossil era changes us.

„Objects for the turn" – Product information
The Objects for the Turn trilogy symbolises central concepts for a new cultural era already heralded. Our times are characterised by the rediscovery of local, digital and global networks, as well as a careful and sustainable relationship with nature. The object Cylinders describes the local community, which can benefit from the sharing of know-how and the lending and production of goods. The object Satellite stands for the global and digital exchange of knowledge and ideas and for the interconnectedness of different communities. The object Cone, turned to a point, symbolises Nature’s great vulnerability as well as her destructiveness. The three objects are solely representative of contemporary thought and draw on the book and cultural manifest of Michael Schwarz and Joost Elfers Sustainism is the new Modernism.

An utopia is wishful thinking or a vision of the future, while reality is conveniently forgotten either consciously or unconsciously. A utopian story is set in an abstract world, in which an ideal counter-image is usually created in direct opposition to current social, political, and economic circumstances. The objects exhibited in the exhibition ‘Trattoria Utopia’ provoke discussion, encourage questions and allow new utopias to arise. De Blanco is a series of porcelain cones that gives us freedom of choice in their function: lying down, the cones give the impression of being a market bag or fruit bowl; when stood on end, like a top, when put in a glass, they look like a vase for flowers etc… The cones were all cast from a single basic mould. The cones were made in various sizes and angles by adjusting the cut of the opening. christine@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

For the Trattoria Utopia, Anna Blattert, Postfossil has reinterpreted the traditional rush seated chair, that you often find in trattorias. The six-cornered shape demands a further development of the conventional rush weave, which is usually based on a rectangle. This further development results in a surprising effect: The seat, woven in one piece, creates three rhomboid shapes. Paper twine has been used as weaving material. This is extremely sturdy and can be wiped off with a damp cloth. The woven frame is set in a lower support of the same shape. The generous, low-set seat provides comfortable seating for one or more people

Democratic Chess The game of chess as model for a utopian society
Democratic Chess can be played in one of three ways: _normal chess (monarchy) with the traditional rules _the new, democratic chess, with flexible values and play scenarios _A constructive children’s game Material: maple wood, in coloured varnish fh@florianhauswirth.ch www.florianhauswirth.ch
"Democratic Chess" – Product information
The scenario described by a traditional chess set consists of a monarchy with entourage including a castle/city, soldiers/knights and pawns/people. It is a game of strategy, whereby planning for the next move is essential. Chess – ‘The Royal Game’ – has been played since time immemorial in the most varied cultures from India to Persia, Russia, to the Vikings. Nowadays, computers are increasingly playing alongside chess masters. Democratic Chess is a new interpretation of the traditional chess game. Not only the form, but also the function of the figures has been re-interpreted, which means that the flow and content of the game can change. Democratic Chess increases the unpredictability of the game, creating totally new and surprising situations. New ways of playing are made possible by the shape of the figures. Pieces taken are not eliminated but stacked, thus creating new figures, which have more abilities. For example, a knight or even a second queen can be made from several pawns etc.

Pli - A comfortable folding chair that folds to 8 cm
Material: Wood, natural adhesive such as fish glue, leather (vegetable tanned), natural latex, metal pins fh@florianhauswirth.ch www.florianhauswirth.ch
"Pli" – Product information
The combination of moulded plywood and solid wood allow a great structure. The joints flow elegantly, partly unusually, into each other; the surfaces of the plywood and the volume of the wood structure, and the various flows of fibre. A comfort version of Pli has a soft, vegetable tanned leather cushion. Moulded plywood is created in a very efficient production process: Wood layers are peeled from the log (peeled veneer), thus creating very little fretting. After bonding, the individual wood layers jam against each other, so the seat and back sections become both rigid and elastic due to its physical properties. Fish glue is perfect as a flexible adhesive for this type of production. The production techniques involved in making this chair are inspired by old methods that have been re-interpreted.

Fork, Knife and Spoon and Personal Cutlery The Juri cutlery set addresses the current topic of meat eating, controversial because of energy consumption issues. In the basic range, the fork contains one fifth zinc and the knife is deliberately not polished, which makes eating meat difficult and brings the issue to the fore. The spoon‘s hand-embossed ladle fulfils the desire for careful hand-finishing; most of the hand working on the cutlery is especially visible.
Personal Cutlery In earlier times, people carried their own cutlery – consisting usually only of a knife – with them at all times. As a result of the increase in personal mobility, personal cutlery makes more sense in today‘s society, since we often make food and eat away from home. 5 Forks on the Subject of Critical Design The five-part fork series goes a step further than the standard set by making it totally impossible to skewer meat with the extreme version. Noteworthy is the connection between the functional design of the cutlery and the preparation of foodstuffs. In contrast to Asian cooking, European cuisine prefers to have a piece of meat cut into bite-sized pieces on the plate rather than in the kitchen. The product stands for a vision of a meat-free diet in Europe. Material: chrome steel
5 Forks on the Subject of Slow Food The scaling of the ladle (the lower part of the spoon), is a study in slowing down in the context of eating. In addition to sustainable agriculture and traditional food trades, the time spent eating has a great influence on our enjoyment of food and on our health.

The Juri plate addresses the quality of slowness in eating and so joins the slow-food movement. - The relationship to production processes of foodstuffs and objects from our daily environment is for the most part lost through industrial and rapid production. The somewhat taller, hand-turned plate Juri is intended to strengthen the meaning and provenance of feedstuffs and at the same time shows one of humanity‘s first handicrafts: pottery. The very restrained, graphical design in the bowl section shows, in the form of an abstract clock, that eating more slowly is very healthy, as the feeling of fullness comes after only about twenty minutes. Milan 2010 The trained industrial designers work in different cities. The collective work happens spontaneously and without a prescribed form. What looks like chaos at first sight is a consciously chosen method. Ideas are transmitted immediately and directly using blogs. Ideas are dispersed and elaborated as impulses. This has enabled the collective of young designers to establish a way of working across borders which has proven effective and satisfactory for them. POSTFOSSIL regards itself as a platform that works together with companies, institutions, and other designers. What is the aim of the young designers? The answer is simple: they want to raise awareness. Not with a megaphone, but rather with quiet, subtle remarks artfully incorporated into their objects. POSTFOSSIL’s intention is not to preach, only to ask questions and to look for answers in as public a way as possible, over and over again, in order to broaden design’s horizon and for it to fulfil its sustainable role. They want to encourage responsible
interaction with resources and to encourage change on our part before the postfossil age changes us. Members of the POSTFOSSIL collection 2010: Anna Blattert, Christine Birkhoven, Daniel Gafner, Florian Hauswirth, Claudia Heiniger, Thomas Walde

Just Wood Chair 2 is the evolution of the world’s first chair made exclusively from wood through the application of the wood-joining technique. This chair consists exclusively of wood and does not require glue in its assembly. The heat generated by placing the dowels releases adhesives present in the wood itself – lignin and hemicellulose – forming a substantial welded bond in seconds. The constructive design of JWC2 plays with separations and connections, formal amalgamation as well as with chequered design. You can stack up to four chairs. To the stone age and back: this (limited) series wants to take the preparation of foodstuffs to a sapient yet modern level. Material and craft meet each other, irreplaceable in their honesty and individuality. The objects are intuitive in their application, there are no directions for use or wrong ways of using them. These kitchen utensils want to be handled: to feel the heavy, cold material and to recognise its handiness will turn the preparation of food into an irresistible pleasure.

The chair, through its form, aims to encourage reflection and meditation which in this day and age is often suppressed by other activities. The reduction to structure and naked realisation activate the user and their thoughts. The size and high armrests inspired by Corbusier’s LC2 typologically bring to mind an easy chair, however, it does not allow for much more than to sit down in it, meditate or open a book. The element in front of it corresponds to an ottoman which can also be used as repository or as a stool. Steel pipe, black powder coated thomas@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

Sgabello is a simple object which, through its asymmetrical form, indicates the different possibilities for use. Both the materials sheet metal and solid wood are merged both structurally and functionally, whilst at the same time remaining completely separable. The interplay of material thickness and profile gives the frame its structure. The wood formally unbalances the frame and invites the user to explore the different functions of the object. Once Sgabello is unbalanced, new functions emerge, such as a side table (???? – beistellobjekt ist unmoeglich zu uebersetzen...) or a bracket for book storage. The shadows created through the metal frame, the colour of hte wood and the combination of hte two materials award Sgabello its own elegance. Material: Metal frame, lackered in white. VASA, a flowerpot for herbs. Cooking with herbs spices up life, creates breaks in the hectic everyday life, acts sustainably. In spring the herbs grow in VASA on the balcony. During the months of summer and autumn they blossom and are cut for cooking. During the winter months VASA, including the greens, moves to the kitchen – you keep cooking with taste. VASA is unbalanced and falls over unless coupled magnetically with a second form. VASA is an invitation to spice up life with herbs – but not just one herb. Inside the porcelain form are magnets which allow for ‚docking‘ of as many herbs as possible. VASA is completed with a saucer which equally docks onto the pot magnetically. DMY Berlin - Dinner

Save Our Souls
SAVE OUR SOULS The spinning top shows a tatooed Earth. As in seafaring, the tattoos tell stories and visualize desires and fears. POSTFOSSIL invites you to spin the top and let your thoughts circulate for a moment. Save The desert island motif symbolises arrival in a garden paradise; the reward at the end of a long journey full of deprivations. POSTFOSSIL uses the burning palm tree to suggest an arrival in what appears to be not such a paradise after all. The Pole Star In seafaring, the polestar serves as a means of determining the compass points; it shows the way. Farewell! Bon voyage aboard the ship to the future. Our The anchor conventionally represents stability and a firm foundation. Sailors crossing the Atlantic have themselves tatooed with an anchor.
POSTFOSSIL has broken the chain, thus symbolising uprooting and drifting into an uncertain future, which however opens up all possibilities. Souls Mermaids are symbols of strong female energy. They use their beguiling beauty to seduce anyone they encounter. POSTFOSSIL draws attention to the seductive and dangerous nature of oil. The Earth‘s blood–the source of modern day prosperity–is rapidly becoming a catastrophic poison. Or will we be able to resist further temptation? Produced by POSTFOSSIL for Einzigart. Salone Satellite Milano
Milan 2009 Following their successful appearance at the SaloneSatellite at the Milan furniture fair last year, the designers of the POSTFOSSIL platform will again be exhibiting in Milan. A central theme is the question of design’s purpose in a post-fossil age. With this in mind, the designers will be discussing the subject of the SaloneSatellite: Designing Wellness. They have created furniture and living accessories that feature unexpected product solutions. With its enquiry, the POSTFOSSIL platform has opened up an important issue. This was demonstrated by the receipt of the Designreport Award 08 for the First Light lamp at last year’s SaloneSatellite, and the Swiss bronzener Hase award for Die Besten. The exhibitions in Milan and in Norway at the ‘a world of folk’ in Stavanger generated discussion and were well received by international design magazines. Their products were also publicised in the book Desire (published by Gestalten) and in “Limited Edition” by Sophie Lovell. Careful handling of resources has additional significance in current times. Alternative possibilities for sustainable use of
materials and resources are being discussed. The furniture and living accessories by POSTFOSSIL presented in Milan reflect this discussion while at the same time showing that these kinds of solutions do not mean limitations in product design. Much more than this, the designers want to draw attention with their objects to a lifestyle of greater awareness, which will also have a long -term effect on the user’s well being. The POSTFOSSIL designers were exhibiting objects in Milan which feature carefully worked solutions both from a formal perspective as well as in relation to the material used. The furniture and living accessories reflect each varying aspect of a post-fossil age. The POSTFOSSIL platform at the SaloneSatellite 2009: 22. – 27. Production: Prototype
The lamps Sabooh and Mitsu are showing that energy saving LED technology can also be used in the home. Inspired by oriental lanterns, the translucent porcelain shades give off a warm, indirect light. The golden decoration on the inside of the shade serves as a reflector, as well as a conductor from cable to bulb. The base of the standing lamp with its octagonal profile, made of durable oak, holds the shade in the correct position thanks to its outstretched arm. The pendant light is surprising in its simplicity. The ceiling serves as a point of support for the boom. By slightly pulling the hanging cable the shade can be swung through 360°. The shades Sabooh and Mitsu are hung over the stand and the boom like lanterns and can be easily exchanged with each other and hung or lay in any other position. The rather flat shade Mitsu radiates light more widely and is ideal as a hanging light over a dining table or as general room light. The high shade Sabooh throws the light more directly and is therefore especially well suited as a reading light. The fireside companion set Souffleur Ramón comprises a bellows and a firewood basket, both of wood and leather. A bellows is not only a beautiful object with a homely character, but also a reflection of the energy needed to kindle a fire. It invites one to take time to make a really good fire that produces a good heat. Bellows have long been disappearing into obscurity, either because of modern heating technology or because today there are supposedly quicker methods of ignition (such as firelighters). However, firelighters are often unhealthy and environmentally unfriendly. This new design breathes new life into the bellows and shows that Souffleur Ramón is not only a more attractive way to kindle a fire, but is also environmentally friendly and saves resources. The couch bivano is a solution for all those people who do not dispose of a lot of space in their apartments since it uses very little material and space. The frame is made of multilayer boards. The individual pieces can be taken from only one board in an efficient way and this allows to reduce the consumption of material already in the cutting phase. The stringing with elastic belts creates a very comfortable albeit materially reduced seating space, which adapts slightly to the body when seated. The printed felt belts allegorically stand for the cushioning which is completely absent in bivano. The conscious use of material and the corresponding design are an answer to the post fossil era. Whilst seated on bivano you can comfortably talk about the current times.

The postfossil tealight – inspired by the traditional envelope tealight spans, carries and shelters the candle, as the envelope does with the letter. The material – paper – is folded to a stable structure. The buttstraps connect together by folding up and dampening. A simple creative process we all know from daily life. Thus the formed ripped surface lends the tealight structure and stability. The paper gives harmony and power to the candlelight and protects it from the wind. The flat origin is easy to handle for transport.

Vase and fruit bowl inspired by a mirrored silhouette The idea behind doubleface’s design is both simple and intriguing. The outline determines the form of the collection, a fruit bowl and a vase. Both objects are made of ceramic and cherry wood. The objects’ form plays with symmetrical lines as well as natural complementary structures. However, at the same time, the bodies are clearly separated in terms of material and function. The objects are versatile: the bottom of the fruit bowl can be used as chopping board. Design details always have a function: the groove that serves as a guide when assembling the bowl catches the fruit’s juice. The singlevase was expressly designed for a single flower. The form both supports and frames the content. The lower part is made of ceramic and can easily be cleaned or filled with water. A wet stalk is not good for various flowers, which is why the water should be exchanged regularly. doubleface is a still of practical objects with modest demands and the objective to enrich daily life with beauty and practicality. Salt and pepper have to be on the table; together. The salt and pepper mills doublefacette complement one another both in a functional and in a formal way. Inspired by an outline, the forms, as the contents, are complementary. The inverted forms and the interplay of the materials lend attention to an object of utility – an extraordinary haptic experience. Design reflects the use. According to the parsimonious way of using salt, the diameter of the salt mill is small. The pepper mill instead spins you twice. Once spices were rare and precious goods, in particular salt, reserved only for rich people. doublefacette accommodates history and tradition; proudly carrying its contents. doublefacette is a figurative object of utility, it awaits either on the shelf or already on the table for serving us several times a day. Kollektion 2008 Salone Satellite Milano
The SaloneSatellite at the design fair 2008 in Milan is a meeting place for young designers par excellence. The POSTFOSSIL platform is among the invitees this year. The ten designers present their forward-thinking range of weird and wonderful objects designed for everyday living in a not-so-distant future. In an age of increased reliance on carbon emitting technology and a rapidly depleting natural resource pool, POSTFOSSIL address the question– How will we live in a post-fossil fuel age? A year ago, a collective of ten young Swiss designers founded the group POSTFOSSIL. POSTFOSSIL provides a platform on which designers can regularly get together and discuss the current issues surrounding design and the ways in which they can respond to these issues. A recurring theme began to emerge, centering around the handling of resources in a post-fossil fuel future. It was decided that this should be the focus of their exhibition in Milan. The importance of this topic is reflected in the SaloneSatellite’s guiding theme for this year: “Viva il verde! Go green!“
Deviating from the frequently asked question of alternative materials or new production methods, the designers of the POSTFOSSIL platform are pursuing. The objects designed for Milan are intended to encourage everyone to reconsider their own behavior and to be more responsible for their actions. The young designers achieve this by examining and re-assessing the use of day-to-day objects. Their objects are involved in daily life, attract attention and demand reconsideration of their usual treatment. It is subtle criticism in detail, drawing out the issue of a sustainable treatment of resources. POSTFOSSIL aims to influence our living environment by strengthening the relationship between user and object. Based on this central idea, ten objects have been created which engage with different aspects of the topic ‘postfossil’. The collection symbolizes the personal fitness and satisfies the again fashionable drive for movement. The postfossil age will enhance the personal energy consciousness and we are in search of a more efficient and healthy way of interacting with our environment. This path is being supported by the design as well as the choice of materials. The forms are reduced and limited to the essential. The materials are of natural origin and traditional techniques are combined with contemporary design. fh@florianhauswirth.ch and thomas@postfossil.ch

The concept for the lamp is based on the archaic hand-lamp, which was used for illumination moving from one room to another at home in the dark. The idea behind it is to give the user a clear message through the product. The form language is unmistakable; the lamp can be taken anywhere in the house e.g. at night to the kitchen or toilet. The lamp does not need to be switched on anywhere, because good night eileen recharges on its base and continues to shine as soon as it leaves the base for a view minutes before slowly fading. The ceramic material plays an important role by transporting the user back to a time of candle-holders and hand-lamps by means of its appearance and feel and primarily by the way it is held. The lamp is also equipped with modern LED technology which allows low use of electricity. Electricity is transferred between the lamp and its base via magnetic induction, i.e. there is no visible connection. christine@postfossil.ch www.postfossil.ch

Through this multifaceted use the individual use of “fam” is enhanced and through the consistent design as well as choice of material „fam“ becomes a sustainable product for most of us. „fam“ is made from pure wollen felt.
