Saskatoon What’s all the buzz about?

Saskatoon continues to generate national buzz as one of the country’s top places to explore in 2016!

W

West Jet Magazine included Saskatoon in the “Where to Go in 2016” edition of their inflight magazine, saying “This prairie city is having its moment. The food and arts scenes are booming as young Saskatonians build up downtown-area neighbourhoods like historic Riversdale with vintage guitar shops, design boutiques, cool cafes and award-winning farm-fresh restaurants.” The popular travel site Vacay.ca also highlighted Saskatoon in their “20 Best Places to Visit in Canada” feature, praising the city’s art, food, music and scenery. The website gave shout-outs to the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival (celebrating 30 years); the orchard, gardens and cidery at the Glen at Crossmount; the opening of Little Grouse on the Prairie by Top Chef Canada winner Dale MacKay; and the 2017 launch of the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan, which Vacay.ca says is destined to be “a game-changer in the landscape of modern art in Canada.”

What’s contributing to Saskatoon’s cool vibe? “Our city is filled with young entrepreneurs who are really into the local scene. They’ve taken ownership of it; they’re always making things happen. They’re not afraid to try new things. New festivals, new activities, new ways to use the river are popping up all the time,” says Tracey Thompson, leisure marketing coordinator with Tourism Saskatoon. “Saskatoon is a great place to be in the summer. We’ve got so many high energy events. There’s always something exciting to do,” says Trevor Broughton, Tourism Saskatoon’s director of marketing.

Open May 7 (Wed & Sat 9-1), the market is a family (and pet) friendly and community-gathering spot found at City Square Plaza. In addition to the markets, enjoy on-site food trucks, festivals and events that happen regularly. You can count on day-long action, fine food, shopping and more during the summer in downtown Regina. Returning this year is the popular Cinema Under the Stars (July/August), where moviegoers convene in the heart of downtown, Victoria Park, while taking in a movie outdoors under the night sky.

Though Reginans came out of hibernation earlier than normal this spring, summer in the Queen City is a time where citizens and visitors alike enjoy lively offerings from festivals events to outdoor markets, patio dining and more. Downtown Regina beams with vibrancy and citywide attractions are chock full of summer specific fun.

Performances galore

Located in the Cathedral area on the corner of 13th Avenue and Angus Street, the Artesian modern arts venue, which was formerly Calvary Evangelical Church, is an intimate and warm space offering a great selection of events. Saskhiker.com’s Jay Brown shares three great Saskatchewan trails for the beginner, intermediate and avid hiker : Sand Dune Trail in Douglas Provincial Park (beginner) Found on the southwest shores of Lake Diefenbaker, the Sand Dune trail is one anyone can do, even children. An ideal location for bird watching, along the way hikers can also expect to come across an active sand dune site – complete with fine sand, exposed dunes and ripples, low lying shrubs and vegetation, and the strange appearance of stunted trees that grow in the sand. The sand dune trail at Douglas Provincial Park is ideal for novice hikers or for a family outing.

Why not get out of your comfort zone, and try a piece of the 100 kilometer section of the TC Trail on the South Saskatchewan River. This premium Saskatchewan Blueway was dedicated in June of 2015 as the “Chief Whitecap Waterway.” Paddle boards, canoes and Kayaks are available to rent at the Pavilion on Gardiner Dam. Cypress Hills Trails (intermediate) Find some challenge amidst the lodgepole pines of the beautiful Cypress Hills area. Hike or bike the trails to discover rewarding views along the way in a region with the highest elevation east of the Rocky Mountains. Consider Mystery Trail, a moderate to hard 7km circuit that begins and ends in the forest, but not before winding through mixed open prairies. The Cypress Hills area also features other hikes to choose from including backcountry trails.

The trail network at Meadow Lake Provincial Park extends 120 km from east to west.

Boreal Trail in Meadow Lake (advanced) One of the few trails in the province designed to be a back country hiking trail, the scenic Boreal Trail, found deep in nature in the heart of the boreal forest, features towering trees and runs east to west 120km along the river in Meadow Lake Provincial Park. Experienced hikers take the time to back country camp along the way.

This year’s tourist-at-large Saskatchewanderer, Neil Fisher, admits he’s been “Saskatchewandering” since he moved here in 2014. “It’s not where I’m from originally, so I’m just trying to get to know it,” says Fisher. Born and raised on the coast of British Columbia, Fisher immediately found unexpected beauty in the flat prairie and set about exploring the unfamiliar landscape every moment he could find outside of his fulltime job. He even documented his experiences on social media. It was a co-worker that pointed out the Saskatchewanderer job listing last fall and it seemed like a perfect fit.

destination saskatchewan summer 2016

Since starting as the official Saskatchewanderer, Fisher has had a wide range of interesting experiences. He’s trained with Kurt Southern – the number one ranked feather weight MMA fighter in Canada and watched Southern take on his opponent at Prestige Fight Club 2: Queen City Coronation. Fisher has also gotten a much-needed “Ag for Dummies” crash course in farming with the Robinson family near Laura, Saskatchewan. He’ll be returning to their farm several times in 2016 to continue his education in farm life in Saskatchewan – an education he values tremendously. “It’s something that I think all Canadians really need to understand and respect a little more. It’s a noble life choice. We, in Saskatchewan, are feeding the world,” notes Fisher. Continuing to get outside of his comfort zone, Fisher also visited Rouleau to see Bill Aulie work with his champion Clydesdale horses. Some of the majestic animals trained by Aulie have been featured in Budweiser commercials.

This summer, the Saskatchewanderer will visit Selwyn Lake Adventure Lodge, near the border of the North West Territories. Photo: Tourism Saskatchewan/Davin Andrie

This summer he also has planned a trip to Selwyn Lake Adventure Lodge. Selwyn Lake sits on the border of Saskatchewan and North West Territories. Fisher looks forward to exploring the far north through fishing, hiking and paddling. Wherever he goes in the province, Fisher sees the land with the fresh set of eyes of someone who wasn’t born here. Three places every Saskatchewanian should visit:

1

Amyot Lake and Sturgeon River, PA National Park

When most people think of Prince Albert National Park they think Waskesiu, but there is so much more to see and do in the Park. Fisher says everyone should venture off the beaten path to find the pristine wilderness and gorgeous lakes on the west side of the park – specifically Amyot Lake and Sturgeon River. “There’s trails, there’s bison you can feed if you’re really lucky. It’s something that needs to be appreciated a little bit more as well,” he says.

2

Great Sandhills Ecological Reserve

Sometimes called a hidden gem, Fisher points out it’s not really hidden. “If you open Google Maps, it’s a massive green blotch in the southwest.” Located in the Southwest corner of the province the Great Sandhills are one of the largest set of active sand

dunes in Canada. It is an ever-changing, almost alien landscape. “It’s like a beach without the ocean. There’s no seagulls stealing your lunch,” says Fisher. It’s a great day trip with lots for young and old to enjoy. The Great Sandhills Museum and interpretive Centre in Sceptre offers everything you need to begin your adventure.

3

Anywhere you haven’t been

It’s a pretty generic directive, but Fisher is absolutely serious. “If you live in the south, go north. If you live in the north, go south. Saskatchewan is beautiful everywhere and if you haven’t been somewhere, just go and check it out.”

From Regina to Saskatoon, Nokomis to Swift Current, the craft beer scene in Saskatchewan has been steadily growing over the past five years. Though we may have been a little late to the game as compared to the rest of the country, with multiple breweries open and more on the way, there has never been a better time to try out some locally made brew. Brewmaster Steven Cavan, founder of Paddock Wood Brewing Co. in Saskatoon, paved the way some 20 years back. The province’s first official microbrewery continues to be a go-to choice for craft beer enthusiasts. Their popular “indie” brand beer is carried in multiple pubs and restaurants in Saskatoon, Regina and beyond. Beer lovers can try out 16 on-tap varieties of Paddock Wood and rotational guest taps at Wood’s Ale House, or stock up at their brick and mortar location in the city or a local SLGA. hop finish. Thanks to a strong underground scene over the past few decades in the form of the ALE’s Club for ale and lager enthusiasts, the craft brew scene in Regina had a bit of a head start in terms of community awareness. As an early adopter and past ALE’s Club president, award-winning home brewer Mark Heise, now head brewmaster and co-owner of Rebellion Brewing Co., in Regina, has helped amplify the reach of craft brew in the community and beyond. Rebellion opened its doors in November 2014 with an aggressive plan for growth. Now, after just over two years, the brewery is producing more craft beer than anyone else in the province – at capacity, 10 fermenters with 5,000 hectoliters/year. Be sure to stop into their flagship location and before you leave, think green and take home one of their multiple sized growlers or kegs that can be brought back in for refill. Don’t leave without trying their best selling IPA brew. You can also find Rebellion beer on tap provincewide in restaurants in pubs.

Welcome Aboard

One of the most unique ways to explore Saskatoon is aboard the province’s only riverboat cruise: the Prairie Lily. The Prairie Lily offers a unique perspective of Saskatoon’s gorgeous river valley. With outdoor and indoor viewing areas, the Prairie Lily sails rain or shine. Dinner and brunch cruises are particularly popular. Ask about this season’s special Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan ticket packages and the new “Canapes & Bubbles” cruises featuring guest caterer, The Hollows.

Trails of 1885

Cannington Manor is a re-creation of a settlement that was a vision of British pioneers hoping to develop an aristocratic community, complete with fox hunts, poetry clubs, croquet, cricket and tennis. Original artifacts and reconstructed buildings, along with costumed staff, bring the former activities of Cannington Manor to life. The provincial park, located 16 km southeast of Moose Mountain Provincial Park, is open from Victoria Day weekend to Labour Day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and is closed Tuesdays.

History comes to life as you explore the Trails of 1885, encompassing the important sites and events of the Northwest Resistance, a turbulent chapter in Canadian history. Three driving tours are suggested: the Battle River Country tour, including the Battlefords, Cut Knife and Poundmaker Cree Nation; the Valleys of Saskatchewan tour, including stops at Batoche Historic Site, Duck Lake, Fort Carlton; and the North West Frontier tour, visiting Frog Lake National Historic Site, Fort Pitt, Frenchmen Butte and Steel Narrows Historic Park.

WHY STOP NOW? The Capital of Northern Saskatchewan, the Town of La Ronge is a scenic two and a half hour drive north of Waskesiu Lake. The last major center in the province connected with paved highway and nestled on the shores of Lac La Ronge, the Town of La Ronge is the hub of the north and is next to world class hiking trails, fishing, camping, and is home to great food and northern hospitality! The Town is at its finest in July and August with many summer activities and celebrations. Best of all, the sun won’t set on your fun until very late in the evening, so you may want to take in another round at the most Northerly golf course in Saskatchewan just outside of Town, get in one last cast on the lake or take that extra long stroll after supper.

We thank everyone for their outpouring of support during the 2015 wild fire season. We encourage you to come and enjoy yourself in a community of progressive growth and vision, cultural flare and intriguing history. See for yourself the beauty of the lush green forests and Canadian Shield rock surrounding us and witness the contrast of the scorched pines from the memorable 2015 fire activity in the area. We invite you to partake in the many festivities available, or just simply enjoy.
