ADVENTURE AWAITS IN BY JENN SMITH NELSON FOR POSTMEDIA SK SPECIAL PROJECTS
SASKATCHEWAN
This winter, head south. No, we aren’t talking about crossing any borders here, instead consider planning a trip to an area of the province brimming with diversity. From internationally themed cuisine and top-notch festivals and musical acts, to fun-filled snowy hotspots, the southern region of the province is filled with tons of variety to pass the fall and winter days away.
refuge in the city
A snowy escape from the city can be found in Wakamow Valley, mere minutes from downtown Moose Jaw. Embrace the season with a skate on the oval rink, a hike, snowshoeing (free rentals) or cross-country skiing on groomed trails. Winter events include wagon rides on New Year’s Eve (from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Winterfest, February 21 – a free family event featuring winter activities and games.
galleries galore
With exhibitions changing every six to eight weeks, multiple visits to the Estevan Art Gallery & Museum are encouraged. Beyond showcasing artwork by local, provincial and national artists, the gallery hosts After Dark, a live music series running until June. Plan to attend the Homemade for the Holidays event, December 5 from 1 to 4 p.m., where local artists, artisans and crafters showcase their wares.
ranch charm and history
Take advantage of four-season riding with a visit to Historic Reesor Ranch. Tuck into the onsite B&B, cabins or log barn. Cabin rooms are dedicated to local ranchers and their history, so expect to also learn a little something during your visit. Dine at the Ranch House Grill after a day of playing in the snow, then head to the games room or relax by the fireplace for a cozy evening in the Cypress Hills countryside.
get your ski on!
Take the whole family out for a snow day. Mission Ridge Winter Park, in the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley, has an all-ages, learn-to-ski program and boasts 750 skis and 250 snowboards for rent. Opening November 28, the resort makes all their own snow, so strap on your skis or snowboards and shred some fresh powder this season. After a full day on the slopes, warm up at Bubba’s, where the valley’s best pizza awaits.

Expect flavour-filled food and adventure when dining at The Grotto in Vibank. Housed in an old convent, the highly revered restaurant serves up authentic Mexican fare so popular it requires a reservation well in advance (think months!). Wednesday and Friday nights feature a threecourse fixed menu including traditional add-on, chapuline, better known as grasshopper. Saturday nights feature American BBQ items such as brisket, ribs, chicken and duck. Peer down the end of one of Western Canada’s longest bars at Buddy’s Pub in Arcola. Located inside provincial historical site, the 1906 Arcola Town Hall, visitors can enjoy a drink and the ambiance with its restored local brick and woodwork, and vaulted tin ceilings.

There’s truly something for everyone to enjoy.”

When the temperature drops, the fun heats up in Saskatoon! Explore the snowy splendour of our downtown river valley by strolling the Meewasin Valley Trail, named one of Top 10 Greatest Hikes by Readers’ Digest. Other great ways to connect to nature include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and kick-sledding (a small sled you propel by foot). Rent the gear for any of these outdoor adventures, for a low daily rate, at Escape Sports, just across from the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market. Every winter, thousands of residents and visitors flock to the riverside Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink at PotashCorp Plaza. During the skating season, a warming shelter with a wood-burning fireplace is open daily; skates are available at no cost with donations appreciated.
eat this! sip that!
Saskatoon’s culinary scene is exploding with exciting new eateries. In the past five years, over 120 new restaurants and pubs have opened their doors in our city, many offering one-of-a-kind dining experiences. Head downtown to Bon Temps Café and let their Cajun-inspired menu transport you to New Orleans’ French Quarter. Sundays from noon to 2 p.m., the good times roll at Bon Temps’ Bluegrass Brunch. The iconic Riversdale neighbourhood has become a hotbed of trendy bistros and boutiques. Be sure to try The Odd Couple, serving Asian food with a contemporary twist. Then stroll over to Little Bird Patisserie for a scrumptious macaron or éclair.

festival fun
Love beer? Love bacon? After a successful kick-off in Regina, the BeerBaconBands Festival heads to Saskatoon, November 27 and 28 at TCU Place. Indulge in incredible bacon dishes created by local chefs, paired with outstanding craft beers. Live bands and DJs will amp up the fun. The city’s biggest outdoor winter party is the PotashCorp Wintershines Festival, returning January 23 to 31. The Ice Park is a family favourite, with a sculpted ice castle slide, climbing wall, pony rides and a petting zoo. Watch world class sculptors create breathtaking ice carvings. A highlight of Wintershines is the Warm The Heart Soup Cook-off, as local chefs compete for honours and raising funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Back by popular demand is Frosted Gardens, Saskatoon’s awesome outdoor ice carving gallery, hosted by the Delta Bessborough Hotel. From January 29 to February 19, the hotel’s outdoor gardens will be transformed into a winter wonderland, including an ice amusement centre, ice slide and snow golf! Other dates to save on your travel calendar include the BHP Billiton Enchanted Forest Holiday Light Tour at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park (Nov. 20-Jan.10); the Festival of Trees at the Western Development Museum (Nov.22-28); and the 14th annual Saskatoon Blues Festival (Feb. 22-28).
