OFFERS EXTRAORDINARY CULTURAL EXPERIENCE BY HILARY KLASSEN
Gobsmacked! That’s how the CEO of the Remai Modern says people will feel when they walk into the new gallery. The museum of modern and contemporary art is like nothing ever seen in this city, or likely this province, before. “It’s phenomenal what has actually been realized,” says CEO Gregory Burke. “It doesn’t happen once in a lifetime. It happens once in many generations.” That fact has been noted far afield and generated considerable media buzz. The Arts and Life section of the Wall Street Journal recently devoted three-quarters of their cover page to the Remai Modern, with a nod to the opening of the new Louvre in Abu Dhabi, in the remaining space. Britain’s, The Art Newspaper, the American Express Essentials Magazine, various in-flight publications and others have praised the new gallery. But New York’s Surface magazine – a highly respected design, culture and travel journal - perhaps captured it best with their story: “Canada’s Coolest New Art Museum Isn’t in Toronto”. Newsflash. It’s in Saskatoon. And it’s putting Saskatoon on the map as never before. Burke finds the buzz extraordinary and unprecedented, but also a testament to the standing the gallery will have in the international art community and in Canada. “It won’t be the largest art gallery in the country but it will be the most beautiful,” Burke says. After the closing of the Mendel Art Gallery in 4 | DESTINATION SASKATCHEWAN WINTER 2017
2015 and two years with no public gallery, the opening of the Remai Modern on October 21, was long-awaited and much-anticipated. Field Guide, the inaugural exhibition, showcases samplings of the 8,000 pieces inherited from the Mendel collection (including Lauren Harris), the Picasso collection (Ryan Gander selections: the most comprehensive in the world), as well as international selections from artists from South America, Asia, Europe and across Canada. “It also represents our desire to reflect the diversity of the population here in Saskatoon. A large component of the show features First Nations and Métis Artists,” says Burke. Featured works include those of American art-
It won’t be the “largest gallery in the
country, but it will be the most beautiful!
”
- Gregory Burke
CEO of Remai Modern ists like John Baldessari, Christopher Williams, Lawrence Weiner and Pae White, prominent international artists including Walid Raad, Rosemarie Trockel, Haegue Yang and Philippe Parreno, as well as renowned Canadian artists such as Stan Douglas and Ian Wallace and such noted Sas-
katchewan artists as Bob Boyer, Eli Bornstein and Kara Uzelman. While artwork can invite silent contemplation, public engagement and interaction is at the core of Remai Modern’s values. It’s reflected in a range of programming designed to engage audiences. A learning studio invites people to make their own art. A state-of-the-art theatre will screen films for “Cinema in the Museum” and a Discovery Cinema program for families and kids. Reading groups have started and musical performances
will be an attractive option. A design store offers modern and high-quality product at a range of price points. A new restaurant called ‘Shift’ by Oliver and Bonacini out of Toronto, capitalizes on the riverfront location of the gallery, with floor to ceiling windows and wide-open views. Burke says the protection and accessibility of the river banks in Saskatoon is “totally visionary.” An exhibit on the ground floor called “Determined by the River” speaks to the importance of the South Saskatchewan River. The building itself is a startling example of distinctive architecture, one of the visual arts. The Remai Modern occupies a mind-blowing 130,000 square feet, five times the space of the Mendel, and offers 11 galleries. When lead architect Bruce Kuwabara of the design firm KPMB spoke about the design in Saskatoon two years ago, he discussed intimate monumentality – the apparent contradictions between making something that is really human and intimate and something that is monumental, a building that can accommodate individual moments and very large gatherings. Burke considers the Remai Modern Kuwabara’s best work to date. Gatherings will be another major component of the museum. “It is so engaging, it’s so transparent toward the outside, it’s so inviting and there’s an extraordinary amount of community space, not just the galleries where the exhibitions will be, but there’s just as much space again for people to have community events, weddings, galas and conferences,” Burke says.
Strategically located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, the Remai Modern offers exciting new programming that facilitates public engagement and participation.
“Access to the museum’s ground floor is always free, including the Connect Gallery and the light-filled atrium which hosts art installations, readings, and performances.” Burke says with the hotel and office tower going up across the street, and the new Remai Modern, the centre of gravity of downtown Saskatoon will shift to that area. The booking schedule for 2018 is already filling up with different activities and conferences. “There will be an uptick in visitation from tourists and we’ll do
our bit to support the food culture here in Saskatoon and the vitality of Saskatoon itself.” The river motif on the ground floor speaks metaphorically through a vessel that is navigating a course for the future. It now falls to Burke and Chief Curator Sandra Guimaraes to navigate the future of the Remai Modern Art Gallery. Burke invites people to enjoy the new exhibits and acquisitions the gallery rolls out over the next couple of years. “We’ve got some big things planned!”
