Backyard sheds hot spot for rest and relaxation Melissa Kossler Dutton The Associated Press When Morgaine Ford-Workman and Wren Workman bought a house with a backyard shed, they saw the potential for something more than storing garden tools. The couple transformed the 10-by-12-foot building into a bar to use during outdoor parties at their house in Morrisville, Pennsylvania. “We’re involved in community theatre and we like to throw a lot of parties,” Ford-Workman said. “It’s an extra place to hang out.” People looking to get more use out of their backyards are building or converting sheds for a variety of purposes. There are backyard pubs. “She sheds,” when they’re built by women. Home offices. Art or yoga studios. TV rooms. “As we continue to ex-
plore other ways we can utilize our backyard space, we will continue to see trends like this,” said Stacy Nelson, who owns a backyard-design consulting firm, Backyard Mamma, in Weston, West Virginia. “We want to be in nature and unwind.” The do-it-yourself element and the sheds’ visual impact have made them popular on social media sites, Nelson said. “It’s gaining in popularity. It’s all over the board what people are using them for,” she said. The sheds range from stylized structures with sliding glass doors to buildings made from repurposed materials. Ford-Workman and her husband spent about $300 fixing up their structure, which friends have dubbed “Barshed.”

Morgaine Ford-Workman/The Associated Press
The Workman’s shed in the backyard of their house has been repurposed as a social hot spot. A growing number of homeowners have begun throwing parties in converted sheds and outbuildings constructed for entertaining.

Sense and sentimentality Samantha Pynn National Post
Q I’m 24, and I inherited a large,
older condo from my grandmother. I’m using her dining table and chairs as a place to sit while I make the place my own. The table and chairs are apparently fruitwood. The wood stain always looked extremely dirty to me — even more now that I’ve painted the walls grey. My parents absolutely do not want me to paint her furniture, which means I’m looking for a new dining table and chairs. I don’t want a cheap, fake-wood table, but that’s what I can afford. Is there a way you can help me convince my parents that it is OK to paint my grandmother’s wood set. I have zero dollars, but expensive taste! A Big taste and no money is the reason I got into the decorating biz. In fact, your question is the same kind of question I would have asked 20 years ago. Though I didn’t inherit my grandmother’s apartment, I rented a two-bedroom apartment for $1,000 a month. My parents never wanted me to paint wood. In fact, in my first home, my entire family needed defibrillation when I told them I had painted the large wood fireplace mantel. The first few times I painted wood I doubted myself, but half of my furniture was from Goodwill so none of it had any sentimental value. The first piece of furniture I ever painted was my childhood rocking chair my grandmother had given me. I told my mother over the phone that I was going to paint it, but she warned me not to “ruin” the chair. I painted it anyway. What I’m going to tell you next is going to get me into trouble with your parents — wood-painting protesters please feel free to continue using my photo as a dartboard — but, paint that table and chair set. It’s your set, not your parents.’ In the inspiration photo here is an inexpensive dining table and chair set that we bought at Elegant Garage Sale, a consignment shop,
for a dining room on my new show Open House Overhaul on HGTV. We painted the dining chairs the same colour as the wall and reupholstered the seats with inexpensive new fabric. I have a hunch that if you painted your chairs the same grey as your walls, you would fall in love with your grandmother’s set. The more you repeat a colour, the more soothing a room’s palette becomes. If you wanted to further update the set to make it feel less matched, you could add “mama” and “papa” chairs at either end of your table. After painting the chairs, if the wood stain on your table still looks “dirty,” paint it a neutral black, white or dark grey. For an airy fresh look, go with white. Black or dark grey will give your table a heavier look that will work well in a classic space. Good luck in your new place. Happy chair and (maybe) table painting! Send your small-space question to asksampynn@gmail.com.

Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski/Studio Shed
This homeowner used a shed to enhance the backyard and create additional space for entertaining and outdoor living. Homeowners around the country are using sheds as a place to hang out.
Sheds Backyard getaways social and creative outlets
Continued from F1 They furnished it with cast-of f fur niture from friends. “Our Barshed is nothing to put in a home-design magazine by any stretch of the imagination, but all our friends rave about its existence,” she said. Studio Shed in Louisville, Colorado, sells prefabricated structures to people who want more living space or to enhance their backyard, said Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, the company’s creative director. The buildings, which range in price from $7,500 to $20,000, offer flexibility and are less expensive than adding a room to the house, he said.
“Our Barshed is nothing to put in a home-design magazine by any stretch of the imagination, but all our friends r ave about its e xistence.” Morgaine Ford-Workman Jennifer and Eric Antonow added a shed to their Palo Alto, California, property because they can’t afford a bigger house. “It made so much economic sense,” she said. They use their shed as a home office and recording studio. It sits next to their hot tub, so sometimes they use it as a changing room. She also anticipates serving
drinks there while entertaining outside. The Antonows needed a permit to install the shed, which rests on a concrete slab. City and county rules vary, so check with the local zoning department before adding a structure, said Jim Ayers, a contributor to hometalk.com, an online home and garden forum for do-ityourselfers.
He did not need a permit to build the gardening shed that he later converted into a tiki bar at his Nashville, Tennessee, home. The building, which sits on concrete blocks, is not a permanent structure, he said. He transformed the shed into a party spot at the urging of his wife, Monika. “It didn’t take much for me to go her way,” he said. He estimates he spent about $500 on the project. He already had some of the lumber. Many of the items are repurposed. The Ayers spend a lot of time in their backyard, and love to invite friends. “If we’re not at somebody else’s place or away on a trip, we’re out there,” he said. “My wife loves it. In her younger years, she was a bartender.”
Morgaine Ford-Workman/ The Associated Press
The shed that Jennifer and Eric Antonow built near their backyard hot tub provides some extra living space. The shed was a more affordable option than building an addition.

Using better products that are durable on your next renovation will save the environment and money. Not only did it last, but the homeowners never changed it. We need to think about why we renovate. What choices are we making for our homes, and why. Are you renovating to make your home more energy-efficient, watertight or healthy? Are you increasing its durability and longevity? Or are you just tired of the paint colour, or maybe the neighbours redid their kitchen and now you’re thinking yours needs an update too? I’m not saying don’t renovate, but what I am saying is do it smart. Work from the outside in. Make sure you have a good roof and a strong building envelope that protects your home and saves you energy before you start updating the kitchen and bathrooms. Always hire someone who knows what they’re doing. Yes, it will cost more, but cheaper is always more expensive because you will have to do it again. And choose materials that you won’t need to replace five years down the road. That’s why I’m a big fan of materials that last, things like quartz, composite wood, metal roofs, quality insulation, etc. And why we make sure everything is installed properly, like using Ditra underlayment below our tiles. Because you can have the best materials, but if they are not installed properly they are going in the garbage, and so is your money. Protecting the environment benefits all of us — every single person on this beautiful planet. The bottom line is that we need natural resources to survive, and that’s a fact. So let’s be smart, use them responsibly and protect them. We all have a role to play here, let’s make it right. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. June 5th was World Environment Day, and as a contractor and builder, I have a responsibility to be green. Why? Because in my line of work I see a lot of materials, a lot of products, and unfortunately, a lot of waste. I can’t tell you how many tons of concrete, plywood, shingles, lumber — you name it — I’ve ordered, used and demoed. It’s enough to make your head spin. And it’s part of the reason why I have absolutely no tolerance for bad jobs. Not only is it potentially dangerous (for example, a bad reno can lead to bad electrical or unsafe structure) but it’s also a massive waste of materials — new materials. That’s why we do things once, and we do them right — so we don’t have to do them again and use twice the materials. And whenever my crew works on any demo job, we save what we can — tiles, brick, lumber, fixtures, etc. — anything we can use again, and we recycle whatever materials we can. For example, you can recycle asphalt shingles. There are plenty of choices you can make as a homeowner, too. For example, you can collect the rainwater that comes off your roof and use it to water your lawn or wash your car; install low-flow water fixtures, use green-friendly paint, power-off when you’re not using appliances, and use alternatives to cooling, like awnings on your windows. You also can switch to LEDs and start incorporating solar lighting around your home. (Going completely solar is obviously a top choice, but it might still be too big of a leap for some homeowners.) I read an article that did a really good job of spelling it out. It said that 50 years ago, we knew we had a consumption problem. But now we have double the population and our consumption has skyrocketed. Just one generation ago, if you bought a car, that was the car you had for the rest of your life. Today we change our cars like we change our tools — almost every five years. A n d wh a t a b o u t o u r homes? Remember when homes used to last? Families would keep them for generations. Same with the furniture and the finishes. I’ve seen homes where the tile on the floor is the same tile that was there 70 years ago.

Outdoor party tips from pros
Life imitates art in new trend
Jura Koncius The Washington Post
The Japan News/ Yomiuri
The outdoor entertaining season is here. Celebrations under the stars are more casual. Whether your outdoor living room is a sliver of an urban balcony or a vast back deck filled with cushy seating, we have tricks to help your keep guests, food and flowers from wilting.
Party planning Planning is still the No. 1 ingredient, whether your party is al fresco or in the dining room. Amber Karson and Emily Butler, twins who run Karson Butler Events, spend their days, and nights, throwing weddings, holiday parties and other festivities. Karson and Butler say a garden party theme could include a “snip and sip” herb garnish station for guests to clip plants and add to their ice tea or cocktails. There could also be a build-yourown-salad station with veggies and meat kebabs. They also suggested a DIY activity of potting flower or herb centrepieces to take home, instead of party favours. Another idea is an outdoor movie theme. Put out picnic baskets with cheese and charcuterie, pasta salad, gourmet popcorn and sweets. Scatter blankets in the yard and project a movie on a wall or white backdrop.

Here are some best party practices from Karson and Butler:
Emily Butler, left, and Amber Karson, twins who run Karson Butler Events, have great insight into how to make a party special.
Buy ice. And then buy more
ice. At least one pound of ice per person per hour. You don’t want to run out, especially on a horribly humid summer evening. Assign seats. Just because you’re outdoors doesn’t mean you can’t plan where everyone is going to sit. As a host or hostess, you can strategize seating assignments to facilitate fabulous connections and conversations. Create fun place cards.

a small table with fun things to help ward off the sizzling heat. You could have chilled towels, paper parasols and sunscreen — plus plenty of cold water.
■■ Be careful what you tote outside. Think twice about using your good china or silver outdoors. Melamine and acrylic tableware are preferable, as they won’t break if guests or gusts tip them over. ■■ Experiment with lighting. Hanging globes are popular, as are metal lanterns for low lighting. Try using flameless pillars and tea lights inside lanterns; some can be put on timers. As the evening wears on, the glow of candlelight, real or faux, will keep your dinner party magical. ■■ Don’t let bugs crash your party. Crate and Barrel Fly Away Sticks are incense sticks that ward off insects with eco-friendly orange and citronella oils. They also make a thoughtful hostess gift.

you want to add an of-themoment accessory to your outdoor entertaining arsenal, try something made of galvanized sheet metal or some flameless pillar candles with timers. ■
This year, Crate and Barrel was inspired by waterside gatherings, according to Katie Fischer, the store’s merchandise manager for entertaining. “Galvanized metal has a lot of warmth and familiarity,” Fischer says. “We like the way it goes with lots of colours and contrasting textures.” Fischer shared her own recipe for entertaining outdoors. ■■ Load up a large beverage tub with ice and lots of different refreshments. It’s important to keep beverages plentiful and handy and cold. If guests can serve themselves drinks, you can have more fun at your own party. ■■ Fill a beverage dispenser. Water infused with fruit or herbs (cucumber-mint-strawberry is Fischer’s current favourite) is a refreshing treat. An acrylic beverage dispenser is good for the outdoors; put a stack of unbreakable tumblers nearby.
If you always thought having flowers at your outdoor table was gilding the lily, it’s time to reconsider. Someone who could help change your mind is Jennifer “Jo” Oliver from Highway to Hill Flowers in Washington. Last year, Oliver moved her flower studio from her home to the Off

the Beaten Track warehouse. She does custom arrangements for weddings, parties and individual clients, and she also offers classes. Oliver has lots of experience in designing flowers that have to look their best for hours in Washington’s withering heat and humidity. Here are some of her do’s and don’ts for arranging and displaying blooms outside. ■■ Choose hardy varieties. As long as you hydrate flowers, most will do well. Roses, daisies, Alstroemeria lilies and carnations are among the hardiest, Oliver says. A bit more delicate are hydrangeas, lilac and peonies; they might wilt a bit faster in direct midday sun. ■■ Prepare flowers carefully. When you get them home, cut at least one inch and preferably a few inches off the stems, and put the flowers in cool water in a large container until you are ready to arrange them. ■■ Test your arrangement for size. Put it on the table after you set out your place settings to make sure it isn’t dominating the landscape. Here is a florist’s standard
rule for testing the proper height of a centrepiece to make sure it doesn’t block guests on the other side of the table: Put your elbow on the table and make a fist. Your arrangement should not be taller than the distance from your elbow to your fist. ■■ Hold off putting them outdoors. Keep your arrangement inside until 15 minutes before guests are due, so the flowers will be at their most fresh. Store in an out-of-the-way place, such as a basement if you have one. If you don’t, put in an airconditioned room, but not directly in front of the unit or vent. It never hurts to give an arrangement a quick spray from a misting bottle before placing it outside. ■■ After your party give away the flowers as gifts as guests depart. Or bring them inside, where you should get a few more days of enjoyment out of them if you change the water daily.
TOKYO — A 39-year-old man adorns his condominium in Tokyo with plants — on the living room wall, not on the floor. The plants, which he bought last year, were enclosed in what looked like a picture frame. Growing plants this way is becoming popular because it allows the plants to be hung like a stylishly framed picture, and they do not take up any precious floor space. The man uses a product called My Gallery that was designed for interior decoration by Toho-Leo Co., a large greenery company in Osaka. “I like botanical plants, so I wanted to have something unusual that can also make for great interior decoration,” he said. The product is designed to enclose a planter that can hold water in an oak frame, which was handcrafted by professionals and is 90 centimetres long, 50 centimetres high and nine centimetres deep. The man has five plants, that come in a set for about $480. Such frames are hung on the wall with metal fittings, which need to be fixed on the wall in advance. The plants require watering a few times a week and trimming if their leaves
grow too thick. “I look forward to seeing the plants change slightly every day,” the man said. His wife, 34, added: “If we place a large potted plant on the floor, our child may knock it over, and hanging it on the wall means we don’t have to worry about that. It’s convenient and looks great.” “These products are loved by consumers as they have a slight surprise element to them in that it looks like a plant is growing out of your wall,” said Yusuke Takai, an employee of Universal Engeisha Co., a greenery service company in Osaka Prefecture. “Unlike potted plants placed on the floor, plants hung on the wall provide a complete view of the plant, which is more relaxing and comfortable.” However, unlike paintings, they need to be tended to. If placed along dim entrances or corridors, they may wither or die. To ensure they live longer, they need to be placed in a sunny spot. Furthermore, the fact that the leaves of the plants often move toward the source of sunshine may affect the esthetic balance of the plants. “If you are concer ned about their appearance, trim them occasionally so they look good when you look at the frames head-on,” Takai said.

Slumber essentials for the uber rich Lara Ceroni National Post Canadians are in desperate need of their 40 winks and, a surprise to no one, we don’t get enough. One-third of our lives should be spent in sweet slumber and yet on average adults are only getting six hours a night. Sadder still, our children don’t fare much better: apparently only 40 per cent are getting the required amount. All this to say that we are tired, people. A report released by the World Association of Sleep Medicine (to mark the organization’s World Sleep Day) says 60 per cent of Canadians feel fatigued “most of the time.” Statistics Canada concurs and says when we are deprived, our life suffers immeasurably. Lack of sleep is associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and depression. So it all begs the question: is there anything that will help us get better sleep? The Big Box mattress market is robust and competitive. Today’s consumer has lots of choice and a plethora of price points to suit budget and taste. But really, if the professionals are telling us that sleep is inherent to our overall health and well-being, shouldn’t we only rest on the best? From a $100,000 horsehair bed to elaborately handstitched and handmade organic mattresses, here are a few of the most luxurious offerings.
strand works like a miniventilation system to eliminate moisture and allow fresh air to circulate. All of this will cost you, though. The Vividus model is as aristocratic as it sounds, starting at $93,000. “Our beds are designed to give you the enchanted feeling of sleeping on a cloud,” says Shane Bahng, director of global retail development.
Hastens Handmade by master craftspeople at the brand’s facility in Sweden, each bed is bespoke to the sleeping habits of the buyer, made using premium natural materials that all serve to offer the most restful respite. Because of its durability, flax is used. Pine is sourced from the forests of northern Sweden to create a strong and stable frame and a combination of pure wool and cotton ensures your bed will always be at the ideal temperature, acting as its own personal climate-control unit while wicking away perspiration. The most essential component is the horsehair harvested from Argentine stallions. Spun into a sort of yarn and layered by hand, each
Essentia Although a new kid on the block, having just opened retail space in Toronto in 2009, this smaller Montreal manufacturer is the first in the world to create its own patented natural memory foam. Considered a ubiquitous material in the market, Essentia’s formulation made with hevea milk — the sap of rubber trees sourced
from Indonesia — promises to relieve your most painful pressure points and cradle your curves. They’re quick to admit that’s the basis for any memory foam, but here’s how they differ: By mixing such natural elements as grapefruit seed and jasmine essence, along with corn extract and organic cotton, there is more air flow through the mattress so body heat isn’t trapped in, but “sleeps cool.” They contend it means their beds are seven degrees cooler than competitors’ offerings. Their ProCor series of perfor mance-based mattresses suited for the professional or amateur athletes is about $3,300 for a queen.
Vi-Spring In a world of mass production, Vi-Spring touts it-
self as a brand that provides an unparalleled level of luxury. Handmade in England, using a combination of natural and organic vicuna wool from Peru, Turkish long-fibre cotton and South African mohair, each bed is layered into a trademarked pocket coil of vanadium steel, the strongest steel available. This coil is hand-wrapped and hand-sewn into a honeycomb pattern, while hand stitching and tailored finishes across the mattress adds to its esthetic appeal. Natural materials in the linings of the mattresses contribute to the comfort of a consumer’s sleep, as does the wool, which acts as a natural, breathable insulator keeping you toasty in winter and cool in summer. Vi-Spring Elite starts at $3,559; the Masterpiece Superb is $45,000.
