A palette to match your personality Painting ‘shouldn’t be scary’ KAREN TURNER OTTAWA CITIZEN Sarah Baeumler makes no bones about it: she’s not a professional designer. But having tackled three major renovations — two Torontoarea homes and a cottage on Georgian Bay — with husband, HGTV star Bryan Baeumler, the mother of four knows her way around a paint can. “(Paint colour) should speak to your personality,” says the petite blond who is flogging a new paint line, HGTV HOME by SherwinWilliams. The Baeumlers are the official ambassadors for the new collection. She admits that standing in front of a wall of tiny paint chips trying to choose the right colour for your walls, woodwork and fur-

Sarah Baeumler’s laundry room is dressed to the nines with black cabinetry, marble floors and art on the wall.

Colours Biggest task is

trying schemes together CONTINUED FROM F1 “Painting is an easy weekend project. It shouldn’t be scary or overwhelming,” says Baeumler, who credits the 16 colour collections in the new paint line for taking the guesswork out of narrowing down the myriad options. Each palette includes 20 colours that all work well together to help homeowners “design with confidence.” After more than two years, the Baeumlers recently completed their “forever home” on a 20-acre rural property close to the picturesque Niagara Escarpment. Season 4 of House of Bryan: The Final Straw on HGTV will follow the couple and the crew as they put the finishing touches on the mammoth six-bedroom estate, which is teeming with expensive marble, glittery chandeliers and opulent furnishings. The first of eight episodes aired Oct. 11. Her biggest challenge was picking a colour scheme that would tie the rooms together. “I wanted it to flow room by room. I didn’t want

them to be disjointed boxes.” Convincing her husband, a fellow Type-A personality, to trust her sometimes offbeat choices, including soft pink in the upstairs sitting room and dark grey in the boys’ “manly” bathroom, was of often a struggle, too. Can’t really blame the guy. Not many of us would install black cabinetry, marble floors and a chandelier in a room where we wash our dirty clothes. “Sometimes, people don’t pay attention to the rooms where they spend the most time,” says Baeumler, who opted for a chic New York boutique style for her windowless laundry room. “I made it very glamorous. I put love and personality into the space.” Reflecting her children’s personalities was also key when decorating their bedrooms. “We tried very hard to make sure each room was distinctive of our kids’ personalities,” she says at the end of Season 3’s House of Bryan: In the Sticks.

In oldest son Quintyn’s room, three walls were painted deep navy — the 10-year-old’s choice — with a feature wall of reclaimed barn board behind his bed. Faux antlers and a mounted ceramic animal head add to the outdoorsy feel. “Quintyn is a little adventure man,” says his proud dad during a tour of the finished room. “He’s an outdoor guy and very in touch with nature. He wanted his room to reflect his personality. This is so him.” In eight-year-old Charlotte’s room, a stencilled metallic gold design runs up one wall and the allwhite furniture is fitted with gold handles. Her mom describes the look as “a new take on a princess room.” HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams is available in two exterior and interior paint lines — Ovation and Showcase — exclusively at Lowe’s stores across Canada. Prices range from $33 to $57. For more information, go to painton.com.

The navy blue mud room in Sarah and Bryan Baeumler’s new home.

T H E G O O D , T H E B A D A N D T H E U G LY Sarah Baeumler has lived through three extensive renovations, including the two-year custom build of her Toronto-area home that involved blending an original A-frame house with a modern addition. Oh and did I mention, she and her husband Bryan stayed in the house with their four young children for the duration? Here are her top survival tips: ■ Move out. If you can afford to live elsewhere during the renovation, do it. Living in the mess, noise and chaos of a construction site can be very stressful and challenging. ■ Hire a contractor and/or designer who understands your vision. “Personality wise, it has to work for you,” says Sarah, who

recommends checking references before hiring anyone. “It has to be a good match.” ■ Family comes first. Though it’s nearly impossible to have normalcy during renovation, “you have to make it work for your family.” Sarah says organization is key and keeping your children’s needs uppermost in your mind is your top priority. “The reality is they’re part of this process.” ■ Enjoy the journey. Every couple argues over tile choices or wall colour, but don’t let “the good, the bad and the ugly” decisions ruin your relationship, Sarah warns. If you start asking yourselves: “Are we doing the right thing? That’s when you have to take a break.” — Karen Turner, Ottawa Citizen

REBECCA KEILLOR FOR THE VANCOUVER VER SUN V A room in chaos can quickly make anyone in it feel likewise and of all the rooms in a house, the one you probably want this in least is a child’s nursery (particularly in the middle of the night). Simple, clean design, along with calming colour choices, can be as soothing for parents as it is for tots and provides a great backdrop for a couple of bright, fun toys and accessories. Here are five nursery decorations to drool over:

MAKE IT RIGHT

Protect your family from carbon monoxide especially if the garage area hasn’t been properly sealed from the rest of the living area. (Rule of thumb: never leave your cars running or use gas-powered tools inside the garage even if the garage doors are open.)

MIKE HOLMES

ventilation. In some cases, they weren’t installed right to begin with. Other times it’s because crucial venting was blocked.

4. Make sure all venting is clear from debris and snow.

That includes chimneys, flues, furnace, stove and dryer venting. Blocked venting can lead to loads of problems, including ice damming and mould, but CO poisoning is top of the list when it comes to real threats to your family. Symptoms of CO poisoning include nausea, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, and even confusion. If your CO alarm goes off and anyone in your home is feeling the above symptoms, get everyone out of the house immediately and call 911. If the alarm goes off but no one is feeling any symptoms, open all the windows and check the alarm. It could be that the batteries need replacing or the device is malfunctioning. If that’s the case get it checked by a qualified technician.

2. Maintain your CO alarms, and

Make it Right

After 30-plus years in the contracting business not many things scare me; but there still are a few. The big ones for me are the silent killers — the stuff you can’t always see but can do a lot of harm, like radon, asbestos, mould and carbon monoxide. Nov. 1 to 7 is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week — a good time to review how to keep your family safe and protect them from this dangerous gas. We’ve all heard the stories — a power outage during winter; a family desperate for heat so they decide to bring a barbecue or fuel-burning heater inside, or they run a generator inside the garage, which is attached to the home. The next thing you know we have a major tragedy on our hands. Let’s do everything we can now to prevent this from happening this year.

1. Make sure you have working

carbon monoxide (or CO) alarms in your home.

There should be one next to all sleeping areas, but I also recommend having one on every level of your home. If you have an attached garage a CO alarm is a must-have. Dangerous fumes from your cars or fuel-powered tools can make their way inside your home,

smoke alarms, too!

We turn our clocks back an hour on Sunday. This is a great time to also change the batteries in both your CO and smoke alarms. You should be changing them twice a year. Doing it when we change our clocks is an easy way to remember, and keeps you on a schedule. You should also be testing your alarms monthly, and keeping them clean by vacuuming them once a month, too. Like all things, CO and smoke alarms wear out and should be replaced about every 10 years or so, but always check the user guide or manual for proper care and maintenance.

3. Get fuel-burning appliances checked every year by a pro.

Before we move into the winter season get your HVAC systems checked by an HVAC specialist/ technician. Any appliance in your home that burns fuel — whether it’s your furnace, hot water heater, gas stove or fireplace — must be checked annually by a qualified pro. If you have a wood-bur ning fireplace, open windows when you have a fire going, and make sure there’s a constant supply of fresh air coming into your home. And you must get your chimney cleaned every year — no exception.

“ANOTHER ONE OF A KIND ADULT CONDO PROJECT”

5. Whatever you do, do not use a barbecue, fuel-burning heater or generator indoors!

ALEX SCHULDTZ/The T Holmes Group The

Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms save lives. Replace batteries twice a year and test monthly. I’d book that now, before fireplace season really gets underway. CO can get into your home a number of different ways. Some-

times it’s because of the appliances we use — they start to wear down and don’t burn fuel the way they should, or there isn’t enough

And don’t use your stove or oven for heating. If you don’t have heat, call a friend or family member and ask to stay with them while the system is serviced — it’s not worth your life or your family’s. Let’s make it a safe season, and make it right! Watch Mike in his new series, Holmes Makes It Right, on HGTV. For more information, visit makeitright.ca.

downsizing

A smaller footprint’s glass slipper Jura Koncius The Washington Post Nicholas Herman and his wife, Shannon Claire Smith, had dreamt for years of moving from Charlotte, N.C., to Washington. In April 2014, Herman, 30, flew to Washington for a job interview. When Smith, 29, arrived to pick him up from the airport, he handed her his phone: He had an email offering him the position in the George Mason University development office, starting in two weeks. First, she burst into tears. But as she dried her eyes, she was already figuring out a plan to downsize. “I began working like a madwoman,” says Smith, who now works at American University as a web content and marketing co-ordinator while also running a design business and writing a design blog, Burlap & Lace. “We knew that in D.C., all we could afford was a onebedroom, so we had to sell and donate most of our possessions. We weren’t even sure we could keep our kingsized bed.” The only non-negotiables were their pets: Pomeranian Max and two cats, Fritters and Miss Kitty, would have to be welcome in their new digs. Goodbye, 2,300-square-foot traditional suburban house with three bedrooms, a nice yard and a two-car garage. Hello, 850-square-foot onebedroom in a 1928 building in the hip Adams Morgan section of Washington. Herman and Smith, who met as students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, were married in 2009 and bought a house in a foreclosure sale around the same time. They upgraded the house with DIY projects, laying laminate flooring, changing kitchen countertops and installing crown moulding. But they always talked about relocating to Washington, where Smith’s best friend lived. “We like the energy of the city,” Herman says. So with his offer in hand, they focused on how much they could get rid of in four weeks. The plan was for Herman to start work and come back on weekends to help. First, they went apartment hunting. They found a pet-friendly one-bedroom rental for $1,850 U.S. — about three times their monthly mortgage payment in Charlotte. “We wanted a building with history and character and quirky detailing,” Smith says. “Our home in North Carolina was a cookie-cutter house and was builder’s-grade-everything.” The apartment had original hardwood floors, a cute dining alcove, high ceilings and a glassed-in former porch

The tiny home office is shared by both Herman and Smith. It once was a screened-in porch. that let in lots of natural light. The kitchen was tiny but had two built-in china cabinets with glass doors. T hey rounded up the pets and drove seven hours north, following their small moving truck. Inside were two white dressers, a desk, a small table, a sofa, a KitchenAid mixer, a knife block, dishes and the king-sized mattress set, and what was left of their clothes and books. Then it was time to settle in. “We had to think about design in a totally different way,” Smith says. “In North Carolina, we had extra space, and I filled it with stuff.” They thought of ways to make each room serve several functions. “I wanted to

embrace the size and wanted it to be as bright and bold as possible,” Smith says. “I wanted to break the rules and be colourful and have fun with things like painting the ceiling in the hallway pink.” (That would be Pink Popsicle by Benjamin Moore.) They struggled with the long, narrow living room layout. To make sense of it, they created three spaces: an entry area with a console table and place for mail and keys, a library wall of open bookshelves (to keep it from feeling closed in) and a lounging area with a sofa and TV. The dining alcove got a stylish new Scout & Nimble hanging lamp that glows copper inside when lighted.

Smith painted a blackboard wall in the kitchen and installed a tiny herb garden of mint, oregano and thyme in wall-mounted pots. There have been new DIY projects: building a radiator cover in the bathroom, painting white cotton Ikea curtains ($14 a pair) to make them look custom and creating a headboard that required the two of them to wrestle $10-a-yard banana leaf fabric over layers of plywood, upholstery foam and batting. Thrift-shop bedroom lamps were updated with black drum shades from Target. Their small space doesn’t deter them from entertaining. They had 30 for a makeyo u r- ow n - g i n - a n d - t o n i c

Last year they hosted Friendsgiving in their living room, sticking their sofa in the dining room and renting two tables to seat 20. Herman roasted two turkeys in the seven-foot-long galley

kitchen. They are hosting the second annual Friendsgiving this year. Yes, they do miss grilling and having parties spill outside to the backyard. But they have no regrets. “It’s like a giant weight of knick-knacks has been lifted off our shoulders,” Smith says. “We honestly don’t miss our old stuff.”

Creating illusions of grandeur in a small apartment a two-car garage to a onebedroom apartment? Smith and Herman got rid of most of their furniture plus 90 per cent of their books and half their clothes in about a month. Here are some of their tips for anyone about to make a move.

Jura Koncius The Washington Post Moving from a 2,300-squarefoot house to a one-bedroom rental required Shannon Claire Smith and Nicholas Herman to rethink everything. Here are some tricks they used to think outside the “rental box” and make the most of their smaller living space.

1. Create zones

Breaking up a long space into smaller, separate areas makes your home seem bigger. Use furniture or rugs to define “rooms.” Carve out a designated entry area for keys and mail, a comfortable spot for seating and a functional work space.

2. Bring the focus up

Hang artwork and curtains tall and wide. Put curtain rods just below the ceiling. Install floor-to-ceiling shelves to maximize stor-

3. Paint, if you’re allowed

Painting an accent wall or hallway creates depth and dimension. Don’t be afraid of bold or dark colours; they give the illusion of depth.

4. Light it up

Avoid using overhead fluorescent lighting at all costs. Place lamps and mirrors strategically throughout

5. Update your bathroom

Replace dated faucets and install a rain shower head; stash the originals to swap back when you move

out. Consider building a screened radiator cover to hide the bulky unit as well as provide another surface. Smith and Herman painted a black stripe around the room to mimic tile.

What to leave in the ’burbs So how do you downsize from a suburban home with

Re-evaluate your past choices. Ask yourself whether you would buy that piece again, given the chance. If the answer is no, consider listing it on sites such as Craigslist, and use the money toward something you absolutely love.

2. Have weekly yard sales

Price a new batch of things each week for a weekend sale. Keep prices low to get them moving. Think of buyers as people who are doing you a favour by hauling your things away for you. At the end of the day, take the leftovers to the curb and put out a curb

alert on Craigslist.

3. Don’t expect to make money selling stuff

Time is of the essence. The idea is to get the stuff out of your house.

4. Think of this as an opportunity to start fresh

You may have had used or hand-me-down furniture sticking around as placeholders. By moving, you’ll be able to make new choices and hopefully upgrade to things you like better.

5. Ask for free storage

If there are things you just can’t part with (prom dresses, heirloom chests) but have no room for in your new place ask friends or relatives with large basements and attics whether you might store them there. Under no circumstances should you rent a storage unit. You’ll never get rid of it.

The living room includes family antiques and abstract artwork by Kempner’s late mother, Helen Ciesla Covensky. Tilework accents the exterior of Aviva Kempner’s house.

Artist’s home tells many stories Annie Groer The Washington Post WASHINGTON — While many baby boomers downsize as they grow older, documentary filmmaker Aviva Kempner counterintuitively went bigger. Way bigger. She gained 800 square feet of living and party space, not including the basement and attic she finished later, by moving from a duplex to a Colonial large enough to contain her multiple collections, her filmmaking enterprise and her wide circle of friends, family and colleagues. The Northwest Washington house and its nearly quarter-acre lot, bought with an inheritance from an uncle who survived Auschwitz, met all of her exacting requirements. “First, I wanted to age in place and never move again. They’ll have to carry me out of here in a box,” says Kempner, 68, citing the new elevator that links her lower-level office to the first and second floors, and the outdoor ramps, front and rear, to be used when she can no longer navigate stairs.

Kempner also wanted expansive entertaining spaces. A frequent host of gatherings large and small, she can now welcome 100 guests inside or outside, at events as disparate as book parties, bar mitzvah receptions, political meet-and-greets, potluck buffets, seated dinners, movie screenings and even a memorial service. There had to be enough wall space for the oversized abstracts by her late mother, artist Helen Ciesla Covensky, along with Kempner’s own impressive collection of photos, etchings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, paintings, tiles and textiles by numerous artists, nameless to famous. Her filmmaking enterprise, the Ciesla Foundation, had to fit into the basement that she finished to include a surprisingly bright three-room suite where young staffers research, edit and schedule showings of her films. All five of Kempner’s documentaries, including a wellreceived biopic about baseball great Hank Greenberg, have some connection to Judaism. Her recent release, Rosenwald, which scored a

Aviva Kempner’s Colonial house in Washington, D.C., and its nearly quarter-acre lot for large gatherings. 95 per cent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, focuses on former Sears, Roebuck president Julius Rosenwald of Chicago, who worked with Booker T. Washington to help African-American communities build more than 5,300 schools in the brutally segregated South. In addition to copious living and exhibit space, Kempner wanted custom metal- and tilework that would pay homage to Antoni Gaudi, the Catalan architect famed for his use of sinuous ironwork, intricate mosaic and stained glass throughout Spain, and to the vivid colours of her mother’s art. Kempner also sought to showcase handmade tiles from the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. The eight-month renovation was sufficiently complete in 2011 for Kempner to move in and start to decorate and curate what easily could be an intimate house museum: elaborately carved antique French china cabinets and sideboards, and charming primitive folk pieces, modernist leather furniture and carefully chosen pieces of Judaica, baseball and po-

litical memorabilia. In her tony neighbourhood, where a 1994 mansion near Kempner’s home carries a $22 million price tag, not everyone delights in the transformation of her grassy front lawn into a Gaudi-esque sculpture garden complete with a five-foot painted hand meant to promote D.C. voting rights. The daughter of a Polish mother who passed as a Catholic in a German work camp, and a Lithuanian-immigrant father who served in the U.S. army in postwar Germany, the Berlin-born Kempner arrived in Detroit at age three. To help execute her singular vision of home, she gave creative licence to three artisans who have worked for her over the years, including Axel Vasquez, 25, and his brother Byron Vasquez, 31. After Kempner showed them books of Gaudi’s work, especially Barcelona’s Park Guell, Axel, a self-taught mosaic master, tiled parts of the walkways, stairs and retaining walls built by Byron. Meanwhile, her longtime landscaper, Donald Redditt of Accokeek, Maryland, came alive when Kempner

Instead, he faux-finished them in what seems like 50 shades of blue. “Clearly he had other ideas, and I loved it,” said Kempner. The trio’s handiwork starts at the curb, where Axel’s mosaics are sunk into Byron’s brick and concrete pathways, which then wind past Redditt’s flowering shrubs, trees and potted plants, to continue around the house to the back. There, more mosaics brighten walkways, walls, tables and bird baths. Enter the bright-blue front door and the first thing one sees is a curved staircase that spirals up two levels. On the ascending wall are three of pro baseball’s most famous Jewish players — catcher and coach Moe Berg, southpaw pitcher Sandy Koufax and, of course, super slugger Greenberg — rendered in wool by fibre artist Leslie Kuter, who lived in Washington from the 1970s to the ’90s. To the right of the stairs, a pair of intricate wroughtiron gates from Kempner’s childhood home opens to the

living room. Cream walls are trimmed in red, the better to show off a fireplace framed in contemporary American tiles made to look as if they’d been rescued from some grand art nouveau mansion. The Gaudi homage is repeated at the rear of the living room: swirling ironwork visible through windows and custom wooden doors that create a visual link to the patio. To the left is the dining room, its walls and ceiling painted a muted blue. The adjoining kitchen, with its cream walls, boasts a navy sink and lighter blue tiles trimmed in florals and geometrics on the counters and floor. One set of ceilinghung blue-hued cabinets has glass doors on both sides, through which hand-glazed Armenian dishes, most in patterns of azure, are visible. The second floor is her refuge, with the master bedroom painted a deep rose and cream. A door at the far end of the room opens to reveal another salute to Gaudi, a wrought-iron Juliet balcony overlooking the back yard. Here, “I lie in bed and feel like I’m in a tree house,” she said.

Design blogger a hoarder of beautiful things Jura Koncius The Washington Post If you follow Eddie Ross on Instagram, you may wonder where this guy is putting all the silver strawberry spoons, purple canning jars, Italian ceramic monkeys and stacks of gold-rimmed china he is constantly scoring at flea markets and t h r i f t shops. Well, in his new Eddie book, ModRoss ern Mix: Curating Personal Style With Chic & Accessible Finds, which he wrote with his partner Jaithan Kochar, the design blogger expounds on how to find and live with things you love. All of them. Ross, 36, who is also the East Coast editor of Better Homes & Gardens, has always championed the lush life and the mix of old and new in decorating and entertaining. He has styled vignettes and parties for

House Beautiful and appeared in Bravo’s Top Design series and on HGTV specials. Ross loves nothing more than poking through second-hand stores and estate sales, hunting for affordable pieces to add to his collections. The best thrifting picks, he advises, are often at Salvation Army or Goodwill stores near affluent neighbourhoods. And in his book he explains how to mix it all up, creating table settings and artful coffee table vignettes. Ross and Kochar have an apartment in East Harlem and are looking to buy a place in Connecticut; they recently sold Pine Hill Farm, the cosy and colourful country home that appears in many photos in the book. And although they have things in storage even after a huge tag sale, they are ready to start collecting more stuff for the next round. I spoke to Ross last week and asked him to dish on fall entertaining and living with lots of stuff.

Q:

What are some ways to bring fall into your home? A: Look at mums in a new

Market. There are lots of great vintage linens out there, too. Throw napkins in the washer and dryer; they don’t always need to be pressed to perfection. Tie them in a knot and throw them on a plate and no one will know they aren’t perfectly ironed. Find a cool soup tureen; this is a multipurpose item that can hold a stew or a flower arrangement. Buy a cake pedestal; they add height and can be used for lots of things such as hors d’oeuvres, desserts and baked brie. photos: Bryan E. McCay/Modern Mix

‘Wintry sunset hues in the fabric bestow a moody glow, inspiring the table’s ethereal palette of amethyst, silver and gunmetal grey,’ Ross writes in Modern Mix. way. I have seen so many different varieties and colours this year. Look at fall as purple or bright green or even fuchsia. Meanwhile, put something fallish both at the outside entrance of your house and inside the front door. Think of other places that are focal points, such as a mantel or coffee table, and add fall things.

Q: What are the five things

you should own if you are going to be doing holiday entertaining? A: Have a nice set of mixand-match flatware. You can pick up all kinds of pieces out there. I use silver plate and put it in the dishwasher and it’s fine. Get a set of modernist glassware from Crate and Barrel and mix it with a vintage set. Linen napkins are a must, even if they’re from World

Q: How should you stock a bar cart?

A: You need a great pitcher

or a jug, an ice bucket, stirring spoon, cocktail shaker and glasses to serve drinks on the rocks. I have seen lots of people put wine bottles and wine glasses on a bar cart, but you don’t want your wine sitting out. A bar cart is to serve cocktails.

Q:

How do you inject personality into your home? A: This is one of the hardest things when it comes to decorating. Today, lots of trendy inexpensive big-

box stores sell a lot of inexpensive accessories that you might think would add personal style. But five of your friends might walk in and buy the same stuff. Thrifting, flea market and vintage shopping can add much more personal looks with the things you uncover.

Q: What is a modern mix? A: For me, it’s captivating

combinations of new and old, simple and elaborate, rough and refined. I like pattern on pattern and layers of colour. Today, people aren’t living with everything just old or everything just new. It’s about educating your eye.

Q:

So what would Marie Kondo of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up have to say about your love of stuff ? A: There is a reason for everything that is at my house. I am very organized on my shelving and in my drawers. Being orderly is key if you have a lot of things. I know where each and every piece is. Just call me a hoarder of beautiful things.
