Canadians are always welcome! By CAROL TODD Minot is not only the perfect city for family getaways and couples’ weekends, it’s also a shopping and tourism mecca for Canadians, especially those from southern Saskatchewan. Now, with multi-million dollar upgrades to the downtown infrastructure and to the popular Dakota Square Mall, along with completion of the newest and largest airport in the state and the new Pepsi Arena, there are even more reasons to head south. Phyllis Burckhard, executive director of the Minot Convention and Visitors Bureau, says the city welcomes Canadians. “We always look for our Canadian visitors. We encourage people to come down. The shopping is great both downtown and Dakota Square and other areas in the city, and with all the attractions, people can see whatever their interests are.” Statistics Canada estimates there were 358,600 total person-visits from Saskatchewan to North Dakota in 2012 (the most recent year figures are available), with most of them (65.5 per cent) traveling for pleasure. More than half the visits were same-day trips. While there are no direct flights from Canada

to Minot, Burckhard says many people visit Minot on their way elsewhere. “Many of our visitors stop over for a day or two on their way to or from other destinations,” she says, adding that the recent completion of the Minot International Airport makes that option even more attractive. The airport offers excellent parking, and many Minot hotels also offer parking for those travellers along with shuttle service to the airport. The main way to get there from here is by road. If you drive yourself, it’s an easy afternoon’s drive of 244 miles or 393 kilometers from Regina to Minot. There are numerous border crossings dotting what is the longest undefended border in the world, several of them in Saskatchewan. The relationship between Saskatchewan and Minot is so strong, in fact, that the Minot Convention and Visitors Bureau regularly has a booth at the Regina Spring Home Show. This year Burckhard will again be at the show, telling Reginans about the wonders of the Magic City and offering numerous prize packages. The Spring Home Show celebrates its 41st year this year and is being held from Mar. 30 to Apr. 2 at the Canada Centre Building, Evraz Place, in Regina. There’s a wealth of information on the Visit

Minot website: www.visitminot.org. Visitors can use the My Map feature of the website to select the places they are interested in visiting and add them all to a personalized map of Minot. The map includes contact information for each venue and is printable so it can be taken on the trip. Don’t fret if you didn’t plan far enough ahead to print the map. Visitors can access the handy mobile site from anywhere. The website also features a link to valuable coupons, information on events happening in Minot, and information specific to Canadians at www.visitminot.org/canadian-info/. And coupon books and all the information a visitor might need are also available at the Visitors Centre, located at 1020 South Broadway, inside the Scandinavian Heritage Center.. There’s little point in shopping if you can’t take it home with you, and Canadians staying more than 24 hours can take advantage of some exemptions to the duties levied on imported goods. • Personal exemptions do not apply to sameday cross-border shoppers. • After 24 hours or more, Canadians can take back goods valued at up to $200 (CAN). Alcohol and tobacco cannot be claimed. Goods must be in possession at time of entry to Canada. If the

value of the goods exceeds $200 after a 24-hour absence, duty and taxes are applicable on the entire amount of the imported goods. • After 48 hours or more, Canadians can bring home goods valued up to $800 (CAN) including alcohol and tobacco, within the prescribed limits set by provincial or territorial authorities. Goods must be in your possession. • After seven days or more, the maximum is also $800 (CAN) including alcohol and tobacco products. But, goods may be in possession at time of entry to Canada or can be sent later through courier, mail or delivery agency, except alcohol and tobacco, which must be in possession. All the goods will qualify for duty- and tax-

A winning combination What better combination than classic cars and equally classic music? A brand-new event for Minot will bring lots of both to the Magic City on May 12 and 13. During the Music Stars & Classic Cars event, the vehicles take centre stage during the day at Dakota Square Mall from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. It features 1,800 stadium seats plus another 250 barstool seats that extend around the rink, four indoor ticket windows, a merchandise store, LED lighting and improved handicapped seating from the other two rinks at Maysa Arena. In addition to being a music venue, the arena is also home to the Minotauros, Minot State and the Minot High girls and boys hockey teams. iMagicon returns to Magic Minot iMagicon, Minot’s comic/gaming convention, is back and expanding. With an eclectic focus on gaming, comics, cosplay, LARPing and more, iMagicon has quickly grown to be a main attraction in Minot. This year’s event will be held Apr. 28 to 30, at the Holiday Inn-Riverside and features a collaborative daily Draw Off competitions, video gaming tournaments, Magic the Gathering tournaments, Ninja training, Cosplay contests, board gaming, shopping and more. A really Norsk Høstfest line-up announced big show! By CAROL TODD

International comedic sensation Jeff Dunham and critically acclaimed 70s rock band – The Doobie Brothers – are set to headline the 2017 40th Anniversary Norsk Høstfest. North America’s largest Scandinavian festival kicks off Tues. evening, Sept. 27, with the Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame honoree banquet and RV Pre-Party. Festival doors open at 7:30 a.m., Wed. to Sat., (Sept 27-30) with breakfast, followed by entertainment and shopping beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting well through the evening. Scheduled to appear in The Great Hall of the Vikings during the four days are the Oak Ridge Boys, Celtic Thunder, Amy Grant, Jeff Dunham, Joe Diffie, John Michael Montgomery, Doobie Brothers and Little River Band. In addition to main stage entertainment, Høstfest is chockfull of free stage entertainment. New this year is country music legend Dale Watson who will perform twice a day. Høstfestivarians will also see the return of many favourite acts such as Bjøro Haaland, Ricky Nelson Remembered, Williams & Ree and Mollie B. A 40TH CELEBRATION It is a special year for the festival, which is marking its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1978, the first festival took place inside the All Seasons Arena at the North Dakota State Fair grounds. Expecting 500 people, more than twice attended. Eventually, the fire

As years followed, Norsk Høstfest continued growing to encompass the entire State Fair Center and eventually “tunneling” to outlying buildings. Many 40th anniversary celebrations are planned and a giant kransekake will be unveiled. Limited edition souvenir items such as a collector’s edition of Høstfest-Opoly, a 40th year cookbook and mugs, are available for pre-order. Høstfest has also unveiled its “Friends of Høstfest” club program which gives members a big perk of buying tickets early.

Ed Sullivan may live on only in our memories, but there’s a really big shoo, er, show, that draws a really big crowd to the North Dakota State Fair Event Center four times a year. The Spring Big One Art Craft Show is not only the first major craft show of the season, it may also

be the biggest, with more than 150 exhibitors from across the U.S. displaying their wares at more than 250 booths. One of four Big One fairs held throughout the year, the Minot Spring Show is the 26th ever held in what has become a perennial event in the Magic City. Stacy Frank, who, along with wife Lisa, operates the show, attributes its popularity to the fact that this show focuses solely on hand-crafted products. “What’s unique about our shows is that we require exhibitors to have items they’ve made by hand. That’s why people keep coming back, and back, and back,” he says. Some of the items available for sale are handcrafted wood furniture and decorative pieces, pho-
