Year-round fitness plan keeps this senior in the game BY HILARY KLASSEN OF POSTMEDIA SK SPECIAL PROJECTS
Vi Mizuno shone as a track athlete in high school, but she didn’t start breaking records until she joined the 55-plus club. In Grade 11, Mizuno placed second in high jump in the province. Back then she likely never imagined smashing track records later in life. It started when Mizuno transitioned from Fitness for $10 to the Saskatchewan Seniors Fitness Association (SSFA) because she was getting into track. “I used to do it in high school years ago, and I picked it up again and realized I could still kind of do it,” she says. “Kind of” is not the operative word. She can definitely do it! With the help of her coach, Mizuno prepared for and participated in the Provincial 55+ Games in Humboldt last July, and won a couple of gold medals and a silver. She also broke the record in the Pentathlon event which includes shot put, javelin, discus, hammer and weight throw. That qualified her for the nationals, the Canada 55+ Games in Sherwood Park in August
2014. At the nationals, Mizuno broke the Canadian record for javelin. She was pretty low-key about it at first. “The coaches were more excited than I was. I didn’t know it was a big deal. I didn’t know what the records were,” she says. “It was good just to be part of the games again.” Later on she realized it was quite an accomplishment. Along the way, Mizuno became part of a scientific study through the Kinesiology Department at the University of Saskatchewan. Half the participants take a supplement called Creatine, and half don’t. Creatine is a supplement designed to build muscle and sustain bone mass. As part of the study Mizuno also does a fitness workout. “It’s three days a week in the gym, weight lifting and that kind of thing, and then I’ve got a track coach who sets up my exercises, so I do the weight throw plus whatever I need to do with my arms to be able to throw.” This became part of the preparation for the games to build strength in the arms and the upper body. Mizuno says several
of her friends who also joined the Creatine study have already dropped out. What’s the secret to her endurance? “I keep a routine all the time. In winter, I play volleyball Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Right after volleyball I go straight to the gym, so I do those two things right away and then I’m done for the day. It’s kind of nice you know where you’re supposed to be that day and you get it over with and you can do whatever you want after that.” But it doesn’t stop there. Mizuno is also a Saskatchewan Masters Athlete and will be attending the provincials in Regina. She’ll participate in a weight pentathlon in July as well as mini-games to prepare for the provincials in 2016, and she just completed two other competitions. Provincial and national competitions happen every second year. Various motivations keep Mizuno engaged in her fitness goals. One is the competitive aspect. “I love competitions. I used to do a lot of it. I love being competitive and doing sports, which I’ve always been involved in. I grew
up with four brothers and no sisters, so if they could play, so could I and they dragged me along.” Another is the social aspect. “I don’t like staying at home. I love meeting new people,” she says. Another obvious benefit is physical fitness. “It’s nice to be fit too and have fun doing it.” Mizuno is not fond of the gym, which can become tedious as you do versions of the same thing over and over again. “But with track, it’s more varied and you’re going to different places. Nationals will be in Ontario next year, so you’re doing a lot of traveling too with it which I really enjoy,” she says. Recreational sports are a big part of Mizuno’s life as well. Volleyball, slow pitch, biking, golf and tennis are all activities she does regularly and greatly enjoys, even though she says she has bad knees and can’t run anymore. Mizuno serves on the SSFA executive as coordinator for volleyball. Volunteering and organizing fundraisers is a more recent passion. “I enjoy that. I like details and working out CONTINUED ON PAGE C9

Growing evidence indicates that older adults with hearing loss are more likely to experience the symptoms of cognitive decline. Hearing aids can improve the negative effects of hearing loss on the brain.
YOUR HEARING AND YOUR BRAIN
Think of hearing as a partnership between your ears and your brain. When someone speaks, your brain processes the sounds so that you can understand them. That’s called cognitive load. When you have untreated hearing loss, the speech signals coming in to your brain are degraded, so your brain has to work much harder to process them. When more brain resources are used for understanding sounds, other brain tasks such as memory and comprehension can suffer.
EFFECTS OF UNTREATED HEARING LOSS Hearing loss isn’t just an ear issue; it’s a quality of life and health issue. Untreated hearing loss can have serious and wideranging consequences1: • Increased mental fatigue • Poorer memory • Poorer mental health • Social withdrawal • Depression Hearing aids can lessen the cognitive load on your brain as well as help improve feelings of isolation and depression.
HEARING AIDS CAN HELP
Hearing aids process sound signals so it’s easier for your brain to understand them. They also reduce the cognitive load, making it easier for your brain to perform other tasks. Benefits of wearing hearing aids may include2: A Johns Hopkins Study • Reduced mental fatigue found that cognitive • Decreased feelings of isolation diminishment was 41% and depression greater in seniors with • Improved memory, attention & focus hearing loss.3 • Improved communication skills

Fire safety for seniors an increasing concern BY SHERRY MCCORMICK FOR POSTMEDIA SK SPECIAL PROJECTS
In recent years, Regina seniors have become increasingly affected by fire. In the 1980s, the city’s fire fatalities among individuals 55 and older were only seven per cent of the total fatalities by fire but, by the
sages are keys to how fires can be prevented. One of the things we did was to reach out to the Regina Senior Citizens Centre and Regina Housing Authority. Their staff work hard to ensure these key messages are passed along to the populations we are trying

2000s, that number had climbed to 31 per cent. Regina Fire & Protective Services has developed educational programming to address the increasing fire related issues seen in the aging population. “We want to keep our seniors safe by not only making them aware of potential risks, but also by providing our seniors with information that will empower them to prevent a fire,” says Angela Prawzick, the department’s public education officer. Candace Liskowich, public education officer with Regina Fire & Protective Services says, “Our mes-
to reach.” Prawzick said, “In the aftermath of fire incidents, the fire department’s fire investigators determine the behaviours that caused these fires. We want to change those behaviours and make our messages as relevant as possible to our community. We like to arm our seniors with the information they need to know about how to prevent a fire, and ensure they also know what to do if a fire occurs.” The key messages are: • If you smoke, do it outside. If you do smoke in your home, use deep, sturdy ashtrays. Wet ciga-
rette butts and ashes before throwing them out. Never smoke if medical oxygen is used in the home. • If you use space heaters, keep them at least one metre away from anything that can burn. If you leave the room or go to bed, shut the heater off and unplug it. • Never overload wall sockets. Never run cords under rugs or mats. • Stay in the kitchen when cooking. If a pan of food catches fire, slide a lid over it and turn off the burner. • Plan your great escape! If the smoke alarms sounds, get out quickly and go to your pre-arranged meeting place. • If your clothes catch on fire, stop, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands and roll back and forth. Use cool water for 3 to 5 minutes to cool a burn and get medical help right away. • Know your local emergency number, 9-1-1. Once you have escaped a fire, call the fire department from a neighbour’s phone or a mobile phone. • Plan your escape around your abilities. Have a telephone in your bedroom. Have other necessary items near your bed, such as medications, glasses, wheel chair, walker, scooter or cane. • When escaping from fire, never go back inside! If you’re in an apartment
building and encounter smoke in the hallway, stay in your suite, close the doors and call 9-1-1. Prawzick said, “Fires can occur and spread quickly. It is important to have a working smoke alarm in
your home. Statistics have shown that more than half of fire fatalities in Regina have occurred without a working smoke alarm. “As we look at the leading causes of fires among seniors in Regina, we see
that smoking is the primary cause of death. Seniors have also died in fires caused by careless cooking. Fires are not accidents, they are caused by careless behaviours and that can be changed,” said Prawzick.

Gourmet chef makes a difference BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH OF POSTMEDIA SK SPECIAL PROJECTS
When the owners began planning Parkville Manor, director of operations Michele Pelletier says, offering a flavourful, healthy dining experience was of vital importance. “We’ve got more Red Seal chefs than some hotels,” says Pelletier. “We just took it upon ourselves that this is what we do.” Each menu is planned by executive chef Roger Johnston after consultation with his team of chefs. He lets them choose dishes they’re passionate about, while keeping in mind Canada’s Food Guide. He loves that Parkville Manor isn’t as cost-conscious as other institutions he’s worked at. This allows the team more room to be creative. The chefs use real cream and butter for making sauces. Fresh herbs – grown by a resident on site during the summer – are used to add colour and flavour. One of the favourite menu choices is ribs – of any flavour – but the list of menu items covers a wide range of tastes. Residents feast on offerings like prime rib, rack of lamb, steaks, lamb curries, scallops, crab cakes, grilled pork tenderloin and desserts like raspberry crème caramel. Johnston’s team also regularly stocks the snack room with cookies and muffins. Everything is made from scratch and onsite. Pelletier says the soups are absolutely amazing. Everyone raves about Johnston’s pizza soup – every spoonful tastes like a bite of pizza. Themed multi-cultural

nights are planned frequently. It’s a chance to laugh and enjoy exotic cuisine. Johnston is known to dress up in costumes in keeping with the theme. With one staff chef from Morocco and another from the Philippines, there are always culturally diverse flavours being served from the kitchen. Supper goes from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and typically serves around 80 people. Each supper includes a choice of three proteins and an array of side dishes. While many seniors’ complexes offer meals with a cart and aisle system, Parkville Manor offers table service. A server visits each
table and diners select their choice of protein and sides. Wine service is also offered. Clients may bring their own wine to the table if they prefer. In addition to the effort of creating delicious food, a lot of effort is put into presentation. “Not only is there passion outside on the front line,” says Jamie Pfeifer, wellness coordinator, “but the passion behind the line is incredible and that really shows when the plates come out.” Johnston also adds other special services for residents, such as creating sick trays to deliver to those under the weather. Clients
who have medical treatments, like dialysis, in the evenings are provided with a meal they can reheat upon return. Bag lunches are provided when Pfeifer takes residents out for an excursion. Brunch is served every Sunday for families. Johnston can cater private functions, as well, in a separate dining hall or ballroom for special occasions. “Just because you move into Parkville Manor doesn’t mean all your traditions have to stop. So we have the family suppers. We have Christmas gatherings,” says Pfeifer. “A big thing in this environment is that you build
relationships and bonds with our clients,” says Johnston. “You know who you’re cooking for here. Other places you see them once in a while. Here you see them every day and you can form relationships. They stop and chat with you. You get to know them on a first name basis. And that’s a rewarding aspect of the job.” Johnston even makes

BRIGHTWATER CONTINUED FROM PAGE C6 In addition to Spa W, there’s a salon, fitness centre, chapel, bistro, theatre, and library and tech centre. Offering these services right in their new home makes it easier for residents to access, and so enhances their quality of life in a way that would have been much more difficult in their former home. MEMORY CARE AT BRIGHTWATER OF RIVERBEND Improving quality of life is also a priority at Brightwater Senior Living of Riverbend in Regina. The Riverbend location specializes in memory care and dementia, and currently has 65 beds, though they are in the process of expanding. The neighbourhoods are
split up into homes where each bedroom has its own bathroom, but all the rooms are connected to shared living spaces. There is always staff nearby, ready to help. Tracy Naka, executive director of Brightwater of Riverbend and a licensed practical nurse, says it feels like one big family. “We all enjoy our work here,” she says. “We don’t even think of it as work; it’s a passion for us.” They have individualized care plans for each of their residents that family members help to create. They encourage residents to bring in scrapbooks, family photos, and anything else they take pride in. Each room has a shadowbox outside the door filled with familiar mementos

out the logistics for things. It’s kind of my niche. Organizing, getting things done, events, getting volunteers, threatening people, that kind of thing – it works,” she laughs. Mizuno also volunteers with Dress for Success and bikes for MS fundraisers. Vi and her husband Massey plan to teach English in Japan for a couple of years after he retires, likely next year. In the meantime she’ll keep competing, to some extent with herself. “It’s been fun. Now I have to break that record and keep going,” she says. to personalize their space, and help them find their room. “Everything has to be as familiar as possible when they come into our building,” says Naka. Every day is jam-packed with activities. Each month they “arm chair travel” to a new country by watching films and eating food from the region. They hold walking clubs inside, and outside when the weather is nice. They do sitting exercises, play bolaball, and have shuffleboard competitions. But one of the most popular activities is the art studio. “You would be amazed at how these people can do their

It’s phenomenal what they will do.” On May 29, Brightwater of Riverbend will hold a public art reception from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Residents’ framed works of art will be on display.

Safety measures reduce bathroom injuries Falls cause many injuries inside a home. Seniors are especially susceptible to harmful falls in the bathroom, where slippery tiles can prove too difficult for older men and women to navigate. Installing safety features in the bathroom is a key way to reduce the risk of accidents. Many manufacturers have even designed these features so they blend with
$
bathroom decor. When renovating bathrooms for safety, consider the following options: ANTI-SCALD FEATURES: Burns can be serious business. Anti-scald showerheads and faucets prevent sudden bursts of hot water. Use in conjunction with turning down the temperature of the hot water heater to eliminate burns.
NONSLIP MATS: Having a non-slip mat on the inside of the shower or tub as well as one with a grippable surface and plush top layer on which to step after exiting the shower can reduce falls. Consider converting your conventional tub to a walkin shower for added safety. BATH BENCH: The elderly or those prone to lightheadedness in the shower may
want to invest in a bench or seat to put into the shower. This enables sitting while washing. SAFETY BARS: It can be tempting to grab onto towel racks or faucets to get in and out of the shower, but these items cannot provide the necessary leverage to safely move in and out of the shower or bathtub. Safety bars with a
brushed surface for traction are more secure. Grab bars need to be securely attached to a wood stud in the wall and not into drywall or the tub enclosure. RAISED TOILET SEAT: A raised toilet seat reduces the amount of squatting and the distance that has to be covered to sit on the commode. Grab bars on the raised seat itself will provide
added safety. TELEPHONE: The bathroom may seem an odd place to install a telephone, but having one nearby in the event of injury can ensure help gets to the injured party much more quickly. Bathrooms can present many dangers, but certain safety tools and renovations can help reduce the risk of injury. (MNS)
