Chandeliers: Where art meets food

ake a great downtown location. Add in some dazzling décor. Sprinkle that with a generous amount of experience working in some of Saskatoon’s finest restaurants. That’s the recipe that led to the creation of Saskatoon’s newest offering in first class dining – Chandeliers. “The chef, Behroz [Bruce] Rahmani and I worked together for about 13 years. We were at John’s and more recently at John’s Victorian in the north end,” says manager and part owner Nick Makohon. “After John’s Victorian closed, Bruce wanted to do something similar. He looked around town and found this location.” The location Makohon refers to is a storied one in the Drinkle No. 3 building on Third Avenue. Its 10,000-plus square feet of space were ideal for the concept of extraordinary dining that the partners had in mind. “We spent three months renovating,” Makohon reports. “It was mostly cosmetic – new tables, new carpet and new paint.” The change most commented on, he adds, is the fine art on the wall. Gold-adorned 3D sculptures greet patrons, creating an ambience of culture and elegance. By the Romanian artist Golbby, the pieces literally pop out of the walls, creating a fine texture that adds to the atmosphere. Though the restaurant seats 160, the layout is ideal for any

size group. Nooks and crannies in the main dining area, as well as separated spaces, mean parties can enjoy both the ambience and privacy while savouring the menu at Chandeliers. Savouring is where Chandeliers excels, Makohon says. “We’re a steak restaurant – about 75 per cent of what we serve are steaks. But we offer a full menu for dinner. People can find a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, pastas and seafood. We also offer ribs, lamb and chicken.” He notes that Chandeliers’ Dinner for Two is really popular, especially for romantic and special occasions. “You can share an appetizer, followed by salad and then steak, lobster and crab. It’s a great value for everything you get.” The lunch menu sees an array of sandwiches, soups and salads. “We offer the full dining experience,” Makohon says. “You can enjoy the great quality food but we have tablecloths, napkins and all in this fabulous location. Not everybody offers that.” This is all complemented by a world-class wine and spirits menu, and even occasional live music. After just 16 months in business, Makohon says it’s clear why people love Chandeliers. “I ask customers and they tell me it’s the ambience. They say the architecture is unique. ‘It’s the place,’ they say. “Some people have called us old school but that’s not a bad label to have,” he continues. “We do things traditionally here.

Chandeliers Fine Dining has created an exceptional dining experience in downtown Saskatoon.

We offer generous portions so people don’t go away hungry and bread is included with every meal. The bread sounds basic but I’ve been to some places where it’s not even offered.” Located in the Drinkle No. 3 building at 119 Third Avenue South, Chandeliers is open Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to close. It’s also open from 4:00 p.m. to closing on Saturdays but closed on Sundays. For more information and a preview of the menu, visit chandeliers.club on the Internet or call 306-2440024. Do you want to enjoy this

egan Powell, interim marketing director says this spring has brought a rainbow of colours to Lawson Heights Mall. Super brights – such as vivid yellows, bright blues, passionate pinks, and raving reds – are everywhere this season. But so are pastels – the so-called “Easter” colours as Powell says – with soft mint greens, pale salmons, barely pink and cheery yellows adding contrast. If you’re feeling a little nostalgic when visiting the mall, there is a hint of 80s redux in some of the fashion. It’s not just the rainbow-bright colours, either. Metallic flavours, high sheen, colourful jewellery and bulkier silhouettes are bringing a definite 80s vibe to spring trends. Another trend that’s hard to miss in the Mall these days are floral prints. While seeing floral prints is nothing new for spring, it is new to see so many fashions offer all-over blooms. Head to toe – from shoes and boots

to leggings and dresses – this spring fashion has embraced floral prints in every way. Even accessories such as scarves and hats brim with blossoms. “We’re even seeing the floral prints on shoes,” says Powell. “It’s fun!” Finding a dress this summer will make for effortless style. “A dress for summer – whether you have weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, grads – you’re going to need a dress for something,” Powell notes. Powell identified the quintessential piece for spring as the black blazer in the Mall’s Lifeguide (available on their website, www.mallatlawsonheights. com). The blazer is simple, classic and incredibly versatile. Paired with a pastel tank and ankle-length pants, the blazer goes to work. Or use it to dress up a pair of your favourite jeans for a weekend lunch date. Powell adds, “You can personalize it by choosing whatever colour you please. Of course, black generally goes with everything.”

ON OUR COVER This dress is all about spring! She Model Vivian presents this flattering jersey knit faux wrap dress from Laura Canada in Lawson Heights Mall with a fresh floral pattern, short sleeves and summery hues of yellow, white and navy. It can be worn on its own – perfect for a summer wedding – or pop this beautiful navy blazer over top and wear it to the office. Vivian’s look is accented by a scarf choker, white and gold bracelet, and David Jones nude coloured bag, all from Laura. Nude strappy heels in genuine leather are from Le Chateau’s Flex line. Vivian’s hair artistry was created compliments of the talented design team at Chatters Salon in Lawson Heights Mall. PHOTO: ELAINE MARK/D&M IMAGES

A cropped blazer is also a great addition and is very flattering over a pretty summer dress. “Vivian (our cover model) is wearing a navy blazer which also goes with so much. For spring, it’s a little different than the black. It’s a little brighter,” says Powell. For spring, everyone loves the light and airy layers. Skirts and dresses boast sheer overlays and inserts for a flirty look that still keeps things cool. Of course, it wouldn’t be spring or summer without denim. This spring, denim is getting an extra boost. A white denim jacket has become the best cover-up for simple summer dresses or even a colourful blouse for work. With so many sleeveless and exposed shoulder looks, Powell says the denim jacket will be your go-to piece. Spring is a great time to update your purse or handbag. Lawson stores like Laura, Twisted Goods, Bentley, Le Chateau, and Maurices offer some great bags in fun spring hues. Shoes this year feature lots of straps or cut-outs. Strappy sandals pair beautifully with summer dresses. The kitten heel is another trend that offers a comfortable heel height that will take you from the office to drinks on the patio in style.

ON OUR COVER She Model Madison is a smash with a lovely maxi dress from Maurices in Lawson Heights Mall. This maxi dress with lace top can take you anywhere this summer. Dressed down with a denim jacket, it’s perfect for a casual night out. The matching cropped blazer in dusty rose, also from Maurice’s, makes it more formal. The sheer skirt of the dress is partially lined to keep it light and airy. Shoes, necklace, bangles and clutch are all available at Maurices where you’ll find the freshest spring trends from sizes 2 to 24. Madison’s hair artistry was created compliments of the talented design team at Chatters Salon in Lawson Heights Mall.

Finding everything you need to refresh your wardrobe or your home fashion is waiting at Lawson Mall. In the last few years the Mall has become a one-stop shop for everyone. Several stores offer petites and plus sizes. Maurices carries clothing from sizes 2 to 24. They also carry shoes and accessories. Laura carries petites, regular and plus sizes. Cleo carries petite and regular sizes. Change Lingerie has a premium collection of swimwear that will have you hitting the waves or pool looking spectacular. The Mall has seen some recently renovated stores reopen. Warehouse One recently located into a new brighter space next to Le Chateau. The new store is definitely worth checking out for casual wear for both men and women. Rogers also opened a modern storefront next to the food court. This spring will see the opening of Brown Social House at the southwest corner of the Mall parking lot. There’s always something exciting and new going on at Lawson Heights Mall. And every season over 100 stores and services offer up the latest fashion trends for your home and your closet.

Oh-so-sophisticated! A return to

classic

By Jeannie Armstrong

Epitomizing that trend is Montreal designer Iris Setlakwe, whose new collection Kamal is particularly passionate about. Setlakwe’s sophisticated statement jackets, dresses, skirts and pants stand out for their exceptional fit, superior fabrics and feminine details. Matching coat/dress combinations have definitely captured Kamal’s interest. “It’s my dream outfit; I just latch on to it. There’s nothing more classic. I’ve been able to find a lot of matching pieces this season for the store,” she says. “I find women have an appetite this season for fashions that are more structured and tailored. There’s a collection of suiting by Barbara LeBek that I brought in from Germany in sizes two to 18. I didn’t even have a chance to merchandise them and we only have three left.” Another fashion line that Kamal is excited to share with

Saskatoon fashionistas is by Nadya Toto. Acclaimed for her pure, elegant designs, the Montrealer has made incredible fabrics the stars of her collection. “She’s created superb signature dresses from the most amazing four-way stretch fabric. It’s so stunning on the body. It just creates the most gorgeous form. It’s nice to see that some of the designers are not afraid to use some of the more expensive fabrics, because with those fabrics you’re going to get a better look. Always.” A growing number of designers are turning fashion inside out, literally. “There are lots of reversible garments this season — tops, dresses, pants. We have quite a few reversible pieces this season. They’re ideal when you’re travelling because they really maximize

your wardrobe choices,” says Kamal. Italian fashion brand Eroke has gained a strong following for its reversible dresses. Simply turn the dress inside out and a totally different pattern is revealed. Who can resist two dresses for the price of one? Canadian fashion icon Simon Chang, as well as the Italian fashion line Ecla, have both shown their versatility by including designs in their collections which can be worn front-to-back and back-tofront. Klassique Designs continues to dominate the evening wear market, attracting clients from across western Canada. For red carpet events, weddings, proms and graduation, a gown from Klassique is sure to create a sensation. “Evening wear is moving back to a really romantic look. There are so many beautiful laces and fine detailing like

beads, jewels and sequins. The silhouettes of the dresses are simpler and sleeker. It’s all about the shape,” says Kamal. “The colours are very sophisticated — a lot of neutral tones, including white, champagne, blush, pale pink, grey and navy.” Klassique’s evening wear collection is curated from the fashion capitals of the world, with labels that include Alyce Paris and award-winning American designer Tony Bowls. Each grad season, Klassique dresses over 300 young women in amazing gowns. Kamal keeps a computerized spread sheet to ensure that no dress will show up twice at the same grad festivities. “We have a lot of experience at this. We know how to fit the girls and help them find that perfect dress they’ve been dreaming about,” says Kamal.

KLASSIQUE DESIGNS Klassique Designs presents She model Brianne Sikorski in a stunning ivory twopiece ensemble by Montreal designer Iris Setlakwe. The wrap-style long jacket and tailored pant are the epitome of sophistication. A lacy tank top completes Brianne’s sensational look. efined, elegant, sophisticated… That’s Kajoo Kamal’s take on the new fashion trends for Spring/ Summer 2017. For 35 years, Kamal has presided over Saskatoon’s fashion scene as the founder of Klassique Designs in Scotia Centre. She couldn’t be more excited about the current fashion season. “Fashion is more streamlined, more polished, more lady-like for spring. I’m so pleased. For a whole generation of women, this is a brand new look — the sophistication of a dress with a coat, the return to three- or even fourpiece suiting,” says Kamal. “I think it’s a lovely time in fashion. I feel like there are a lot of choices and ways for women to express their individuality.”

She says two strong colour trends have emerged for Spring/Summer 2017. “There’s tone-on-tone-on-tone with colours like oyster, pale pink, blush, beige, champagne and taupe,” says Kamal. “On the other end of the spectrum are loud, vibrant shades of orange, fuchsia, royal blue and lime. There’s lots and lots of colour in both solids and prints.” In recent years, black-andwhite combinations have dominated spring and summer dressing. “This year, there’s hardly any,” says Kamal. Navy is the new black, especially in evening wear, she adds. “Navy is also a great accent to the off-white, beige and pink tones.” Silhouettes are slimmer and trimmer for spring and summer, says Kamal. “The suiting is very tailored, very sleek. The lines are clean and classic. It’s not something you can wear a loose, flowy top over.”

pring is all about comfort and easy, breezy style. Whether it’s a colourful tank top that can take you from drinks on the patio to work-aday wear, or the perfect spring dress for a special occasion, Gentries in the Scotia Centre has you covered. Owner Tammy Kehoe says finding inspiration this season is a snap with versatile styles and colours that will flatter everyone. It seems denim is huge this season – with denim vests, skirts, dress and the ever-popular denim jacket – all finding their way onto shelves and racks. The denim look is also common in other colours as well – so a white denim jacket can be a perfect combo with a juicy tank in bright pink. Some of the denim styles are coming in a lightweight fabric that makes for a drapey-flowey pant or light blouse. The first thing on everyone’s mind this spring is colour. Fresh, bold solid colours such as coral, mint green, red, pink, and a rather new addition – yellow.

“This year it seems like there’s so many different shades of yellow. It seems to go with the all the different skin tones,” says Kehoe. Coral is another popular colour this spring with many different shades from pastel to bold and intense all making appearances. “There are so many different shades of it, it seems like anyone can wear one of the shades. There’s a colour for all of us,” says Kehoe. Kehoe adds, for neutrals more and more women are turning to the deep blue. “Navy has been around for a couple of seasons now, and women are loving it.” Navy is always an easy match with the plethora of pastel tones going strong this season. A soft mint green tee paired with a navy blazer, pant or cardigan makes a relaxed summer office ensemble. The versatility in this spring’s offerings is also evident in skirt lengths. Maxi dresses are still making a splash, but there are many other skirt lengths available – such as midi, knee and

above the knee. If you’re looking for one piece to add some fresh style to your summer wardrobe, you cannot escape the shoulder-revealing trend. Dresses and tops can come in the daring off-the-shoulder look. For those who are a little less daring, you’ll find sweaters, dresses, and blouses all with the peek-a-boo shoulder trend. It’s featured in everything from dresses to every day t-shirts. Colourful accessories are still a big trend this year – especially scarves and statement jewellery. “People still really want the statement necklace for summer,” says Kehoe. A statement necklace incorporating the beautiful blues, mint greens, and corals for summer takes any outfit to the next level. “These bold statement necklaces and bracelets can really accent your outfit. With your scarf and your jewellery, all of a sudden you’ve got colour.” The colourful accessories can also liven up the perennial little black dress, a crisp white blouse or even a simple tank top.

“Outfits seem to be made to showcase the jewellery and the shoes,” adds Kehoe. While she doesn’t carry shoes in her store, she loves seeing the colourful shoes – some with prints – and thanks to the popularity of the cropped ankle pants, those shoes can be front and centre. With so many fashions showing off arms or shoulders, it makes a little shrug or cardigan absolutely essential. It can turn a tank top or sleeveless shirt into office attire, plus can keep you warm when there’s a chill in the air. For special occasions, Gentries continues to offer customers lots of choices. Alex Evenings is a line of elegant special occasion wear featuring glamourous jackets paired with either an elegant silk skirt or wide pant. The separates are easier to fit for some figures and allow women to mix and match their favourite look for their occasion – whether it’s a graduation or a wedding. All of her popular lines such as St. James, Eileen Fisher,

Tribal, and Sarah Puccini have beautiful spring collections with so many options in fabrics and styles. It seems whether it’s skirt length, cut, fabric or colour –

there is something to flatter and inspire everyone this spring. Pop into Gentries to add some spring sophistication to your wardrobe.

spring

by Susan Parr

Easy fit. Easy care. Easy to pack. Easy on the budget. Easy on the eyes. And, most of all — fun. Easy does it for spring. That is the fashion philosophy being embraced by the friendly team at Katie’s Kloset in Market Mall, a charming independent boutique featuring select Canadian and international designer brands. “We are all about fun; that’s how I describe the store,” says Pam Riemer from Katie’s Kloset. She says they started to feature Canadian designers and manufacturers once the home-grown fashions started to become available again. Canadian womenswear manufacturers all but disappeared about 20 years ago but have started to reappear in the past few years. Their designs this year are perfect for a modern woman on the go. And they are just what you need if you are a woman who loves clothes and just wants to have fun wearing them. Colours this spring run riot from cool blues and greens, to vibrant orange and watermelon pink, sometimes blocked with black or white, sometimes in patterns. Shapes are easy from body huggers, to flattering A- lines to soft and loose. Pants are a little looser this year, according to Riemer. “Capris are not as narrow as before; they are a little wider at the bottom now,” although you will still find everything from leggings to wide pants to culottes to the newest jumpsuits. You will now see denim in everything, not just pants. Dresses are important again this spring, although lengths are a little longer, according to Riemer, varying from knee-length to mid-calf to patio. This is a big change from a few years ago when Riemer said women would come into a store and buy a skirt suit with pants optional and later a pantsuit with an optional skirt. Those days are now long gone with many more flexible and flirty mix-and-match options. Tons of colourful and pretty tops pair with pants and skirts including the cold shoulder tops that we started to see the last few seasons. Pretty Woman is an example of a Vancouver-based manufacturer. Designed with real women’s bodies in mind and sizes from small to 3X, the

to flatter his spring. add some n to your

jersey fabrics in these ensembles are weighted so they hang away from the body beautifully. Colours run from turquoise to magenta to blues to patterns to solid black with camel tops. Prices start at $99 while dresses run to $120 and up. Other Canadian brands to look for include Crystal, gitanic and Bali. Crystal is a little less expensive than Pretty Woman and a little lighter fabric. Easy to pack, it features a myriad of colours, and lots of mix-and-match separates. One of the funkiest brands in Katie’s Kloset is gitanic, featuring polka dot capris, wild block colours with multi patterns or black and white. There are even touches of Lurex® trim. Lots of little layering pieces help complete an outfit. One example that could take you anywhere all summer is a cute little textured black dress with a V-neck and cap sleeves. Bali can be edgy with lots of tops to pair with elegant pants and leggings. Longer dresses feature brilliant spring colours. Tops features asymmetric or handkerchief hems, as well as flattering wrap styles. A butterfly top features wide sleeves and some of the pants feature the newest high waists. Katie’s Kloset also looks beyond Canadian borders to bring fascinating fashions to its style-conscious customers. A line from India, Baba, is also very popular, according to Riemer. These free-flowing ensembles are cool and comfortable, constructed mainly of viscose with lace trims. Great for travel, you can steam them out in the shower or hang them to damp dry. Look for pants, dressers, tops and dusters. Each outfit comes with its own scarf — great for travelling if you need to suddenly cover your head or warm your shoulders. Colours include pinks, corals, tangerine and teals. Finish your ensemble with a cute pair of Luv shoes. Look for styles with unique trims like lace, rounded heels or gold metal finishes. An interesting detail is a unique hook that works with a buckle for easy on and off. Also popular are high boots that will get you through spring and low booties that will be popular all summer. With a visit to Katie’s Kloset in Market Mall, creating a stunning spring and summer wardrobe has never been easier!

faMilY sTYle lake Vista is tailored for modern family life

2017 By Jeannie Armstrong The perfect fit. It’s the ultimate goal when shopping for fashion. It’s even more important when selecting a new home and neighbourhood for your family. North Ridge Land Division’s new master-planned community of Lake Vista, in the southeast of Martensville, is designed with today’s modern family in mind. Located on 160 acres, Lake Vista is visually appealing, home to thoughtful streetscapes, dual man-made lakes and extensive parks, linked by paved pathways. The community stands out for its feeling of connectivity, says Jessica Bonish, North Ridge Development’s marketing manager. “Lake Vista was designed to be walkable. There aren’t any little cul de sacs that block the flow through the neighbourhood. You can get to the school, the recreation centre, shops and services without having to drive all over. You can walk; you can bike. The access is ideal.” Jess Rideout, a member of the North Ridge sales team, enjoys sharing her first-hand experiences of life in Lake Vista. “Moving out here to Lake Vista was a big decision. We looked at lots in the city; we looked at other bedroom communities. Lake Vista hit most of what we were looking for: safety, family orientation, closeness to amenities, closeness to elementary and high schools, as well as a slower pace of life,” says Rideout. “We have two dogs, so we enjoy being close to the parks and the walking paths. This is a place where we can raise kids and also

retire. We’re planning for the future.” There’s a small-town vibe developing within Lake Vista that Rideout compares to “what old Saskatoon used to be like.” She adds, “Lake Vista has a noticeably slower pace of life. People stop and talk to each other. You know your neighbours. In winter, we have hockey tournaments on the lake. In summer, we have block parties. People walk their dogs together. You can go biking for ice cream or groceries, then bike home through the park without worrying about traffic.” Not only has North Ridge designed Lake Vista as a familyfriendly neighbourhood, the builder offers a diverse selection of appealing new home designs, from single family residences to the new Birchmont Townhomes development. One great example is the new North Ridge show home located at 105 Cowan Crescent. Dubbed “The Greenbay”, this 1,688 square foot two-storey is an enticing family home, incorporating all of the stylish amenities today’s modern families are seeking, at an affordable price point of $395,900. The welcoming home features an open concept floor plan, ninefoot ceiling on the main floor, a spacious designer kitchen and a combination main floor laundry/ mudroom with direct access to the attached double garage. The luxury amenities continue on the second floor, where an inviting bonus space awaits, a perfect family retreat for watching TV or playing games. “I think the upstairs is the best part of this

house,” says Rideout. “With this floor plan, the bonus space can be modified to be a fourth bedroom, so it’s ideal for growing families. If you have three kids, they can each have their own bedroom.” The master bedroom is particularly bright and spacious, featuring a delightful ensuite bath and a spacious walk-in closet with custom shelving. The Greenbay also stands out for its tasteful, contemporary style. “We kept the décor fresh and bright, with pops of colour against a modern neutral palette of grey and white,” says Bonish. The attractive kitchen is dressed in crisp white Shakerstyle cabinets, with a generously-sized island and built-in eating bar. The rustic whitewash wide plank laminate floor complements the home’s décor perfectly. “Best of all, it’s designed to stand up to heavy family use,” says Rideout. Other stylish flooring choices in the home include the use of eye-catching baroque luxury vinyl tile in the main floor powder room and the two bathrooms on the second floor. The show home’s location, just down the street from the Lake Vista joint use school, is another factor which is sure to appeal to young families. “The school is on track to open in the Fall of 2017,” says Bonish. A tour of The Greenbay show home will also open eyes to the outstanding workmanship and superior construction techniques that go into every North Ridge home. The builder backs every build

with a comprehensive quality assurance inspection protocol which includes detailed inspections at ten different stages during the construction process. In addition to coverage by the New Home Warranty Program of Saskatchewan, North Ridge also offers its own comprehensive Customer Care warranty program. “We are very pro-active. We contact our homeowners three different times during their first year of possession to ensure there are no warranty concerns,” says Bonish. “It’s one more area where North Ridge excels and one of the reasons why North Ridge was named Builder of the Year for a second consecutive year at the recent Bridges Awards.” The North Ridge Greenbay show home, at 105 Cowan Crescent in Lake Vista, is open for viewing Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 1 to 5 p.m.; Mondays to Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. For more details, visit www. northridge.sk.ca.

By Susan Parr The dean of Saskatoon men’s fashion, Elwood Flynn of Elwood Flynn for Men Ltd., has weighed in on Spring and Summer 2017 with his top eight picks for the season. After more than 60 years in the business, Flynn has developed an eye for which looks are the season’s top choices. Check out his thoughts for the brightest and the best for warm weather menswear looks: BLUES, BLUES AND MORE BLUES — fashionable men will see blue “for everything” from suits, shirts, ties and sport coats, according to Flynn. Blue suits and even bright blue sport coats are top sellers. Indeed, Flynn shows two bundles of fine blue fabric samples for custom tailored suits that have already sold out this season. Blue is not new this spring — it has been a favourite for a few seasons — but its popularity again this season is indicative of the staying power of this fashion basic. BRIGHT SPORT COATS — Look to lines like Warren K. Cook and Valenza for bright coloured blazers in goodenough-to-eat colours like creamsicle, brandy, champagne, burnt orange, electric blue, and magenta. “Warren K. Cook captures the mood and look that sets a man apart,” notes Flynn. Cook is a master tailor who assures the finest cut, fit and details right down to the last button. Flynn also highlights Valenza as a brand on the forefront of spring looks for men. “Both lines come in fine micro weave merino wool worsted hopsack in superb styling,” says Flynn. SAVVY SUITS — Among the dis-

tinctive choices at Elwood Flynn are Hugo Boss and Ted Baker suits and sports coats. Some styles with Boss labels tend to be a little narrower cut, according to Flynn. “We are proud of the exciting apparel that this world famous designer has created for us.” Look for the Black Label collection, which explores the newest fashion dimensions in style and attitude, while the new Red Label is fashion forward. Ted Baker is a famous English designer who creates modern contemporary fashions with a twist of Britain. His modern suit silhouette and sports coats come in soft Italian fabrics. COGNAC SHOES — The top colour “city shoe’ to wear with these blue suits and sports coats is cognac, although you will still find other versions in related shades of rich brown and, of course, black. Flynn likes two brands in particular — Ecco and Allen Edmonds. Customers come back for Ecco shoes because of their outstanding comfort, attributed to the company’s preference for top quality leather uppers and direct-injected sole construction. Flynn has glowing praise for the Allen Edmond shoe line. “We have carried some of the best shoes in the world but these are the best for selection and fit.” This master shoemaker manufactures out of Wisconsin. BRIGHT LONG AND SHORTSLEEVED SPORTS SHIRTS — Flynn picks Signum, a German sport shirt maker as a favourite. “They are our pride and joy, revered as the ultimate fashion shirt for quality, patterns and fabrications.” These and other top brands come in breathable bright cottons and linens that keep you cool and

look great in the hottest weather. LIPSON DRESS SHIRTS — Flynn’s favoured brand of dress shirts is Jack Lipson for quality and ease of care. Look for solid colours or patterns in stripes, mini-checks, neat prints and tattersall checks. Top styles for spring are medium spread collars and convertible cuffs. FASHIONABLE JEANS — Flynn likes German imports Brax and Gardeur, considered amongst the finest jean makers. Look for stretch fabrics, unique details and great fits. Colours include dark blue, khaki, suntan, black and gingers. Pair them with a summer sweater or a lightweight sport coat. These are the type of dressy jeans that you could wear on the weekend or to the office on casual Fridays. LAMBSKIN JACKETS — Watch for light, butter-soft lambskin jackets for spring from brands including Jez, Stefano and Andrew Marc. Flynn started in the menswear business with a partner in a store in the Senator Hotel before striking out on his own. Elwood Flynn Ltd.’s first location was on 23rd Street East, where the bus mall is now located. Locations followed in Midtown Plaza and Bayside (next to the former Bay building on Second Avenue). At one time the Flynn family owned four stores in Saskatoon including a shoe store, Town Cobbler, and a women’s store, run by Flynn’s wife, Joan. Son Barry has focused on cutting edge European style for men and women at his store, Ultimo Euromoda. Elwood Flynn Ltd. and Ultimo Euromoda are both located in the Avenue Building, at the corner of Third Avenue South and 21st Street.

KEEPING IT By Jeannie Armstrong In business for 106 years, Caswells Company Limited refuses to show its age. In fact, the venerable downtown men’s clothing store is at the top of its game. While many retailers are lamenting the sluggish economy, Caswells’ owner Gord Burgess remains enthusiastic. “Retail for us has stayed fairly strong. Our market has stayed very strong so we’re looking forward to a busy season.” What’s the secret to Caswells’ enviable success? “We keep changing our product lines a bit every season. We keep bringing in new product lines, new fashions. The stores that stay back and keep doing what they’ve been doing for years, perhaps their customers are getting a bit bored. The idea is to keep showing fresh product and stimulate your customers to get them into the store and want to wear new and fresh items,” says Burgess. “If you keep going back to the same suppliers then there is a tendency to show the same things. But if you’re always eyeing the market looking for what’s new, you’ll find fresh items to spark your customers’ interest.” Burgess explores the latest fashion trends by traveling to major buyers’ markets in Toronto, Vancouver, Las Vegas and New York. “Each of those markets shows different categories of clothing. New York tends to be dressier. The market in Las Vegas, which is more west-coast related, tends to be more casual. We’re always looking to find new products, new looks.” Among the season’s must-haves is a new sport coat, says Burgess. “For 2017, the silhouette is still trim to the body, but the construction of the jacket is softer and lighter. It’s not quite as structured, with softer shoulders. The fabrics are changing continuously. There

are some interesting textures and bold checks.” Look to lapels for one of the biggest updates in men’s suiting. “There are a lot of lapel changes this year. The peak lapel, as opposed to the traditional notch lapel, is very strong. The lapels are widening out just a touch. It’s something we’re seeing in both offthe-rack and in our custom suiting,” says Burgess. “The other thing that has changed a lot are the patterns in dress shirts. As opposed to just solids, stripes and checks, we’re seeing some more unique patterns and novelty prints in dress shirts. We have dress shirts with butterflies on them, bees on them. Our number one best-seller, which sold out quickly, had ladybugs. The shirt I have on right now has a print with little race cars. The new novelty prints in dress shirts are very strong. They aren’t just being worn as open collar sport shirts, they’re being worn with ties,” says Burgess. When pairing a tie with a print dress shirt, Burgess offers this advice. “It can be a geometric, as long as the geometric is a slightly different shape than the pattern in the shirt. It can be a tartan, it can be a paisley, even a polka dot. The pattern doesn’t really matter; the size of the pattern matters. You don’t put two geometrics together that are both the same size. You have to stagger the sizes.” The biggest growth area in Caswells’ business has been in custom suiting, says Burgess. “Since moving three years ago to our new stand-alone location on Second Avenue, our custom business has probably tripled. It’s a trend that’s happening across North America.” He attributes the surge in custom suiting to men’s increasing interest in fashion trends and the desire for individualized style.

FRESH

“Custom suiting isn’t just for the hard-to-fit customer. It’s for the man who wants to personalize his look. At one time, it was a segment of the market that was exclusive to business executives, but now custom suiting has gone mainstream,” says Burgess. “When you do custom, you can do different lapel shapes, button placements, jacket lengths. You can choose your fabric, your lining, buttons and style of top stitching. It’s not that you’re designing everything from scratch, you’re personalizing your garment. It gives the person exclusivity on his look.” Caswells’ go-to choice for custom attire is Coppleys, a leading Canadian menswear supplier that has remained at the pinnacle of fashion since 1883. “Caswells has had a strong relationship with Coppley for over 75 years,” says Burgess. Bob Cameron, western Canadian sales manager for Coppley, says that the custom-tailored experience is especially appealing to today’s millennials. “They come in looking for a particular silhouette. Then they get interested by the choices in the different fabrics, buttons, linings and stitching. Where it used to be important to come in and buy a specific brand, now they want their own thing. They’re coming in saying, ‘I don’t care about anybody else; I want this for me.’ Our custom business has gone way up because of that in the last three to five years.” Coppley is renowned for its outstanding selection of fabrics, as well as its meticulous workmanship. “Customers can select anything they want out of the hundreds of fabrics we provide. We work with the world’s leading fabric mills, such as Scotland’s Holland and Sherry, to obtain the most fashionable and desirable fabrics,” says Cameron. Not all custom suits are created

equal, he points out. “In this business, you need people who know what they’re doing. Herein lies the success of an experienced store like Caswells. It’s one thing to say, here are the fabrics and here are the things you can do, but it’s another thing to get the fit right,” says Cameron. “It’s not as simple as picking up a

measuring tape and writing down the numbers. It’s the interpretation of those numbers that’s going to make the garment right. “That’s where these guys come into their own. They’re absolutely excellent at it. So with all this choice, all this variety, it’s pretty hard for a guy to not find exactly what he’s looking for.”

For exceptional service and high quality menswear.

CAFA Awards celebrate Canadian fashion achievement By Hilary Klassen

N

ow in its fourth year, the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA) celebrated outstanding achievement and emerging talent in the Canadian fashion industry at a gala on April 7. CAFA president Vicky Milner says it’s an amazing night that brings the whole industry together in Toronto to celebrate each other. “When you look around the room you’ve got stylists, designers, photographers and models, the media is there, people who just love Canadian fashion are there, and there’s really great energy and a spirit of support.” Among some big-name Canadian talents in the global fashion industry recognized with special awards was Imran Amed, founder and CEO of The Business of Fashion. Originally from Calgary, Amed received the Hudson’s Bay Vanguard award. The award recognized his contribution to the global fashion industry as a writer, thinker and commentator. “He has one of the biggest and best globally regarded fashion platforms for news and awareness,” Milner said. Mo n t re a l- b o r n E rd e m Moralioglu received The International Canadian Designer of the Year Award for bringing attention to Canadian talent on the world stage. Erdem is based in London. The Fashion Impact Award honours philanthropic fashion designers or brands who are making a difference and bringing awareness to social causes. The award went to David Dickson who received a special tribute acknowledging his project for cancer awareness called, “Know your Genes.” “It was great to see some of these really big names in the global fashion community come back and be honoured and recognized in their home country by their peers, not just because they’re Canadian, but because they’re people who are making incredible advances and strides in the global industry,” Milner said. The Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent is a selfnominating award that seeks to identify the next new crop of great emerging talent in the

detail that really sets it apart, Milner says. Canada is getting a lot of great attention in the world right now, not just in fashion but in general, because of the way the world is going. “Sophie Trudeau has really helped on a global map, wearing all these great Canadian designers to all these events she goes to. And she’s great about advertising that,” Milner said. She predicts interest and curiosity about Canada will grow. The Canadian fashion industry is not without its challenges. “There’s always been the discussion about how our government doesn’t provide

country. CAFA receives entries from all over the country from people who have been designing for five years or less. The designer, Maram, was recognized as a true creative force in Canadian fashion in this category. The International Style Icon Award, a new category this year, recognizes someone whose unique personality and style has grabbed the attention of the global fashion industry. It went to 96-year-old Iris Ap-

fel who says ‘getting dressed is a creative act.’ Milner says Apfel remains very active in the industry, traveling, collaborating on projects and running a variety of campaigns. “Apfel is inspirational, stylish and fashionable but in a unique way, and a great advocate for style and fashion. She has a great attitude, great work ethic, and supports individuality and creativity and believing in yourself.” CAFA also celebrates in-

genuity in Canadian fashion. “There’s some amazing talent in our country and they are doing interesting things,” says Milner. Take Sid Neigum for example, who was nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year. He is set apart by the textures he uses and his architectural approach, seen in designs that reveal a fresh new take. Beaufille won the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award in recognition of their cool, sophisticated yet edgy designs. UNTTLD is another design line that uses amazing fabrics like crepe to produce very high end clothing with beautiful tailoring. This duo out of Montreal was last year’s emerging talent, known for sophisticated clothes but always with a twist, an edge and amazing

the same level of support for fashion. That’s always been a challenge, that identification of fashion as being part of art and culture and being provided the same opportunities as other artistic endeavours, so funding is always an issue.” CAFA helps overcome these challenges by garnering greater support for the Canadian fashion industry. “Open your eyes to what’s in this country, and wear these amazing clothes. In turn you’re supporting a small business, helping the economy to thrive, creating inspiration and opportunity for the next generation of designers.”

Style meets comfort in athleisure wear By Erin Paige Grey

A

thleisure wear has quickly become a staple of street fashion throughout the 2000s. Leggings made a comeback in the early 2000s as a women’s fashion basic. Yoga pants and their wearers stepped out of yoga studios and into day-today life. Jogger-style pants have dominated both fashion and fitness for the past few seasons. Designers have taken note and athleisure has morphed from stylish sweats into more sophisticated cuts. Dirk Bikkembergs, a Belgian designer, revolutionized professional wear when he made a fully structured suit out of jersey fabric – the same fabric used to make hoodies and sweats. Bikkembergs’ line is available at Ultimo Euromoda and owner Barry Flynn is ready to help guys suit up. Flynn says after Bikkembergs’ jersey suit debuted other designers follow suit (no pun intended). “It was a game changer for a lot of men.” Flynn has helped not only style men, but change their minds. He says many men wear clothes that are a size or two too big because it’s more comfortable; however, jersey suiting “is a way for men to wear something slimmer than they’d usually consider and still have the comfort level they’d get from wearing something much looser.” The proper fit in suiting is paramount and Ultimo Euromoda currently has three styles of suits constructed of jersey so men can choose the right size without sacrificing comfort. By August, Ultimo Euromoda will have seven or eight different jersey styles for the fall season, including suiting from Dutch designer, Kollekt, and German designer, Digel. Flynn is excited about the succession of changes he has seen in this emergent type of suiting construction and the rapid progression in design. He says that early samples of jersey trousers didn’t look properly tailored, but fashion houses have now perfected the design and no one but the wearer knows they are made of jersey. The lining of the suit jackets has also come a long way;

he says designers “are starting to make the adjustments with the proper interiors.” While many designers elect to line their suit jackets with daring colours and patterns, Digel has thoughtfully lined their jersey suit jackets with an athletic mesh, similar to the type of fabric basketball shorts are made from, to allow for optimal stretch and breathability. While the jersey suits provide the utmost in comfort, no detail has been forgotten or sacrificed. From piping to elbow patches and branded buttons, each piece is impeccably styled. Canadian designer, Vincent D’Amérique, is a new line exclusive to Ultimo Euromoda for Saskatchewan. The jackets Flynn has in store are created to make fashion easy and affordable. Details like the colourful lining in the outer breast jacket pocket that the wearer can pull up and out of the pocket to form a faux pocket square create an effortless accessory. If you’re looking to step out for the night, Vincent D’Amérique also makes a hybrid tuxedo jacket in jersey that Flynn says “is the kind of suit James Bond would wear.” But if your lifestyle is more cubicle than Connery, a jersey suit will provide ultimate comfort during the day and won’t crease, so you still look polished to go out for drinks or a date straight from work. But jersey styles aren’t just for men; designers haven’t forgotten that ladies value comfort just as much as the gentlemen. Jersey has become a favourite fabric choice in women’s collections with jersey blazers, skirts and denim. Ultimo Euromoda has jersey selections for women as well. Any piece of clothing constructed out of jersey fabric is a great choice for travel. “It looks great when you get off the plane,” says Flynn. Plus, it won’t wrinkle in your suitcase. What’s even more impressive is that some of the suiting pieces in jersey available at Ultimo Euromoda are machine washable. Whether you’re looking for a suit for work or a special occasion, suiting created out of jersey is a practical and sartorial solution. Visit Ultimo Euromoda at 204 Third Avenue South for your perfect fit.

Love the skin you’re in! With summer just around the corner, it’s time to get ready for more revealing fashions and swimwear. Discover the difference that body sugaring can make at R3 Sugar Spa. PHOTO: GeTTy

R3 Sugar Spa elevates the art of body sugaring By Jeannie Armstrong

I

f you thought that frequent shaving or waxing were the only options for removing unwanted body hair, R3 Sugar Spa wants to open your eyes to the advantages of body sugaring. The Saskatoon salon is the Canadian prairies’ authorized distributor and educator for Alexandria Professional® (AP) body sugaring products. Salon co-owner Karen Kobussen says that Alexandria Professional is the global pioneer of professional body sugaring. The company’s innovative molecular sugaring process and products are patented and trademarked, and embraced by beauty professionals around the world. Company founder Lina Kennedy not only created a line of superior professional grade sugaring products, AP has developed an acclaimed training program to educate practitioners in the art of advanced body sugaring. Karen first discovered sugaring over a decade ago while working in Regina. “I have an extreme issue with ingrown hair development and shaving always left my skin raw and irritated. A friend recommended I try sugaring and called her practitioner. It was an Alexandria Professional salon. I was hooked after the first treatment.” Upon moving back to Saskatoon, she was referred to Lori Pressacco, who has been an AP educator since 2006. She is the only certified Executive Educator with Alexandria Professional in Saskatchewan. “I was a regular client of Lori’s for years. In the meantime, my daughter Brienne moved back to Saskatoon from Calgary and was looking to establish herself in a career. She decided to train with Lori and learn the art of sugar-

ing. Over the past four years, Brienne has really perfected her skills as a practitioner and is now a certified AP educator,” says Karen. In 2013, the three women joined forces to open R3 Sugar Salon and Spa, located at #3 – 630 Second Avenue North, just north of Earl’s Restaurant. “We started the salon as a full-service hair salon and spa. But we have come to the realization that because sugaring is such a fantastic option to other methods of hair removal, it’s the aspect of the business that we really needed to expand. We want to elevate the sugaring profession in Saskatchewan,” says Karen. Why sugar? “Sugaring is eco-friendly. Our product is allnatural, safe and skin-friendly. The ingredients are sugar, water and lemon juice, so it’s non-toxic, vegan and even edible,” says Brienne. In comparison, wax hair removal products are formulated from petroleum- and chemicalbased resins which stick to the skin’s surface. Hair is removed by yanking the hair away against the natural direction of growth, a process which can be quite painful. With AP’s sugaring method, hair is removed in the natural direction of the hair growth. “The sugar paste is warmed just enough to be pliable. When it’s applied, it quickly adjusts to the temperature of your skin. There’s no risk of burning sensitive skin areas,” says Karen. After the sugar paste has been applied it seeps into the hair follicles, lubricating the hair root for easier extraction. The result is a more comfortable hair removal experience, ideal for all hair colours, textures and skin types. “Alexandria has five different

textures of sugar paste, allowing us to meet each client’s individual needs. Knowing about the different hair and skin types and which sugaring product will work the best is an important part of our training,” says Brienne. Each sugaring treatment at R3 includes before and after skin care, using AP’s Full Circle skin conditioners. “Sugaring is so gentle on the skin that it’s even an option for women with diabetes. We have parents with girls in dance, gymnastics, swimming and cheer squad who are bringing their kids in for sugaring. The girls leave here so happy!” says Brienne. More men are also discovering sugaring. “Our male clientele has grown quite a bit. We’re getting the word out and men are becoming more aware of the advantages of sugaring,” says Brienne. R3 Sugar Spa offers a full menu of services, including facial sugaring, (brow, lip to full face); body sugaring including arms, legs, chest and back; and intimate areas including the bikini line. “After your first body sugaring treatment, when hair grows back, it’s softer and sparser. By about the third treatment, hair regrowth is greatly diminished,” says Brienne. “Depending on the individual, clients usually schedule return visits every three to four weeks,” says Karen. When scheduling a treatment, Brienne advises that optimum hair length is about an eighth of an inch. “We try to educate all of our new clients to come to us five to seven days after shaving. I can do underarms probably about three days after shaving,” says Brienne.

Classes are held on Sundays, meaning beauty professionals don’t have to take time off work to enhance their skills. “We have two full days of inclass training, with our educators Lori and Brienne. At the end of the two-day training sessions, all the participants leave here excited and motivated to bring sugaring to their clients,” says Karen. “Classes are a maximum of six people. BLue hues make a comeBack this spring By Erin Paige Grey

F

or Spring and Summer 2017, neutral makeup with fun splashes of colour is on trend, according to Paulette Schumacher, owner of Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in Scotia Centre. For spring, makeup is denim inspired with neutral eyes and pops of baby blue. There’s no need to be intimidated – this isn’t blue eyeshadow from decades past. To keep your look modern and on trend, use a soft brown eyeshadow in the crease of your eye and a subtle wash of blue across the lid. For a more youthful take on denim blues, pack blue eyeshadow on your waterline and lower lash line. Merle Norman Cosmetics has made staying current easy by combining four beautiful eyeshadows, including their denim-inspired blue, into their Blue Belle Eyecolor Quad. If you prefer to keep your eyes neutral, try a colourful lipstick like Merle Norman’s Creamy Lipcolor in the vibrant shade Pink About It. While spring is about bringing colour to your features, summer 2017’s trend is all about gorgeous sun-kissed skin and Merle Norman offers several solutions to help you

perfect your bronzed goddess glow. The latest foundation from Merle Norman, Timeless Illuminating Makeup, leaves your complexion luminous while being clinically proven to help restore skin tone, smooth the appearance of fine lines and combat aging. Plus, it contains SPF 30 to protect your skin from the sun’s rays in the summer months. If you need even more glow or want to try another hot beauty trend — highlighting — Liquid Shimmer comes in two different colours: a cool tone and a warm tone. Liquid Shimmer’s versatility makes it a must-have. Apply it as a highlighter on the highest part of your cheekbones and on your brow bone or mix it into your foundation or body lotion for an all-over glow. Me r l e No r m a n’s s u m mer collection was designed for travel and convenience. Schumacher explains that “the multi-purpose compact contains everything you need for summer with four eye colours in neutrals, a sunset pink cheek colour, and a tan bronzing powder.” Plus, for this season only, Merle Norman Lip Duets “feature complimentary Age Defying Lipcolor and Lip Polish in one portable package.”

With three beautiful shades – lilac rose, neutral rose or golden coral – there’s a colour for everyone, but they’re only in store for a limited time. Now through May 15, Merle Norman is offering a gift with purchase when you buy two or more cosmetics products. The products included in the gift are this summer’s beauty favourites. Facial cleansing wipes are fantastic for a quick cleanse. Whether you put them in your beach bag, gym bag or weekend bag, they are a convenient way to care for your skin. The gift also includes a beautiful Liquid Blush and a Liquid Lipcolor that dries down to a matte finish and is long lasting. The Ultra Light Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is a summer necessity, and all four pieces are packaged in a waterresistant re-usable tote bag. Paulette Schumacher and her staff at Merle Norman in Scotia Centre would love to help you perfect your spring and summer looks with a free makeup lesson. Plus, they offer a full-service spa including all esthetics and massage therapy with a Registered Massage Therapist. For all things beauty this spring, Merle Norman has the products and services you need.

CLASSIC CHOICES A few classic pieces in solid colours will take you a long way. Mix and match, layering a duster dress over your favourite skirt or a T-shirt and jeans. MERLE NORMAN COSMETIC STUDIO With spring make-up being influenced by the denim fashion trend, Merle Norman Studio owner Paulette Schumacher embraces the new “pink about it look.” The eyes are highlighted in neutral tones from the ‘Status Glow’ shadow palette and further dramatized with ‘Blackout’ eyeliner. She brought out her eyes by wearing ‘MN lengthening false eyelashes’. Paulette also makes sure she darkens the brows to accent the eye area even more. Paulette’s cheeks and jawline were defined with MN’s ‘Contour and Highlight Duo’ compact. Her cheek colour and bronzing powder ‘Make You Blush’ are in the same compact for ease of use. To finish the look, Paulette chose the ‘Pink About It” Lipcolor from Merle Norman’s spring colour collection. TIE ONE ON

For those summer weddings and other special occasions when you want to look good without being too dressed up, add a tie to your casual outfit. You can wear it tied tight with your buttoned-up shirt or hanging loose with an opennecked shirt. – casweLLs: the store for men

TRY TONE-ON-TONE If you can only buy two things this season, do one outfit completely monotone in ivory, layering textures and tones. Select a second outfit or dress in a multi-coloured print and you will be set for the season. – kLassique designs

TIMELESS ELEGANCE

2017

Designer embraces the slow clothing movement By Hilary Klassen

I

magine clothing as fresh as a summer morning, that pulls in the blue of the sky and demonstrates the beauty of simplicity. As the guest designer featured in this year’s StarPhoenix Fashion Road Show, Kathleen O’Grady brings a unique and refreshing approach to fashion design. O’Grady learned to love fashion as a girl watching her mother make beautiful clothing on a farm near Allan, Saskatchewan. From that early beginning grew a lifelong passion which took O’Grady to design school and then to some far-flung locations for inspiration. “My travels have given me an appreciation for clothing traditions from around the world,” she says. “I lived in Greece for a year and in Japan for two years during the 1980s, and have traveled a number of times to Southeast Asia, India and Africa.” He r t rav e l s a l s o g av e O’Grady an appreciation for the slow clothing movement which places great importance on quality and how clothes are made. It’s not about trends or disposable clothing. She learned about slow fabric and slow processes in Japan and India and those lessons have informed her clothing lines. “When you learn about clothing you learn about a culture and what that culture values.” Her grady bleu® fashion line was inspired by long and rich traditions of fabric dying using the indigo plant. “Blue, with its roots in indigo, dates back centuries and represents for me antiquity, history and a certain quality of endurance,” O’Grady says. While the line features blue, she uses a broader colour palette of browns, whites, beiges, blacks and greys as well. “I create small exclusive collections and often integrate specialty fabrics made by artisans from around the world.” O’Grady prefers woven fabrics of linen, cotton, wool and silk. Naturally dyed scarves are available for accessorizing. New styles in 2017 include a couple of contemporary offerings. One is a button-down duster which is a long-sleeved linen dress that can be worn different ways – as a coat, layered over jeans, with a T-shirt underneath and so on. Another is a 1940s-style shawl-collar dropped shoulder dress with pockets, but no buttons or zippers. Both of these are made with linen and are relatively ‘seasonless.’ “My goal is to make beautiful, wearable clothing for women who appreciate quality and authentic simplicity in their dress. My designs don’t follow trends. They are classic and timeless as well as fun, and I think that is what people love about them,” O’Grady says. Her fashions are not age-specific either, but designed to appeal to women of all ages. She makes all her own patterns. Her designs are contemporary but encompass old world cultures. O’Grady believes that with globalization and mass production, we have lost any sense of a relationship with our clothes. “We have lost the knowledge and appreciation of good fabrics and quality design. I would like people to understand the origins of their clothing and have clothing they love and

that serves them well over many years.” She compares mass-produced clothing to buying a loaf of bread. You could either buy mass-made Wonder-style bread or you could spend better money on an artisan loaf of bread. “I know which one I’m buying. It’s the process. I care about how that was made.” O’Grady is planning a trip back to India to establish relationships with artisans in rural villages and cottage craft industries who practice age-old textile traditions. She says proper indigo dying is a skill that takes a while to master. “I hope to employ their skills in producing my products while giving them increased opportunities for livelihood.” Other skills, such as the technical skills involved in creating a pattern and then bringing a garment into being, are being lost, she adds. “It’s more than drawing a nice picture. You actually have to make that garment.” O’Grady’s clothing is available online at gradybleu.com. She does regular pop-up shows and open house studio sales events. Her next pop-up event is on May 27 and 28 at the venue called Storefront at 325 – 21 Street West. She will also be at BAZAART in Regina on June 17.

grady bleu® BY KATHLEEN O’GRADY Elegant simplicity distinguishes this coveted spring look from grady bleu® by Kathleen O’Grady. She model Kiara East wears the grady bleu® empirewaist duster dress in black, fashioned from 100 per cent linen. The dress makes a statement as a stand-alone piece or layered over a white linen slipdress. The duster’s unique design includes an empire waist and a flared skirt, giving it nice shape along with a looser fit. The side pockets are every woman’s favourite. The 100 per cent silk scarf, naturally dyed with indigo leaves, adds a great pop of colour.
