T
he fashion runway is one of the biggest influences upon home décor trends. The colours, textures and textiles that are on trend in this season’s clothing collections are making their way into our homes at a faster pace than ever before. Leading that trend here in Canada is legendary fashion designer Simon Chang. His prowess as a designer of outstanding women’s fashion is abundantly evident in the more than 300 collections he’s created since establishing Simon Chang Concepts in 1983. In 2010, Simon Chang expanded his style influence by partnering with Home Hardware’s Beauti-Tone division to create the

It’s not about painting your wall, it’s about dressing your room,” said Simon Chang, in a recent phone interview from his headquarters in Montreal. “How do you update the look of your room? Change the paint. Change the accessories.” Chang says, “All of these colours on our colour card are a reflection of what’s current in fashion and our culture. green. “Green Peace is a soothing balancing colour with strong energy. When used in a room, people entering develop a sense of ease and peace,” says Bev Bell, Creative Director of Beauti-Tone’s Paint and Home Products Division. “In fashion, we’re wearing camouflage type colours. I thought it was very exciting to also bring these colours into our homes,” says Chang.
“At this moment in time, we need peace. We need to connect. We need to chill. Look at how much fear we’re living in right at this moment.” Bell adds, “Meaningful colour evolves from what is happening in our lives and in the lives around us. Right now, whether it is within our own walls or in the bigger world, many of us are craving simple calm.” The nature-inspired green tone is extremely versatile. It can be used throughout the home as a grounding and elegant neutral, or to make a confident statement on an accent wall. As with his ready-to-wear collections, Chang delights in composing delicious names for his colour card selections: You Look Mauve-loss (soft violet), Cocoa Chanel (taupe), Yellow Polka Dot Bikini (gold) and Aqua Culture (blue), just to name a few. When it comes to clothing, we’re a lot more fashion forward, a lot more daring. We don’t have to match everything. We can bring different patterns together – stripes, checks. His interest in home décor extends beyond creating collections of paint colours. I'm becoming a lot more involved in the design of home products, including cushions, bedding and draperies," says Chang. “My cushions are a fabulous accessory for your sofa or your bed… like adding a
statement necklace or belt to punctuate the outfit you’re wearing,” says Chang. “My bedding is like fashion on your bed. I work so much with fabric, I can translate the fabrication into homes. I’ll see a beautiful texture on a jacket and think, ‘That could work for something else – a great chair
perhaps.’ Or I might find a paisley, and then think of dressing the bed that way. "Vice-versa, some of the fabrics that work in home décor are also great for fashion. There are terrific leather looks, with distressed stitching and grommet accents. It’s kind of a cross-over. I love the freedom that we have today.” The days of formal living, and the strict rules that once dictated home interiors, are over, declares Chang. “We’re living more casually these days. I love this change. There used to be a formal living room, a formal dining room. It was always very proper. Today, we need rooms that are multi-purpose, multi-functional. "In our parents' day, home décor was so serious. Change meant doing a total makeover on the entire room. Now we can

be constantly expressing ourselves, bringing in different things for different seasons. We can recycle a lot of our stuff. You might find some old chairs up in the attic; make each one a different colour. It’s only paint!” His own home is an ever-changing canvas of creative expression, says Chang. “People will come over and say, ‘Simon, I love that cushion on your sofa.’ I’ll tell them, I just put a fashion belt on it, or sewed on some unique buttons or trim. That’s what I do for changes. s summer turns up the heat and simultaneously turns up the green, we are keen to turn up the luxury outdoors as well. No golden summer moment will pass us by! Whether it’s alfresco dining, basking in the afternoon sun or enjoying fireside chats with friends, we want luxurious outdoor spaces to relax in. It’s about creating a balance between garden-scaping and hardscaping, Robinson says. For those wanting less maintenance in
the back yard or in the rooftop court yard, a few containers versus multiple beds may be the solution. If you prefer to enjoy summer in Saskatchewan and are doing a staycation, investing in backyard comfort makes sense. “People spend a lot of time in their back yards and they want value, quality and the luxury of the style,” says Robinson. A full design scope would include seven major design components: floor plans; mechanical; electrical; technology; architecture; the building shell and exterior finishes; interior design; and landscaping. On a commercial or institutional project, a team of engineers and architects would complete this design scope. However, in the residential industry, the budgets do not typically allow for a full services design team. That being said, it is still critical to examine, consider and elaborate on how these components will be approached and how they will work together. In the simplest sense, each contractor can comment on his or her recommendations for these components. But as the owner, you will need to understand how to evaluate the function that they are proposing versus the resulting cost. More importantly, you need to consider how their recommendations will impact the other six design components. Some examples of planning and cross impacts include: • Planning for the location of the main mechanical duct chase to be out of the main living space so that it doesn’t impact ceiling heights. In order to do this, the floor joists and beams for the house will have to be adjusted so that they fall in areas where they conceal and hide the ductwork. • Developing a furniture plan before an electrical plan is complete so that you can properly locate floor outlets for lamps, TVs and other things that require electricity. • The type of light control you need depends on the size and exposure of the windows you have – you may want to plan for a feature like automated blinds. Wanting automated blinds, lighting or other features in the house will determine the wiring that needs to be in the walls and the equipment to support it. • The location of heat registers may interfere with potential area rug sizes and locations as well as how your drapes hang as every time the furnace turns on, they will billow. • When it comes to landscaping, the location of the door to the back yard may not accommodate the pet you have. Strategically locating it so it is in the fenced area may be beneficial. When it comes to design, take the time to work through as many details as possible. Small tweaks at this stage of the project will offer long lasting enjoyment through the life of your home.

Dream has organized its second Parade of Homes in the northeast neighbourhood of Brighton. The nine show homes are now open for viewing, on the 300-block of Dagnone Crescent.

ig things are coming for the new neighbourhood of Brighton. Since it officially opened to the public two years ago, about 600 people have moved in, and it’s feeling more and more like a lived-in, developed space every day. “When we kicked off the first Parade of Homes two years ago, there were 10 houses,” said Brad Zurevinski, Dream’s general manager of land. “It’s definitely the fastest growing in the city by far for a new neighbourhood in this stage of development. It’s leaps and bounds ahead of most neighbourhoods of the same age or stage of development.” The community’s second Parade of Homes kicked off on June 16 with a festival that included bouncy castles, entertainment and a barbecue lunch. Hundreds of people turned out for the event. A total of nine homes are featured in the Brighton Parade. Builders and homeowners can choose from five styles in Brighton: Arts and Crafts, Prairie, Tudor, Colonial, and Craftsman. Right next to the long-established neighbourhoods of Arbor Creek and Willowgrove at College Drive and McOrmand Road, Brighton feels like it’s been around a long time.
“We wanted to make it feel like an established community as soon as possible,” Zurevinski said. Specifically, he said they’re trying to avoid the annoyances that sometimes come with living in a new neighbourhood, like muddy streets and rocks getting kicked into your yard. Beautiful landscaping and welcoming parks are some of the things that drive people to buy in established neighbourhoods, and Brighton has those right off the bat. Front yard landscaping and driveways come with the purchase of a home. “It takes away the negative connotations of a new neighbourhood,” Zurevinski said. The parks are a big priority for Brighton – once it’s fully developed, it will have more ponds and parks than any other community per capita. The play structures are created for all ages, like Bearpaw Park, with faux tree canopies, logs, and life-sized bears. Zurevinski said people are driving from Willowgrove or Evergreen to use these parks. “I live in Willowgrove, and we drive to the parks in Brighton, and they’re quite busy,” he said. “The play structures themselves are so much more substantial; there’s a lot more to do for different age ranges of kids…. It makes a really big difference.” The parks are enjoyable for all ages, too; if you don’t want to play on the structures, you can enjoy the trails.
This year’s Brighton Parade of Homes features some show homes on a street that backs onto one of the legendary parks. The parks aren’t the only draw. Wilson’s Lifestyle Centre moved to its bigger, flashier building last year, and has been drawing people from all over the city to try its zip line and gocart tracks. The neighbourhood’s new Landmark movie theatre opened on June 1. The Brighton Village Centre and more retail will be under construction later this year, and the McOrmond interchange is slated to be finished in October, making transportation to and from the neighbourhood easier. The Phase 3 Parade of Homes is now underway. The houses are open for the public to check out Monday to Thursday 5 to 9 p.m., and on weekends and holidays 12 to 5 p.m.

lack might seem like a scary choice for the walls in your home. Aren’t dark colours just depressing and overwhelming? Not necessarily. In fact, according to Atmosphere Interior Design’s Curtis Elmy, black is having a bit of a design moment. “I think black right now is becoming popular in a lot of light fixtures and plumbing. A lot of people are responding to the masculinity of it and the boldness of how it looks in a very clean and contemporary space,” says Elmy. Elmy recalls doing their very first Hospital Home Lottery grand prize show home in 2010 and using a black feature wall. “I remember at the time it was bold in the sense that I don’t think Saskatoon had seen anything like that before.” Though still not a common colour to adorn walls in Saskatoon, Atmosphere Design has used black in some dramatic design applications. It can highlight a piece of art that is light in colour. With a gold frame around the art, it becomes an elegant focal point. “It can add a lot of depth. Another reason we often do it is to cozy up spaces. Black is a really good neutral. So you’re always going to find hits of black in anyone’s house,” says Elmy. If you’re afraid of turning your den into a cave using black, Elmy says it’s important to layer lots of textures in the room. around the room. As well as textures, Elmy says to look for ways to minimize the visible black wall, such as shelving or art. Artwork can be a great way to keep the black wall from becoming overwhelming. Lighting is another consideration. Black naturally absorbs a lot of light – even in a room you think has tons of it. “I think if you are going to be brave and take that black step, I think you have to make sure you investigate all of your lighting avenues,” says Elmy. In fact, he suggests it’s better to start with more light than you think you’ll need and then dial it back with dimmer switches. Think of overhead lighting, floor lamps, and table lamps if you need to add more light to a room. While not usually a fan of a single feature wall, Elmy makes an exception for black. “It surprisingly does suck a lot of light out of things and that’s why focusing it on one wall might be best.” Another suggestion would be to use it on the ceiling. “If you start by painting your ceiling black and add a nice white crown moulding and other elements in the room, it can actually raise the ceiling a little bit,” Elmy says. Find inspiration for dabbling in black by looking at design magazines or websites and examining what appeals to you. “The internet is a great way to get that initial jumping off point. If you find a room that speaks to you in a dramatic way, then you have to pick it apart and find the things that you don’t love as much and, we always say, take someone else’s inspiration and interpret it a different way,” explains Elmy. Instead of a solid black wall, try a wallpaper with two shades of black to catch the light in a different way. Or maybe look at that ceiling again. Black isn’t the only moody hue. “Dark blue is amazing,” says Elmy. “It’s a very liveable colour. We never say no to

blue.” Elmy and partner Trevor Ciona created a blue room for a study in the 2016 Hospital Home Lottery grand prize home. The room featured dark blue cabinetry, blue grasscloth on the walls, accessorized by blue art and blue drapery. Even the baseboards were painted blue. The layering of different textures allowed the room to feel and look bigger than it actually was once finished. “It made the room feel twice as big,” says Elmy. Exploring other deep shades like black might be a bold step, but it could yield some surprising and utterly unique results. You’ll have a room with a personality of its own – whether contemporary and chic or traditional and cozy. “Having a feature like that is brave,” Elmy says, “but it does pay off.”

lmost 10 years ago, Larry Westby founded Saskatoon Custom Garage Interiors after renovating his own garage and being repeatedly asked by his friends and neighbours, “Where can I get that done?” Westby owns Saskatoon Custom Garage Interiors with his wife Elaine and their business partner Cliff Thiemann. The garage design and flooring company focuses on reclaiming residential garages as all-purpose recreational spaces for families to relax and enjoy. “We primarily work with double and triple car garages. ot only are you allowed to mix woods in your home, Mike Watkins with Kalawood Industries encourages it. “I definitely like seeing the different species of woods together – though not too many, because you don’t want to confuse things.” Kalawood’s woodworkers specialize in luxury projects, and while Watkins insists he’s not a designer, he’s done enough work in stylish homes for the concepts to rub off on him. Most often, he said you’ll see contrasting colours in the wood between the cabinets and the flooring. White oak and walnut are a common combo. “People are taking more risks now with design and want to step outside the box a little bit, opposed to five years ago when you saw just maple going in a house,” Watkins said. When pairing woods, you want to take into account both the grains and finishes. You can have contrasting woods, but you should try to stay within the same colour family, and opt for similar types of grain. Staining can also be a good way to bring different species together; you might not see the different colours of the woods, but the grains will still stand out, creating a variety of textures. Grey stains are especially popular right now, Watkins said. Staircases are another place you’ll see multiple grains, with Watkins’ clients sometimes choosing a smoother grain for the banister. Beyond mixing different woods, another trend Watkins has seen is mixing wood with steel and glass, especially when it comes to feature staircases. If anyone in the city knows a thing or two about staircases, it’s Kalawood. Watkins said most of their clients are in the Greenbryre area and are willing to pay a pretty penny for feature staircases in their homes. For the staircases, Kalawood pulls the whole project together in-house, working with the designer, engineers, and trades from start to finish. “Stairs are a lot to think about,” Watkins

said. “If you get them in the early stages of the build, you can avoid a lot of those extra costs. Because I can do this all in house in one shot, I can get the prices down…. When you compare our fully involved process of staircases versus buying just the stairs and just the glass, it costs a little less from us but you get a nicer finished product.” Watkins has been in the woodworking industry for 12 years; he got his start building staircases in the Okanagan. His business partner Christopher Krahn also has over a decade of experience, and Neil Krahn’s experience goes back even further. Watkins said he kind of fell into woodworking, but soon he was hooked. “I became enthralled with it. It’s enjoyable; it’s tricky; there’s a lot of problem solving that has to happen. Wood is a tricky product to work with; it moves with the weather, with the climate. It swells and shrinks. There are joining techniques you learn over the years. All those things become more and more exciting as you go, and I’m still finding these new techniques.” He said he also loves seeing the finished
product, and the look on people’s faces when they see it installed. One of his favourite projects they’ve worked on recently was a house done entirely in a product called medieval walnut. “We did the entire house – large, curved staircases, ceiling beams, trim,” Watkins said. “It was a pretty neat project to be a part of, and it’s a really great product that will stand the test of time.” The medieval walnut has natural mineral streaks due to the nutrients it pulls from the soil where it grows in South America.
“When we cut into it, it opens up pockets of dark crystals and adds a natural distressing look to that product.” The beautiful grain comes with trade-offs, though: “Those formations in the wood do a number on our blades when we work on them; when our hardwood saw blade hits those crystals, it rips up teeth on the blades.” If you want to see the product with your own eyes, you only have to make a trip to the Kalawood headquarters – they did their whole showroom in it. ith the recent resurgence of Venetian plaster in home design, we’re being treated to some gorgeous new wall finishes. Take a dramatic feature wall in the 2018 Kinsmen Home Lottery grand prize show home, for example. Master plasterer Scott Montgomery of Drywall by Design suggested a matte black finish for this textured wall behind the bar downstairs. Located in the heart of Saskatoon, the modern home makes a bold statement. “The whole house is very mono-chromatic. The bathrooms are silvery grey and down in the basement there’s a lot of white, so I went for extreme contrast in that matte black,” says Montgomery. A main floor powder room was also treated to a rich Venetian plaster finish. Montgomery has been refining Venetian plaster techniques for about a year and was ready to jump into the Kinsmen Home Lottery project. “It seems to have generated quite a bit of interest. People are excited about it!” he says. While popular in places like Europe and Miami, Venetian plaster is just beginning to break into the Saskatchewan market. According to a recent issue of Architectural Digest, Venetian plaster is increasingly being used in homes of style. It offers homeowners an alternative to stone, marble, tile or wallpaper as feature wall material. Montgomery has been doing decorative drywall – coffered ceilings, crown moldings, wainscoting and specialty trims – and getting into Venetian plaster was a natural progression for him. He is active in online contractor forums and more recently on Instagram where there is a large contractor community, and he has garnered a large following of over 25,000. Venetian plaster is made from Italian limestone. Montgomery
has been getting training from a Regina company called Venilux. He says people have been flying in from New York, Toronto and Vancouver for the training. “Last year, Venilux started distributing lime products made by BeriCalce in Italy and began training people to build a network of “master partners” across Canada and the U.S. Last summer, they invited me to come for one of their training sessions and I fell in love with it.” Venetian plaster complements the custom work he’s been doing and provides an opportunity to be creative. “I discovered a creative side I didn’t know I had,” he says. The ancient art hasn’t changed much in hundreds of years, but he says traditional recipes are always being improved, and different manufacturers have their own recipes. “The material I used in the powder room is some of the finest you can get, very pure fine paste, that allows me to get the polished high gloss finish.” The lime concrete Montgomery used in a recent project forms a direct contrast, employing a different technique. “With the vast selection of lime products and different styles of finishing it’s almost a combination of regular plaster finishing, painting, and sculpting. It’s an art,” he says. He has tapped into a growing love of natural products in design. The waxes and dyes are all natural, there’s almost nothing synthetic about it, he says. “I really like using this natural material. It’s quite fun to work with. It’s more about the texture. It’s just amazing to feel and it’s totally different than any painted wall or tile.” Montgomery has stayed away from synthetics but knows of someone who uses acrylic finishes for a more modern look. Ancient finishes are associated with the marmorino family of plasters. A very fine, pure and white limestone is processed down to a paste. “It takes upwards of a year to process it and get it to that paste and then they add marble dust to it,” says Montgomery. According to Architectural Digest, there’s a growing focus on blurring the architectural line between indoors and out. “And lime plaster is quite literally the earth on your walls.” Montgomery will keep training in Venetian plaster which he says has to be

he countdown has begun to one of the most highly anticipated events in Saskatoon’s housing market: the launch of the 2018 Parade of Homes, presented by the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association (SRHBA). This year’s SRHBA Parade of Homes opens on Tuesday, August 7 and extends for six weeks, closing on September 16. In neighbourhoods in and around Saskatoon, 17 participating professional home builders are hard at work, constructing the 29 amazing show homes that will be showcased at this year’s annual Parade of Homes. The number of builders and featured homes breaks the record participation achieved during last year’s Parade of Homes, says Chris Guérette, CEO of the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association. “Last year, we also had record numbers in foot traffic as well. No other parade tracks the foot traffic to the same degree that we did. We have people in all of the parade homes who are manually tracking and reporting that data. It’s useful data for those participating builders as well as for our Association, to gauge the interest in the event,” says Guérette. “Every year, we beat a record and think we won’t be able to top those numbers – and then we do! We’re very happy to see that level of participation.” With so many builders participating, the variety along the parade route will be outstanding, ranging from single family homes, townhomes and apartment-style multi-units, at a variety of price points. “It’s always interesting to see the different trends in home design and to explore the

different areas of the city along the parade route,” says Guérette. “There will be a lot to see for those looking to get inspired!” The 2018 Parade of Homes will include stops in Saskatoon’s new neighbourhoods of Brighton, Rosewood, The Meadows, Stonebridge, Evergreen, Aspen Ridge and Kensington as well as the heritage neighbourhood of Montgomery Place. P
aul Koopman might be a Saskatoon-born architect but his influences and scope are as big as the vast landscape that surrounds us. Koopman says his approach to design was hatched when he attended the Architecture program at Ontario’s Waterloo University. “Waterloo was a major influence. When I first arrived there in the 1990s, it was part of the Environmental Studies faculty rather than Engineering so there was definitely an environmental bent to the college at that time.” After graduating in 2003 with a Masters of Architecture (M.Arch), Koopman
worked at Karakusevic Carson Architects in London, England (2003–2005) then with architect Keith Henry at Friggstad Downing Henry Architects (2006–2011) in Saskatoon. In 2011, Koopman started his own practice, Koopman Architecture Inc. It’s situated above The Vinyl Exchange on Second Avenue North where Koopman regularly shops for vinyl editions of late 1970s gems like Genesis’ Trick of the Tale and Elvis Costello’s My Aim is True. The progressive designer has left his mark on various projects in Saskatoon and around the province but Koopman says he’s not a lone wolf. The Koopman team also includes
Stephanie Campbell, another Waterloo architecture graduate, and Ashley Graf, an architectural technologist who trained at Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Moose Jaw. “Architecture is the ultimate team project because you’re working with so many people. It’s not like we’re a single painter in a studio that conceives the artwork then produces it.” Koopman says that they work with clients on the conceptual part then with builders on the construction; they’re always working with other people along the way. “I think of architecture more like filmmaking because it’s collaborative and it’s definitely more like an economic engine,” he says. “You look at the credits at the end of the suMMer 2018

film and it’s hundreds of people. Architecture is like that since it’s not completely a free art like painting and sculpture.” Koopman’s design philosophy is comprised of three components: health, dignity and delight. “Health is really important to me. I want to create healthy spaces for people to be in and to work in a healthy way. Healthy buildings are ones that are not only energy efficient and that use resources wisely but that are also well built and durable. But it’s also about the sense of well-being that you feel in a room,” he says.

Good architecture is also about dignity. “We want to work in a way that’s respectful because we’re so collaborative. But then we also want to create spaces that are dignified for people, regardless of their age, to occupy,” says Koopman. “You’re trying to think about what people need, how people live, how we all need a bit of privacy but we also have a public component to our lives. So how can we create spaces for people so we can live well?” Architecture is all about how we can create delightful buildings with cultural significance. “I think the former Bay
building (now 2nd Avenue Lofts) where I live is a delightful building. You walk in the corridors — they’re really wide and tall corridors — and you come home and you just relax.” Koopman’s work is deeply influenced by his love of art. “I love working with colour in architecture.” This is evident in two of his design projects: The Edge residential housing project on the 200 block Avenue D South in Riversdale and the Two Twenty Eight façade/entrance renovation on the 200 block of 20th Street West. “Colour is from the gut. I think people react to the colour in a painting – I know I do – and if they like the colour in the painting, they like the painting,” Koopman says. “Even if I don’t yet fully see the content at first in the painting, I still respond to it. When I first saw Van Gogh’s work, I was just rocked.” Paul Koopman has one over-arching career philosophy: “Do your best all the time.” He employs that philosophy on a diverse range of projects. “Our practice is a bit different because we do the architecture but we also create these public art projects,” says Koopman who also plays ukulele and harmonicas in The Musical Powers, a local folk band.

One key commission, “Prairie Wind,” is a copse of colourful, illuminated poles at River Landing. It was created in 2006 to celebrate Saskatoon’s 100th anniversary as an amalgamated city. “Five Corners,” five origami-esque slitted panels, was installed in 2008 at Broadway and 12th Street. Both
installations are a collaboration with Jyhling Lee of Toronto’s Figureground Studio. Koopman says that revered Saskatchewan architect Clifford Wiens is not only a huge influence on modern architecture but he’s also one of the best-known Saskatchewan architects in Canada.
Like Wiens, Koopman has developed a style that’s responsive to the landscape and the history of the Prairies. “Prairie people are very realistic. We’re very pragmatic people and once you figure that out, you can really work within that way of thinking and working,” says Koopman.

hen you’re trying to enjoy some quality time in the yard over the summer and are constantly being bothered by mosquitoes, it can be quite the buzz kill. Pest control company Buzz Boss aims to solve its customers’ bug problems and let them make the most of their summer. Buzz Boss, a Green Drop company, began in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg in 2015 and started offering its services in Regina and Saskatoon this past year. “There are certain pests that are medically significant in terms of the harm they can cause. Mosquitoes are probably one of the biggest ones, because they can spread West Nile virus,” said Tadek Sampson of Buzz Boss. “The biggest reason we’ve found a need for our services, though, is that most people in Canada just don’t want to be bothered by bugs and they want to have the freedom to enjoy their back yards.” Buzz Boss offers a BuzzShield™ Air package that provides complete mosquito and tick control. The BuzzShield™ Ground package targets ants, spiders and other crawling insects. The packages cost $198 a piece or can be combined through BuzzShield™ Complete ($245.15). Once Buzz Boss is hired by a client, Sampson said the company’s licensed trained technicians begin the process by taking a look at what’s happening “culturally” in the yard. “We check to see if there are things the customer could be doing that will minimize how attractive their house and yard is to the pests they don’t want around,” Sampson said. “Reducing standing water, for example, is a big one to reduce the breeding of mosquitoes and ticks. “We look at overgrown grass, hedges and bushes because mosquitoes, especially, like to find damp and shady places where they can get away from the sun and the wind. lawn will help reduce the number of ants in your yard. We come in and look at all those different factors happening on your property and if we see something, we take note of it and give you that information.” The next step is treating the current infestation. Sampson said that Buzz Boss uses a holistic approach to deal with pests in a responsible and environmentally conscious way, ensuring the chance of toxicity is kept to an absolute minimum. One of the unique
things about the company’s treatment solution is the inclusion of garlic. “We have about 300 different queues that we give off from our body chemically that attract mosquitoes. Their sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than ours,” Sampson said. “With garlic, especially with the type we use, there’s a really high sulphur content that will actually confuse a mosquito’s sense of smell. “We take 700 pounds of high potency garlic that has been compressed into about a gallon of solution, mix it with some vegetable oil and other natural ingredients and then mist it into those damp shady places in your yard that mosquitoes will tend to hang out. The goal is to get them to leave your property.” After the initial treatment, Buzz Boss returns to the customer’s home every month throughout the pest season. Sampson said the company’s philosophy is that it’s an ongoing process to manage pests. How do I properly maintain my air conditioning system? I’d recommend having a yearly system check performed to make sure your system is running properly and lasts a long time. Just like your car, your air conditioner will continue to operate without regular maintenance but can lose efficiency and life expectancy. When we come out for a system check, we’ll ensure that your refrigerant levels are correct with no leaks starting to show. We’ll make sure you have proper air flow in your system, ensure that the system is clean, check all of the electrical connections and let you know what can be done to keep the system running perfectly. Also, don’t forget to change your furnace filter on a regular basis. It’s just as important in the summer as it is in the winter.
My air conditioner cools my home unevenly. Is there anything that can be done to even out the temperatures? Yes, there are a few things that can be done. First of all, you could run your furnace fan on continuous fan by switching the setting on your thermostat to ON instead of AUTO mode. This will keep the air circulating in your home even when your air conditioner isn’t running and should help even out temperatures from room to room and especially from the basement to the main and upper floors. Careful though, unless you have a newer furnace with an ECM motor, this can be costly on your electrical bill. Secondly, I’d recommend having a technician come out to take a look at the system to make sure that it’s running properly with adequate airflow from your furnace fan, adequate return air capacity, and that your supply vents are properly balanced.
My 20-year-old air conditioner still does the job; is there any reason I should replace it? It depends on your situation. When properly installed and maintained, your air conditioner can last a long time. Homeowners tend to replace their older systems when they experience a breakdown as repairs are usually expensive and aren’t guaranteed to solve the issue for a long time. Some people replace their older units to reduce the noise in the back yard as new units run much quieter. Another reason for considering a replacement is to save electricity, which saves money and is better for the environment. New units are quite a lot more efficient and use less harmful refrigerants. If your older system is working, the noise isn’t bothering you, the electric bill isn’t astronomical, and it isn’t leaking any harmful refrigerant into the atmosphere, I’d just make sure it’s well maintained and keep a close eye on it.

do it very easily now – on a slightly smaller scale, obviously, to fit their yard.” These embellishments may take the form of distinctive lighting or unique features like sheer waterfall curtains or hotel-grade waterslides. Troy Bast, Paradise LeisureScapes’ construction manager, is charged with helping the imaginative ideas take shape and sees lighting as a key component. “Instead of the old conventional, one, big, bright light in the deep end, we are doing multiple LEDs throughout the pool,” he says. “A lot of the water features have LED lights incorporated into them, so, for nighttime, you can have a bubbler that looks like a lit volcano of water on the surface.” But it’s not just vacation nostalgia that entices residents to take a dip in their home pool. Fitness is also a key motivator and has led to the popularity of swim systems, whereby powerful jets of water allow people to swim in place. The systems can be installed at the time of construction or added later, and they can be fitted onto the side of a large backyard pool or in one with an interior measurement of as small as seven by 12 feet. This smaller design could even be installed in an unused family room in the basement, making it the ideal solution for those with little or no backyard space. Customization allows swimmers to choose their pace and, for those who prefer running or walking to swimming, some systems come with an underwater treadmill, which can provide a workout with little impact on the joints. This versatility makes water systems appropriate for exercisers with a wide range of athletic abilities, from seniors recovering from injuries to Olympic athletes. The water jet systems also have a fun side. Mieyette says, “An extreme example of this is a system where you can actually boogie board or kayak against them.” Another popular trend in swimming pools is the elimination of the deep end for diving, to create a five-foot depth overall. This makes a much better environment for sports such as volleyball and basketball. “People just assume you have to have a deep end and a shallow part, but the diving board is becoming an outdated thing, in our opinion,”

says Mieyette. Hot tubs and spas have also seen many innovations in in recent years, thanks to innovations in technology and design. Floating remote controls now provide convenient access to lighting, temperature, jet pressure, built-in speakers and watercare. This innovation, among other design elements, was introduced by the BMW Designworks team, who brought the same creativity to the hot tub industry that is used in the development of automobiles. Whether it’s a hot tub, spa or pool, it’s important to choose the one that best suits
the needs and desires of those using it in order to get the most from your investment. “We have probably 50 different models of hot tubs,” says Mieyette. “We always spend time discussing what their uses are: size of family is very important; type of use – is it hydrotherapy-driven or is it for relaxation? Is it just a place for morning coffee and to relax? All of the jets in the world are no reason to buy a hot tub if you plan to sit in it with the jets off.” Attention to detail is also vital when designing a pool. Bast creates a 3-D rendering so that clients can have a realistic
impression and make changes before the work has begun. Considerations should include: Is the pool for sports, swimming, relaxation, or all of the above? How old are your children? Is it for summer use only? Is appearance important? Do you want water features? Will extended family members be using it? Are you going to have parties? How long are you going to be in this house? Hiring a Safe Contractor By COLLiN PULLAR, SCSA PRESiDENT Companies who have achieved the nationally recognized Certificate of Recognition (COR™) standard in safety certification verifies that a company has a fully-implemented health and safety program that meets national standards and has passed an independent audit.
And what if they are not COR™ certified? What types of questions should consumers be asking about safety management systems? A: One of the most important questions to ask is if the company has an up-to-date safety manual with general safety policies, hazard recognition information, safe work practices, safe job procedures, personal protective equipment, preventative maintenance policies, training policies, inspection policies, and emergency preparedness information. In the construction industry, many businesses and their customers may not realize how much safety adds value to their projects, whether a home renovation or a major infrastructure project. Companies that are carefully methodical in their management of safety are more likely to be carefully methodical about other aspects of their business management (marketing, financial management, operations, human resources, communications, ethical awareness, environmental, risk management and quality).
How do consumers know if a business is committed to safety? Certification of a company’s safety management systems can be an effective measure of a company’s commitment to safety.

reated as a “clubhouse for people who love food”, The Local Kitchen opened in January 2017. Founder Julie Gryba explains the clubhouse hosts private events for eight to 12 people, for either a private chef ’s table or a private cooking class. More can be accommodated for certain events. The Local Kitchen hosts eight public cooking classes a month, as well as hosting corporate events – such as team-building cooking classes. The Local Kitchen has eight member chefs who do events and cooking classes. The back part of the location has a commercial kitchen that is available for rent for businesses and individuals who have a food business. This issue, Living Spaces is in the kitchen with one of the eight members, Chef Scott Dicks. Dicks grew up with a love of cooking near Vegreville, Alberta, but it didn’t occur to him to pursue it as a career. In high school he worked as a dishwasher and as he struggled with what to do after high school, it was a friend who suggested that he turn his love of cooking into a career. He took his training at SAIT in Calgary and worked at Village Chophouse. “I was always a good worker,” notes Dicks. “I got lucky to get some really good jobs with some really good chefs.” Those “really good chefs” included Rob Feenie in Vancouver and the renowned Boneta restaurant. His first head chef role
came at Les Faux Bourgeois. Saskatoon has been home for Dicks for the last three years. He’s worked at Primal and the Hollows. He currently works at Collective Coffee West and occasionally at 9 Mile Legacy Brewery, as well as preparing inhouse meals and caterings. Dicks says he continues to enjoy bringing people together around fresh flavours at the table. When he lived in Vancouver, he hosted sushi parties, where everyone would make their own sushi rolls with fresh ingredients prepared by Dicks. “That’s what keeps me going. But also the building of flavours – the taking of something – just bland raw ingredients – and turning them into something else. It’s a lot of fun,” says Dicks. His focus continues to be on fresh ingredients. He also has a partnership with Farm One Forty – a farm just outside Vanscoy which practices holistic farm management. For our Living Spaces readers, Dicks serves
up a grilling feast that highlights fresh local ingredients, including grilled green beans. “I started grilling beans last summer and I’ll never let them touch water again,” says Dicks. “It inspired me to never blanch my vegetables. It’s either high heat roast, raw or just straight sauté.” The key is to maintain the crunch and flavour. Along with the flavourful green beans, Dicks serves up a grilled pork tenderloin with Grilled Bean Salad and Romesco Sauce, and a simple Masa Cake with Basil Crème. Dicks also included a recipe for his pickling liquid. He sells a variety of pickles and preserves at The Local Kitchen.

Brined Pork Tenderloin 4 L water 225 g salt 125 g sugar Pork tenderloin Boil all together and let cool. Soak pork tenderloin for 3 hours, pat dry. Set grill on high. Rub outside of loin with olive oil, salt and pepper. Grill until medium rare, about 4 minutes per side.
PiCklinG liQuid 4 cups water 2 cups rice vinegar Ÿ cup white vinegar ž cup sugar 1.5 tbsp. salt Bring all ingredients to a boll. Pour over vegetables. Let sit for 3 hours.

Grilled Green Beans Trim ends off beans, toss in olive oil, salt and pepper. Grill until slightly charred and tender, about 2 to 3 minutes. Plate with greens, parmesan cheese, and dressing for a simple barbecue salad. Serve with Romesco Sauce.
roMesCo sauCe 1 large slice of thick bread 2 tomatoes (grilled) 5 cloves garlic ½ cup almonds 2 red peppers (roasted and peeled) 2 tbsp. sherry vinegar 1 tbsp. smoked paprika 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. cayenne ¼ cup olive oil Add all ingredients to food processor. Slowly add olive oil while it mixes.
Masa Cake
1 L whipping cream 1 cup basil leaves (chopped) 3 tbsp. sugar
2½ cups flour 1 cup masa harina 4 tbsp. sugar 2 tsp. salt 4 tsp. baking powder 2 cups milk 4 eggs 1 cup olive oil
Combine ingredients. Blend together. Whisk or whip until firm peaks are formed.
Mix wet ingredients into dry. Bake at 300° F. for 12 minutes. Serve with Basil Crème.
