Christmas has come to Soul Paper. The shop at 118-20th Street is packed with a dazzling array of unique Christmas gifts, gift presentation options, and the latest in holiday décor ideas. When it comes to gift wrapping, Soul Paper has much more than holidaythemed papers, says shop owner Susan Gallagher. “We also carry unique embellishments for personalizing gifts. Our ribbons, for instance, are real ribbon in most solid colours, plus cottons and hand-dyed silks. Some are stickybacked. There is also a lovely glittery gold ribbon from Italy.” Soul Paper carries a high-end line of gift tags, but Gallagher says many people like to create their own from the crafty materials the shop stocks. She says tissue paper is growing in popularity for gift wrapping. “We stock tissue in solids, metallics, and holiday themed designs. See-through Japanese watermark tissue is gorgeous, especially when layered over another paper.” Soul Paper’s display cabinets burst with patterned papers in lovely old-school, vintage, pastel, vibrantly coloured fun designs and more. Woodland themes are especially in vogue this year. Gallagher has brought in a selection of marbled paper handmade in Indonesia by single mothers who sell the paper to support their families. Every sheet is unique, sometimes even bearing the occasional thumb print of the maker. “We also have gift bags
There are so many delightful ideas for holiday décor, embellishments for gifts, or even gifts themselves, all at Soul Paper in Riversdale. DA R L E N E P O L AC H I C
and sturdy Christmasthemed gift boxes. “Another cool thing in our gift wrap section is books of paper—twelve folded sheets per book in specific design styles like Bauhaus, William Morris, Cuban Tiles, Money, Cars, and more.” When it comes to gift ideas, Gallagher points out unique office accessories: trinket trays, fancy scissors, letter openers, clever paperclips. Trendy woodland themes and animal designs show up on notecards, playing cards, mugs, and the like. There are tea towels with vintage-y patterns, and gorgeous water bottles. Pins continue to be popular as the ‘new accessory’ for lapels, purses, and shoes. “Of course we have stationery. The Rossi line has sets with beautifully coloured note papers and envelopes, some with gold marbling. The Rifle company has a line of pens and pencils, and all types of notebooks and planners, including meal planners.” Travellers’ notebooks and embellishments are an ongoing favourite for
people love to plan and organize their life. New to Soul Paper is Standard Issue which produces zipper notebooks, pens, etc. in ‘old school vintage.’ Gallagher says fountain pens and inks are always welcome gifts. So is a line of exquisitely beautiful phone cases suitable for 6,7,or 8 iPhones. Those who like to make their own gifts, tags and holiday decor items, will find an impressive array of art supplies kits, paper pads, Christmas themed stamps, rub-ons, stencils and the like. A cute stocking stuffer is an origami book with printed pull-out sheets. Fold along the lines to make an origami heart or fish. Soul Paper carries both boxed and individual
greeting cards, often from small specialty companies. It also stocks shipping boxes and bags, as well as Christmas postcards from Rifle. Gallagher says trends this year are rose gold and metallics found in a variety of papers that can be used in Christmas decorations, wrapping, garlands, ornaments, even book bindings. Browse for wooden advent calendars, Santa stress balls, and one-ofa-kind tree ornaments. Kids will love the special stationery sets for writing letters to Santa. One kits includes after-Christmas thank you cards. Soul Paper is sure to have the perfect holiday gift for that special person. As Gallagher puts it, “It’s a pleasure to bring in things that give people joy.

The Rez Christmas presents Vegas Vacation Tootoosis won several awards for his work, and in 2004 was made a member of the Order of Canada. Following his death, the Saskatoon Native Theatre Company was renamed in his honour. The theatre company was established in 1999, and does three to four comedy or drama productions each year. This season will be its first ever co-presentation with Persephone Theatre and La Troupe Du Jour. GTNT bills itself as an awardwinning theatre company whose artistic responsibility is to incorporate Indigenous culture, language and history into all aspects of its theatre practice. Every production, coproduction and presentation aims to increase the involvement of local, provincial and national Indigenous talent as it entertains, educates and empowers its viewers.

The Rez Ladies are off to Vegas this Christmas, hoping to catch a glimpse of Tom Jones and play an epic game of bingo. ‘Vegas Vacation’ marks the 14th year of The Rez Christmas productions by the Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre (GTNT) company. “Vegas Vacation is a remount of a production the company has done before,” says GTNT artistic director Jennifer Dawn Bishop. “It was written by Curtis Peeteetuce, a Saskatchewan playwright and a former artistic director of GTNT. The script has been modified but the scenario is the same. The three kohkoms have no family coming for Christmas, so they decide to head for Vegas.” The production’s main characters are played by Mitchell Poundmaker, Dalton Lightfoot, Cory Dallas Standing and Allana Dorion. Playwright Curtis Peeteetuce is from the Beardy’s & Okemasis Cree Nation and is well-known in the realm of theatre, radio drama, music and film. Vegas Vacation will see a five-day show run in Saskatoon from December 6 to 10, with school matinees on two of those days. It will be held at the Broadway Theatre. “This is our second year participating with the Broadway Theatre,” says GTNT’s assistant administrator Darlene Okemaysim-Sicotte. “The venue seats 400 people and is a good one for us. We’re almost always sold out.” She says Back to the Rez productions are the theatre company’s most popular running series, and a local holiday favourite. New to GTNT is the announcement of Jennifer Dawn Bishop as its artistic director for the 2017-2018 season and the company’s new permanent artistic director. Bishop is a 1999 graduate of Circle of Voices, an eight-month program for youth of all nationalities aged 15 to 24. Circle of Voices was established in 1999 as an intensive, culturallybased theatre training program where at-risk youth could learn the work and craft of live theatre. Now in its fifteenth year, Circle of Voices connects youth with theatre professionals who become mentors, providing artistic inspiration and modeling important life skills. The 2017-2018 Circle is sponsored by Potash Corp. The Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin
Okemaysim-Sicotte says the company is deeply grateful for SIGA’s financial support of $100,000 over five years. The company is also preparing for Gabriel Dumont’s Wild West Show which will run from February 27 to March 4, 2018. It is a co-production with Persephone Theatre and La Troupe Du Jour. Gabriel Dumont was a top act with ‘the most spectacular live event in the world’, as Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show was known. Dumont was billed as ‘The Hero of the Half-Breed Rebellion,’ but he dreamed of creating his own version of the Wild West Show that would tell the story of the Métis in an equally spectacular way. “One hundred and thirty years later,” says Bishop, “that dream will become a reality with this production.”
The Rez Ladies are off to Vegas in this year’s Christmas theatre production at the Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre. S U P P L I E D
Theatre company is named for one of its founding board members, Gordon Tootoosis. Tootoosis was a Canadian actor of Cree and Stoney descent. He was
born on the Poundmaker Reserve in 1941. He had a long and illustrious career as an actor, and offered encouragement, support and training to aspiring Indigenous actors.
