f you’re out and about and see a gaggle of women sporting bright red dresses, don’t be alarmed. That’s just the Little Red Dress Club – a group of energetic businesswomen in Saskatoon raising money for a good cause. Leanne Falkowsky, owner of Urban Wall Interiors, is one of the founding members. She says got the idea from her aunt who lives in Calgary. “She’s got a group of friends and they travel together and they all go out for dinner wearing red dresses. They create a whole bunch of curiosity when they go out in public together,” explains Falkowsky. In 2011, Falkowsky got together with friends Chantelle Butterfield and Candace Fox to talk about the idea. The trio were enthused about an opportunity to have fun and network with other motivated women in the city. But Falkowsky added an extra twist to the idea. “I

said, ‘What a great way to raise funds for the community,’” she recalls. With that the group was off. The idea attracted others: Sara Wheelwright, founder of TrustedSaskatoon.com and mortgage broker Tammy Wandzura. Soon they were planning their first event. About 25 women showed up in red dresses at what was then Tusk piano bar. “It sure did create a bit of a stir,” admits Falkowsky. Pretty soon people were coming down from the restaurant upstairs to investigate what was going on. The group raised funds for the women and children’s centre at the YWCA. The group received cheques from some of the patrons that night to go towards their cause. “That was great because (the YWCA) wasn’t expecting, they didn’t even know we were raising funds for them,” says Falkowsky. Another event raised funds for New Hope Dog

Rescue. Last year the group partnered with Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon and raised over $50,000 towards the building of a new home. “I think Habitat has been a really good one to work with because you can see exactly where the money goes. You can see the direct effect on the community. It’s been a good one for us to align ourselves with,” Falkowsky says. The wind up party to celebrate the $50,000 milestone was held at Village Amp and Guitar. Falkowsky says the event was a lot of fun for the over 60 members who attended. “Our events tend to be really over the top with everything in red. There were red boas and balloons and door prizes everywhere.” This year the Little Red Dress Club is once again teaming up with Habitat for Humanity with 100K in 100 Days. The kick-off for the fundraising campaign was held Sept. 15 and wraps up Dec. 24. The group

will be encouraging women across the city to donate. Donations go towards building a Saskatoon family a house they can call home. It’s an opportunity for women to make an impact in the city they live in. There are no membership fees to join the club. Falkowsky says the group is open and welcoming to everyone. “You just show up and have a good time.” There is a Facebook page devoted to the club to keep members informed of new events and initiatives. The page has 225 likes. The Little Red Dress Club also makes appearances at other events just for fun. Joining the club has members always on the lookout for a new red dress – even while they’re on vacation or traveling for work. “You almost start collecting them, whenever you see one, whether or not you ever wear it,” laughs Falkowsky. “All of our closets are adorned with one section of red dresses.” FW

ith our premature cold snap, Saskatonians are once again diving back into their closets to pull out their layers of over-worn sweaters, jackets, pants and leggings. Our favourite hot weather fashions will once again be left to languish a tthe back our closets, in hope of a better summer next year. On the prairies, our fall and winter wardrobes certainly get a workout. No doubt, we are all in need of an injection of fresh and exciting clothing options for the season ahead. Tammy Kehoe, who is celebrating her first anniversary as owner of Gentries in Scotia Centre, is enthusiastic about the Autumn/Winter collections that have arrived at her store. “It’s a very exciting season! Clothes are flying off our racks!” says Kehoe. Autumn always arrives in a kaleidoscope of rich, vibrant colours. Kehoe says this season brings a huge selection of fresh tones, from luscious burgundy and classic navy, to fashion brights like fuchsia

MAKE A CHIC TRANSITION above Transitioning into autumn can be tricky, but Sandbox in the City has you covered with these chic coordinates. Model Chelsea O’Leary wears a tunic dress by Smashed Lemon layered with a cozy sweater by Mexx. The beautiful autumn colours in this tunic make it a versatile addition to your wardrobe. Klassique owner Kajoo Kamal recently introduced the Nisse line to Saskatoon, impressed by the Canadian designer’s attention to detail, impeccable tailoring and sexy femininity. Last year, Nargisse Akyuz was a finalist for the Emerging Designer Award at Montreal Fashion Week. Taylor’s dress and matching zip-front jacket feature trendy colour blocking, in a sizzling combination of oyster (with subtle gold metallic highlights) and black banding. and citron. Texture is another element of style distinguishing the season. Lush-touch textiles like brocade, cashmere, silk, chiffon, velvet, lace and leather are coming together in innovative layers, says Kehoe. Sweaters are a wardrobe staple for the cold days ahead. “The sweaters are gorgeous; they’re so warm and inviting! We’ve got everything from chunky knits, oversized cardigans and even sweater dresses. Our Saint James line from Paris has some great sweaters. Our Eileen Fisher collection has some great over-sized sweaters and our 360 Cashmeres are really popular.” Business attire for women revolves around the suit. At Gentries, silhouettes range from tunic-style jackets to tailored jackets with the new squared shoulders. Bracelet-length (or three-quarter length) sleeves have been introduced this season by a number of top apparel brands. For a stylish evening out, Kehoe suggests opting for one of this season’s glamourous jumpsuits. “It’s a fun alternative to the little black dress. For maximum impact, you can dress it up with lots of blingy jewellery and a great pair of shoes!” Kajoo Kamal, founder of Klassique Designs in Scotia Centre, describes the upcoming Autumn/Winter season in one word: luxuriant! “Leather is the new denim. It’s such a nice, sleek polished look. We’re seeing leather treatments on everything – from dresses and knits to leggings,” says Kamal. Leather is in evidence in almost every collection, be it authentic hide or the new ‘vegan’ leather. Clothing silhouettes are more structured, refined and tapered this season, she adds. Straight and tailored lines are edging out high-low and handkerchief hemlines. “We’re also seeing a more structured shoulder in many garments,” says Kamal. The trouser pant is injecting new style on the separates scene, she adds. “The higher rise has become the standard.” Gold is the metal of choice this season, says Kamal, creating visual interest in both fabrics and accessories. The mixed metals craze from last year has continued through into this season, as designers show off their alchemy skills with combinations of gold, silver and copper. Autumn is the season to invest in a new winter coat. The collection at Klassique Designs is sure to catch your eye. “We’re seeing a lot of black this season, with striking use of leather, fur and texture. I always bring in a wonderful selection of white white coats and this season, our collection is simply stunning,” says Kamal. FW

A

re you suffering from fashion-fatigue, like you’ve seen it all before? Not going to New York any time soon? Two Fifty Two Boutique may be just the place to reboot your love of fashion. Just opened in Willowgrove in August, the shop offers some lines and styles not seen here before. “My whole concept was to bring the big city shopping experience to Saskatoon,” says owner Mackenzie Firby. A fashion lover with a penchant for shopping, Firby tends to find unique items during her travels. That’s also how she found inspiration for her new store. “I have one store in Los Angeles that I really like and one store in New York that I really like, and I kind of put them together. I got a lot of inspiration from them.” Additional motivation came from people who loved what she was wearing but couldn’t get it here. Two Fifty Two Boutique offers many brands, some that customers have never heard of, sourced out of New York and beyond. “Blaque Label is one of the hidden gems I found. They have somewhat trendier pieces, but they’re at a really great price point,” says Firby, and the label still delivers high quality. Hunter Bell, winner of the Fashion Star TV show, is another line that Firby brought in. “I’d watched the show and I’d bought a shirt of hers in LA and at the show in New York. I actually met her, and she was just so personable.” She does classic lines and cuts, but with unique fabrics combinations. “She’ll put leather into a dress with neoprene; the clothes are really cool and edgy.” Diane Von Furstenberg (DVF) is a better known line. “I’ve loved DVF for a few years. Diane created the wrap dress in the 70s and she’s still making the same wrap dress now,” says Firby. It’s a very iconic brand yet classic. “I think she’s recognizable to a lot of people. I already have some ladies that saw we’re carrying that line and they come specifically for that.” Two Fifty Two Boutique is a one-stop shop with a range of clothing and accessories – shoes, bags, jewelry, belts, scarves and coats – everything you need for a complete ensemble. “We have everything from jeans and T-shirts with flip-flops to an evening gown with heels and a clutch, to a winter jacket that we just got in. I wanted to fulfill every need that customers might have.” Trending this fall is the colour navy. “They’re saying it’s the new black, you can wear it with lots of other colours and gold or silver jewelry,” says Firby. Colours like olive, merlot and cobalt blue

are also trendy right now. “A lot of the lines have a cobalt blue handbag in a few different styles.” Another must-have colour is “rich reddy purples.” Also trending are high-waisted pants worn with the shirt tucked in. Firby has personal reasons for choosing the name Two Fifty Two, other than the fun of playing with numbers. It was a way to honour her mother and her home town of Kenaston. W

hen Candice Jones first opened Fashion Chronicle in 1984 it was parachute pants, printed two-piece dresses and shoulder pads – the bigger the better – that were all the rage. Three decades later, there are some garments that echo 1980s fashions, but the colossal shoulder pad is certainly not on the rack. The independent fashion store has remained an enduring success for three decades, watching many styles come and go. The secret to Jones’ success? A pretty basic formula based around turning a fresh inventory. “If it doesn’t sell, mark it down. If it does sell, you repeat it,” said Jones with a laugh. Of course, an overall love of fashion and willingness to build relationships can’t be underestimated. As styles have evolved, so has Fashion Chronicle and the customer base has remained loyal. The store has always catered to women aged 35 and up, and those who were once young girls tagging along with their mothers are now customers themselves. Jones has always relied on her staff as an integral part of the business, with many remaining with her for several years. Her staff have a real awareness of who their customers are and what they need. Fashion Chronicle’s roomy location in The Centre Mall shows such variety. The whimsical embellishments of Neon Buddha garments with oversized collars and mismatched buttons, the structure and striking look of fashion icon Joseph Ribkoff’s pieces and the soft, bright colourings of Bali-brand animal print tops make it an interesting browse. Thinly quilted vests are joined with the works of art

that are Pure Handknit garments. Displays are split into a dress area, casual and dressy sportswear and accessories, with an accent on made-in-Canada pieces. The upcoming fall and winter season brings a lovely colourful palette. Expect lots of punches of colour in the wardrobe, with teals and rusts to offset the staple brown and blacks. A look to the centre displays shows how many of the garments can be put together. Fashion Chronicle’s first customers shopped dress pants by Snazzy, coordinated sportswear by Mister Leonard and dresses from the Algo Corporation. They found their bling with I.B. Diffusion and 100 per cent cotton with L.A. Seatcovers. The high-end ladies store had its start in a strip mall on Venture Crescent. A number of location changes over the years have included a dedicated petite store. Jones’ business was the impetus for prominent designer French Dressing to introduce a new line to its customers. “When I first started out, French Dressing was not doing petite bottoms. I told them the success I was having, and they decided to get into the petite business; that is something we initiated,” Jones said. From the very first location 30 years ago, Joseph Ribkoff and French Dressing have been frontrunners in women’s fashion and remain a large part of the business. Some wonderful new additions include Frank Lyman, Jag and Neon Buddha. Jones is always on the lookout for new lines to incorporate, making sure that Fashion Chronicle remains a vibrant part of Saskatoon’s style scene for years to come. FW

he latest fall fashions have arrived at Midtown Plaza – Saskatchewan’s largest destination shopping centre. So what can shoppers find at the retail mecca? Lots and lots of knits! This according to Nicole Romanoff, Midtown stylist and fashion blogger. “The fall 2014 look is all about knits. When styling, be sure to mix knits of different varieties such as large chunky, cable or even a finer gauge to create a distinct fall look.” Layering for fall is extra important as cooler weather invades the praireis. Thick and cozy knitted sweaters, cardigans or scarves can help make the transition to fall. “I’m loving the chunky knit sweaters, layered with a tight knit circle scarf, styled with either a leather or plaid legging,” says Romanoff. For footwear, nothing says fall like boots! This season’s boots come in a variety of styles and colours. From tall to short, large chunky heels to slender spikes, in wild textures with metal accents or bright colours, there are boots every fashionista will love. “My mouth starts to water every time I pass by a shoe store lately,” remarks Romanoff. Want to add a luxurious edge to your fall wardrobe? Romanoff adds, “Another fabulous trend, and perhaps my favourite, is the fuzzy furs. Be sure to add touches of fur when styling your look to create a very elegant texturized outfit.” When talking colour, Romanoff says the key colour trend is grey. She suggests mixing textures

and tones of grey for subtle depth and polish. One last big trend for women’s fashion has a very masculine inspiration. “Keep an eye out for the menswear inspired trend. Designers have taken inspiration from men’s fashion, but with clean lines and shapes for a very feminine silhouette,” Romanoff explains. As for new fashion retailers coming to Midtown Plaza, Vaness Bomboir, the mall’s marketing director, remained mum. “We have exciting plans in the works, but we’re still in the final negotiations,” she explains. “We will share the news as soon as we can.” In the meantime, Midtown Plaza has joined the trend of mixing fashion and art sponsoring PARKLUXE Saskatoon 2014. PARK (Promoting Artists Redefining Kulture) events have taken place across Canada. Rouge Gallery will host the Saskatoon event on October 30. The goal of the event is to raise awareness about Canadian talent while raising funds for PARK – a volunteer organization. The evening will feature fab clothing by three Western Canadian designers. I

t takes 40 kilometres of thread to make one pair of the Marathon pant by Brax! That’s like from here to Delisle. The Marathon is a new concept five-pocket pant created in the pursuit of designing finer fabrics. “We sell them in some of the most interesting and unique fabrics,” says Elwood Flynn. The Marathon is 97 per cent cotton and three per cent lycra. It’s a jean style pant but in a lighter weight, comfortable soft stretch fabrics, in colours like charcoals, greys, blues and some earth tones. “They have that nice trim look. Some have very narrow legs, but most of our customers want just medium narrow. We have both.” Gardeur and Hugo Boss versions are also available. The five-pocket pant might sneak into certain boardrooms if paired with a nice jacket. But generally the board room still needs a more formal approach. Like a trim fitting suit. “That is fashion today, trimmer, shorter coats, somewhat slimmer lapels, and slimmer pants in width and dimension,” says Flynn. It’s a look that’s a bit more flattering to the build, according to Gord Burgess of Caswell’s. Of course, it’s not necessarily suited to every physique and holds special appeal for younger gentlemen. Dispensing with a tie is becoming more popular, for a somewhat less formal look. “There’s a lot of very dressy sport shirts on the market that are being worn with the suits and jackets now, so some people are leaving the tie out, but in place of the tie, adding some colour with a pocket square,” says Burgess. Ted Baker and Hugo Boss are key players in the men’s apparel market. Black is giving up some territory this season, although it will always be in the picture. Currently, charcoal, greys and navy are gaining strength on the colour front. Flynn says although stripes are still dressy in a suit, subtle checks are coming in. All of Flynn’s suits are mid-weight, high-twist resilient fabrics that can be worn year round. Flynn has noticed a bit of interest in double breasts, but they’re updated to a slimmer, trimmer version with narrower lapels, and they’ve sold some made to measure. Burgess says there’s a bit more focus on men’s footwear. Shoes have become very important, similar to what they are in ladies wear. “We’re seeing British tans and beige coloured shoes as opposed to the traditional black that has always been typical of the North American market. The European market in past years has always focused on a lot of brown shoes and that’s where the focus is right now for men.” Beautiful Allen Edmonds shoes in quality leathers, including burnished leather, are favourites. Burgess appreciates the extra detail and slightly higher contrast with the top stitching. Monk straps are popular. Flynn loves the cognac shade of shoes that can be worn with everything – black, navy, blue, grey, etc.- and has a wide selection of leather belts to match the shoes. Coloured shoelaces are a popular choice for adding some “pop.” The colourful socks of last season are still making a splash. Although striped shirts are still a great choice, Flynn says checks are edging out some of their shelf space. Viyella shirts in beautiful checks and prints, in an exceptional 50/50 wool and cotton blend are Canadian made. A top seller is Elwood Flynn’s Signum shirts from Germany. Beyond the boardroom, Caswell’s offers a new take on a staple in casual wear. “Corduroy is getting a treatment you typically see on denim. They’re using some different dying processes. It’s a spray dye which is washed and hand sanded,” says Burgess, creating a look similar to certain denim washes. Van Gils is Caswell’s “youngest garment,” trimmer through the body with a narrow leg, offering some unique looks. Caswell’s also carries the black, orange and green divisions of Hugo Boss. FW

M

en are the new darlings of the fashion world! According to the 2014 Global Apparel and Footwear Market Update, men’s apparel has outperformed the women’s clothing market in key markets, including the U.S., Britain and Germany, for the past five years. The Business of Fashion, a trade journal specializing in fashion business intelligence, concurs, reporting that the “veritable boom in the men’s fashion market shows no sign of abating.” In Britain, for example, men are now outspending women on fashion purchases such as shoes. In the U.S., men’s apparel sales increased by five per cent in 2013, while women’s apparel sales only grew by four per cent. Sales of men’s footwear in the U.S. increased at double the rate of women’s footwear over the past two years. In response, major fashion brands like Gucci, Prada and Ralph Lauren have ramped up and expanded their menswear lines – even opening up dedicated menswear stores. What’s driving menswear mania? Is it a trend being echoed here in Saskatoon? Anthony Graham-Cutts, the owner of Anthonys Fashion for Men on First Avenue South, says men in our city have become “more aware of fashion than they’ve been for years. They’re conscious of the trends and are focused on what they’re wearing. A lot of that is the influx into the city of people from other provinces and countries. They’ve set the benchmark for style a little higher and guys are following suit.” Exposure to new trends via the Internet and popular TV shows like Mad Men have also had an impact. “Saskatoon men are seeing the trends and they’re accepting them,” says Graham-Cutts. Barry Flynn, owner of Ultimo Euromoda on Third Avenue South, sells contemporary, uniquely sourced fashion lines for both men and women. He says that Saskatoon men are definitely showing greater interest in trends and styles than in the past. Flynn says that slimmer silhouettes and new fabrications have captured men’s interest. Men are ditching their old ill-fitting suits, baggy jeans and shapeless shirts for trim, body-conscious styles. “The technology that’s in every part of our lives has really come to the forefront of fashion. They’re coming up with new washes and finishings on fabrics. A lot of it is comfort-driven; lots of stretch applications in shirts, pants and jackets,” says Flynn. “Lycra has been added to a lot of fabrications. It’s been a great way to introduce that slimmer cut to guys who traditionally would just buy ‘comfortable’ instead of something that looked great on them. We have blazers now that are made out of high quality jersey. You put that on and it feels like you’re wearing your favourite hoodie, but you’re dressed up.” Slim-fitting shirts are a must-have for today’s fashionconscious man, a huge shift from the one-size-fits-all silhouette of past decades. Of course, that new shirt silhouette means men have to rethink the jeans in their closet. “You can’t wear the slimmer-cut shirts with the old straight-leg, loose jeans. You have to match up the silhouette, from top to bottom,” says Flynn. “The introduction of Lycra to denim is giving the guys an opportunity to be better dressed than ever before.” Men are also paying more attention to fashion details than before, reports Flynn. His store has seen a 100 per cent increase in sales of socks and pocket squares over the past year. “A lot of men are wearing wilder socks than they ever have before. We’re even seeing guys wearing pocket squares with a t-shirt and blazer.” Graham-Cutts says that men are even paying more attention to their outwear. “That parka over your suit jacket doesn’t cut it any more,” he laughs. He’s excited about the new fall/winter collections at Anthonys, including new unstructured jackets and polished outerwear pieces. At Anthonys, texture is a big style element for the upcoming season. “We’re seeing a lot of texture: textured blazers with some loft to them, knit sweaters with a tac-

WANUSKEWIN HERITAGE PARK continues to evolve BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH OF SP CREATIVE FEATURES

T

he site of Wanuskewin Heritage Park has served as a meeting place of nations for thousands of years. Located five kilometres north of Saskatoon on Wanuskewin Road, the Park was given recognition as a National Historic Site by Queen Elizabeth in 1987, acknowledging the cultural and archeological significance of the site. Wanuskewin Heritage Park was established in 1992, continuing the traditions and mandate to be a unique and authentic experience for all visitors. Over the last five years, Wanuskewin has undergone a significant renewal and restructuring. “We have a new focus and a vision with the organization. We want to take that forward into the future. We’re building on what was already here in the past and then taking the organization into the future,” says Dana Soonias, Wanuskewin CEO. One of the goals of the renewal is to bring United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage designation to the park. World Heritage sites around the world are deemed to have importance to all of humanity due to their natural beauty or cultural significance. Obtaining the UNESCO designation would take a commitment at all three levels of government and improvements to the programming offered at the centre. “That’s a long term goal. It’s not something that happens overnight but that’s part of our goal and our vision going forward,” Soonias explains. The next step for Wanuskewin is to launch a funding campaign that will once again have exhibits return to the facility. As they develop the new exhibits, staff will be looking for ways to incorporate technology into the Wanuskewin experience. Other challenges are looming on the horizon – literally. With the economic boom in the province, the city of Saskatoon to the south and the cities of Martensville and Warman are expanding. “They’re all converging on this location,” says Soonias. “We’re looking at becoming an urban park versus a rural park. We’ve just gone through a planning process that will take us out 20 years. (We have a) vision of growth and renewal that will allow us to transition from a rural park to an urban park.” The City of Saskatoon’s latest growth plan puts Wanuskewin Heritage Park within the city limits. As well, a north commuter bridge would be located just

As part of a long term renewal process, Wanuskewin is looking to bring back exhibits and displays. One of the attractions CEO Dana Soonias would like to bring back is live bison. a kilometer or two south of the Park, opening up all kinds of new commercial and industrial development in the city’s north end. This would have a significant impact on the Park. The challenges facing Wanuskewin are not unique, notes Soonias. “Museums are all changing. You can’t remain stagnant anymore. You have to have some change and flex in your programming but also your exhibits. So that’s something that we’re taking into consideration in our next renewal phase.” A live bison exhibit is just one of the initiatives under discussion. The Park attracts between 25,000 and 40,000 visitors each year. Many are students from the surrounding school divisions. During the summer months the focus shifts from educational programming to tourists – with visitors coming from across the globe to catch a glimpse of authentic North American aboriginal art and culture. The site is also becoming more and more popular as a location for corporate functions and weddings. With a full service kitchen and executive chef on staff, all types of catering can be offered to fit the needs of almost any type of event or social gathering. “We have beautiful scenery and at lunch time you can go for walks, spend some time on the patios and

ngles SalonSpa in Midtown Plaza has once again competed with distinction at the 2014 Total Beauty makeover competition presented by La Biosthetique Paris, a world leader in cosmetic and salon products. The salon’s team of stylists trained for nine months in preparation for the intense competition, including participating in a competition in Germany this spring, says Tammy McLean, founder and director of Angles SalonSpa. “Competition at a national level is tough. Even tougher is for certain people to take Saskatchewan stylists seriously,” she says. Under McLean’s direction, her team succeeded in placing four finalists in this year’s world-wide competition – proof that Saskatchewan artists have what it takes to be considered top contenders. “The competition is based on a ‘before’ and ‘after’ effect,” explained McLean. “The contestants were judged on make-up, clothing, model, suitability and fashion forward cut/ colour and styling.” The staff and guests of Angles SalonSpa have their fingers crossed awaiting the results. “We are hoping for a repeat performance as Angles competed in Paris, France after placing first in the country last year. Although Canada was beat out by Ukraine, the experience made us fight even harder for a world title this year!” says McLean.

hen it comes to fashion footwear, Autumn2014/Winter 2015 is the season of choice! Shoe afficianados will find every footwear style imaginable at local retailers, as well as styles beyond the imagination. This season’s haute couture runways sported everything from sneakers and skate shoes to thigh-grazing boots! What’s on your wish list?

SNEAKERS Yes, sneakers! Top fashion houses like Chanel shocked audiences by marching sneaker-clad models down the runways at their Fall/Winter couture shows. Fashion buyers are raving about the new status of sneakers and skate shoes, saying the casual flats are reflective of their customers’ relaxed lifestyles. Even iconic designers like Jimmy Choo have jumped on the sneaker bandwagon – albeit at a much higher price point than Keds! LUG-SOLES Podiatrists are sure to love this trend. This season, workboot-inspired lug soles are the comfy platform for everything from casual flats and loafers to funky elevated wedges. The thick rubber soles sport distinctive patterns, including diamond- and v-shaped indentations. It’s a new take on the grunge-inspired Doc Martens’ look of the ‘90s. STATEMENT HEELS Look to your heels for the season’s most innovative twists in fashion footwear. Chunky heels, block heels and nail-thin stilettos are just a few of the head-turning options out there. Miu Miu created a blogger frenzy with its hardware-embellished ‘nuts-and-bolts’ and ‘screw’ heels. Butterfly-shaped heels captured designer Alberto Guardiani’s fancy. Dolce & Gabbana turns up the sparkle on its velvet pumps with crystalencrusted block heels. Christian Louboutin achieved new heights in fashion by unveiling his tallest-ever single-sole pump, with a heel height of 130mm! For the metric-challenged, that’s over five inches! REPTILE HUNTER Faux snakesin sneakers... python pointy-toed pumps... mock croc booties. Is snakeskin the new black this season? Snakeskin prints are so popular this season they are transitioning from footwear and handbags to clothing offerings – everything from snakeskin print skirts, dresses and tunics to skinny jeans. Christian Dior’s snakeskin houndstooth pump is a particular charmer!

Store manager Michelle Riglin has lovingly created a tribute to the timeless icon we have all grown up with. O

nce upon a time, in a land not far away, a fair maiden discovered a treasure trove of sparkling crystals, fancy beads and richly coloured precious stones. “Aha”, she thought. “I shall fashion some exquisite jewellery from these wonderful gems that will be collected and worn by women from across the land!” Our modern fairy tale doesn’t end here. Our enterprising maiden went on to conquer the fire-breathing creatures of CBC’s Dragon’s Den, displayed her treasures on Oscar’s Red Carpet, and last fall, charmed the Queen herself with a one-of-a-kind jewellery piece. Like the very best fairy tales, this one is actually a dream come true for Regina designer Rachel Mielke, the founder of Hillberg and Berk (H&B). Since founding the company in 2007, H&B has evolved into one of Canada’s leading luxury labels. H&B’s beautifully handcrafted jewellery has captured the hearts of women across North America, including a number of celebrities: Carrie Underwood, Sarah McLachlan, Michelle Obama, Barbara Walters and Celine Dion. In October of 2013, the Lieutenant-Governor of Saskatchewan commissioned Hillberg and Berk to create a fabulous brooch for the Queen of England, for presentation at Buckingham Palace. The Queen was then seen wearing the brooch during an outing in Norfolk. “In creating her piece, we really reflected on her wardrobe, the colours that she wears and the pieces that weren’t in her existing jewellery collection. That’s why we chose Madagascar tourmaline, something that she didn’t already have. We offset the brooch with freshwater pearls, which she often wears in public,” says Mielke. “We thought the piece would be very wearable and complementary to the freshwater pearl pieces she already had.” The opportunity to design jewellery for Her Majesty inspired the creation of H&B’s new Autumn/ Winter collection, entitled Contes de Fées. “The line really reflects the fairy tale we feel we are living at Hillberg and Berk. We wanted to display some of the successes and opportunities we’ve had through the jewellery pieces in the collection,” says Mielke. The collection’s majestic theme is portrayed

through the use of “royal stones, beautiful metals and really rich colour palettes,” says Mielke. “There are a lot of jewel tones, gold, silver and pearls. The gem tones are incorporated through Swarovski crystals – in really rich greens, reds and purples.” Every fairy tale revolves around the conflict between light and darkness. Hillberg and Berk interprets that drama through the selection of richly hued semi-precious stones, including black onyx, moody agates and blood-red rubies. Part of the appeal of H&B jewellery is its versatility, with pieces that can be deconstructed or embellished into different looks. “For instance, our long necklaces can double up as short necklaces, or be worn as a wrap bracelet,” says Mielke. “Not every piece is convertible, but we try to make the line as versatile and as timeless as we can make it, so it’s really an investment-worthy piece.” Appreciative of her success, Mielke works to empower other women through her support of charitable causes. In the past, H&B has partnered with organizations including Dress for Success, Wings of Hope, Diva’s Night Out, Myeloma Canada and the Somali Women’s Scholarship Fund. In 2014, Mielke launched the Hillberg & Berk Foundation. “It will support a number of different causes throughout the year. The first initiative of the charity was to set up an endowment scholarship through the University of Regina. It will continue on in perpetuity starting this fall. We’ll be choosing a woman each fall to give the scholarship too, based on their philanthropic contributions to the community as well as financial need,” says Mielke. Reaction to the new H&B Autumn/Winter collection has been wonderful, says Mielke. “Our store has been busy, online sales have been great and our distributors are really excited.” In Regina, customers can shop the H&B showroom, located at 2169 McIntyre Street. A ‘Sparkle Kiosk’ at the Cornwall Centre will offer a second convenient location from October through February. ou don’t have to go far to discover one-of-a-kind hand-made artisan jewellery and collectibles. Just visit www.ShopWanuskewin.ca, the online gallery representing the gift shop at Wanuskewin Heritage Park. Since the national heritage park opened in 1992, Wanuskewin’s gift shop has gained renown for its outstanding collections of traditional and contemporary First Nations works of art, including pottery, sculpture, paintings, jewellery, even fashion accessories such as beaded handbags and moccasins. Gift shop manager Carol Merasty says that traditional handcrafts such as birch bark biting, dream-

catchers, antler carvings, bow and arrow sets and beading are particularly popular with international visitors to Wanuskewin. Wanuskewin’s online gallery went live late last fall and has been attracting shoppers from destinations as diverse and far away as Pennsylvania and Germany. “We’re receiving sales from around the world. I don’t know how they heard about it, but it’s been great!” says Merasty. “Each week, we add something new. We try to keep the online gallery as up to date as possible.
