Creative Kids makes arts, culture more accessible by Jeannie armstrong sP sPecial ProJects editor
Music lessons, dance class, art and theatre experiences are activities that many children take for granted. For the more than 33,000 children living below the poverty line in Saskatchewan, learning to play an instrument or taking an art or dance class is simply beyond their families’ means. Creative Kids is a funding program offered by Sask Culture that helps overcome financial barriers to participating in cultural and creative activities and empowers kids to follow their dreams. Christie Nenson, who works in fund development with Creative Kids, says, “Our vision is that all Saskatchewan children will have opportunities to participate in art and cultural activities and have their lives positively impacted by those experiences.” There is overwhelming evidence that participation in artistic and cultural activities benefits children in many ways. “It’s important for our youth to be creative thinkers. Even if they don’t go on to be professional performers or artists, the increased self-esteem, creative thinking, sense of accomplishment and feeling
Creative Kids helps youngsters who face financial barriers to participate in cultural and artistic activities and follow their dreams. Photo: Creative Kids
of belonging that comes from these experiences helps people no matter what they end up going
on to do,” says Nenson. The Creative Kids program is modelled after the KidSport™ program which provides financial assistance to children who want to participate in sports but face financial barriers. Nenson points out, “Not all kids connect with sports. There weren’t any programs available that would provide opportunities for kids who want to dance, make music or art, or are interested in theatre to take lessons in their own communities.” Creative Kids was established in 2010, thanks to a funding partnership with PotashCorp. The program’s operating and administrative budget is provided by Sask Culture. “We made our first grant in the fall of that year to a little girl who wanted to take ballet lessons,” says Nenson. Creative Kids supports a diverse range of activities. “Creative activity is so broad. Most of our activities fall into five general areas: music, dance, art, culture and theatre. We have kids who have joined an improv group, taken pottery lessons, learned a variety of instruments, studied traditional and cultural dance – and more! We have also had kids who took language lessons, Japanese in one case, so they could communicate with their grandparents,” says Nenson. The program provides funding of up to $750

per child, per year. “The family has to demonstrate that there is a financial barrier to participation. We look at each application individually. Determining factors include the family’s location and the number of children that they have. A family of four, for example, could apply for funding of up to $750 per year, per child,” says Nenson. Children must be four to 19 years of age to qualify. Nenson says it is unfortunate that Creative Kids is now receiving more applications than it can fund on an annual basis. In addition to the generous investment made by PotashCorp every year for the past three years, Creative Kids funds the applications through private and corporate donations, and fund-raising events. “It’s a really great opportunity for people who are interested in supporting us, because 100 per cent of the money we get goes right to the community to support the applications that we receive,” says Nenson. Summer camp options abound are overnight, while others are day camps.
Summer camp is a beloved tradition in many families. Many parents of young children fondly recall spending their summers at summer camp, where they made lifelong friends and learned the finer points of roasting marshmallows and competing in three-legged sack races. Parents looking for the right summer camp for their kids will soon discover there are various types of summer camps, each offering youngsters something different. The following are some of the summer camp options parents can expect to encounter as they search for the right camper for their kids. DAY CAMP Day camps are not overnight camps, which means kids will return home each night rather than sleep over at camp. Day camps typically offer many of the activities people have come to associate with camps, including crafts, sports and even day-trips to experience local culture or attractions. Many day camps are co-ed, and counselors typically live within the community. FAITH-BASED CAMP Faith-based camps offer many of the same
FAMILY CAMPS Family camps are opportunities for the whole family to enjoy the summer camp experience. Family camps typically tailor their activities around tasks families can complete together, with counselors providing assistance when it’s needed. Family camps may be faith-based or secular, and families typically stay overnight, sleeping in facilities on the campsites or in lodging away from home. SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPS Parents of children with special needs can still send their kids to summer camp, as there are many camps that cater to such youngsters. Special needs camps may cater to campers who are blind, deaf, learning disabled, or mentally or physically disabled. Staff at special needs camps typically undergoes extensive training, which helps to calm some of the fears parents may have about leaving their special needs children at camp. Facilities at special needs camps are often built to accommodate the specific needs of campers. (MNS)

activities as more traditional summer camps, but do so while simultaneously offering campers the opportunity to celebrate and further explore their religious beliefs. Some faith-based camps may focus heavily on religion, incorporating faith into daily camp activities, while others may be more subtle with regard to integrating religious beliefs and lessons into camp activities.
SPORTS CAMPS Some summer camps focus on a particular sport, catering to young athletes who want to further develop their athletic talents. Sports camps may feature guest lectures and lessons from notable local athletes and coaches, while some camps may provide instruction from current and/or former professional athletes. Some sports camps

How about an outdoor movie night? During the golden age of outdoor movie viewing, drive-in-movie theaters were a phenomenon. By the late 1950s, one-third of theaters in America were drive-ins. Today, the drive-in theatre is just a memory for many communities. Saskatchewan is fortunate to have two drive-in movie theatres currently in operation. The Clearwater Drive-in located in Kyle has made summer evenings more entertaining since 1947. The drive-in’s owners have recently enhanced visitors’ viewing experiences with the addition of a new screen and digital projector. Before the show begins, kids can go have fun and burn off some energy in the playground. The Clearwater Drive-in shows movies starting at dusk, now through August 31 (closed Tuesdays). For complete details, visit www.clearwaterdrivein. com. This summer, the Jubilee Drive-in at Manitou Beach celebrates its 60th anniversary. A season of fabulous summer movie classics is planned for the 2015, ideal for family viewing. What makes the Jubilee Drive-in even more unique is that a 24-seat indoor theatre is available, in addition to the outdoor grounds. Weekend showings are scheduled from now through October and
various sizes, and there are some pocket-sized varieties that can work with phones and other mobile devices. Create multi-leveled viewing by setting up seating on an incline in the yard, if available. Otherwise, place lawn chairs toward the back and have viewers in the front sit on blankets or towels so they do not obscure the screen for viewers in the back. Choose a family-friendly or kitschy movie to display. Delve into the classics of your movie library. Imagine seeing “Jaws” on a big screen once more or a cult-classic like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” When creating an outdoor viewing experience at home, don’t forget to make food part of the experience. Bring out the popcorn maker and fire up the grill to ensure there are plenty of tasty items available. Build in some intermission time when everyone can get up from their chairs or picnic blankets and mingle. Also, plan some pre- and post-viewing activities. Drive-in theaters were known to include some additional entertainment to boost attendance. Having a dance party or including some carnival-type games can make for a well-rounded and enjoyable night. every night during the summer months of July and August. To check out the upcoming line-up of movies, visit www.moonlight-movies.com. BACKYARD FILM FESTIVAL Taking a road trip to visit a drive-in theater can be an entertaining adventure. But outdoor movie
enthusiasts also can construct an outdoor theater in the comfort of their own backyards. Projectors enable viewers to display a movie on just about any large, unobscured surface. While a large, hanging sheet can be handy, any smooth surface on your home, such as a large expanse of wall, can do the trick. Projectors now come in

Try a new craft this summer Summer vacation is a great time to explore the world of crafts. Crafting can be an excellent outlet for self-expression and an entertaining way to pass the time. Many crafters even turn their hobbies into successful business ventures. This year certain trends are poised to take crafting by storm. Those making the rounds on Pinterest and crafting blogs may discover the following crafts are trending in 2015. NATURAL ELEMENTS Crafters are taking their cues from nature, and you’re certain to find natural elements, such as wood, bark and burlap, in craft projects. Distressed finishes on furniture and photo frames will still demand attention. Do-it-yourself projects, such as turning a slab of a tree trunk into a table or upcycling wooden shipping palettes into shelving, also will grow in popularity. Whenever working on designs that feature natural materials, try to repurpose elements whenever possible for the most rustic, authentic feel. CHEVRON AND DIAMONDS Those sprucing up home decorating elements
with stencils or chalk paint can find inspiration in many places. Patterns that continue to show up in abundance include chevron and various incarnations of the diamond. It’s easy to dress up just about any element with some well-placed stenciling, which does not necessarily require a wealth of skill or experience. Stencils also can be used on flooring to create a faux area rug effect. COLOUR OF THE YEAR If you get giddy over the warmth of browns and reds, you will be enamored with Pantone’s 2015 Colour of the Year: Marsala. Blending burgundy and brown tones to create a hue perfect for filling a wine glass or painting dining room walls, you will see plenty of this robust shade in decorative elements and clothing this year. BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN An ecologically sound and creative trend for spring involves crafting your own garden terrarium. Terrariums can be made out of just about any shaped glass or plastic container. Use hardy plants and a moisture-holding substrate
to help your terrarium flourish. Terrariums can be interesting focal points for any room, and they’re a creative use for empty vases, aquariums and other containers collecting dust. PAINTING ON CANVAS Each year brings with it a new crafting obsession. This year it’s poised to be watercolour
painting. Classes are bound to pop up in craft stores and other hobby centers near you. Or you can experiment at home with just a few basic tools. Crafting continues to be a popular form of expression and a beloved pastime. Certain trends emerge each year that set the course for do-ityourself projects. (MNS)

Organized sport helps kids maximize potential The benefit of physical activity to children is undeniable. From improved health and wellbeing to increased focus in school, sport has the power to change lives. Yet one in three Canadian families can’t afford to enroll their children in organized sport. The importance of sport goes beyond the obvious physical gains. Organized sport helps Canadian youth become more independent while developing key life skills such as leadership, discipline, and confidence. Giving every Canadian child the opportunity to participate in sport is important to the development of our future generation. That’s why Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and its 1,900 Community Partners across Canada are helping to close this gap. This year Jumpstart celebrates its 10th anniversary of providing kids from financially disadvantaged families the opportunity to get involved in an organized sport or physical activity of their choice by covering costs associated with registration, equipment and transportation. The charity continues to grow – last year Jumpstart gave 190,000 kids the opportunity

to play and this fall, will reach its one millionth child helped. That’s one million kids spanning
virtually every community across Canada who have been given the chance to develop
the confidence, discipline, leadership and teamwork skills that come with participation in organized sport, and Jumpstart intends to keep the momentum going. “Providing one million kids with access to over 76 different sports over ten years is an incredible milestone for Jumpstart and we do it because we believe sport means something to a child’s development,” says Landon French, Executive Director, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “We believe that every kid deserves an equal opportunity to play, learn and grow, and we’re looking forward to helping a million more kids in the years to come.” This June, you can help kids in your community get in the game by supporting Jumpstart’s Red Ball campaign at any Canadian Tire store. A $2 donation in exchange for your own Jumpstart Red Ball, will give the gift of play to a deserving kid. One hundred per cent of customer donations help children in the local community.
