WATROUS & MANITOU BEACH

Soak up the good life in Watrous-Manitou

Half way between the Alberta and Manitoba borders, nestled in Saskatchewan’s picturesque parkland region, lies the Watrous-Manitou area, with its undulating landscape and famous healing waters. The parkland, the geographical area of the province that separates the prairie grassland to the south from the boreal forests of the North, is covered with trees and dotted with lakes and agricultural land. Long a magnet for First Nations people, its beauty and the healing waters of Little Lake Manitou began drawing European settlers around the turn of the 19th century. The first settlers arrived in about 1903, with the greatest influx between 1904 and 1914. Watrous was named after Frank Watrous Morse, the general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific. It was incorporated as a town in 1909, with a population of 659. The population of the area has now grown to more than 3,000 residents, including Watrous and the village of Manitou. In addition to the varied landscape, which supports a wide range of agricultural and industrial enterprises, it is the long, narrow length of Little Manitou Lake arching across the area that fuels its success. “The biggest thing is the healing waters of Little Lake Manitou,” says Brendan Manz, community development officer with the Town of Watrous. “It is one of only three like it in the entire world, and the only one like it in North America. It’s similar to that of the Dead Sea and the mineral content is

so rich that it is actually six times denser than the ocean,” he says. First Nations legend tells of the discovery of the healing power of the lake in the distant past. It is said that a group of young men, ill from European disease, recovered after spending several days at the lake and soaking in its restorative waters. Medicine men named the lake Manitou in honour of their deity, the Great Spirit. This and other stories of the “Lake of Healing Waters” spread throughout the Plains and, eventually, around the world. The waters are said to possess a range of healing and therapeutic properties and the entire industry based on it continues to attract visitors from near and far. “It’s a great thing to lay back and enjoy. It’s great for aches and pains and for the skin as well,” says Manz. Formed by receding glaciers during the most recent ice age, the long, narrow lake is fed by underground springs. But, there’s no way out for the water, so the minerals like sodium, magnesium and potassium salts build up. The salt content of the water (180 g/L) gives it a density about half of that of the Dead Sea, allowing bathers to float easily. Manz says the area is on its way to matching the area’s big heyday back in the 1920s and ‘30s. “It was the second most popular vacation spot in Western Canada, next to Banff. People would come on the train from all over the prairies to come and enjoy the waters. It was kind of a mecca

back in the day,” he says. And it is still is, with more than 200,000 visitors coming for the waters and other attractions every year. While it’s the waters that may be the major draw, Manz says there are numerous other reasons to visit the area, including the amenities of the Manitou and District Regional Park, located right on the lake just north of Watrous. It features 236 tent and RV sites, as well as picnic facilities, mini-golf and other recreational activities. “It’s the second largest regional park in Saskatchewan,” says Manz. The area also boasts a nine-hole golf course, nature trails and other attractions for those who love the outdoors. It’s even possible to watch a movie outside at one of the last drive-in movie theatres in the province or dance the night away at Danceland, a unique dancehall with a horsehair cushioned dance floor. Manz says the area is increasingly drawing young families. “We’re focusing on getting the families here. We’re starting to see a lot of that. “We still have a drivein theatre, one of the last in the province, and a mini-golf course and a few other things that encourage families to the area,” he says. Many of those families will doubtless enjoy the Watrous & Manitou Beach Fun Run Auto Show ‘N Shine 25th anniversary coming up on July 23. Presented by the WatrousManitou Chamber of

Commerce since 1992, it’s a major exhibition of vintage and theme vehicles, drawing almost 200 cars, trucks and tractors to the main street of Watrous. Watrous has also become something of a draw for a range of artists, making it almost the Taos of the north. “There are over 50 artists and artisans in our community, which is pretty significant in a population of 2,300 people,” Manz says. Increasingly, those artists are adding their presence to the many attractions drawing tourists to the area. “We’re finding these days that tourists are looking for a cultural experience where they can actually go and sit down and talk with the artists. Experiential tourism is I think what they call it, so we’re trying to do more of that,” he says. Manz points to two major events coming up this summer as further examples of the area’s artistic trend. On the Spirit of Manitou Annual Studio Trail, July 9 and 10, artists and artisans from Meacham, Watrous and Manitou Beach will showcase their talents. There will also be an artists’ creation expo Aug. 2 to 14. “So, there are a few things going on. We have that niche with the artists and we’ve folded that into our tourism,” he says. From the arts to the waters, the WatrousManitou area has something for everyone!

Executive chef brings new lunch menu to Danceland WENDY LIVINGSTONE POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

At almost 90 years of age, Danceland is not too old to try something new. The world-famous Manitou Beach landmark has added a new reason for residents and tourists to drop in, as it is now home to Marina Café, which offers lunches Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Danceland owner Millie Strueby has hired executive chef Simon Fraser, who brings his own twist to a mid-day meal with what Strueby calls, “sandwiches from around the world,” and soups-of-the-day that are, “completely made from scratch.” The social atmosphere of the Marina Café makes it a great spot for casual dining and socializing. “There are tables of six,” said Strueby,

“so two come in and another two join them and maybe somebody else comes in. You can sit down with your neighbour and have lunch with them.” Fraser, who has worked in upscale restaurants from Vancouver, to Calgary, to Saskatchewan’s famous Elkridge Resort, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of food, wine and spirits. “It’s my serious passion. I just love cooking and putting ingredients together,” he said. Fraser also oversees the popular buffets that are available before dance night events, which, Strueby said, are held, “in the summer most Fridays and every Saturday, unless we have a wedding.” Toonie Tuesday is also a popular event at Danceland, when, for just $2, guests can enjoy an hour-and-a-half of live music. “We’ve made that a family night,” said Strueby, “so bring your kids and teach them how to old-time dance to old-time music.” Music is provided by Strueby’s own band, a two-person organ ensemble.

The family and socialization aspects of Danceland are enhanced by the fact that all bands playing there are asked not to have the volume too high. “It’s a big selling feature for us and for the people that come – they do not want it too loud. They want to visit. It’s what I call social dancing. They want to talk to whoever’s sitting at the table,” said Strueby. But even without excessive volume, everyone in the building is able to enjoy the music because of Danceland’s special characteristics. “The band doesn’t have to turn up their volume because it carries so well in here — it usually doesn’t matter where you are on the dancefloor, it’s all the same,” Strueby said. “The acoustics are the best.” Sounds are transmitted effectively throughout Danceland for several reasons: “One is the height of the ceiling — it’s about 35 feet high; everything is wood, and wood is a very good conductor of sound; open beams – they are not laminated so the sound can carry through; and the shape of the dome.” But the acoustics are not what have made Danceland famous – the venue is known around the world for its unique dancefloor, which has been designed to absorb some of the impact of dancers’ feet, allowing even 80-yearolds to dance the night away without becoming fatigued. Dancers effortlessly glide across the 5,000-square-foot hardwood floor, while the secret lies hidden below — a cushion of horsehair that reduces the impact of every step. “The floor is about two feet deep with the maple flooring on top. In that two-foot construction, there are about three levels of beams,

and the horsehair is underneath the beams,” said Strueby. “It’s what I call ‘ropes’ of horsetail. It’s only the horsetail; not the mane — the mane is too fine. It was machine-twisted, about eight inches in diameter, and then wrapped in burlap and tightly wound. It’s about 15-foot ropes of horsetail, and they put that under the beam, one right after the other – continuous. That two-foot system is locked in so nothing can get into that area. There are no elements like moisture or sunlight, no rodents or anything. We found a little observation hole where we stuck a camera in and took pictures and the beams look like new.” She said the horsehair has lasted through decades of impact because it has its own protection from severe impact. “I believe there are what we call ‘stops,’ so the beam will only go down so far and then come back up again. Therefore, your horsetail is not compressed. It’s still in that roll that they put it in.” Even the stage at Danceland has been designed for an optimal dance-band experience. It still remains as it was originally constructed in 1928 — on two levels so that the drummer at the back of the stage is elevated eight inches above the rest of the band. While the structure was designed to enhance the experience of dancing to the sounds of the big bands that were popular at the time it was built, music of any genre is enriched. Today, Danceland is a popular venue for bands that offer an array of music, including country rock,’50s to ‘70s rock and roll, polka, old-time dance music and gospel. Last year, for instance, one rock and roll band that was popular in the ‘60s and ‘70s attracted about 500 people to Danceland. With admission prices that range from $15 to $26 for a night of dancing to live music, it’s easy to see why Danceland remains popular so many decades after it was built. Strueby said, “This is four hours of dancing. We give them their money’s worth.”

Window

past into the

An iconic piece of history came to Watrous, literally, in pieces. Soon after European settlers began arriving in the area in the early 1900s, the All Saints Anglican Church was established in Watrous in 1910. The first vicar, Rev. King, was given a stained glass window to bring with when he came from England. The window, called the Enthronement of Christ, is actually several window panels with

Christ shown on the middle panel flanked by panels depicting saints Peter and Paul. It is said to be an excellent example of English neomedieval stained glass with colours of blue, purple, red, green and yellow. As many of the techniques to produce those colours have been lost over the centuries, the window truly is a rarity. Originally placed in the Church of St. John the Baptist in Wiltshire, England, it dates from the 1500s. At one point, it was removed from the church and buried to protect it from Puri-

tan vandalism. It was replaced after the Restoration, only to make way for a newer window. When Rev. King left England to lead his new church in Watrous, he brought the window with him. But, such fragile items don’t travel well even in modern times. To protect the historic window, it was dismantled into 2,000 pieces to make the trip before being lovingly restored and installed in the new church thousands of miles away. “It’s a one-of-a-kind,” says Brendan Manz, community development officer with the Town of Watrous. Just like Watrous itself!

WATROUS & MANITOU BEACH

Potash helps grow diverse economy CAROL TODD | POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

The many natural attractions of the WatrousManitou area make tourism one of the region’s main economic drivers. But, while the tourism industry brings in about $20 million annually, there is a range of economic activity in this part of Saskatchewan, including potash mining, agriculture and small business. SUPPLIED PHOTO

While the healing waters of Little Lake Manitou nurture its thriving tourism industry, the Watrous area’s central location, varied landscape and modern infrastructure support a range of economic activity. From its central location, half-way between the Alberta and Manitoba borders and perched between the grasslands to the south and the forests of the North, Watrous is a natural transportation hub, as well as an attractive destination for people looking to relocate or even just visit. Less than a two-hour drive from the major urban centres of Saskatoon and Regina, Watrous is also on the Canadian National (CN) railway main line and is also served by the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) bus line and is part of the DHL express delivery network. The combination makes Watrous and area not only attractive, but easy to get to, and economical to move goods from. With a full range of infrastructure and services and a population of about 2,000, Watrous is a dynamic, fully-serviced community with big city amenities mixed with small-town quality of life. It has everything businesses, individuals and families may need, including a recently completed water treatment facility, a low crime rate, a hospital and schools, including the Carlton Trail Regional College. “Our schools are very healthy and growing and there are a lot of recreation facilities,” says Brendan Manz, economic development officer with the Town of Watrous. “It’s a great quality of life that we can offer,” he says. Those recreation facilities include an outdoor Olympic-sized swimming pool, shale ball diamonds, golf course, curling and hockey rinks and, of course, the many attractions of Manitou and District Regional Park and the much lauded healing waters of Little Lake Manitou. Visitors who come to the area can enjoy a wide range of accommodation options, from hotels and motels to bed-andbreakfasts and camping. There are also corporate meeting spaces and conference facilities. And, come they do, with an estimated 200,000 people visiting the area each year and tourism bringing in about $20 million annually. Manz says the area’s economic strength comes from its diversity. “We’re not just reliant on one thing,” he says, listing what he calls

the “four pillars” of the economy — potash, agriculture, tourism and small business. Like much of Saskatchewan, agriculture continues to be one of the major elements of the area’s economy and it boasts a diverse agricultural base, with both grain, mixed farming and livestock operations. The livestock enterprises vary from those using pasture and marginal land, to intensive dairy and hog operations. Watrous is close to an ethanol plant, with seed growers, seed cleaning plants, and pesticide and fertilizer suppliers nearby. The farm equipment dealers there service and sell most of the major lines of machinery available on the market. Grain handling facilities and input suppliers serve area producers. “We’re a large agricultural centre with large grain companies and we get people that come in to load grain or buy equipment,” Manz says. The potash industry is also helping to grow the area economy. Saskatchewan boasts some of the world’s richest deposits of potash, and much of it comes from the Watrous/Lanigan area. There are currently three potash mines within commuting distance of Watrous, including Mosaic Potash Colonsay and the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan’s Allan and Lanigan facilities. A fourth mine is being constructed near Janzen by BHP Billiton. “We’re kind of in the middle of the potash belt,” says Manz. “When the BHP Billiton mine comes on line, we’ll have four potash mines within about a 75 km radius of us. They employ a significant amount of people,” he says. Watrous and Manitou Beach are also home to approximately 200 businesses, ranging from home-based enterprises to Mainline Motors, Saskatchewan’s largest GM dealership, which stocks between 700 and 800 vehicles at any given time. Plans are underway to revitalize the downtown to make it even more attractive for businesses and those needing their services. Watrous is working hard to attract people to, not only come visit, but to stay and become a part of the community. A new water treatment facility was recently completed and the town boasts a new 40-bed, long-term care facility as part of its integrated health care hospital. Manz says that increasing numbers of people are recognizing the area’s broad appeal, pointing out that 17 per cent of the population is under the age of 12. “We’re seeing a lot of young families moving to the community and that’s a great thing for the future of our community,” he says. “You can get everything you need or want,” says Manz. With numerous attractions for visitors, and a full range of services for residents, the Watrous area does, indeed, have everything.

WATROUS & MANITOU BEACH

Artistic spirit alive

in Watrous and Manitou Beach ANDREW LIVINGSTONE POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

From the humble communities of Watrous and Manitou Beach springs a mighty artistic spirit. Virtuosos of many media and forms call the area home, and they attract both fellow artists and admirers to enjoy, learn, and teach the arts and share in the friendship fostered by creative expression. Sarah McKen, the president of the Association of Manitou Arts and Culture (AMAC), was one artist who felt the pull of Manitou Beach, and she still finds the spirit of the area exciting. “It’s interesting how the healing waters and the fact that it’s a get-away for people to rejuvenate fits very well with the creative aspects of the visual and creative arts,” she said. “It creates a community, an atmosphere, where taking time for the good things in life is a priority.” Toni Ambrose has observed the community for even longer, and, as the chair of visual arts for AMAC’s sister organization the Watrous Area Arts Council (WAAC), she has had the opportunity to help cultivate the arts in the area. “It’s always been a good area for art,” she said. “It’s really increasing. There’s always something happening now.” THE GALLERY ON 3RD The influx of new artistic talent is evident at the Gallery on 3rd, a hub of the local arts community, a showcase of visual arts, and WAAC’s base of operations. After working out of the location for nine years, WAAC has begun to offer workshops in various visual artistic media, such as paint, pencil and clay, and has even dabbled in writing instruction. In August, the gallery will host a summer art camp for children.

To the more established artists in WAAC, the response from newcomers to the gallery has been gratifying. “Especially having these workshops, we’re bringing people out of the woodwork that we didn’t realize were interested in drawing and painting,” said Ambrose, and the organization intends to maintain that degree of interest. “To get them going is fun. Now that they’ve had that start, we know that we have to keep going with more classes this coming winter.” As a gallery, the facility also attracts and displays art from the area and across the country, and it even acts as a museum for the community when the Watrous and Manitou Historical Group arranges for viewings of historical photos in the main show space. In the smaller gift shop, local artists have a platform from which they can sell their work year-round and fund their continued pursuit of aesthetic excellence. SPIRIT OF MANITOU STUDIO TRAIL On the weekend of July 9 and 10, the Gallery on 3rd will be an integral stop in the ninth annual Spirit of Manitou Studio Trail, a self-guided tour through the studios and galleries of 12 different artists in the region. “They’re artists that live in the area and can be contacted yearround, but, on that weekend, all of them are in their studios and welcoming guests, so it becomes an exciting adventure to go between all the different locations,” said McKen. “It goes from Manitou Beach, through Watrous, some farm sites, and then up to Meacham.” Little Manitou Art Gallery, the studio that McKen opened with her partner, the carver Clayton Cave, will itself be a stop in the tour, but McKen emphasises that sculpture will not be the only medium on

display for visitors. “We have everyone from photographers, carvers, oil painters, acrylic murals, and myself (a bronze caster), so there’s quite a variety,” she said. “What they have in common is it’s all the visual arts.” McKen welcomes the opportunity to touch base with both fans and practitioners of the arts. “Artists often end up working in isolation,” she said. “We get in our studios and we enjoy our focus in making our art, and we can put it in galleries, but that opportunity to actually interact with the public and get that feedback and one-on-one connection, it is really energising. This is an opportunity to have that experience for a lot of artists that are otherwise isolated.” ARTISTIC CREATION EXPO From Aug. 1 to 14, the focus will shift back to Manitou Beach for its upcoming Artistic Creation Expo, though Watrous’ Gallery on 3rd will still have a role to play. As an artistic symposium, the expo is intended to nourish the artistic community while providing the general public with the opportunity to see how art is produced. The event’s primary tier will bring five professional artists into Manitou Beach to spend 14 days constructing large sculptures in the open air. “They’ll work in welded steel, concrete, wood — a variety of different materials,” said McKen, who is organizing the event. “After that time, their artwork will stay in the community for two years and be displayed on street corners.” Those grander monuments generated by Tier One will be supplemented by work from artists attending on a more casual basis. “Tier Two is a come-and-go drop-in for artists to do smaller work — if they want to pack up their tool box and come for a day or for a few days

Watrous-Manitou is home to a strong and vibrant artistic community. In addition to the area’s year-round venues that display local artists’ and artisans’ works, there will be two major events this summer: the Spirit of Manitou Studio Trail and the Artistic Creation Expo. SUPPLIED PHOTO

— and they will be working on site, and the community is again invited to come and see how the art’s developed.” Both Tier One and Two artists may provide art for display in the Gallery on 3rd and sell their pieces at booths and work sites in Manitou Beach. Tier Three of the expo will provide structured instruction for those who are intrigued by the skills on display. “We’ll have professional artists providing public workshops about different techniques,”McKen said. “That is funded through our Creative Initiatives Fund.” Such educational elements highlight the cooperative nature of the event. “It’s not a competition, which is an exciting aspect,” said McKen. “It’s much more of a collaboration

and a community, which creates a very nice atmosphere for helping and learning.” That atmosphere will enrich artists and tourists alike. “For the artists, it’s a supportive environment for them to work large, and it’s like going to a course: you get to do your own thing and experiment right beside somebody else that may have already worked through another art that’s of that technique,” she said. “For the general populations, tourists and residents here, it is a chance to really see the art being created and get to know the process, and understand the skills that are involved, the dedication and why art is worth what artists should be paid.”

Manitou Springs Hotel and Mineral Spa A European experience in the middle of the Prairies MICHELLE TYNDALL | POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

For 25 years, the Manitou Springs Hotel and Mineral Spa has been treating Saskatchewan residents and visitors from around the world to the elegance of a European-style spa — in the middle of the Canadian Prairies. “The spa was built in 1987 and, after an overwhelming initial response and large attendance numbers, an immediate need for an adjoining hotel was realized. Hotel planning and construction began shortly after the spa opened, and Manitou Springs Hotel was officially open for business in 1991,” said Dwight Hayter, CEO and general manager of the Manitou Springs Hotel and Mineral Spa. The Manitou Springs Hotel and Mineral Spa was voted Tourism Saskatchewan’s Business of the Year in 2014, and the Mineral Spa was ranked the number one spa in Saskatchewan in 2015. “The most unique feature of our resort is the highly mineralized and therapeutic water in the indoor pool. Our salt and mineral content is so high in our pool, that people float in the water and do not sink,” said Hayter. The hotel offers complete massage and esthetics sessions, using the same minerals found in the water. The mineral spa is the largest one in Canada and allows visitors to enjoy the waters of Little Manitou Lake throughout the year while they indulge in the hotel’s services. The spa has an added bonus for some visitors. “Although we see more families with small children visit us every year, our main clientele continues to be people over the age of 55 years. The primary reason for this is due to the fact that our therapeutic mineral water helps so many people with their ailments. People who have arthritis benefit the most from our water, due to the “zero gravity” effect on their muscles and joints while they are swimming. The buoyancy allows them to become more mobile in the water than they

usually are on land, and therefore they feel better when they come out of the water than when they went in, not to mention how relaxed they feel due to the four different temperatures of the pool,” said Hayter. Suites in the hotel overlook Lake Manitou, as does its restaurant, aptly named Water’s Edge. Lighter fare is also available at the Water Crest Café. “We are continuing to improve upon our dining room meal variety, and have implemented some weekly features that are sure to impress anyone who chooses to dine with us while overlooking beautiful Little Manitou Lake. On Mexican Mondays, our guests will have a choice of soft tacos or spicy enchiladas. On Wednesdays, we will be featuring sushi and our guests will have a choice of dynamite or California rolls, accompanied by battered green beans with a creamy Greek dip,” said Hayter. “Our resort is a good fit for our province, as our central location allows most people within the province to travel a short distance to reach us. This lends itself well to our resort becoming a very popular meeting and convention destination, as we can offer three different sizes of meeting rooms, as well as a large outdoor patio, along with great banquet food, for almost any kind of gathering,” said Hayter. “Why would you not stay at a truly unique resort that offers an indoor mineral pool that you can float in and relax, your choice of 102 hotel rooms, free parking and Wi-Fi, a fabulous dining room, massage and esthetic services, complimentary hot breakfast buffet with your room, a poolside café, and a large gift shop, all located across the road from a beautiful lake?” said Hayter. For more information, visit the hotel website at https://reservations.manitousprings.ca/ or see more local attractions at WatrousManitou. com.

Camp Easter Seal meets campers’ diverse needs MICHELLE TYNDALL | POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

For more than 60 years, Camp Easter Seal, located near Watrous at the west end of Manitou Beach, has provided a camping program for children and adults who, due to disabilities, are unable to attend other camps. “We have access to the picturesque scene of Little Manitou and the beautiful sunset as well as the waterfront for our water activities. The community is also very accepting of our busy campers and staff,” said Su Huynh, manager of Camp Easter Seal. The original building was a work project during the Great Depression and became an upscale resort in the 1930s. The Saskatchewan Abilities Council purchased the property in the 1950s and since then has run a permanent summer camp for its unique campers. Every summer, Camp Easter Seal opens up to host approximately 700 campers from ages 6 to 80, and provides each and every one with a fun and barrier-free camping experience. Camp Easter Seal boasts amazing landscapes, from our “living skies” to the picturesque shores of Little Manitou Lake, while at the same time offering the only fully wheelchair-accessible camping facility in Saskatchewan, along with programs designed to meet campers’ special requirements and provide a fun experience for all. “Because we are the only 100 per cent wheelchair-accessible camping facility, we accept campers who have intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities or medical conditions that may prevent them from attending other camps in Saskatchewan. We have also recently opened up our criteria to include youth campers with high functioning autism,” said Huynh. Camp Easter Seal provides campers with many of the facilities you would expect from any summer camp, such as an arts and crafts centre, a tenting area and a recreation centre. There are 14 cabins, a dining hall and an outdoor amphitheatre. In addition to these camping staples, there is also a heated indoor swimming pool, a medical cabin, an indoor sports facility, commercial-grade kitchen and laundry facilities, and a wheelchair-accessible playground. The design of the campground allows Camp Easter Seal to provide campers with a wide variety of activities from swimming and boating to arts and crafts and horseback riding, along with those traditional camp

favourites: cook-outs, campfires and singalongs. At the same time, all of the activities have been designed to meet the abilities of the campers while providing a rich recreational experience for them all summer long. “We have five program areas at Camp Easter Seal: swimming, pontoon boat rides and adaptive waterskiing are part of our waterfront area, and then we have horseback riding, arts and crafts, sports, and out tripping. We try to provide similar activities to any other camp in Saskatchewan but we adapt it to our campers’ abilities. Our camps are six days long, including overnight stays, and are categorized according to campers age and abilities as well as their intellectual and physical disabilities so our programs can match,” said Huynh. Camp Easter Seal works to ensure that all the visitors get to spend their summer creating memories that will last a lifetime — along with all the fun activities, the camp ensures the highest standard of care for all of their campers, provided by trained camp counsellors and full-time medical staff available to meet the diverse needs of all of the campers. Naturally, such a unique program creates great demand, and Camp Easter Seal generates revenue through fees and facility rentals — the site is offered to other non-profit groups during the off-season — and receives grants and sponsorships to provide as many campers as possible with a safe and fun summer experience. The camp also relies extensively on volunteers and donations to maintain its yearly operations. The cost per camper per week is approximately $1,500. “We welcome volunteers, either pre- or post-camp, to help with maintenance tasks, or during the summer in various departments, in the cabin with our campers or in the kitchen helping cook meals. Donations are always welcome as we need a lot of supplies to keep our campers happy and entertained. For both volunteer and donation information, I can be contacted specifically as we do have a camp wish list,” said Huynh. For more information on this one-of-a-kind camp, how to become a volunteer or where to send your donation, contact Camp Easter Seal by email at campeasterseal@abilitiescouncil. sk.ca, phone Huynh at 306- 653-1694 or visit the Saskatchewan Abilities Council website at www.abilitiescouncil.sk.ca.

WATROUS & MANITOU BEACH

The Watrous Fun Run Show ‘n’ Shine a family event MICHELE TYNDALL | POSTMEDIA CONTENT WORKS

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, The Watrous Fun Run Show ‘n’ Shine is one of the largest car shows in rural Saskatchewan. What is now the longest running event of its type started out as a simple idea on how to increase tourism in the area. On July 23, as it has since its inception, the Watrous Fun Run Show ‘n’ Shine will be presented on Main Street in Watrous. Car enthusiasts from across Western Canada and the United States will enjoy a day showing off their classic, custom and specialty-built cars, antique tractors, trucks, motorcycles and race cars. Then, at the end of the day, these unique vehicles will cruise up the highway amidst a sea of spectators to Manitou Beach and the presenters will gather at a banquet where awards for the top vehicles will be handed out. The Watrous and District Chamber of Commerce worked together with the Saskatoon Coachmen Car Club to create the event, and the first show was held in 1992. When the Coachmen moved on to hosting their own event in 1997, the work that they had done in Watrous allowed the Watrous Fun Run Show ‘n’ Shine to continue to grow and it is now it is considered one of the best events on the Show ‘n’ Shine circuit in the province. While the Watrous Fun Run Show ‘n’ Shine might have started out as a bit of a novelty as many of the car shows did at that time, it is now considered an established yearly tourist attraction and promotes not just fantastic cars and car collecting, but also the Watrous-Manitou Lake region and all of its facilities, and of course, the great people living in this community. As it has grown in popularity and size, the Watrous Fun Run Show ‘n’ Shine has also expanded to include many free events for the whole family, making the event a summer must

for everyone from toddlers to diehard car fans. “What has specifically led to the growth and popularity of the show is that it is now a family event with plenty to do for everyone. We also have a great location with many facilities, like the spa, golf courses, the drive-in and the beach,” said Jason Lindgren, event co-ordinator. Along with a wide array of slick racers and monster trucks, Main Street will be boasting plenty of other attractions too. The day starts with an early morning pancake breakfast, and then the fun continues with face painting throughout the day, entertainment from Beeper the Clown, the Sask Agility Dogs and Professor Fun Stuff, along with, of course, the many beautiful cars and trucks to

view. All the presenters are happy to talk about their vehicles and tell their informative and often entertaining histories. Kevin Therris and Prairieland Motorsports will also be there, presenting the Boss Blue Tractor and their Bio Diesel Jet Car in Racing Against Drugs, an engaging program to highlight the family as a team in the fight against drugs and drug abuse. There will be plenty to eat and drink during the event, with refreshments available all day at the Participants Pit Stop on Main Street, as well as at the shops and restaurants throughout Watrous. “The town is so welcoming and

on’t be deceived by its rural location. John’s Plate Family Dining, 212 First Ave. W., is a contemporary restaurant that cooks up big-city flavours. Since 2008, John and Marla Koupantsis have been providing exquisite meals from a menu that’s packed with everyone’s favourite foods.

This is no ordinary, small town, deep-fried fare. For John, it is all about quality and adding a personal touch to every order. That’s why the burgers are homemade, the steaks are always fresh — never frozen — and the gourmet pastas are prepared to your specifications.

THE MOST POPULAR BURGER IN WATROUS...

THE JOHN’S BURGER!

“People have noticed that the meals we offer are different,” said John. “They realize the effort that we put into our menu. For example, we have several chicken and seafood options, because we know people are eating healthier. And, we know the town is enjoying the food, because we always hear good things about what we’re doing — and they tell other people, too.” The most popular lunch item is the steak sandwich. All of John’s steaks are Canadian AAA and aged over 30 days to ensure tenderness. As well, a daily lunchtime feature menu changes with the seasons. For supper, again the steak is a favourite. The pasta dishes are popular, too, because of the great selection and because you can customize your order. If it’s pizza that you crave, try one of John’s Gourmet Pizzas. You’ll enjoy lots of toppings and a great taste that will be sure to satisfy your appetite. You’ll understand why they were named Watrous’s Best Pizza by Trip Advisor. Save lots of room for dessert though; there’s an awesome selection of tasty treats. John recommends the brownie plate — Marla’s specialty!
