always lives up to its name!
BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG
With its 55th show approaching, Bridal Spectacular is Saskatoon’s longest-running and most popular wedding showcase. The semi-annual event, organized by She Modelling, returns to TCU Place, Sunday, September 17 from 12:30 to 5 p.m. She Modelling owner Mary Obrodovich is devoted to ensuring the Bridal Spectacular show lives up to its name. She is always on the hunt to bring the “latest and greatest” wedding products and services to Saskatchewan brides and grooms. Bridal Spectacular is an ideal opportunity for wedding couples to connect with some of the city’s most established wedding vendors. “Many of these companies have been in every Bridal Spectacular show from day one. These companies offer wedding couples proven, trustworthy service, based on years of dependable experience,” says Obrodovich. “By attending Bridal Spectacular, you can get to meet and talk with these wedding experts in person. You can see and touch their products in person, which you can’t do if you’re only shopping online.” Obrodovich contends that brides who restrict their wedding planning to surfing online are really cheating themselves out of some of the joy of being a bride-to-be. “A big part of the excitement of being a bride should be the fun of getting together

Memorable weddings? It’s all about the food!
BY HILARY KLASSEN PHOTOS COURTESY OF D’REENS CATERING
For many of us, our fondest memories revolve around food – a certain fabulous restaurant we discovered while on an exotic vacation and the unforgettable time we had there. Increasingly, brides and grooms are looking to make their weddings memorable through food. While standard fare is still a good option, what about all the other options? D’reen from D’reen’s Catering and Kitchen Socials says more couples are getting creative with their weddings and choosing food that reflects who they are. “These days it’s less about the big piece of meat on the plate, although there’s nothing wrong with that,” says D’reen. “Today, many couples want something different for their wedding menu, and they want it to be very, very memorable.” D’reen says people remember three things from a wedding: how beautiful the bride was, whether the food was any good and if the music sucked. Good food is her specialty. After 28 years of catering experience, D’reen gets a lot of calls from couples

looking for something a little bit different. That quest includes the venue, which in turn influences the menu. She’s seeing a move away from the traditional hotel or hall as a venue. “People are looking for a different ambience. I’ve done weddings at the Roxy Theatre, Village Guitar & Amp, the stage of the Persephone Theatre, the Farmer’s Mar-
ket, the Forestry Farm, even Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, after the show wraps up.” D’reen has catered weddings with diverse themes like a carnival, an English picnic, food trucks and ethnic themes. Recently, she enjoyed preparing a completely vegetarian menu featuring a falafel bar, poutine, a veggie dipping station and more. Poutine is incredibly popular, not only as part of the main fare but also for the midnight lunch. “People are going away from the cold-cuts and buns and going for a much more interesting midnight lunch with things like sliders, poutine, veggie trays, fruit trays and cheese trays, and staying away from the ‘mystery meats’.” A wedding earlier this year called for pub food. “This couple met in a bar so they wanted everything straight out of the bar – pub food like wings, ribs and poutine.” Also exciting was a food truck-style reception D’reen did. “We had different

From tropical sand castles to centuries-old castles in Ireland…
Couples are searching for
D
wedding destinations BY WENDY LIVINGSTONE
Destination weddings: for many couples, they offer the best of all worlds. By saying their vows at a beautiful vacation site, a bride and groom can combine their wedding and honeymoon, thus allowing more time and money in the budget for both experiences. Couples can “elope” and leave behind the pressure of family and friends that want to have input in planning the wedding, while still permitting close family and friends to go along and celebrate the occasion. And, by collaborating with a consultant at the destination, much of the preparation work can be eliminated. “It’s the best way to enjoy your wedding,” says Czarina Sastaunik, Saskatoon Uniglobe’s leisure travel manager. Sastaunik, who chose to celebrate her marriage in the Mayan Riviera six years ago, says that, when using the services of a wedding planner at the destination, it is a very carefree, uncomplicated experience. “It’s honestly the easiest way to get away with your friends and family, have a great time at a wonderful resort, and it’s not a complicated thing whatsoever.” It is not just tropical resorts, however, that

are tempting today’s couples to leave their home towns to tie the knot. “A lot of people are thinking outside the box,” says Sastaunik. “They are looking for different venues, different backdrops for a wedding.” While many are venturing to European destinations, such as castles in Ireland or beaches on the Italian Riviera to say, “I do,” others are choosing to stay a little closer to home. U.S. locales, such as Las Vegas and New York, are also becoming popular. And although the value of the Canadian dollar has recently increased, some couples are choosing romantic Canadian spots, such as Victoria, Banff, Niagara Falls, Quebec City and Halifax to protect themselves from currency fluctuations. Wherever the wedding takes place, there are certain steps that newlyweds-to-be should take to ensure that the event goes off without complications. First, the couple should determine their budget. “Figure out how much you are willing to spend and how much you are willing to ask your family and friends to spend,” says Sastaunik. “And be prepared that not everyone is going come. If it’s imperative

that you have, say, your grandparents at your wedding, remember that [having to travel] might cause them not to come.” She recommends that couples begin the process by visiting their travel agent at least a year before the big date. “The sooner the better,” she says. “It gives them more time to plan and gives friends and family time to save for the trip. And, by coming in earlier, they can secure better prices.” She adds that payment plans can be set up at that time for the wedding couple and their guests. Factors that may influence the decision on where to have the wedding include the time of year (and the possible weather implications of such), the cost, local food choices and, most importantly, where the bride and groom have envisioned their dream wedding. Some countries have strict laws regarding

legal weddings and may require the couple to be present up to 72 hours before the ceremony. Medical exams may also be required. “Some countries have issues with those who have been divorced and are looking for a legal ceremony. They will need proof of divorce, and sometimes may need documents transcribed into the official language,” says Sastaunik. To prevent these difficulties, she recommends that couples do as she did, and have a symbolic ceremony at the destination and a legal ceremony at home. “We visited the Justice of the Peace (JP) after our actual wedding at the destination and brought along friends and family who couldn’t come, making it a little more special for them.” Once the destination has been determined, the couple begins planning (via email or telephone) with a consultant at the site. “We put them in touch almost immediately, securing the wedding date, the venue, the type of ceremony and making sure there is a priest or JP available for that day,” says Sastaunik. She gives one last important piece of advice: “They need to be able to go with the flow – although it’s a very easy process to, say, book a week in Mexico, there still can be changes with flight schedules. Perhaps the venue is changed at the last minute; and rain, of course, is an issue. But, above all else, don’t let minor snags, like last-minute menu changes, ruin your big day. Instead, adopt a laid-back island mentality and enjoy your wedding to the fullest extent possible.” She added, “What’s undeniable is that they are going to have a unique experience whether it’s a beach wedding, or a Las Vegas wedding, because this is going to be outside of the box.”

Naturally, every bride dazzles. It’s what they do best! But brides gain extra sparkle by choosing beautifully suited jewellery to set off their dream wedding gown. Many brides look to Hillberg & Berk for inspiration. The Saskatchewan-based jewellery company recently gained national attention for their winning bid to design a second brooch for the Queen. Their truly Canadian Sapphire Jubilee Snowflake Brooch was presented to Her Majesty on July 19 by governor general, David Johnston, at a Canada 150 bash in London. Rachel Mielke, owner of Hillberg & Berk, says the Government of Canada invited them,

along with a number of other jewellery companies across Canada, to submit proposals for the piece. The incredible brooch features 48 Canadian sapphires and more than 400 diamonds, set in Canadian white gold. A team of five people at the company designed it over eight months. “It was very exciting for us!” Mielke said the first time the government commissioned them to create a brooch for the Queen felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity. “The fact that it happened again was truly incredible and we’re just so thrilled and humbled.” The brooch was selected through a blind judging process based
solely on design. Hillberg & Berk’s elegant bridal line could easily make any bride feel like royalty. “The cool thing about your wedding day is it really reflects your individual style, so within our bridal selection we’ve created a really wide range,” she says. Crystallized statement necklaces will appeal to glam or classic brides while the simplicity of bohemian pieces are attractive to others. “Our simple pearl necklaces and simple pearl bracelets are very, very understated delicate pieces that might be more for a country chic or a bohemian bride. “Every single bride has her own vision for her wedding, so we wanted to have a variety of pieces that would suit a number of different tastes and wedding dresses and wedding styles.” Mielke says brides are looking for interesting earrings, like a newly released design in silver, rose gold and gold that has that ‘chandelier feeling’. The front to back design allows the earrings to be worn in different ways - as a simple crystal stud, or with the backing added to create a more elaborate chandelier look for the wedding day. A lot of brides opt for chandelier earrings and stacked bracelets, but some really want to have an amazing necklace they can wear. Another trend they’re seeing is that brides want to ‘play with’ their jewelry. Some brides change their jewellery from the ceremony to the reception. A back necklace, for example, can be worn three different ways – long or shortened to two other lengths. Another piece might be worn as a necklace for part of the wedding and as a bracelet later. “Brides want the ability to customize things so we’ve created pieces that you can specifically wear different ways and style different ways, depending on what your dress looks like.” Brides also want stunning jewellery on their wedding that they can wear after as well. Hillberg & Berk has built that versatility into their bridal line. A fantastic new design recently launched is Esme earrings, with a Swarovski crystal centre and a bloom of crystals all the way around the centre. “You can wear these earrings on your wedding day or you could put your sparkle ball in and wear them with your sparkle ball. Couples are more culturally diverse than ever before. Engaged couples are embracing that diversity by incorporating elements of their heritage into their ceremonies. Global-infused details are a growing trend in ceremonies and receptions. Multicultural touches can help make weddings unique. tRAdItIONAL dRESS With many countries embracing the tradition of wearing “wedding white,” couples are once again tapping into ethnic dress to add that wow factor to their weddings. Fashion can impart elements that borrow from ancestral homelands and tried-andtrue wedding tradition. Distinct attire, such as sarees, kimonos, khmers, and kilts, may be center stage at ceremonies and receptions. Some couples opt to have a change of clothes so they can wear traditional dress for the ceremony and wedding gowns and tuxedos for the reception.

EtHNIC ENtERtAINMENt In addition to a band or DJ, couples may want to incorporate some sort of ethnic entertainment into the festivities. Caribbean couples may want a steel drum band. Japanese weddings may be enhanced with the addition of a Taiko group that showcases the art of ensemble drumming. Although bagpipes are often associated with Irish or Scottish heritage, they’re included in folk music from different regions of Europe, Africa and the Persian Gulf as well. MULtICULtURAL dANCE Some of the most entertaining parts of a wedding involve dancing. With the right music and a few cocktails, guests’ inhibitions may relax. Couples can even increase the fun factor by incorporating ethnic dance customs and music into their playlists. If budget allows, hire a dance troupe to guide guests on the proper steps. Otherwise,
ask the band or DJ to play the music that inspires the tarantella, salsa or Bollywood moves and learn as you go. EtHNIC CUISINE According to New Jersey Bride magazine, today’s millennials have long been exposed to multicultural cuisine and have exotic palates. Food can reflect the couple’s culture or simply harken to cuisine they enjoy the most. The New York Times predicted that food inspired by Africa and the Philippines is hot for 2017, so couples may want to opt for flavours from these areas of the world. When exotic offerings are presented, it can be a good idea to also have some traditional wedding foods so less adventurous guests have options. Couples planning to incorporate multicultural elements into their weddings will need to find a ceremony and reception site that can accommodate those needs. (MNS)

Wedding website
dO’S ANd dON’tS
Technology continues to infiltrate all areas of life. So it should come as no surprise that apps and digital organization play a prominent role in many couples’ weddings. Couples may now feel it is necessary to design a wedding website to keep their guests up-to-date. Though they’re useful when planning a wedding, websites are not a must-have, according to bridal etiquette experts. However, those who choose to delve into the world of wedding websites can keep these pointers in mind when navigating. dO use the wedding website as a central hub for putting pertinent information about the wedding that may not be covered on invitations or savethe-date cards. dON’t ignore the potential for identity theft and privacy. Wedding websites can put quite a deal of personal information out for public consumption. Not only will the website advertise when the wedding takes place (when your home and the homes of all your guests will be empty), but also it could include birthdays, maiden names, and

other information that would normally be more difficult to track down. dO use a wedding website provider that gives you the option to password protect your website. Urge guests not to share this protected information with others. dON’t caption engagement photos, bachelorette party photos and more with dates and names on the wedding website and on other social media. dO skip the wedding website if you are strongly opposed to it. When properly composed, a wedding invitation will convey all the pertinent details. A group email or phone calls can alert guests to any changes after the fact. dON’t forget to link to gift registries. dO use the wedding website to collect responses and then make a table seating arrangement online. This will help you stay more organized and streamlined. Wedding websites are yet another tool couples can use to stay organized as they plan their weddings.(MNS)
