There’s no denying that Mahalia Barnes, like the majority of the Barnes clan, has one hell of a set of pipes - a fact that is rammed home on this powerful homage to 1970s soul and funk powerhouse and wife of Miles Davis, Betty Davis. Barnes and her band the Soul Mates, have teamed up with no fooling blues guitar powerhouse Joe Bonnamassa to produced an album that is literally dripping with raw passion feeling and power. Betty Davis’s unique story is still fairly unknown. She married Miles Davis in the late ‘60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix. Later, she released three genre-busting albums, 1973’s self-titled debut, 1974’s They Say I’m Different and 1975’s Nasty Gal.

Okay funksters, it’s time to board the Mothership for a night of intergalactic sonic mayhem because George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic are coming to town. Known both here and in the outer reaches of the universe for his outlandish dress sense, technicolour dreads and a virtuosic mastery of all things funky, Dr George Clinton is one of the most sampled musicians on the planet and has worked with the likes of Tupac, Primal Scream, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Outkast, Wu Tang Clan and Carlos Santana to name a few. With such mind-bending hits as Atomic Dog, One Nation Under a Groove, We Want The Funk and Mothership Connection, Clinton and his collective were recognised when 16 of the P-Funk Collective (the largest group ever) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. In the words of George Clinton himself, this show is going to “tear the roof off the sucker”.
Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr star as idiots who dress up as cops for a masquerade party they mistake for a fancy dress party and involve themselves in high-jinx like buying a used cop car on eBay and before you can say “you have the right not to buy a ticket to this yawnfest” they have run afoul of Russian mobsters. There is chemistry between the leads, but that’s where the compliments end.

Horrorshow go acoustic While acoustic and hip hop are two phrases you don’t hear together often, Sydney duo Horrorshow are doing their best to redress the balance with a run of acoustic shows that will see them hit Newcastle this weekend. After selling out acoustic shows in Sydney and Brisbane, it was only a matter of time before they took their unplugged show on the road, but as MC Solo told TE, this format is one that Horrorshow have been dabbling in since the very beginning. “A lot of people don’t know, but Adit and I have been doing the acoustic thing since we started gigging,” he said. “It always helps that we’ve got a really strong network of really talented muso friends who make the whole thing seem quite easy.
“It would be different if the people around us weren’t so talented and it’s good for us because it challenges myself and Adit to think outside of the box and it really keeps us on our toes.” The tour comes off the back of a pretty hectic couple of years for the duo with their 2013 long player King Amongst Many grabbing a number two slot on the ARIA charts and an Australian Music Prize shortlisting while their other outfit One Day (an Elefant Tracks super collective featuring Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate, Joyride and Jackie Onassis) saw their debut Mainline also climb to number two on the ARIA charts. This gig makes cents If you’ve poked your head into pretty much any venue in or around Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and further up the coast, chances are, you’ve seen cover band stalwarts Loose Change in action. Consisting of Greg Piggott, Rick Manevski and Mick Bendeich, this is one trio that comes with a wealth of experience with each member logging time in such outfits as Under the Influence, Moondog, Bad Penny, Leeroy and the Rats and The Jungle Kings.
Their modus operandi is belting out the rock and roll classics and looking at the songlist that contains the likes of Creedence, Aussie Crawl, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chisel, AC/DC Status Quo and Bachman Turner Overdrive (to name a few), there will be few rock pigs disappointed when these guys hit the stage. Riding a wave of creativity STEPHEN BISSET
W
ith a mammoth 2014 that saw Jeff Martin recording the debut album for his side project Black Diamond Express (featuring Sarah McLeod from the Superjesus and Mick Skelton from the Baby Animals) getting together another side project, Revalator with Skelton, kicking of production duties for Sydney rockers Lepers and Crooks, starting a record label, and dropping his band The Tea Party’s first album in ten years and stunning return to form, The Ocean at the End, it seems the songwriter has hit a bit of a creative purple patch. “You know what they say, ‘no rest for the wicked,” Martin told TE down the line from Byron Bay. “At the moment I feel that I’m in a very creative space so I’m kinda making hay while the sun shines.” To that end, Martin is embarking on a massive solo acoustic tour that will see him hit Lizotte’s later this month - a venue that’s always high on his hit list.
“It sounds corny, but that place is like a home away from home - the sound you can produce in there is really conducive to what I’m doing - it’s just a really great fit.” Speaking of great fits, Martin has built up quite a musical affinity with Sarah McLeod and Mick Skelton of late and he said that it was the pair’s approach to songwriting that resonated so strongly with him. “They’re both just amazing songwriters,” he said. “I’m really excited about Black Diamond Express, because it’s the first time where the onus isn’t completely on me, y’know? With the Tea Party, I’m the main songwriter and producer but here I can just blend into the sonic architecture of it all. “Also, with Revalator, people might already know that Mick Skelton is an amazing drummer, but what they’ll find out is that he is also a great writer and arranger - I call him the mighty arranger.” Given that Martin has been at this music lark for some time now, how does he see himself as evolving as a songwriter?

“I guess, these days, I’m a lot more holistic in my approach,” he said. “Also, with albums like [the Tea Party’s breakthrough record] Edges of Twilight it was all about making these grand, sweeping musical and lyrical statements but I guess, over time, I’ve learned to simplify things to a certain point while still managing to keep it all extremely potent. It is a lifelong process, though.”

fter a stellar comeback run last year, that included a scene-stealing turn at Soundwave, Newcastle’s skankingest outfit The Porkers are hitting the road again for a
few sneaky dates, including one on home soil at the Cambridge. Featuring the same line-up as the 2014 incarnation - Cooper on vocals, Phil “Bigfil” Barnard on sax, Dave Morris on bass, Frank Dasent on trombone, Julian Barker on trumpet, Dave Power on guitar and Scott Chapman on drums and, of course, the ubiquitous mascot Porkman
- Cooper said by the time the Porkers hit the Cambridge stage, the third show on the tour, they would be a well-oiled machine, or something like that. “I don’t know about a well-oiled machine, maybe an oily old machine,” he laughed. “The reunion shows last year were absolutely crazy - especially Soundwave

The Porkers ride again
which was just overwhelming with the amount of support we received. “But those shows were also a bit of a wake-up call in that it isn’t as easy as it used to be - but by the time we’re in Newcastle we should definitely be well and truly in the swing of things.” Anyone who has seen the Porkers in action will know that even on an off night, they were one of the most engaging live bands in Australia - their unpretentious surf/punk/ rockabilly-infused ska mixing perfectly with Cooper’s frenetic stage presence. Starting life in 1987, with the rather salacious name The Pork Hunts, their infectious brand of what Cooper describes as “bastardised ska” quickly captured the hearts of the Australian festival and record-buying public and their brilliant debut long player Grunt propelled them even further into the stratosphere with slots on both the Australian and US Vans Warped tours - playing alongside the likes of Eminem Ice T and Blink 182 - not to mention a career highlight show at Boston’s iconic Middle East Club with ska giants Bim Skala Bim and the Slackers. Cooper, who spent the end of 2014 in the US where he played a string of shows in New York backed by The Paramedics as well as joining the Mighty Mighty Bosstones on stage during a mammoth show in their hometown of Boston, said that while the initial plan was to play the 2014 dates - it seems there might be still some life in the Porkers yet. “ I’d planned that we would have some new material for this tour but, sadly that didn’t eventuate, but I would definitely like to get something new out there, sometime soon.” Catch the Porkers at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, March 21.

W
hen it comes to reunions in the world of hip hop, few have come as highly anticipated as when Jurassic 5 took to the stage again after a six year absence. After breaking up in 2007, following the release of their fourth long player, Feedback, the group reunited in 2013 for a show stealing set at the Coachella Festival and have since gone on to release the first song since the reunion - the barn burning The Way We Do It, featuring production from the late, great Heavy D. Marc 7 told TE , down the line from LA, that after some tentative rehearsals, all concerned felt there was still some unfinished business to be conducted. “Our manager came up with the idea and he got us all together in a Hollywood hotel room to see if we could make it happen,” he said. “We decided that if we were going to do it - it had to be something big and Coachella was the perfect forum. “So, we started rehearsing and straight
away we knew that the vibe was still there and I can’t even tell you about the feeling I had walking onto that stage, man. They even closed down the other stages so everyone could come watch us. It was surreal.” For the uninitiated, Jurassic 5 - aka Marc 7, Akil, Zaakir, Marc 7, DJ Nu-Mark, Charli 2na and Cut Chemist - cut a righteous swathe through the North American hip hop scene with their soulful brand of socially aware hip-hop. They weren’t throwback or old school, but they embodied a nostalgic sound that was also at once fresh and has remained the benchmark for original hip hop ever since. Now, re-energised and reinvigorated, Jurassic 5 are making a welcome return to our shores for the Byron Bay Bluesfest and for a special Newcastle sideshow later this month and Marc 7 said the band have been overwhelmed with the reception they have received since reforming and for The Way We Do It. “Because we’d been out of the game for so long, there were througths floating around like do people still remember who Jurassic 5 are but thankfully there are people who remember and we are just so humbled.”

Beer and a chat with big Merv STEPHEN BISSET
B
eer, cricket and some great food will be the order of the day at The Squire’s Maiden in Honeysuckle when Australian cricketing legend, Merv Hughes teams up with James Squire brewer Josh Staines for a special lunch later this month. While Hughes is well-and-truly in the public eye at the moment thanks to his turn on the hit reality TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, in case you’ve been living under a rock, he was also quite a dab hand at cricket. Hughes was definitely a crowd favourite in his heyday thanks to his lively on-field persona and his imposing run-up and delivery action. While his antics sometimes overshadowed his bowling - he certainly was no slouch in that regard. A right-arm fast bowler, he represented Australia between 1985 and 1994 in 53 Test matches, taking 212 wickets. He played 33 One Day Internationals, taking 38 wickets. He took a hat-trick in a Test against a powerful West Indies team at the WACA in 1988-89, and went on to take 8-87. In 1993, he took 31 wickets in the Ashes series against England.

Swine times with the Pigs STEPHEN BISSET
A
ussie bluegrass champions, the Pigs, have long looked overseas for inspiration for their eclectic roster of reinterpretations of classic tracks and current chart toppers, but this time around, they’re looking a little closer to home for inspiration. Their fourth album Home Brew: 13 Aussie Classics is chock-a-block full of, well, Aussie classics - such as their Johnny Cash and June Carter-esqe rendition of the Skyhooks classic You Just Like Me Cos I’m Good In Bed featuring Red Symons on lap steel and Fanny Lumsden on vocals, a yodelled up version of the Farnsy classic You’re the Voice or a tub-thumping version of Addicted to Bass featuring Josh Abrahams playing the bottles. Yes, the bottles. “We’ve often looked overseas for inspiration with songs like Gold Digger, Single Ladies and Milkshake, but we realised that there is a bunch of classic tunes over the past 30 years right here in our own back-
yard, so we thought we’d have a crack at them,” frontman T-Bone Pig told TE. “We’re stoked that people like Fanny, Red and Josh came on board but rest assured, there were a few who said no,’ he laughed. “I remember Josh saying he was keen and he’d bring his guitar along and stuff - he was pretty surprised when we said we wanted him playing the bottles. If you’ve seen the Pigs in action, you’d know full well that they have more than their fair share of fun onstage - producing a rollicking bluegrass-fused vibe that is pretty hard to be cynical. T-Bone said that the band wanted to recreate the live vibe as much as possible on the new record. “We did the album completely live,” he said. “We holed up in a little cottage in the Southern Highlands and just got in a room together and belted it all out. “We just wanted the record to sound like people playing in a room together - it might not be note perfect, but I think we’ve done a pretty good job of capturing the fun and the energy of a Pigs live show.” Catch the Pigs at Lizotte’s Lambton on Friday, March 13.

Rock and roll rules for English STEPHEN BISSET
W
hile he has worn many hats throughout his long and eclectic career, Jon English has no hesitation when it comes to picking a favourite creative outlet. “Rock and roll and live performance is definitely still my favourite thing to do - it’s completely its own animal,” he told TE. “While I’ve always enjoyed film and television, film and television, the feedback you get playing rock and roll is immediate and that feeling you get playing in front of a great rock and roll crowd is just unbeatable.” However, while the last few times we have seen English in our part of the world it has been as part of his “Rock Show” concept, however, this time around with his Six is Enough show complete with five piece band including Newcastle’s own Amy Vee, the whole gamut - from the early days of Jesus Christ Superstar, to his self-penned rock opera Paris, his musical Buskers and Angels as well as a few classic hits from Trilogy of Rock will be covered. “There’s certainly a lot of ground
to cover in this show, that’s for sure,” English laughed. “It does get to be a bit of a problem deciding what to leave out of a show like this, but it’s not a bad problem to have.” English, who has been treading the boards since fronting the symphonic rock outfit Sebastian Hardie in 1968, is certainly showing no signs of slowing down. “After all these years I’m still having immense fun with it so, why stop now,” he said. “I’m heading back over to Sweden this year for a few shows and there are some exciting new projects in the pipeline so, watch this space.” Catch Jon English at Charlestown Bowling Club on Friday, March 20.

Futurists have long been saying that innovation potentially starts in Hollywood before finding itself in labs and manufacturing plants. Creative minds like Gene Roddenberry (Star Trek), Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven (Science Fiction authors) tend to have the ability to dream up technologies and new ways of doing things in their writers studios. We the public get to see these make believe technologies come to life thanks to the magic of television and the movies. This week at the movies a new but not necessarily unique story is told of a robot that is given the human ability of consciousness. We also see the potential of moving human consciousness from man to machine. Yes, these are very big steps in terms of real world impact but the story is fast-paced, very gritty and not the usual blend of high tech labs that you’d expect. Chappie is a modern blend of Short Circuit (1986) and Transcendence (Johnny Depp). Directing Chappie is a man with a very good pedigree in this genre, Neill Blomkamp. Recent titles directed by him include District 9, Elysium and Stargate SG-1. Away from the sci-fi, families can watch Cars this weekend with the continuation of the Pixar Film Festival. Fun will be available in the cinema foyer prior to the screenings.
While this romantic caper flick - buoyed by chemistry between the two leads Will Smith and Australian Margot Robbie - tends to run out of puff in the third act, there is enough going on in the previous two to make for quite a pleasant distraction. Smith stars as professional conman Nicky Spurgeon who is picked up in a bar by the charismatic Jess Barrett (Robbie) before the romantic encounter is revealed to be a scam in which Barrett plans to steal from Spurgeon. Impressed by her moxie, Spurgeon hires her as in intern. The pair develop a romantic relationship before Spurgeon cuts her off after a scam involving the Super Bowl. Three years later Barrett shows up unexpectedly in Buenos Aires where Spurgeon is working his latest highstakes scam, but she throws his plans into disarray.

hen it comes to hectic touring schedules, there are few who can currently hold a candle to Sydneybased rockers Lepers and Crooks. After a 30-date run last year, the band have gone one better, kicking off their mammoth 50-date tour in Byron Bay on New Years’ Eve in support of their debut EP Her Kiss - a tour that will take them through to the start of May and see them clock up and impressive 25,000 kilometres. “It has been pretty hectic, but the shows have been awesome and all the places we’ve hit up again from the last tour seem
to be growing, which is good,” Maitlandborn bass player Nick Burg told TE. One of the reasons for this flurry of touring activity is the fact that the band signed a management deal, last year with managerial impresario Chris Murphy - the man responsible for transforming INXS from local heroes to an international behemoth - and Burg said that his work ethic and drive was infectious. “When Chris wants to do something, he does it 100 per cent and he doesn’t stop,” he said. “But you’ve really got to come to the table and deliver - he’s not into giving you a leg up - you’ve really got to prove yourself.” While there have been some lazy comparisons to INXS bandied about
due to the Murphy connection (who, on signing the band commented “stadium bands are created from non-stop touring, phenomenal live shows and intense work ethic,”) nothing could be further from the truth. While both bands exude an effortless swagger onstage, Lepers and Crooks are much more rooted in the tradition of the big riffing rock and roll of the 1970s. With the four-track EP Her Kiss dropping in December last year, the band are wasting no time in capitalising on all the miles and are currently working on their next long player with Tea Party main man Jeff Martin behind the desks. “Working with Jeff is just awesome,” Burg said.
“He really knows a hell of a lot about production and the sounds he pulls are just amazing and it’s a great opportunity to be working with him.” With the seemingly never ending Lepers and Crooks roadshow pulling into Newcastle this weekend, Burg said he couldn’t be happier. “It’s the first time we’ve played at the Lass and it’s going to be great,” he said. “I grew up in Maitland so, because I’m living a bit of a nomadic lifestyle at the moment, its’ a great opportunity to catch up with the family and friends as well as giving Newcastle punters a taste of the new EP.
